So, I'm on my way back from the beach and I'm on 87 but taking a back road and I see several signs…read moreabout Melvin's restaurant. I saw something about a hamburger, it was lunch time and I decided to take the detour into town and see if I can get something to go. Suddenly, I was in downtown Elizabethtown, and it was quite charming. A lot of times I go through the small North Carolina towns that used to thrive at one time but are now pretty much shut down and deserted. It was not the case with Elizabethtown. I saw coffee shops and boutiques and clothing stores and of course, Melvin's. When I first walked in, I got nervous because there was a long line and I was not in the mood to be waiting a long time to get a hamburger unless it's for White Castles. But let me tell you something, Melvin's got it worked out to a science. One person takes your order. One person makes your hamburger. One person puts the hamburger in the bag and the other person takes your money. I was in and out of there in less than 2 minutes. It cracked me up. The menu is quite limited. You can have a hamburger or a cheeseburger or a hot dog and that's it. You can't even get fries. You can get a bag of chips which is what I did and some random cookie for a dollar. I enjoyed getting in the car and having my lunch for the ride back home. The hamburger was good and so was the pric... less than five bucks. I got it all the way with coleslaw and ketchup and mustard. and chili Melvin's has been around forever, and it was clear that the locals love it. The line was long and the place was pretty full. People are in and out of there in a few minutes. So anyway, if you're on your way to the beach and on 87, grab a burger at Melvin's and keep the tradition going at Melvin's.

I was surprised to see so few booths for seating. All of them were full but we were fortunate to get a table when we ordered. I got my chili dog and sweet tea and my grandson got a chocolate chip cookie. I wanted to love this place and seeing it was recommended by southern living gave me high hopes. The hot dog was warm, not hot and there was very little chili on it so I can't tell you if the chili was good or not. The chili was the only thing on the dog.... I was disappointed. The chocolate chip cookie was just average he said and he would not get again. The sweet tea was good and you can get a refill if you can get to the dispenser. It's marked unsweetened but it was sweet... No one was cleaning tables so the table was not clean. Disappointed, but it was not expensive and I can say I have had the experience.

The burger itself with mustard, slaw, chili did the trick and was pretty good. The Deets: I've had a few experiences with Melton's in Elizabethtown, the majority of which have been breakfast biscuits/sandwiches. They have been enjoyable in past visits. We decided this year when coming home from the beach and passing through E'town to grab some lunch to go at Melton's. I have to say, this visit did not hold up to past visits. When going in, it pretty much is what you would expect from a fast food type restaurant. Beyond the usual lit up menu over the ordering counter/register, there are a lot of printed paper items taped up all around as well, looking like they were possibly printed from an inkjet printer. We had a few customers in front of us that ordered then we placed our order to go, then waited. And waited. Yes, waited more. It was a long time, very much more than expected. I'm not sure what took so long, not only for us but other people that were waiting around us. Upon receiving my hamburger with mustard, slaw, chili, hold the onions, I was hungry indeed. The burger itself was pretty good. However the fries, they were not done to a crispy finish on the outside and were rather, mushy, in texture is the only word I can find...a bit disappointing. Enjoying this burger, as well as figuring good visits in the past, but disappointed by the very long wait and the fries not being crispy on the outside, I have to go 3 stars this time.

I first had Bojangles in Fredericksburg, VA, about halfway between DC & Richmond. I knew I loved them. I had in MD a few times, but in 2023, the MD all closed, but they opened a new one out in Frederick, MD. My favorite location is near Smith Mountain Lake in southwestern VA. In late August 2024, start of a long Labor Day weekend in Myrtle Beach, we were traveling through some heavy rains. We were hungry for a while but didn't see much until Elizabethtown. It was about 9 PM. I found some local place, but it was full service, and we didn't want to waste much time. A lot of stuff was closed. I was considering Arby's, which I hadn't been to one in years as I had some old coupons in the car. But they kind of ignored of us there, and nothing overly appealed to me on the menu. Although I love Bojangles, I begrudgingly went as we had Dairy Queen chicken tenders for lunch that day; so we didn't want to repeat the same food (albeit superior at Bojangles), but that's what we did. We didn't want their regular fried chicken after 9 PM; so we got chicken strips again. Customer service was relatively nice, but they were slow. Also, they said we're out of the biscuits, which was a little crazy, but they would give their blueberry dessert biscuit in lieu of being out. That was disappointing. The blueberry biscuit was good, but I would've preferred a normal biscuit. Even the blueberry biscuit was superior to the little Texas toast you get at Dairy Queen with the chicken strip basket. My chicken strips & fries also came with a drink, and I got half sweet/half unsweet tea, which is solid here too. Overall, Bojangles is great, but this location was not my favorite.

I even walked over a mile to get there... so if this burger was bad, I was going to have a very long, disappointing walk back. Thankfully, that wasn't a problem. I ordered the double cheeseburger Carolina-style with chili, slaw, mustard, and onions. A Carolina-style burger... in Carolina Beach. It just felt right. First of all, this thing was HUGE. The beef was incredibly well seasoned with those crisp, lacy edges. The chili had just enough sweetness, the mustard brought the perfect tang, and the onions added that fresh crunch. Then there's the toasted potato bun--still the undisputed champion of burger buns--and the perfectly melted cheese holding this glorious mess together. What makes this place even cooler is that it started in a gas station back in 2017. Now it's one of the most talked-about burger spots around. It's considered by many to be the third best burger in North Carolina and after one bite, I completely understand why. Sometimes the best food comes from the places you'd least expect. Despite being busy, the food came out surprisingly fast, and the staff kept things moving without missing a beat. Final score: 9.8/10. This officially takes the #1 spot on the Ev's Eats Best Burger List... for now. Every burger from here on out has a new standard to chase. #CarolinaBeach #IslandBurgersAndBites #NorthCarolinaEats #NCEats NCFood

There is a place for your dog to roam, your kids to play, and plenty of seating both covered and uncovered as well as space to eat inside the brewery. We got the Napkins burger with the brussel sprouts being the star. The brussels come with pineapple thai chili sauce, but we liked the brussels without it and opted to use the delicious sauce as a dip for our french fries. The burger was tasty, but nothing out of this world. It was cooked perfectly and I liked the Napkins famous sauce on it. The only thing was that the burger kept slipping out of the bun and it was very messy to eat as we kept putting the burger back together. The shawarma with chicken thigh was delicious. I would pair this with the brussels next time and you'd have a winning combination. The fries were good too, but the brussels are the winning side choice. Glad we stopped by on our road trip for a satisfying and filling lunch. It's worth the stop and everything tastes fresh and is well worth the price. The brewery is not Napkins, but the staff inside behind the bar was super helpful and more than happy to let my husband try the beers before making his choice.
