During COVID-19: Unsafe. Unclean. On Friday, April 17, I counted 17 people without masks. Several of the staff had their masks under their noses or chins. There were other signs of mismanagement from a glass plane missing in the refrigeration section to a parking lot barrier (bumper blocks) askew and sticking into a parking space. I don't blame the staff - but something is clearly not ok. People's disregard for the Mayor's order is disheartening but in other grocery stores, the staff is able to ask people to leave. When I interned in DC nine years ago, the average Harris Teeter was like a godsend: clean, curated, well-designed, lively, yet still priced for...well...a DC intern. Did the chain take a nosedive when Kroger bought it out? Or, as seems to be the case, is this a particularly mediocre one? What happened to my Teets? At a superficial level, the place still looks good. Harris Teeter always does. But at this location, nothing on the produce shelves lines up with the labels. While most of us can distinguish carrots from alfalfa sprouts, this poses a problem with endive, arugula, dandelion greens, chard, etc. They routinely run out of the little spindle produce bags and twist ties. This may be a DC labor law situation, but after a certain hour at night, they essentially have no cashiers on staff. So you're forced through the sluggish, inefficient self-scan aisles, where the UPC readers never seem to work as well as they do for cashiers. Management seems to let staff at this location go belt-less, which means lots of pants sagging down to the thighs. Some of these blokes are friendly enough, but let's face it: they're basically mooning their customers. And yes, the produce is often not just sub-par, but sometimes downright unusable. My favorite anecdote: sitting squarely in a pile of lemons was one that was over 50% blue. Yes, a BLUE LEMON. Covered in mold. I recognize some fruits, like raspberries, mold when you look the other direction, but not lemons. How long did it sit there? And even better, while I was marveling at the blue lemon, a Teeter Trawler came by, replaced some produce, stacked new ones, but DID NOT GET RID OF THE BLUE LEMON, then walked away. Yup, this place ain't a winner. The nearest Giant on H Street may have none of the bling, but it's a better-run store. Besides this HT location, the only other supermarket where I've routinely had to open an egg carton to confirm that none are cracked is good ol' Walmart. That should say it all. read more

Relative to other Harris Teeters, this one is very mediocre. I'm not even talking about it's relatively small size; that's to be expected when you're in the city, and they do have very convenient parking underground. My issues with this Teeter is that it is poorly run. If you go on a Sunday, like yesterday, there are almost no staff members outside of the deli/meat counters and the cash registers. Good luck if you have a question about finding something because there isn't anyone to answer it. It's also a bit of an obstacle course; there are abandoned carts, stocking carts, and stacks of crate blocking aisles, unattended. The produce section is also remarkably tiny. This store gets by due to a lack of competition in the area. If it's true that Whole Foods is eventually coming to the Navy Yard, this Teeter better step up its game sooner, rather than later. read more

This is frustrating. I live across the street and shop here multiple times per week. Quality is really starting to slip. It's usually not a sign of good management when empty shelves become a regular occurrence. I've had to get rain checks on 3 of my last 4 trips because what I needed wasn't on the shelf. A week before that I went to return some recalled Sabra hummus. The person working customer service asked me three separate times how I knew about the recall because she'd never heard of it. The Sabra recall had been all over the news for a week and some other customers even backed me up, but really, why was I being grilled about it at all? This store got off to a great start, but I'm pretty sure the manager who opened the store (Tim) has been gone for a while now, and it shows. read more

This is just fine. Always a long wait especially for self checkouts. It does what you need it do to in a pinch, but when Amazon Fresh exists, why venture out? Also the hot bar is very very mediocre. Everything looks good but tastes not good when you get it home. I also had to get a last minute order of cannolis one time for my girlfriend and a project they were doing and was rudely told to call ahead next time, it seemed like they were not happy to be there. This Harris Teeter is fantastic. We've been going to them for years for our regular shopping and have always found fresh options and a well-organized, well-stocked store. Recently, we reached out to the HT at the Yards for help with boxes for an upcoming move. We'd been jerked around by another store close by that asked us to arrive at 7 AM on a Saturday and then 5 AM on the next Sunday and both times we got there we were told there were no boxes for us. When we drove to the HT in the Yards, they did not disappoint. They'd very graciously saved us five boxes full of boxes! We are incredibly grateful to the night staff, managers, and Sunday AM customer service reps who helped out and made this happen. We are really lucky to have such a great team of folks at our local store - they're not just a grocery store in the community, they're part of our community. read more

Waiting 15 minutes for an attendant and EA's told our order was still being shopped, would be another 30 minutes and would get a call when it reads ready. An hour later, no call I go back to pick it up, wait another 15 minutes for an attendant. Finally hey my groceries, grey home and realize they only got half out groceries, and were missing the items we need for dinner. Ended up ordering takeout. I have never liked this store for many reasons. They usually are under staffed, the produce is just okay, and their selection is lacking sometimes. My 2-star rating applies only to the Asian buffet. There are definitely better ways to spend your lunch money -and less of it. This food is very underwhelming. It lives up to the expectation of grocery store food (they excel at mediocrity). I would never have known the orange beef was orange beef. Think of big balls of deep fried bread covered in colored sauce that tastes like...a big ball of deep fried bread. No flavor added. The meal in the photo including the drink was $20.73. Gripes: - checkout system is unnecessarily confusing. They're trying to be like Costco without changing the layout of their checkout stands so its easy to think you're in line when you're actually one over. - Produce is packed in. Cat Call warning. Love this store, hate the aggressive pan handlers that stand immediately in front of the doors. The food selection is good, the store is clean, and the sandwich counter is the best lunch deal in the Yards. The only down side is the permissive environment that encourages in your face aggressive pan handlers that now stand immediately in front of the doors. They are especially aggressive with women, and routinely comment, cat call, and yell after them on the sidewalk. I don't know what can be done about the pan handlers. Perhaps the crappiest store I've been to. Pshhawww...AS IF! It's a brand spankin new store so the places is so clean you could literally overturn the salad bar and hot bars and eat right off the floors. Though, with the amount of foot traffic it's been getting the last couple of days, I can't imagine it staying immaculate like that for too long. During lunch time, it's drove after drove of hungry people mobbing the hot bar, like flies on honey. I'm sure the madness will die down immediately after the 50% off promotion on Hot Food Bar items ends after opening week. If you are lucky enough to get your food, you'll be fooled into thinking it's smooth sailing after that, UNTIL you get to the express checkout lines and that odd familiar feeling sinks in...yeah that's the one...the I-95 rush-hour parking lot. Meanwhile, the rows of regular checkout line remain unoccupied, much like the 495 Express Lanes regularly does. I Absolutely LOVE this HT! Where do I start? The produce section boasts an awesome selection of organic fruits and veggies! This store also has a very nice selection of cooked food on their hot bar, salad bar, and cold food to purchase based on weight. I absolutely LOVE their kale salad and albacore tuna!!!! Whew! There is a large seafood that will appeal to any seafood that is just too lazy to drive to the wharf. Their selection of wine and champagne is extensive and it seems they have more than enough to choose from. Overall, this store is worth driving out of your way to have a nice selection of higher quality foods. Also to note....all employees I encountered were very professional, friendly, and ready to help! It's a nice, clean, well-stocked grocery store with plenty of parking. I usually find what I'm looking for and some oddities I might not otherwise purchase like organic canned pumpkins. I love the store's layout and casual feel. Editing to add a compliment about floral section. I was headed to a graveside service, and I decided that I wanted to bring flowers. With the assistance of Monica, I picked flowers and a nice basket. She arranged & packed them so beautifully in that little basket that anyone seeing the floral arrangement would think I had purchased it from a high end floral shop at a much higher cost. I wish I had taken a photo. They always have a large selection of very lovely flowers and plants. And if you want coffee, there's a Starbucks inside. read more

Let's start as you enter the store. The produce department seems poorly run with frequent empty shelves or produce just short of the garbage. The deli department has been taken over by Boarshead products which are more expensive than some of the other brands they used to carry. The meat department is OK. Seafood?--forget it. I would NEVER buy the crap they put in that department. Grocery aisles are pretty good, but I can tell that they have stopped carrying some items they had when they first opened to opt away from some specialty items and add cheaper, more pedestrian items. And the biggest gripe I have is the dairy section. Way too many empty shelves. Can't keep half and half in stock, milk products sold out; but if you want chemical/plant milks you have 100 varieties. Service and most staff in the store in general are good, but if you are an employee with a really bad attitude they put you in charge of customer service at the office. The office staff are often rude, behave like they are doing you a favor, and are often unhelpful. read more

Honestly this grocery store is just "blah" no super great not super bad just somewhere in between but falls a little below the average bar at times. I live in navy yard and have lived here for quite sometime since moving from south Florida where I frequent a grocery store by the name of "publix" which to me nothing can come close. I love publix and no matter what harris Teeter does they just can't compare. I feel like they hire high school drop out who are always engaging in conversation with each other and never greet the customer at the seafood or meat butcher. Sometimes getting someone to help you is like pulling teeth. I am a VIC member and things that are supposed to be discounted never ring up correctly when I'm at the register so I constantly have to watch the screen when items are being rung up to make sure I'm not paying higher prices. Then if I let the cashier know a certain item is on sale and not ringing up correctly you would have thought I asked them to sign over their first born. I will say that this store is a lot better than giant but it's no Whole Foods or wegmans. Overall it gets the job done. read more

I have to credit my husband for getting the idea for us to try this Harris Teeter neighborhood food & pharmacy place grocery story near the Navy Yard metro stop in Washington D.C. yesterday. The customer service was pleasant and there was a variety of food items both from what we ate for our lunch and what my husband purchased for us. Some of the foods that my husband got for us are the Gingerbread instant oatmeal, some apple cinnamon boursin cheese, some basil & chive cheese, some sunflower bread, some French bread, some rosemary olive oil bread, some Mandarin oranges. For foods from the Harris Teeter lunch bar that they had, I had some of the chicken wings, macaroni and cheese some type of sushi and some type of dumpling and my husband had some pansit. read more

I will say, I've always had a pleasant experience with the pharmacy staff. However, the people who ring you up always look as if the last place they want to be is there, and they are vocal about it. I always chalk it up to them maybe being underpaid and tired from standing there. However, today I couldn't really let the experience I had slide. For one, they don't have enough cashier lanes open for evening rush hour. I get in line with a small basket of things. The young lady bags my things in so sloppy that she has double bagged and threw my things in between the layers of the double bags. the loops to carry the bags are inside the bags. She slams my eggs down first, as I go to pay, the credit green button isn't working. She tells me, oh you have to pay debit. I say, in the years I've come here I've never used debit unless it's cashback. She looks at me with a blank stare like "i don't really care". So I use the pin nd pay. She never moves my bags down to the area to pick them up, instead she starts ringing the woman up behind me and throwing her items towards my bags and I struggle to reach over the wall to get my bags. She never stops in fact she just looks at my hands trying to grab the bags. Not once does she stop to help. I finally grabbed my bags and she rolls her eyes at me looks at the lady behind me and starts to giggle. I put up with the terrible customer service here because it's on my way home and again their pharmacy is great. I wish this staff would get it together with their service. Not to mention their produce section is always full of rotting fruit, fruit flies and they take their sweet time to restock. There are barely ever any staff members on the floor. read more

I shop here weekly and they always have exactly what I am looking for. It is a tight fit for the neighborhood, so when it is busy the aisles can get a bit crowded and it takes a while to check out. They have an in house Starbucks cafe with a great salad, olive, hot, and Asian food bar. They also have sushi and fresh fish available too. The few times I've had to ask to find an item, they have been very friendly. The cashiers upon check out have been very friendly as well. read more

Don't shop at this store! I went there yesterday and bought chicken salad and "fresh" salsa for the Superbowl. When I took the paper off the chicken salad it was dark yellow because the mayonnaise had spoiled. The salsa is so bad that it's fermented! In addition, staff is not friendly. I really like this Hairy Tits location. I was quite surprised to see how clean and well organized it was put together. The best part of them all was the different food buffets they had from Far East to a simple salad bar with all the fixin's. They offer fresh sushi with an assortment of different offerings from your basic maki rolls along with their take on specialty rolls. The people who work here also seem to genuinely enjoy their jobs. All in all, with a clean work place and a happy work environment would make me feel welcomed and more than willing to do my shopping here again. They do have a garage that offers an hour and a half of free parking just as a FYI. read more

It's a new, Navy Yard Teeter, approximately 1/2 mile from the other Capitol Hill Teeter. Has everything including extensive prepared foods and a full Starbucks inside. The layout of the store is a little strange but it works. The lunch crowd is huge but otherwise it's usually not that busy, even on Sunday's. read more

For SW/Near SE residents, this is hands down the best grocery store in the area. The store is beautiful, with wide aisles, high ceilings, and lots of staff who actually say hello and are willing to help you find what you need. The produce is fresh, the meat and seafood case is well-stocked, and overall the selection of products is quite wide and varied. Free parking underground. There's even a Starbucks. Prices are average; this is neither the cheapest or most expensive grocer, but you get what you pay for, and the private label products are all high quality. However...skip the cannolis in the bakery department :). read more
