First time visit today, reminded me of a little Italian bakery from where I grew up in Niagara Falls, NY. Grabbed some donuts, chocolate chip cookies (huge btw) and a couple eclairs. Everything is delicious. Staff were friendly. Nice to see off street parking as I was worried about that. Will be back, definitely want to try out some other items. It's a classic institution here in Syracuse for a reason. Are you going to get the fancy schmanchy fruit tarts Wegmans sells for $35 a pop? No. What you are going to get is classic Americana-tons of different flavors from different cultures, all done well. The prices are outrageous-outrageously good! I walked out the door with two large loaves of pumpernickel, half dozen half-moons, doughnuts, and the poppyseed roll (a must-have) for like $15/20! They sell 2021 quality for late '90s prices. As for the complaint over the customer service that I've read....I will admit to not always being greeted with an instant smile and a fake 'how are you today?' That being said, when you talk to those working with basic human decency, they quickly warm up and give that classic Syracusean good humor and kindness. If you talk to people serving you with kindness, you'll receive it back! A concept I think we can all do a little bit better with in this pandemic era. In any case, Harrison's is well worth the drive. The one thing they don't offer that I wish they did is maple-syrup items. Doughnuts, cakes, etc. That is a tiny little quibble that means absolutely nothing in terms of their quality. Long story short, go there. Be kind and patient. I was visiting a dear friend in Syracuse and thought to myself I'd get a cookie. After a heavy session of on depth deliberation soley on what was closest, I thought I'd visit this bakeshop for a cookie. When I walked in the man behind the counter greeted me warmly. I asked for a chocolate chip and he responded with, "do you want a small or a large?"... What kind of question is that?! After looking at this heavily chipped cookie, I had an idea of what I was in for, a plethora of flavor. The cookie was fresh, sweet and even had a hint of salt in there. Not a lot of butter and it genuinely melted in my mouth. The chocolate chips were plentiful but not too sweet, which were bonus points to me. It smelled great and with my cup of coffee, it made for an awesome breakfast. Any bakery worthy of it's title should NOT be using canned or preserved filling for it's pies. It makes a complete nonsense of the place bothering calling itself a bakery at all. I'm a pretty bad baker but at least I prepare my own filling. Can't say much for their bread either. Pretty sad when you can get better and more authentic Italian bread from a flea pit like Price Chopper. Or is it once again the old story I hear, over and over and over again, ad nauseam, from locals claiming to be Italian just because their surname ends with a vowel. The nearest most of them have come to Authentic Italy is North Syracuse.....and that's pretty much all American too. It's pathetic. No wonder the Italian food here sucks so badly. On the way home from visiting my wife at St Joe's hospital, (6pm) decided to swing by Brooklyn Pickle for a sandwich. Passed by Harrison Bakery and changed my mind, thinking of fresh rolls and then picking up deli meat. Told the girl at the counter wanted six fresh rolls, then turned my head to pick out a half moon for desert. Imagine my surprise when I got home, looked at the bag, and it had a tag, DAY OLD! Harrison Bakery is a long established and highly popular bakery on the West side of Syracuse. It appears to be generally well regarded for its products. Based upon my initial experience, there is a vast divergence between the service the employees provide and the products they serve. Usually, I will visit a business more than one time before posting a review, however, there are times where clearly present characteristics are notable enough to warrant a review after an initial visit.. I will describe three elements: atmosphere, customer service, and product experience. Atmosphere: after parking, enter this bakery through two automated sliding doors. If customers are waiting ahead of you, they tend to converge immediately at the entry door, unwilling to enter the store. Do they fear the bakery Nazi? ( Seinfeld reference...get it) Finally after waiting in line in an unnatural silent mode, I could approach the counter when called. I felt this was a very weird experience. Usually, customers take a number and peruse the offerings that the bakery offers. Oddly, everybody congregated by the entry door while they awaited their calling to the counter) Once called for service, I found slow, bitchy ( sorry for the language) customer service. The products: pumpernickel bread was excellent, although lacked some sweetness but still was excellent; pastries, prune and cheese, were merely average lacking expected flakiness and bland in flavor. Very nice having a bakery here in the heart of Syracuse but the thought is short lived. My first impression was this place is amazing with some fantastic pricing and a wide variety as will see from pricing. Everything is incredibly cheap compared to other bakeries that I have been to. They have everything ranging from cookies to donuts to stuffed donuts, to bear claws to cheesecakes. For those who love half moons, you'll find that here. Pricing wise, a donut is $0.79... I'm sorry but that is ridiculously for home baked goods. $2.50 for a shortcake?! That's too cheap to pass up. Then things went downhill. Customer service was spotchy. There were 2 people, one male and one female. The male was very polite, informative and helpful while the female (no offense to those feminists out there, but no names) held an attitude that was snarky and made it moderately unpleasant. When we asked to see a donut that wasn't currently on the shelf, the staff took it out to show us. To my horror, it came out of the freezer with frozen ice crystals in the bag. I never had the chance to ask if they bake the goods daily but I didn't need to. Tried a couple of things especially since they were so cheap: Boston cream donut, cinnamon donut, half moon, poppy seed roll, and a few others that I honestly don't eat enough to remember the names of. I tried to like this place but honestly it isn't something I would come back to. The donuts do not taste fresh. Bread is moderately stale, one of the donuts was actually near frozen when I held it in my hands when it clearly didn't need to be (such the chilled temperature requirement of a cheesecake). Boston cream was okay at best, comparable to quality of Dunkin donuts at best and pales in comparison to any NYC bakery that bakes their donuts daily. Perhaps my taste buds were conditioned to high standards or my standards for breads are too high but I have no interest in spending money at bakeries that can't bake their donuts/breads fresh daily. Perhaps it was a bad time of day, but despite how cheap it is, I would pay my money's worth for quality donuts/pastries which I honestly don't think you will find here. Some other quick things to note: - Poppy seed roll needs to be baked more, mine had uncooked dough. After breaking it apart, you could see it wasn't cooked enough or the dough wasn't handled properly. - Half moons are very sweet. They really don't need to be. Taste is mediocre at best. - Cinnamon donuts are not baked daily. Either that or their recipe is atrocious and calls for stale bread. The difference a donut tastes when baked/fried in the morning vs one that has been sitting out/frozen/reheated is huge. read more

I'm pretty disappointed with Harrison Bakery. I came here twice because of all the raving reviews, but I just think the donuts and pastries here are lacking in flavor. I would much prefer Serres Donut Shop donuts over Harrison Bakery. I've eaten a jelly filled donut from each place and Serres jelly filled donut had a much tastier donut dough. The one redeeming factor of Harrison Bakery is that it's cheap, but personally even if it's cheap I don't think it's worth it. I most likely will not be returning to Harrison Bakery for any pastry/donuts. read more

My friend who is native to Syracuse insisted that Harrison Bakery is a must so we mutually decided to go today. We got 4 half moon cookies, 3 eclairs, 2 chocolate donuts, and 2 brownies for 11 dollars (um, wow). Everything was really REALLY good, and the only thing better than good desserts are good & affordable desserts. I'm from Texas and southern hospitality is a real thing where I live, so I was a little concerned about the other reviews saying the customer service wasn't good. I can't speak for other people, but I can say that the 2 ladies who were working when we were there were super nice and sociable. I have been coming here since I was little. Back then my favorites were the half moons (especially chocolate), and the fritters full if apples and cinnamon. I must say few places have them, and if you haven't had one you really must try a PB&J Doughnut! Yum does not fully describe the burst of flavors in every bite. Sharing for a friend. One of my coworkers, a health care professional. Went to HARRISON BAKERY in Syracuse Ny this am to bring treats to work. The young woman behind the counter had her mask on incorrectly with her nose uncovered. My coworker politely asked her to put her mask over her nose and explained that's the correct way to wear it. The young girl replied she had asthma and continued on with the order. My coworker left With the order then called and asked to speak to a manager. In this conversation the manager claimed that if woman working at the counter covers her nose she has chest pain. I won't even bother to delve into the aspects of either medical issue she claims to have, the fact of the matter is your serving the public and wether we like it or not wearing a mask is a state order, unless you have a letter from your physician and alternate arrangements can then be made for you in the workplace. The manager proceeded to tell my coworker if she doesn't like how the girl at the counter wears her mask she should not bother to shop at HARRISON BAKERY again. So keep this in mind if you plan to go there. They are not following guidelines and doing their part to stop the spread of covid 19. read more

I'm sorry Harrison Bakery! I'm not a frequent online reviewer, but I do believe in sharing information when I find an establishment to be either exceptional or totally disappointing. Unfortunately, I dont possess the time to post frequently or post for every place I visit. While posting a review of a recent dining experience I had, I noticed I left a poor review for this bakery way back in 2011. I want to repost and say I've been visiting this bakery again, regularly. Everything is back to the way I remember it once was, fresh and delicious. They often introduce new items and I'm never disappointed. Their staff is superb. They are always friendly and often greet me with a hello, even when they're busy helping other customers. If you're in the area, you won't be disappointed visiting this landmark bakery. How can I have not written a review yet for this place. I found this place when I was in SYR for a car show and man was it worth it. Now each time I come to SYR, I go out of my way to come here. When I have visited here, there was always a steady stream of people. The last time I came here, there was a line that formed behind me. I come here for the Half moon cookies, brownies, almond danishes are so good too! I also love their cannoli's and try to get that also when I come here. Oh and their prices are very very cheap! I usually love this place, but I my husband ordered a pie for my birthday and offered to pay for it over the phone, but was told I could pay when I pick up. They told me to come before 6pm, I showed up at 5:30pm (which is before 6pm!) and they told me my pie was sold. I understand they were closing soon, and maybe didn't think I was coming, but it was really disappointing as a customer experience. If I would've known that there was a chance they'd sell my pie that I ordered, I would've come earlier, but they didn't even give me a heads up. Also, didn't help that I'm pregnant and having major cravings! Still love their pies, but it felt like bad customer service today. They should just start telling people to come before 5:30pm, otherwise there's a chance your order will be sold to another customer. Went there as a child 40 years ago. Moved away for 25yrs and my first Sunday I'm back I went for donuts. Goodness never thought it would be exactly as great as I remembered. They even still give free cookies to the kids. Harrison is a landmark here and I'm so glad they're still making incredible breads and treats. Their half moon cookies are the best ever and their jelly donuts would make a bulldog break a chain. This little bakery on the Westside of Syracuse is pretty dece. It's nice not to have to drive all the way to Wegman's and suffer through the lines and crowds just to buy a loaf of Italian bread. And their French baguettes are pretty awesome considering we're not in France and they're only 2 bucks. Every time I go I make sure to leave with a French loaf, if they got 'em. (If they're out, the rye bread is an excellent alternative. And they can slice any loaf for you too!) I've never had a pastry there I liked though. The raspberry streudel was dry and too starchy for my tastes. Also tasteless. And the blueberry vanilla coconut cake, although it sounded exotic and delicious, was disappointingly bland. I think I had an almond croissant there once, but since I'm not sure, I'm guessing it wasn't too memorable. The donuts and danishes seem to be pretty good. 3 out of 3 tries yielded delicious results. This place has been around for decades and little has changed. Our family has been buying marble rye here from generations, and it is delicious! One change, however, is that you now have to call ahead to order marble rye. They do have an abundant supply of separate loaves of pumpernickel and rye on hand for walk-ins. Over the last few times we've been here, we have experimented with the sweets. The "half moons" a/k/a black and white cookies, are pretty tasty and more cake than cookie like. The cannoli and eclairs are good but not the best I've ever had. Harrison's is a time-honored Syracuse institution and on my list to hit up whenever I'm in town. read more

I reaaaaaaaaally wanted to like this place because I prefer to support small bakeries. We just found that the baked goods weren't fresh or flavorful. They looked nice (my husband tossed the box before I could take any pix). We had 2 cream puffs: looked fantastic but the cream was more like a non-dairy whip and the puffs were not the eggy pastry you'd want; cinnamon dusted donut: this is the only one my husband ate all of and I didn't get to taste it; cheesecake: I love cheesecake and this one was just kinda meh. The tart, sweet cheesy that makes cheesecake work was missing; eclair: I couldn't really make out any particular flavors, not custard, not the chocolate; red velvet cupcake: the cake was not moist enough and it was super dense; glazed yeast donut: I actually liked this one but it wasn't special enough to go back for. If you are looking for Starbuck's Pastries or Dunkin Donuts - skip this place. But if you want great donuts or terrific pies - this is a great place with friendly helpful staff. Their breads are very good -- they supply many of the local deli's - their pumpernickel (dark rye) is great. I would like the crusts a little crisper but that is minor thing. Their onion rye is exceptional. Marble rye is great when you can get it. I have been here about a dozen times (just moved into the area 16 months ago), I can say I have never had Nick H's experience. I have taken their baked good to various group meetings at the university - and everyone loves the stuff I bring. I haven't tried the cheesecakes - I am real fussy about those - or a lot of cookies.
