I had a pre-order for catering for an event, the order verified it was done around 3 but when I got there around 5:30 everything was done except one tray! They did a great job getting that last tray together under the time crunch we were in. I've lived in the neighborhood for about 2 years now and before jumping to the reviews, I really tried to wait for this store to get better. This HT has got to be the worst grocery store I've visited. The customer service is awful from nearly every single associate I've interacted with. Even the ones I don't interact with are just unapproachable and unprofessional. One time I was followed around the store by a male staff member as he tried to hit on me, even after I tried to politely end the interaction. The staff is not only rude to customers, but they're rude to each other. During my most recent trip, I asked for help opening the locked ice fridge. I was passed around by 4 different employees, 2 of which had access to the keys, before one actually offered to open it up. Once open, they revealed awkward slates of ice where some bags were even open. Another time, they completely forgot to put together a pre-ordered tray of food in which I had to wait at the store for about 45 minutes until it was ready. I'm not usually one to come on here with a poor review, but at this point I just want to warn people that this store cannot be relied on and the shopping experience, no matter how small, will be probably be awful. Serious customer service and team training are needed here :( read more

I live in Takoma Park, which is a great little town just across the DC North West border. Unfortunately, it is a food desert and grocery store options are somewhat limited. I drive 5 miles down North Capital Street to Harris Teeter in the NOMA part of DC, every week. I absolutely LOVE this grocery store chain and this branch in particular. I find the employees at this branch to be friendly and willing to assist you in finding whatever you need. This Harris Teeter is my main go-to for all of my fresh produce and meats. They have reasonably priced organic and locally grown fruits and veggies. The meat department has a great selection of wild caught seafood, grass-fed beef, and free-range chicken. I actually find the meat department to be better than Whole Foods at times. The prices definitely are cheaper. This branch also has a great selection of beer and wine. Go ahead and try Harris Teeter. I'm sure you won't regret it. Tip: Plenty of FREE parking is available in the underground parking garage. read more

Not coming back here - rude staff and long lines The layout was confusing. I could not find the vegetarian protein options like veggie burgers. When I asked an employee politely for help, they made fun of me! Literally they said "Veggie burgers? You don't eat meat?? I'm sorry to hear that." I couldn't believe it. As with most Harris Teeters, this one has samples throughout the store--cantaloupe wedges, cookies, olive tapenade with fresh bread, and other samples. The store is clean, well-stocked, and has a great selection of beers but not ginger beer--the staff member working the beer aisle, however, did not know what "ginger beer" was (and thus whether they had any). Free parking available, but unfortunately the store closes at midnight. There are two parking garage entrances--one on M Street and the other on N Street. Construction is still ongoing, so lots of one-ways and pedestrians, including bar-hopping scantily-clad ones heading to Club Ibiza. read more

My work place is around 2 blocks from here, so I'm rating this on their lunch food selection, which is basically awesome. They have several buffets, fresh made pizza, fresh cut fruit, and my favorite, which is a sandwich bar with a special sandwich-of-the-day for $3.49. It's only half a sub, but it should be more than enough to fill you up since they pack it with a lot of meat....way more than Subway or Potbellys. Also, many of their meat is from Boar's Head, which many of the local cafes also serve, but for twice the price. I've pretty much had every sandwich there and all of them are really good. I'm downgrading it a little because the service can be hit-and-miss, but overall I've had pretty good service there and everyone is generally friendly and helpful. If you're in the area for lunch and want some cheap, but really good food, this is a great option. read more

While it is a little pricey, this is a fantastic grocery store. They've got four different hot bars, all of which had some interesting options - from fried sushi to mac and cheese. In the "fresh" section, they've also got a huge cheese bar - but they could definitely cut up their brie a little more often. I was ready to buy, but nothing was available except for the gigantic wheels. While we encountered really long lines around 7pm on a Sunday night, things have been much easier around 4:30 in the afternoon during the week. Staff have been generally friendly and efficient. I've never tried to run in this Harris Teeter while waiting for the bus to be thoroughly disappointed by the out-of-order Self-Checkout and the lack of cilantro (Jenkins Row). This one isn't 24 hours like the Pentagon City store but it does do.* My visits are always quick ones, as one of many during the lunch rush. Yes, I hit up the Harris Teeter hot bar. One of the last times I visited they even had General Tso's Tofu--de lujo. I also would like to point out that I've observed the people in charge of the Asian Bar take pride in the presentation of grocery store Mandarin Chicken and the like. Big up! I also like the kombucha selection. I think they have quite a few flavors to offer and they usually have VIC sales. The other thing that I think that this Harris Teeter does well is the "express" registers by the hot-bar. There are the main registers, Self-Checkout and these express registers which aren't always staffed but they are very helpful when they are. Of the three Harris Teeters which I visit, I must say that this one is my second favorite. Four Stars but I don't do too much here so that's that. read more

This is a good grocery store. It has its strong and weak points, but ultimately it serves the needs of those that live in the area. I would say the weakest point is that the produce is sometimes not very good (especially the avocados). Also, I've asked a couple of times, but they don't have peanut butter cookies in the refrigerators where the nestle and Pilsbury ready to bake cookies are. You have to go get the mix from the baking section. The store stays pretty clean. I'd say the hot food bar, deli, and bakery are the strongest points. The freezer section and most of the isles stay stocked the majority of the time. Considering that the store is bustling. From open to close (and they are open until midnight) I'd say they do a great job. read more

This upscale grocery store is located in the downtown DC area. The layout and presentation was clean and inviting. One thing I really liked about this place was the nice selection of prepared food. There was many options to choose from including sushi made fresh daily. The produce displays were nicely done. I always look at a store produce section. A good produce manager can set the tone for the rest of the store. This place had a neighborhood market vibe to it. If I lived there it would definitely be my go grocery store. read more

Yep, years on, no better. I needed some staples, so I put my mask on and went into this store (probably the only person in a mask in the whole store, including staff). As noted before, there were no carts or baskets where I entered at street level, so I had to use my own bike bag to hold my groceries as I shopped. When I got to the checkout, the cashier said she wasn't allowed to touch my bag, so I had to hand her every item and then repack everything. She wasn't wearing a mask, so this was clearly not a Covid protocol that she couldn't touch my bag, but a store policy for some...reason? The only reason I went here was to buy store brand basics (relish, ketchup) that are cheaper, but it was (and was previously) such an awful experience that I'll probably just buy name brands elsewhere. It's not worth my time and stress to save a few cents. read more

This is my local Harris Teeter, so I've been here about a million times. It was actually one of the deciding factors in my neighborhood selection, as I don't have time to live somewhere that doesn't have a good grocery store! They have a great produce selection, and the guys who work at the butcher counter are very friendly. If you are gluten-free, there is a nice gluten-free frozen section in the back of the store by the cakes, in addition to a large display in the front of the store to the left of the wine aisle. Speaking of the wine aisle, it's nice that you can go here and find wines divided by both region and type of grape. For a grocery store, they actually have quite a wide selection! The hot bar is where I would have to ding this HT, as it's basically the same every day. There is generally some combination of fried chicken, barbecued chicken wings of various flavors, mac n cheese that has probably been sitting there too long, a beef dish, and some kind of potato. The foot on the hot bar never seems fresh, although every once in a while you'll catch it on a good day. If you are looking for somewhere to get a hot lunch on a regular basis, there are plenty of better options right around the corner. While I don't get much from the frozen section, they do have a nice variety of things that aren't loaded down with sodium, and I like the HT frozen margherita pizza. I've always found this HT (like most) to have a very logical layout. It's easy to get into the store and get right back out. I would avoid going on Sunday as everyone and their third cousin is here, but at least the self-checkouts work well. They sometimes have people helping to bag groceries, which usually speeds up the checkout process. read more

Small town service in NoMa. One night I was browsing for something for dinner and I found this baked chicken pie in the meat department. Took it home, cooked it, it was fantastic. Google told me that it came from a small bakery in Mass and that its pies sold online for $160. (I paid $13 I think at Harris Teeter). I went back to the store about a week later and there were 2 left. Long story short, I ended up buying both, eating them (over the course of a couple of weeks) went back and they hadn't been restocked. I talked to the lady at customer service, she said write a letter and she'd turn it into the store manager. In my head I was thinking, "This is going into the trash as soon as I walk out of the store." Wrong. I went back about a week later, 9 new pot pies had been shipped in AND they were on sale for $3 cheaper than I had been paying. I check out, the same lady is at the customer service counter. I thank her for turning in my letter and she seemed genuinely pleased that it had worked out. To just have something small like that when we all live/work in this crazy fast environment is just really nice. I'm deliberately not saying the name of the pie because that part is irrelevant - it was the service that was outstanding. The great pie (that currently has another 45 minutes to cook in my oven) was just a bonus. Kudos HT. You have good employees at this store. read more

Harris Teeter - you charge high prices and at 11:00 at night you don't have a single cashier. I had a cart full of groceries and had to ring them up myself. Given what you charge, not having a single cashier available is just tacky and cheap. Also, on aisle 9, put "bread" on the sign for the aisle. It's not there now, yet bread takes up a lot of the aisle and is a common item that people are looking to buy. Also, your pharmacist is rude and she refuses to input numbers off driver's licenses that will not scan. That's okay - CVS right across the street was happy to scan it in. You are lucky you have good locations - nobody would choose to shop in your store were it not for convenience. read more

Management has made it clear to me that they do not care about customer service and customer relations. I wrote a review about this location about month ago regarding my recent visit and they inbox me asking for my phone number and VIC Card number. I kindly informed them that I shouldn't have to provide my phone number and VIC Card number and if they wish to speak with me regarding my review and recent visit, that they can communicate to me via messaging. They didn't bother to reply. Harris Teeter has been known to just throw a $25 dollars credit on your account if you had an issue, but won't bother to fix the actual issue at hand. You can keep your money and take that time to fix your issue. Then today, an employee questioned the discount I'm supposed to receive. My account is labeled that I'm supposed to receive the discount. My appearance shows I'm supposed to receive the discount. Corporate has said I receive the discount. Emails from corporate says I can receive the discount. But somehow, the cashier still questioned it. I blame management yet again because their entire staff should have knowledge of the discount. read more

FREE SAMPLES! You know I love free samples, especially those strawberries they had out yesterday. This is the grocery store near my office and the NOMA stop, and it's a little pricier than others. But they have a great selection of lunch foods - an "Asian" bar, a chicken wing bar, tons of types of sushi, rotisserie chicken, etc. I got the daily 1/2 club sub for about $4 and it was definitely filling - and a great deal! Don't like it. There was a point in time when you got service with a smile here but not anymore. Prices are ridiculous and not worth the disorganization or mismanagement of the store. The employees are unprofessional unless that tall lean manager is standing nearby. I wish he was there ALL the time. That Friday $4.99 chicken bucket is a joke. Most HT's will have an area specifically for specials but here you have to go up to the deli section and personally ask for chicken, there's no signage you just have to ask someone and follow the crowd. Witnessed the cook give 3 buckets to a heavyset coworker at the end of the line and joked about giving them away to her for free... really?? With at least 5 customers standing in line?? And I don't understand the question at checkout, "did you find everything you were looking for?" When I mention what I couldn't find, they don't have it or it's in some place that doesn't make sense (for ex. no turkey wings and the variety Parmesan cheese is kept in the refrigerated section). read more

So a friend of mine invited me over for dinner and conversation. I'm always up for good company, so I head over and realize there are no groceries in the fridge. I don't have any reservations about coming into a house and opening up refrigerators, drawers and cabinets (shrug). I turned to my friend and said, "Soooooo, where's the food??" To which I receive the reply, "At the store," as if I should have known. Then I'm told, we are WALKING to Harris Teeter (20min walk). Smh. We get to HT and I realize this is a great store! The meat looks fresh, the wine selections and artisan beer looks good, and the isles are clean. At the checkout, there were several self-serve registers and around three full-serve lanes. I think the employees could have done a better job at moving the lane faster. The line began to wrap around a food isle. On our way out, we were greeted with smiles and a "Thank you for shopping with us!" Meanwhile back to my so-called "friend:" During our shop, I realized that I was given a choice of dinner items (I know this game, I wasn't born yesterday). We get back to the house and I was hit with, "Ok, the seasonings are in the cabinet, there's onions in there, and the pots and pans are here." Disrespectful. I ended up cooking honey glazed salmon, mashed potatoes and asparagus. The salmon we got tasted really fresh. And the Orchard Hard Cider we got from HT was crisp and refreshing. 4 stars for HT 0 stars for a bamboozling friend (NO NEW FRIENDS has never been my theme song). read more

When my boyfriend and I moved to DC a few years ago, we new we had to pick an apartment within walking distance of a grocery store. It just so happens this HT on 1st street in NoMa is our neighborhood store. It's not the worst grocery store in the world, but I would never give it 5 stars. A few positives about the store include they have all the same brands I grew up with, they have pretty good sales, and their VIC card is a must have. A few of the reasons why I only gave this location 3 stars are below. First, its always hit or miss on the produce. I have yet to figure out the best time to shop because sometimes I go and the produce section is completely wiped out and others its fully stocked but I haven't figured out the pattern. Second, the checkout area is confusing. Unless you shop there all the time like I do, one would be very confused on the traffic flow and no one realizes you can walk up closer to the doorway to the other registers. Everyone ends up piling into one line and congesting the entire walkway. Third, the employees are on a such a high rotation that it seems like every employee checking out customers is new which means there is a learning curve. There is nothing wrong with that. I was a cashier in high school and can sympathize with a busy store and trying to get customers out as quick as possible but also not knowing the system. However, it gets frusterating after a few years every time you try to grocery shop and the cashier is moving slow. read more

In the past, I have had a few experiences at this grocery store that did not "wow" me. I'm not here to write about those experiences. They were all completely understandable and, furthermore, I'm not a jerk. What kind of person "punishes" their grocery store when they have a not-stellar experience? Who honestly expects to be wowed when they go grocery shopping anyways? I know I don't. If it's 6pm, I expect there to be lines because that's what's happened every single time I've tried my entire life. They do a pretty good job of getting through the lines quickly and the clerks are usually pleasant to be around. That's all I expect. I recently had an experience at this Harris Teeter that made me decide to write a positive review. It went way beyond what I typically expect. I had reconstructive surgery on my hip two weeks ago today. Yesterday around 7pm, I was dying to get out of the house and so I decided to drive a few blocks to the grocery store to pick up a pizza. I could barely walk, even on crutches. My hip just isn't at the point yet where I can put any weight on it at all. When I was approaching the pizzeria inside the store, a really nice woman grabbed my eyes from across the room and held them as I limped up. She asked me if I was picking up a pizza and I told her my name. She identified that I was going to have a problem AND came up with a solution before I had even thought about it: how on earth was I going to get this pizza back to my car when I needed both arms to walk!? Ameenah knew what to do and wouldn't take no for an answer even though that meant having somebody else cover her station for a few minutes. She called me by my first name, told me it would be her pleasure and that she was happy to help. The next thing I know, shes patiently walking next to me to the customer service desk carrying my pizza asking if there's anything else I needed to pick up in the store that she could grab for me! She then helped me pay, was considerate enough to ask whether I'd rather take the elevator or stairs and walked me to my car in the garage. She opened the door of my car for me, helped me put the pizza inside and actually helped me get into the car, holding my crutches for me. First grocery store experience that I've ever had where I felt all warm and fuzzy when I was leaving. I'll be shopping at Harris Teeter a long time from now because of Ameenah. That kind of customer service goes a long way and isn't soon forgotten. Thanks, Ameenah! The pizza was fantastic! read more

Harris Teeter as a concept is great. I love that you can get prepared food, alcohol, and lots of convenience items easily. I made a salad for lunch, got some fruit for breakfast, and flowers and alcohol as a gift. Great selection for these things, and the prices are reasonable. This particular Harris Teeter, eh. We waited in line for almost 45 minutes to check out because there was one person to check people out at 6:30 PM on a weekday. Weird and unacceptable. read more

It's a Harris Teeter, so it's got the same Harris Teeter products as every other Harris Teeter. Now, those of us in NE DC can get our organic prickly melons, juniper berries, and French goat butter without subjecting ourselves to the haughty, pretentious, NW'ers or cutthroat busy-body Capitol Hill folks. This store has the checkouts set-up so that you wheel your cart to the cashier and he plucks the items out of it. Sorry, perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I like putting my groceries on the belt myself. I also like to bag my own groceries. Control freak? Maybe. There is ample parking underground, with access from M St or N St. They have a cart escalator, but apparently they need to post a notice that the smaller double basket carts don't work on it, as a lady tried to use it for her tiny cart, which resulted in it's plummeting down the ramp and crashing into another cart at the bottom. Hilarious! Also hilarious: they've strategically placed ping-pong balls in the beer aisle. Anyway, I'd like to welcome Mr. Teeter to the 'hood. I'll never need to leave NE DC again! read more

The focus at this 'Teet is prepared food. You are smacked in the face with it as you walk in the door. Salad bar. Deli sandwiches. Sushi chef. Hot soup. Prepared food! Prepared food! Prepared food! This store's entry set up is so focused on prepared food that I almost got caught in this infinite loop of prepared food and almost forgot to do my real shopping! Finally, I made it past the free samples of cut-up fruit. It's flu season so I didn't want to chance it eventhough they give you sani hands wipes at the door. The aisles at this 'Teet are laid out in such a mysterious format that Store Maps are posted at the end of each aisle. I needed one. I was turned around and confused in this store. It took me a long time to finish my shopping because I couldn't find anything. The prices were very high. Not a lot seemed to be on sale. I am an e-vic member and even that didn't seem to help the situation too much. Oh well. It is not too far from my house so I shouldn't complain. Overall, it was not a bad experience. I parked for free. Got my groceries. Got some free samples. And got out in under two hours. I'll go again. read more

Another beautiful new grocery store! Thanks to my new yelper friend Steffany H for alerting me to the presence of another fab grocery store in the District. My partner and I first experienced HT back in the early 2000s when we were living in SW DC and we sometimes felt like driving to a big grocery store rather than walking to the SW Safeway (which is now new and improved) with our granny cart. Back then we'd drive out to Ballston to hit the HT on Glebe Road, the thougth of which seem so laughable today, especially as there are so many large new grocery stores in DC. This Harris Teeter, which opened in early December 2010, seems like it's nearly a full city block just ike the Safeways in Georgetown and Mount Vernon. Walking around the salad bar stations, the pizza counter, the sushi bar, and the deli area you'd have no idea that you're in the middle of the city. I felt like I was out in a suburban grocery store. But developers have learned that when they provide underground parking, the area of the store can be just as sprawling as out in the burbs. I don't live anywhere near this store and went out of my way to stop in since I was in the vicinity picking up a package at the Fedex distribution center. I don't anticipate returning any time soon,and personally, I remain a devotee of my Yes Organic Market but I'm just so happy whenever I see such effective urban developement. Residents near Gallaudet must be giddy that they can hop off their rather new Metro station and head to such a fantastic grocery store on their way home! read more

The selection at this store is terrible. Unlike other harris teeter branches, they have no plain greek yogurt and no unsweetened coffee. They seem to be limited on many items. The prices here (as well as most other harrtis teeters) are exorbitant and the harris teeter card deals don't compare with other grocery store specials. Safeway carries the same selection of groceries for much less. The store is well organized and some of the staff is very friendly but for the most part the service is on par with anywhere else... except for trader joes, Noone beats them. There is parking, but it's difficult to get in and out of Unless you're familiar with its location, it can be hard to find. The lot has two enterances, but only one is indicated. Unless this store is convenient for you, there's no reason to go out of your way to visit this location. read more

This is a good Harris Teeter. In a city where apparently grocery stores are the place to hang out (e.g. Whole Foods, Trader Joes, or 5th and L Safeway), this is a place where you can finally do your shopping in PEACE! A block from the metro, a starbucks nearby. The produce is fresh, the people who work there are kind, and the deli is surprisingly good. Great sandwich deals, and the sushi is not bad! This one is way nicer than its Potomac counterpart. Right off the NY/Florida/Galludet metro, it's a prime location. Inside the aisles are wider and even the checkout lanes are roomier. Tonight for the grand opening they served wine, champagne, chocolate dipped strawberries, Thai chicken, ice cream, spicy curry, and there were a plethora of other freebies. They also passed out their (free) reusable grocery bags. There's underground parking, and a nice food court on the west side right past the checkout lanes (not hidden like the Potomac one). Staff seems friendly and overly eager to help, which I like for a grocery store. Their hours are 7am-12am everyday. This is my new grocery store... screw you Safeway. read more

What a delightful shopping experience I had at this Harris Teeter. You are greeted by a lush spread of pre-made food. They have standard rotisserie chickens, olives, and sushi plates, but they also have a large salad bar, ribs, hot pizza, a hot food bar, and a large soup selection. The salad bar has some unique items on it like "fresh" crab and several unidentifiable vegetables (or maybe not vegetables, who knows). You can also find samples of fresh fruit and warm bread here on a good day. The selection of cold drinks is fairly small. There are basically two choices for water, a few reject flavor Gatorades, and an array of juice options for those brave souls who enjoy a good juice cleanse. The wine and beer selection makes up for the small selection of non-alcoholic beverages. There are three coolers of white wines and several six pack varieties of lesser known beers. High five Harris Teeter. Make sure you use your VIC card to get all the best deals. It seems like those items on sale often sell out as you will see whole blank sections in the shelves. Also if you have a little kiddo with you, Harris Teeter loves giving out balloons. It was a pleasant shopping experience all around. read more

NEGATIVE 100 STARS I tried to give this HOLE a second chance, but even the regular cashiers are a disappointment. Telling them you want to ring it up as credit is a MASSIVE HEADACHE. I said, "credit," multiple times, but the ignorant hag still rang it up as DEBIT. Then, instead of owning the mistake like an adult, she gets an attitude. I realize the educational requirements to work here are low, but at the very least, DO NOT PUT YOUR STUPIDITY AND LACK OF MATURITY ON DISPLAY. But checkout always takes forever: the cashiers don't seem well-trained and they can't tell the difference between different types of vegetables. It's great to have such a large and well stocked supermarket in such close proximity. I love that it is open late. I love that it has parking for cars and bikes. If there is ever a problem, the customer service has been helpful and courteous. It's reasonably priced for a center city supermarket. This place has almost everything we need. It is missing good quality sustainably raised meats. It has a couple deli items and eggs, however, I would like more. Also, rubber covered bike parking rings would be great too. This place has everything!!! It's also considerably better than Giant. I would rather walk a few blocks to Harris Teeter than go to the Giant that is literally right across from my apartment. Harris Teeter is more upscale, better stocked, fresher, and just an overall nicer version of Giant/Safeway! I especially love the $4 bucket of fried chicken they have on Fridays!
