It's a Polish Bakery - so get the Polish stuff. Babka roll is delicious, their plum and apple coffee cakes are amazing, the prune roll is good, but absolutely NOTHING beats the poppy seed roll. I grew up on HB goodies and bread. Some things have changed over the years, though. The pumpernickel bread seems to taste saltier than it used to. The quality just seemed a few notches better back then than what it currently is. Possibly new management and a change in recipes or quality ingredients? We went here on a Sunday because, honestly, the other places we wanted to go to were closed. My husband and myself both got cannoli. The filling I thought was quite good, but that was overshadowed by how soggy the shell was. My husband also got a donut, which he said was okay, I got a giant chocolate chi cookie, which was good. One of the workers also brought my 7 month old a teeny little ice cream cone. I wasn't thrilled, as she didn't ask, and hasn't had dairy yet, but I was able to avoid having him eat it without being rude, so no harm done. During our annual Thanksgiving trip back home to Syracuse from Bethesda, MD, my wife and I stopped in for her favorite cookie in the entire world, the Harrison's Half Moon. She came home excited to bite in to the pillow soft cookie, but instead experienced almost a crunch. What, this couldn't be. Harrison's half moons do not crunch! Thinking maybe the cookies were stale, we brought them back and were given a fresh batch. Once again her mouth watering as she poised herself to bite into her cookie. Once again the dreaded crunch. Something has changed. The cookies this past week were overcooked or something. Please please please look into what might be wrong. We hate to see our Thanksgiving traditions change. Been a few times... take your lawyer because you are gonna get robbed! Got a french bread that had 1 foot that was about 1 inch diameter. The girl put it in the bottom of the bag to hide the fact that it was a piece of crap. On another visit I got donuts.... watch out! They have ones in the front of the case but they deal them to you out of the back of the case. I got 6 out of 12 of them that were more like donut holes than donuts. I could not serve them to guests, the kids would have gone to war over who got the loser donuts! Fact: the bakers put this product out. Fact: on 2 different visits they counter help doled the crap out of the back of the case where you couldn't see. 3. There is no way the owner doesn't train these people to do this since more than 1 person is doing it. Simply put, they are not worth the trip. Di Lauros has a much better product and they don't screw you when you are not looking. I wonder if the owner hires dealers fired from the casino to sell the cookies... 1 from the top and losers from the bottom of the stack! I will never go back. Go to Wegmans for a better, fresher, lower cost product with less travel time (Harrison is a special stop after all). Even if they have a product that you like the taste of (and some reviewers would question that too) they will give you a crap one just to rip you off. That is my opinion anyways. I have tried them multiple times too so they have earned the loss of business. They have other issues but I think the top 2 are reason enough to write the review. If you stop: taste test everything before buying and inspect each item purchased. read more

The cannolis at Harrison's are perfect. For some reason every time I go anywhere for a cannoli the shells are just too hard. But at Harrison's, they are not too hard and not too soft. Their half moon cookies are definitely the best. I have had many half moons in my life but they always taste too much like cake. When I took a bite I thought to myself "oh my god, it's actually a cookie." It wasn't too crunchy or too soft. When I took my first bite I instantly stopped and asked my mom if my grandmother used to get these because it was an instant flashback and I remembered! When any food can make you do that, it wins in my book. I was very unimpressed with their donuts though, the dough was dark and chewy and there wasn't much flavor in them either. Dont eat the fruit bar. It is made from hundreds of all different kinds of 2 or 3 day old doughnuts that are left over all mixed together with about a 15 lbs of sugar. This is a very average bakery with average goods. The staff is not very pleasant. The people that are return customers obviously have not had the opportunity to enjoy real baked goods made with real ingredients. Believe me, I know how this stuff is made. Altho' we live in Texas now....one of our first stops whenever we come up to visit family and friends, is to Harrison Bakery. The Half Moons, Cream Puffs, Prune Danish, Babka, Rye Breads, Rolls, Cakes, .......can I say EVERYTHING????? is top notch!!! I really try to cater to local business is why I went to Harrison ..I asked if they could add Happy Birthday with a name to 3 cookies?? First they said yes. Than a no because whoever is in the back was busy making dough.?? I had $20.00 in my hand ready to spend..My last effort was I asked for maybe little something on a cupcake? I always intend on only purchasing a loaf of Italian and French bread.... somehow when I leave I also have a dozen donuts, cookies and other treats.. I've been eating Harrison's products since 1972. I've eaten bakery goods in 49 states and a dozen countries around the world, and Harrison's remains one of my very favorite bakeries. I've never had anything from there (and I've had most everything at one time or another) that I didn't find to be delicious. My personal favorite remains the brownies (the only "bought" brownie that I ever liked). But I also love the cakes, danish, donuts, breads, and rings. I never was a fan of moon pies, but that has nothing to do with Harrisons. Come to think of it, I guess I thought their regular pies were unremarkable, but there are so many other things that I love, it doesn't matter. Obviously everyone's palate is different, and all one has to do is to read the many reviews here to confirm that fact, but seeing all that was written, I had to throw in my two cents worth, too. I called to place an order for a cake. The woman taking the order was very rude and had no customer service skills. I asked for a certain size of a cake & she said I can't order that size ( even though I've order a small cake before!) ok fine.. Then I asked for a marble cake, she said its not available,,,, um a bakery doesn't allow you to order a marble cake? What? Next I informed her I had a coupon. She kept asking who gave me the coupon which I replied the sales person whom I ordered a cake last time did. She kept wanting to know from a magazine or somewhere else,,,,, again I repeated myself.... I wasn't getting anywhere with this woman so I told her I didn't want the cake anymore. Hopefully the bakery can get better staff, the cakes have always been good, donuts have always been dry. It's a shame her terrible customer service skills prevented a sale. read more

The cookie is a chocolate cookie with a fluffy white frosting with shredded coconut spingled on top. The cookie is just like a half moon (base). The whole cookie was soft and moist and delicious to the last bite. I hope my description is helpful. We had a baby gender reveal party yesterday for our third child (and as it happens, our first girl!) and we could not have been happier with how Harrison Bakery handled the cake. Since we brought a sealed envelope directly from the doctor's office to the baker, even my husband and I didn't have any idea what our baby would be. It was very important to us that the cake was decorated without any outside indication of the color of the filling inside. They did a fabulous job with this, going so far as to put both colors along the outside in case the color from the filling leached out in any way (which it didn't). The cake was beautiful, and they followed the design instructions perfectly; it was even better than we imagined. Not to mention the taste- it was exactly as delicious and moist as we would expect something from Harrison to be. Great job guys! read more

I have wonderful memories of buying baked goods at Harrison Bakery after mass on Sundays, the best frosting in the world on fresh half moon cookies and cakes, free chocolate chip cookies for us when we were kids waiting for our parents to get their order, and delicious pumpkin cake in the Fall. No more--the six half moons I bought when passing through town yesterday were stale and dry--even the frosting was bad. They don't make pumpkin cake any more. They freeze, thaw and sell baked goods that aren't as good as what you can buy at a grocery store. I was so disappointed! read more

I stumbled upon this unassuming corner bakery in the "Polish Neighborhood" of Syracuse by accident. The front of the building was less than inviting with its large hazy window. The inside was equally unimpressive and sort of droll. I was greeted by staff, but they quickly revealed themselves as less than professional, alluding to profanity. That point aside, they were able to help me navigate the tremendous selection of baked goods. The volume of inventory was the most notable feature here. The presentation of the food was average, as if the high quantity of goods needed to be stuffed into the display cases, but the prices were well below expectation. The quality of the food was nostalgic. It was like eating cookies prepared by a grandmother at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Good or bad depending on your take of that comment. Overall, it's a quick cheap bakery stop that, if you happen upon, is worth the few minutes to grab a snack. Certainly not worth seeking out on its own. 3 Star is really for price and reminiscent feeling for me; could easily be 2 star. read more

I went to Harrison Bakery for the first time today, and let me tell you, it lived up to its amazing reputation. The girl at the counter was so cheerful and helpful! She helped me choose which pastry I might like and was very personable when putting the rest of my order together. And I was shocked that my total order was under $5! This place has amazing baked goods for so cheap. I also got a French baguette and oh my goodness I'm literally just eating it plain it is so amazing. I ordered a cake for a special occasion for the first time from Harrison in May. I ordered a marble cake with strawberries, custard and butter cream frosting. They were going to charge me up to $50 more to draw a shirt and stethoscope on it, so I said don't bother, and I had made the name tag that I wanted on the cake. All they had to do was draw 2 simple things. The extra "decorating fee" would have been on top of $58.00 for a half sheet cake. The cake was terrible, the frosting was not butter cream as I ordered, it was a thick nasty and way to sugary and the cake itself was just awful. The cake was a complete disappointment and I won't be ordering from them again. This was for such a special occasion and it was so discouraging to have the cake turn out so bad! read more

Lived here 41 years and never tried it before, now I know why! Half moon cookies were stale, hard on the edges. The raisin bread had a huge air pocket all the way through the bread so only had about half a loaf and it was plain tasting. Will not go back! Something at Harrison Bakery has changed! I had a not so great experience towards the end of 2013, actually several back to back experiences where they were constantly out of products. Simple products too, croissants, poppyseed rolls (which I love), and their delicious macaroons had all seemed to become almost seasonal. I decided 2014 was a new year and took one last chance. I stopped in and their shelves were full of every yummy treat I wanted! The croissants are now huge, a size that I hadn't seen in years there, and poppyseed rolls was not only on the shelves, but better then I had ever remembered! They just poorer out of their golden sides and everyone at work loved me for bringing them in. The quality of Harrison Bakery baked goods, rye bread and sweets has gone significantly downhill over the past few months, they are selling stale baked goods and they are awful. I went about a month ago and got 6 half moons, once the best in town, they were stale and tasted like they had been in a freezer or walk-in cooler for days. The rye bread was fresh but loaded with way too may carraway seeds. Yesterday 2/26 I went and got bread that I was told was fresh, got it home and it was not fresh. I bought a dozen hard rolls that were old and I got a halfmoon and a cheese bun that were gross, old, dry and were thrown out. Pay attention Harrison, what you are trying to sell is not even acceptable. I cannot come back until I have heard things have changed and I am a lifetime customer, I predict if you continue like this your doors will be closed within the year. I'm Pei Lin H's friend from NYC. I came to visit and we went to Saves Diner in Cazenovia, we had breakfast and they had this amazing pumpernickel-rye swirled bread. It was toasted with butter, and thicker cut. When you bit into it, it was crunchy on the outside and soft inside with just the right density. So delicious! I found out it was from Harrison's and you had to special order it. The next time I came up to Syracuse I special ordered 15 loaves of it and gave it to some to my friends in NYC. They loved it! I was riding in the car with some of them just a few days after and they were all saying how much they enjoyed it. I told them I had bought 15 loaves and then they were trying to figure out who I gave it away to; they were trying to guess how many loaves I still had as they wanted to raid my house and split between them what I had left! The poppy seed bread is great too, I have split a few loaves with my coworkers and they really like it. I have had many of their breads and baked goods and found them to be very good.
