All their locations that I know of in the DC area are open 24/7. Their prices tend to be on the higher side but they have a pretty wide selection. Their produce feels fresher than Safeway or Giant's in my opinion. My top pick for quality in organic and non-organic (read: pesticides) still goes to Whole Foods and Trader Joes. I did most of my shopping at night due to the hours I worked and was free to explore all the aisles at highway speeds without colliding into another pedestrian. They also make good subs and have daily deals on them for certain subs. On one of the days you get off all their subs. Make sure you get their VIC card for savings (it's free). It also keeps track of your subs so you can get a free one. Occasionally, I receive $5 off $25+ and that'll definitely help out. read more

While this location is still expensive and doesn't have very high quality products, I stop in here quite often due to the fact that it's only a short walk from the Pentagon City Metro station (I always avoid driving because the parking lot is like a nightmare shopping mall around Christmas time where people have to follow you thinking you're walking to a parking spot in their attempt to find a place to park). However, recently the freshness of the produce seems to be worse than usual. One week the cherry tomatoes that were all out were already expired and starting to shrivel and/or grow mold. The other day when I was trying to buy some strawberries was even worse. After standing there for awhile trying to find a container that didn't have any rotten or fuzzy strawberries, I was almost ready to purchase some when I saw a Harris Teeter employee picking up all the loose rotten strawberries that had fallen out of the containers onto the display and put them in containers for customers to buy, gross! Not only did this mean that customers weren't buying accurately weighed containers, these were strawberries that clearly should have been thrown away rather than sold to customers. Needless to say, I left without purchasing any strawberries after seeing that rather than throwing out rotten strawberries, they were put back in packages to sell to customers, no wonder why I couldn't find any packages without rotten and fuzzy strawberries! read more

Today I learned that Harris Teeters Pentagon City has instituted a ZERO TOLERANCE for parking enforcement. STAY FAR AWAY from this store or risk having a fake cop put a ticket on your car and a collection agency contact you and blackmail you into paying them $15. You might be guilty or not - it doesn't matter - they will ding you and lie about it later. I have used this store since it opened in 2001 despite some basic problems - mostly for convenience but I will NEVER shop there again. The staff allows its customers to be set up by colonial parking. In my case, I stopped by at 11:30 am to grab a few items and apparently hit a meter that someone else had used so it have five minutes or so on it - when I hit it, unknown to me, it didn't clear - I shopped for 20 minutes and spent about $70 in the store. As I was driving away, I noted the parking violation on my car. The collection agency claims that the county will enforce this ticket. The whole thing is shady - I knew that I was permitted to have an hour of shopping, the lot was almost empty, and apparently they have these guys hiding out looking for potential suckers who improperly or incorrectly hit the meter button. The when you complain to the store, they claim zero responsibility. Moreover - it is important to note that the meter says right on it that you have one free hour - IT DOES NOT SAY THAT YOU MUST REGISTER the time. They just lost a loyal customer who will NEVER shop there again. I don't care if I have to go five miles out of my way - there are plenty of stores that have decent parking and don't play gotcha games with consumers. And I will do everything that I can to make sure that other consumers are not robbed by these creeps. read more

I dig this Harris Teeter. The first time I ever shopped here was about a year and a half ago and I've been pretty much hooked since then. This location is open 24 hours a day and has free parking - sound too good to be true? Well..it isn't :-) They have a reasonably hefty organic selection and even a few vegetarian items. I purchased the vegetarian, stuffed portobello mushrooms with soy based "bacon bits" on my last visit and they were very, VERY good! I enjoy making smoothies and have found some grocery stores to have a shortage of variety when it comes to their selection of frozen fruit; however, this location offers a variety of frozen fruits, which made me really happy. Each time I've visited, the meats/seafood, fruit and veggies looked pretty fresh. If you're looking for wine, you're sure to find something you like here as they have a good bit of choices. You also get a free wine bag that holds up to 6 bottles of wine...but only if you fill it up! The lines here are generally short...I don't recall ever having to wait very long. I suppose I've had pretty good timing. There are several stores and restaurants nearby, to include the Fashion Center at Pentagon City (fashion mall). You'll find that some of the items are a bit pricier than your average grocery store, so keep that in mind. Also, if you're parked too far away from their lot...don't expect to be able to roll their grocery cart to your vehicle. The wheels automatically lock after you reach a certain distance. The one thing I do hate about this location is that annoying sound they play that supposedly scares/keeps birds away. Though they're probably scaring away more people than birds! Hidden jewel! Yes, I just revealed the secret. This grocery store is nestled by Pentagon Row. It is clean and within walking distance of buses and the Yellow and Blue Metro lines. They have a wide array of items, but not too many as to confuse you. The staff is generally helpful. Looking for specific items like cold brew iced tea or Peet's coffee K cups? First time at a Harris Teeter after seeing tons of commercials since moving to the DC area. After walking around for a couple hours at Fashion Centre, my firends and I came in to get some food for a BBQ and watch the World Series. The store was clean and spacious and price looked ok. I only wish that there was a Harris Teeter in downtown Bethesda so I wouldn't have to go to Safeway or walked the extra distance to Giant and Trader Joe's. read more

A major pro is that it's open 24/7, but during the off off-peak hours they only have the self-check out lanes open. That would be fine if you have a basket of groceries, but if you have a cart-full and brought your own bags it's horrible. You can't take scanned items off of the bagging area without confusing the machine. So you're forced to scan all your items and then precociously stack them until you can bag all of it until the end. They should really have at least ONE manned register open. Is it really that difficult? During the off off-peak hours, I have seen at least three people just standing around watching me. I asked one of the workers if he could open a register and he said no. Why? Isn't that why you're there? As for their food selection, I expected more variety. Some weeks I can't even find basil or decent grapes. For a store that wishes to compete with Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, it really is lacking. With that said, I don't know how they can mark up their products by so much. It is really over-rated. Due to this store's location, parking really is a hassle. It shares a small-ish lot with a Bed, Bath and Beyond and at least another dozen restaurants and shops. I've never tried the underground parking garage, but I think I might have to if I want to continue shopping there. read more

I have been a regular customer at this store for two years and I hate it so, so much. It's like flames on the side of my face. It is poorly-stocked, poorly-run, inexorably slow, the staff is slow when they're not being rude, rude when they're not being slow, and sometimes as a bonus, they're both! I hate how they constantly seem to stop stocking altogether things that I buy regularly, how they're always out of stock of half the other things I need, and their pharmacy is insultingly awful. I have waited on line for over 45 minutes before as a single pharmacist struggled to churn through 3 customers. 10 out of the last 12 times I have been in to pick up (non-prescription, but behind-the-counter) medication, they have been out of stock. I have had conversations about this with multiple pharmacy staff, but it happened again today, and it's the last straw. I hate this place. I refuse to give their pharmacy ANY more business, and can't wait to get out of the neighborhood just to get away from this godforsaken store. read more

I shop at Harris Teeter because its close and convenient. It's great that this grocery stores near me. However, they make it easy to shop there. Always find a good place to park there too. This Harris Teeters is my favorites from all. Manager is friendly. The check out staff is very nice, helpful and always makes your shopping experience delightful. It's a huge store with great selection of fresh produce.The prices are a bit steep though. I find it more than the average grocery stores. The wine selection is my favorite. It's well-stocked, very conveniently-located (right next to Pentagon Row and Pentagon City Mall), and has tons of fresh food. I especially like their sushi and sandwich bar (Harris Teeter probably has the best grocery store sushi I've ever had). The store is clean and I feel like they've improved with the quality of their produce (I visited back in September and was appalled by the freshness of the produce, but I realized that they've improved A LOT recently). This is the only supermarket I go to as it's just one stop away on the Metro or a short taxi ride. I love the grocery selection, the salad bar, and the check-out clerks. But today I was very disappointed when I arrived early and was ready to check out by 7:00 am. They directed me to self-serve. Usually someone will help you in the self-serve aisle if you don't want to do it. However, the clerk was quite unfriendly and checked me out very begrudgingly. When I didn't see where the receipt came out, she took it and handed it to me as she laughed rather derisively. It's not often that I'm disappointed with Harris Teeter. I enjoy shopping at Harris Teeter. I love their quality and their location since it's close to my work and they don't have one in Fairfax, but today I had an awful experience with a manager named Adam. As I was shopping, I noticed that he kept staring at me. For a moment I thought he was going to ask me if I needed help and then realized that he was totally checking me out head to toe and I felt like a piece of meat. As we made eye contact, he turned and looked the other way. Later on in the store, I saw him again and he had that look in his eye like a pervert. Coming from the most annoying state ever to purchase any type of alcohol, I have to automatically give any store in which you can walk in and buy wine, beer, and food an extra star! They have a large selection of wine and beer at this location. It's also attached to a bed, bath, and beyond which is an added bonus. Like other Harris Teeters, they have a deli counter featuring Boars Head meats, a separate bakery area (I highly recommend the key lime pies), and an ample amount of produce. They also gave samples set up throughout the store. On this visit the samples included blueberry cobbler (surprisingly tasty), cantaloupe, deli turkey, American white cheese, and apples (which did look highly unappetizing since they were turning brown). Prices are relatively inexpensive- I'd recommend signing up for a VIC card for extra savings though. The organic blueberries I purchased were very juicy and refreshing mixed in my yogurt this morning. It's an ideal location- right across from several apartment complexes but there is a parking garage if needed. read more

This is my favorite grocery store, the one I judge all other grocery stores by. It's big and roomy on the inside and they always have fresh produce and meat. Plenty of parking despite its location in densely populated Pentagon City. The surface lot gets crazy, but there's always room if you come down to the underground. Unlike many Arlington Harris Teeters (I'm looking at you, Crystal City and Shirlington) this is NOT a small footprint store, this is the real deal. read more

This is the first Teeter I've been in. Having been in other high end grocery stores like Whole Foods and Wegman's, I expected to see similar products. It is much nicer than Giant or Safeway, but this particular chain did not meet my expectations of a high end place. Don't get me wrong, this is a pretty nice place. Teeter is my neighborhood supermarket. It's walking distance from my apt. Which makes it very convenient. It's a huge store with great fresh produce. The only downside is the prices. They are steeper than the average grocery store (NOT Wholefoods steep). Therefore when I want to make a huge run for groceries I usually drive to supermarkets that are close and have better prices. However, when I need vegetables or a few things Teeter is a great option. Their wine selection is good for a supermarket. My other fav thing is that they are open 24/7 which makes it very convenient when it's 2am and Im craving frozen pizza and Ben n Jerry's chocolate fudge froyo! read more

I have a love/ hate relationship with this place. In particular, I hate this location. Basically you've got a lot and a validated garage. It never fails that I can't find a spot in the lot when I need to buy one thing, and end up following like 5 cars around for the same spot. Eventually I give up and go down to the garage, which seems like a nuisance since I only need a gallon of milk.....I digress. The problem is that the Teeter has all the stuff I need for cooking. Sometimes I'll have a recipe and think, there's no way this will be in the store. But they always have it, and its like this big magical surprise. While I want to hate on the whole access issue, and the fact that it's only slightly cheaper than Whole Paycheck, I'm a big fan of the selection and nice environment. To avoid the crowds I go to the Shirlington location on the way home from work and that solves most of my problems (except for that pesky "I need one thing, why can't I park here" issue). Simple- this store located at Pentagon Row is outdated, many items overpriced and for this location it is downright sinful. I went to the HT at Potomac - and WOW what a difference, from layout of the store, ambience, available ready to go food, flower dept, produce dept and dairy area, unbelievable that it is the same chain. The positive points: the staff are wonderful at HT Pentagon Row, open 24 hours and convenient- however Whole Foods just opened up 2 blocks away!! The best analysis of Harris Teeter as an overall brand is that it doesn't have Whole Food high quality (and high prices to match) but it has a better selection and nicer layout than any other major supermarket. The reason I shop at this particular Harris Teeter is that the staff is actually friendly and helpful. I have grown accustom to being treated rudely by sales staffs, be it at a mass retailer, a mall or a supermarket. In fact, I almost consider myself lucky at most stores if the employees don't act like they are going you a favor when I ask a question. This Harris Teeter is different. The cashiers and other staff are friendly, they even smile every once in awhile when you talk to them! (Imagine that). The non-sale items here may be a tad pricier (so if I had a large grocery order I may decide to go someplace else), but overall the few extra pennies are worth the service. This Harris Teeter location is clean and has a decent selection of items, prices aren't great but they're not terrible. Bonus points for having quite a few items out to sample and for having the sample stations stocked (I hate when I walk up to a sample station with an empty container of dip and crumbs of crackers - restock it or clear it out!). I don't think I can fairly subtract points for having ridiculously thin grocery sacks because it appears to be a race to the bottom for grocery stores on that one, but I definitely will take off for not double-bagging my wine and for overfilling the bags. Usually I bring my own bags when grocery shopping because plastic sacks are flimsy and unreliable, but sometimes I want to pick something up when I'm already out and don't have my bags on me. Before I even got off the Metro, my wine bottle had completely poked through its sack and was in danger of falling out, and a sack with some items that had edges & corners (Dannon yogurt containers, boxed items) had edges poking so far out that I feared it would break and my things would go everywhere. Those 2 bags probably would not have made it home had I not put them inside of a larger shopping bag I was carrying from somewhere else. Overall: very pleasant grocery, with some nice things and prices that aren't too horrible, but better bagging policies would make me visit more frequently. read more

Maybe I'm used to Harris Teeter in North Carolina or to Wegmans... where the staff are pleasant and helpful. I have never seen such a dour and unpleasant crew than at this Harris Teeter. This evening I dropped by because of the special price they have on the larger family packs of chicken. They were out, but had smaller packs of the same chicken but not as cheap. When I asked the apparent supervisor (woman with wedge hair cut) if there were more family packs or if I could get multiple smaller packs at the family pack price, the curt and unpleasant growl back just made me want to leave. No "I'm sorry sir" or attempt to help the customer like at Wegmans. The prices and selection really aren't that great at this HT. And with such bad service (really all the staff looked and acted miserable this Sunday evening), I won't be back. read more

I go here most days of the week only because they are right across the street from my apartment so it's really convenient. But if there were other options in walking distance I would not go to this Harris Teeter. Once I bought egg beaters, got home and was about to pour them into a recipe when I noticed the expiration date was for two months prior!!! I went back to the store and they refunded my money and told me to grab another, free of charge. I went back there and every last one of them was expired, and not just by a day or two, but by weeks, even months. I had a similar experience with bread that was on sale, I went to grab a loaf, noticed it was expired and grabbed another, which was also expired. I went through every one of them and they all were. I called over an employee and asked if they had any non expired ones. He found me 15 minutes later to say they didn't have any but a truck was coming the next day. How can they have so many expired items on the shelves? It's disgusting and bound to make people sick! Bottom line; I shop here because of it's convenient location and hours (open 24 hours) but make sure you check the expiration data on everything because their employees do not. read more

I love Harris Teeter but usually shop at the one on Duke St or in Shirlington. Every HT I have shopped at ignores the stupid "Do Not Double" disclaimer on manufacturer coupons. I just discovered today that this location actually abides by the disclaimer and will not double certain coupons. Obviously if you don't use coupons, this won't matter to you but even the person in line behind me had never heard of this practice at a HT. read more
