I hired Harris & Sons in February to remove a sussoo tree from my backyard. Before the work began, I explained that my landscaping company wanted the entire tree, including the stump, removed. Harris & Sons told me the stump did not need to be removed and assured me that poisoning it would kill both the stump and the roots. Trusting their professional expertise, I followed their recommendation. When my landscaping project began, my landscapers immediately told me they could not properly install artificial turf over the stump because as it rotted, the ground would settle and create uneven spots in the new lawn. They also discovered the stump was still alive and that roots had already begun spreading into another area of my yard. I called Harris & Sons, and they returned on June 27 to retreat the stump and roots. They told me to wait one week before continuing with landscaping. When my landscapers resumed work on July 3rd they determined the stump still had to be removed before they could complete the project correctly. I had no choice but to pay an additional $675 to have the stump removed so the project could move forward. When I contacted Harris & Sons about reimbursing me for the additional expense, they refused. Instead of acknowledging my concerns or trying to find a reasonable solution, they sent me a Google article claiming stump removal is not always necessary. That completely missed the point. From the very beginning, I told them my landscaping company wanted the stump removed. They advised me otherwise, and I trusted their professional recommendation. In the end, the stump still had to be removed, and I was left paying two companies for the same job. As a widow and single mom, I rely on professionals to give honest, informed advice. I trusted their recommendation, and it ended up costing me more money. What disappointed me most was not just the extra expense but the complete lack of accountability. Rather than listening to a legitimate customer concern and trying to make things right, they dismissed my experience and refused to take any responsibility. Unfortunately, based on my experience, I cannot recommend Harris & Sons. If a customer clearly tells them what is needed, I would expect them to either perform the requested work or clearly explain why they will not, rather than assuring the customer it is unnecessary only to have them pay someone else to do it later. read more

Wanted to get a bid to remove a pine tree. Received a quote for 4 people to remove a tree, which would take them less than 8 hours. Or that would be $125/person per hour. If they get done early they simply pocket even more profits. That seems illogical to me. If it's $500/hr then simply quote me that versus not to exceed fixed bid of $4000. Great service all around! We asked them to cut down an old pine tree that was making huge messes in the pool and back yard. No problem! After an hour or so it was removed! Stump was ground and everything! Now 7 years later they can back to remove a pan the that was in the way of pool plumbing. I know it sucks to cut down trees but it was the only option. Called Harris & Sons to have a very large mesquite tree removed when we moved in about 3 years ago. Don was the estimator and I believe the office employee which was just as wonderful was Moriah. Paid cash and the job went great from start to finish. Called Harris & Sons to have a very large pine tree thinned and trimmed along with a citrus tree removal (with stump grind). Again dealt with Don and Moriah and thought the job went well. Paid cash on this trip as well. Called Harris & Sons and had an estimator come out for a second citrus removal as well as to point out that on their last trip out, they failed to remove a large branch out of the pine tree. It's now dead and leaning on some live/large branches which is holding it up. You don't have to be a 'certified arborist' to see the nice cut from a chain saw on one side and splintered on the other where wind twisted it some and made the issue visible. The new 'certified arborist' and estimator this time was Gonzalo. He was in my back yard for about 10 minutes before I asked him to leave as he confirmed that Harris & Sons would not take accountability for leaving the large/dead branch in the tree. He started by repeatedly saying 'it might have been cut by a saw' and then quickly changed that to 'I'm 100% positive that it was not cut by a saw'. I asked him to acknowledge that he started by saying 'maybe' then 'no'. So at the very least, I did not have a confident, skilled estimator sent to my home this time. Gonzalo stated he would tell his boss to see what they thought. He didn't even take a picture of the tree. Then said 'maybe you should call a different arborist'. I went from 5 stars down to two. I'd give one star for this last experience alone but it went well the first few times. I can't help but notice that many good reviews are years old and some of the newer ones are not favorable. Almost removed two trees from neighbor but they blocked my entire driveway with their truck and trailer without even a courtesy knock. They used a chainsaw to cut a palm tree 6 feet from my car splattering it with wood pulp and dirt. Tried to call, only an answering service - Nobody called back to address the mess their crew made in my driveway and my cars. RING cameras caught it all so they can't say it didn't happen... After calling 8 companies for estimates, Harris & Sons was by far the lowest. I didn't want to go with just the least expensive either, so I did my research first. I only called companies with excellent BBB ratings which would also ensure that they were licensed and insured too! I wanted estimates on the removal and stump grinding of a 60+ ft pine tree, 50 inches in diameter whose roots had cracked the corner of our perimeter wall. It was also leaning over our neighbor's house. You wouldn't believe the difference in pricing!! I actually got an estimate for twice the amount that Harris & Sons offered. What I liked about them was that they didn't start off with a high price and then try to negotiate it down to get my business, they were low from the start! I spoke to Jerry, who was very pleasant over the phone. A few months later, (my research took some time) I called them to schedule the service. I didn't even need to be there. Yeah.. it made me little nervous, but these guys are professionals. They came out October 18th, 2013 in the morning while I was at work. NOT ONLY did they do an EXCELLENT job removing our tree, but they even cleaned up the area and took branches lying around that my husband had cut off another tree. I'm so HAPPY with their service. You came out to our property over three to four months ago (April-May) Jeremey walked the property and was supposed to give us an estimate/quote, even provide a layout of the property to help them with trees that needed to be removed and trimmed. We have been waiting since that time, I have made over 5 plus phone calls and left many voicemails only to speak with an answering service on a recorder line, while asking them to have someone to call me to finds out where my estimate was in regards to the service we requested. These guys did some earlier work for me that was okay. This time around the experience was terrible. A sales guy came out and walked my yard with me. I showed him the trees I needed pruned or removed. He made notes to his tablet and at the end showed me a price. I said "okay" and asked to schedule the work. He said someone else would call me on that. The work was done fine. However they said that I owed them more money because I showed them one less tree. That simply isn't true and I have security cameras showing me and the salesperson going from tree to tree as I explained things. That proves that I showed them all the trees that needed work. Then they said I also owed them for tree stump removal which I had requested but they claimed I never did so. Why remove a tree in the middle of a yard and not remove the stump??? Further, these "extras" had to be paid for in cash and I couldn't get a receipt! I had to pay for the rest of the work by check. Scam alert. Maybe the sales guy made a mistake and maybe he is a con artist looking to rip you off. Or the workers are claiming you owe them more money when you don't and they pocket the extra money each day and the owners don't know any better. I contacted the office and never heard back. They cut down a dying 40ft. pine tree in my front yard, job took about 7 or 8 hrs with TOTAL clean up. They did a great job, very carefully protecting my near by roof. The crew were pleasant and efficient. You now can't tell what was there except for a large brown spot in the lawn. I received 9 different quotes and they matched the lowest quote! We moved to Phoenix from New York. Because the trees and pricing may be different out here we went online to ask for tree removal/trimming quotes. Four places called us to set up quote appointments. Harris was not the first place to call us, but was the first company to actually drive by and quote us (within one day). When Jerry called with his quote I was very clear about the fact that we wanted other quotes, and the guy was understanding and very nice. I said that another company was already scheduled out a few days later and that he'd have to wait to hear back from us. Again--he totally understood and was appreciative of my communication of that. Jerry called back the next day to tell me that they had two other jobs scheduled near my house the following day, and would I consider having them come out and do the job? Jerry came down more on the quote, and it was too good to turn down. We asked how long it would take to remove one giant, overgrown and double twisted palo verde tree, grind out the stump and also to trim back the mesquite tree, which probably had never been professionally trimmed + all debris removal. (It was a big job). Jerry said that it would take two hours, and said that his guys would be there at 11am, if that was okay with me. He said that he didn't want to be pushy, but he wanted the job and knew we'd all save money. (we did). I called my husband to confer and he agreed we should go ahead and do it, because at that time, one of the other companies had already driven by and given us a written a quote that was $100 higher than Jerry's. It was a no-brainer so I called Jerry right back and we scheduled for the next morning. Jerry's guys showed up two minutes early (yay!) and the job was finished in ONE hour, on the dot. Unbelievable. You'd never have known that the palo verde tree had been there. The mesquite tree looked amazing, and the yard was spotless - no debris. I could hardly believe it. We LOVE it! Payment was so casual--I simply called Jerry to tell him the job was done, and I gave him my payment over the phone. It was that simple. Jerry answered some questions we had about drip/irrigation tubing, and then he also recommended Whittier Tree Farm over on Southern in case we wanted to replace the tree we had removed. He told us that we'd get a discount there for mentioning his name. We will call back next year to have them do all of our trees. GREAT EXPERIENCE. read more

Disappointed with their follow through. Contacted these guys about having work done. They came out quickly to give a quote, prices were average and we then gave the go ahead on a Friday. I had to question them with any sort of time frame of when they would be coming out. The response I received was "Sometime next week, Tuesday or Wednesday, I'll call you before were coming out." Still a vague appointment, but manageable. Wednesday afternoon rolled around and I hadn't received a phone call. Called the guy I previously spoke with and wanted to touch base on when they would be coming out. He responded with "Uhhh I'm on a motorcycle right now I'll have to call you next week." I questioned the next week and was very confused, it was only Wednesday and he basically responded with some "we got pushed behind" generic response. I expressed I was very disappointed considering we needed this work done before the following Monday, and now they obviously wouldn't be making that deadline. Waiting a week just to get another possible phone call is very unprofessional business. They were hardly apologetic, didn't even offer to confirm an appointment for next week, it was just another "ill call you". After I explained we were on a deadline he finally apologized and I declined having them call next week to then set an appointment. Anyway, whether it be the case or not with them getting behind, I'm very disappointed with the lack of communication. Please call your clients and update their status. I shouldn't have to call and retrieve updates, and sit here wondering when this company is going to come do my yard. Horrible follow through, and I'll be finding another company that can do the work they commit to, when they say they will. Freeing up your schedule and willing to spend a lot of money for a company that stiffs you is ridiculous. read more

These guys seemed very nice, and they came out and gave me a quote for stump grinding. I had 2 trees that I hadn't cut down yet, but was planning to upon receiving the quote for the stump grinding. I needed to make sure I could afford it. I received a very reasonable quote from Harris and Sons and went ahead and cut the trees down and called them back to schedule a time for them to grind the stumps a few days later. I spoke directly with one of the guys and he said they would check their schedule for the following week and call me back. No one called me back. I called again and this time I left a message with their answering service. No one called me back. So, I guess I need to find a new company to do the work. Unfortunately, I budgeted for the quote Harris and Sons provided and I am finding that the work is much more expensive. I wish I wouldn't have cut my trees down- I could have waited until next year, but I knew the trees were declining and since Harris and Sons provided a reasonable quote I thought I should get it taken care of now. I give Harris and Sons one star, because while I appreciate them coming out and giving me a quote in a timely manner, not returning calls or honoring the quotes- is really crappy. I am feeling pretty sad looking at my barren front yard with big tree stumps sticking out like eye sores. read more

Overall, the work performed was stellar and the price I paid is very competitive. I have upgraded my rating from 3 stars to 4 now that the work is done but I am still hot over the lack of communication. My first review outlines my experience starting with the quote on Thursday 4/24 (that I wanted to accept for the Friday availability I was offered) to Monday 4/28 when they actually removed the trees but not the stumps. The workers who removed the trees said someone else would be coming with the stump grinder but the stumps were still there when I got home from work on Monday; they were still there on Tuesday too. So I called Jeremy to see what was going on, and again I left a voicemail. Once again I was not given the courtesy of a call back. I decided to wait for someone to call me for payment so I could ask them to finish the job before I gave them my credit card info since I expected that would be the only way to get their attention. Money talks. Finally, a week after the trees were removed (10 days after they originally said the job could be done), I came home on Monday 5/5 to a yard free of stumps! I was very impressed with the care they took to protect our vehicle and how well they cleaned up after themselves. I got a call from accounts receivable (Jason?) the next morning and he said he had been notified the work was completed and he mentioned their stump grinder had broken down and they had to wait for parts. It would have been nice if someone had called me to update me on this when the grinder broke or even when I called confused as to what was going on. He asked if I'd like a bill mailed to me or if I'd like to pay over the phone. I was ready to be done with this project sooner than later so I whipped out my card and paid over the phone which was quite convenient. Don came out and gave us an estimate. He was on time and very knowledgeable. We had 3 sissoos and one shamel ash removed from our yard in preparation for a pool. They had a cancellation and asked if they could come out 3 days sooner. That worked for us. A crew of 4 guys came and cut down the trees and cleaned up the mess. Wow! Were these guys fast! Shortly after they left, another guy came and did the stump grinding. I want to say that everything was done within an hour time frame. When they pulled the big truck and the wood chipper into my backyard, a little oil leaked on our concrete pad. They were quick to clean it all up. Their prices are very competitive. And the service was topnotch. Joyce was wonderful to work with as well. We are very pleased with services and would definitely use them again. read more

We recently discovered that the VERY large carob tree in our backyard was rotten so we began getting estimates for its removal, as it was hanging over our house. 7 estimates.......prices varied more than I could fathom. Our 2nd estimate was from Jason at this company. This young man was very knowledgable and professional. He clearly knew what he was talking about far better than the other 6 people who gave estimates. We hired them at a price nobody else could touch. When the day came for the tree removal, we were blown away at how efficient his crew performed this task. It was like poetry. Tree was down, removed and cleaned up in about 2 1/2 hours. I had 2 Sissoo and an Australian Bottle Tree in my front yard that needed to be thinned out. An estimator came out the day after I contacted them and the price seemed very fair. The work was scheduled for 2 days later. I was very pleased till I went out when they were done and saw my Bottle Tree. It looks awful. I am so upset as my beautiful tree was left looking absolutely scraggly! I was actually in tears over it. I didn't say anything to the crew, they had worked hard in the heat and got the 3 trees done in a short amount of time. But I should have stayed outside and watched what they were doing and stopped it. Needless to say, its going to be hard to see this tree daily and it will take at least 2 yrs for it to come back to a decent look. BEWARE, they will sell you one thing and deliver another....THEN, they will INTERPRET in the manner that best suits them! We wanted to give them a try and give a "Smaller" company the business in these tough times. Their long time estimator, Bob, came out to the house gave us a quote and then we waited, and waited....they came up with excuse after excuse and just when we told them we were going with someone else they said they could come out.....they did and did NOT TRIM the Mesquite tree properly. I immediately communicated this to what I found out was the owner of the company and she flat out told me she "did not care what I thought, they did it as stated on the estimate"! Again, they will INTERPRET what they want to in their favor....forget the customer is always right! The issue was that they do NOT HAVE lift carts but only "Tree climbers" that cant get to the TIPS of the tree to properly trim the tree. We gave them THREE chances to correct but they did nothing and now have filed with the ROC and BBB about them as well as our community of Mountain Park Ranch and the Foothills on warning about them. Since, this one major branch has broken and is hanging on the tree, we communicated this to them and no reply.......DANGEROUS that if it falls on someone it is on them! Still nothing back from them. Disregard the canned response to my review. Clearly it is a copy/paste job 8 MONTHS AFTER THE FACT. Unbalancing the tree? We requested the entire tree be trimmed, and thinned. Not one limb. Our tree ended up looking like someone cut 1/3 of the tree off VERTICALLY. You really want to start spouting nonsense about an unbalanced tree? In the past 8 months not once has anyone reached out regarding the "offered" refund and there's still absolutely no excuse for a customer being blamed for poor service when you decline twice to send someone out to run over the work wanted. So, all my new growth will be in weak, 90 degree angles from the main branches that have been topped.
