I don't usually drink soda, but man, that really hit the spot! Later on, she came by to refill the mug with more root beer. The burger and fries were okay. Pretty standard. Nothing spectacular. Located…read moreconveniently in the center of Canal Park, we stopped by on a sunny Wednesday early afternoon, hoping to score some of the best sandwiches in town. Even though this was well past lunch time at 2PM, the outside patio was packed and there was a line of 10 people or so to contend with to order at the register. Due to how busy it was, our food took about 20 minutes to arrive. The Squealy Dan, Porketta ($16) - Unlike most other restaurants with Iron Range Porketta, Northern Waters slices their porketta thinly instead of pulling the pork apart. It has a pleasant spiced flavor and the texture feels as if it's cured rather than roasted. It's relatively tender, and while they give a decent amount of meat, it's completely overshadowed by the heavy spicy quality of the black pepper and the acidity and vegetalness of the crunchy pepperoncini. There's a bit of melted gooey provolone on top of the porketta. While nice, there's not enough to balance out the peppers. This is all on a crusty almost baguette-like hero roll, toasty and warm. The sandwich is served with a side dip that's essentially black pepper and pepperoncini water. Definitely not needed given how overwhelming those elements are in the sandwich. (3/5) Pastrami Mommy ($19) - I haven't had bison pastrami before. Now I know why it's not very common - it's way too lean and dry compared to beef pastrami. Still, it's nicely spiced and peppery, and there's not much of the bison gamey flavor since it's cooked out from the curing. There's a little bit of mayo underneath and some mustard on top, but it's not enough moisture or fat in my opinion to counteract the leanness of the bison. While there are some slices of provolone above the meat, they are served cold. I feel like melting it with the pastrami on the griddle would do wonders to help develop some more unctuousness. It's also served on cold rye - perhaps toasting with some butter would also help. Otherwise, the sandwich is just too dry and lean for my tastes. (3/5) I feel like I ordered the wrong items. I probably should have gone with some of the seafood sandwiches, but I found it strange they only serve Atlantic salmon rather than local lake fish. In the end, I appreciate that Northern Waters Smokehaus makes most of their meats in house, but after trying their food, I feel like it's more hype than substance. Bathrooms - Larger ones located upstairs, shared with the rest of the businesses in the mini mall. Note: Northern Waters Smokehaus charges a 3% credit card fee. I had the special, a simple cheeseburger and fries. Simple it was not. This will now be my go-to place for a burger whenever I'm in town. The burger is never frozen, the fries are real and fresh cut (but they do it right and soak them in water). OMG, I was expecting a typical flat little burger and a half a dozen bites of fries...oh no, bring your appetite my friend! The burger was juicy and thick but also fully cooked. The fries were divine! They were golden brown with a perfect crisp, skin on for flavor, and not too skinny nor thick AND didn't leave me wanting more. I ALWAYS want more fries. I made the mistake of saying "no" to tomato and lettuce and onion. They are usually a little limp leaf of nearly white lettuce and a paper thin slice of lacy flavorless wet tomato. Nope, not here. I saw them preparing other baskets as I was sitting at the counter awaiting my order...the fixings were thick, bright, and crunchy! Don't skip it. I'm also super excited to try their other dinner selections like meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. I have a hunch the potatoes won't be instant. I'm curious about breakfast too, although I'm never in town that early. They have a small selection of desserts as well. They also serve my favorite root beer, 1919, along with 1919 cream soda which I didn't even know they had! Just like the quality and quantity of food, the service is what I remember it used to be. I was greeted with a genuine warm and welcome smile. I wad given an appropriate amount of time to decide before being pestered multiple times. My questions were answered without a look of annoyance and I wasn't made to feel like a bother. The small talk was personable and appropriate. Service sets the tone and I felt comfortable and belonging. The ONLY reason I didn't give it 5 stars was it kinda yucked me out nobody wore gloves at any point. Grabbing fistful of potatoes out of a bucket of water would require a type of dishwashing glove, and I get that they are fried in hot oil so that didn't bother me as much. It was more the handling the raw fixings without gloves and noting that the lettuce (as beautiful as it was), and I'm assuming the other vegetables, we're not washed prior. I don't think many restaurants do for the reason of preparation speed and ingredient longevity. That part bothers me everywhere because all I can think of is pesticides and germs. I don't typically end on a less than positive note but, I knew this one was going to be lengthy and people's attention spans short. I lied, I will say this...I left very happy and satisfied and NOT smelling of grease! In summary, GO!

I think we were the first customers inside but somehow we were order number 3 for the day! Ordering can be done either in person or on two convenient kiosks for the less social. Since this is fast food, the chicken isn't fried to order; instead, it's fried in batches, so the food is just assembled and handed out. Our order took only about 2 or 3 minutes to come out. Classic ($8) - As the name implies, this is a pretty classic fried chicken sandwich. First there's a sizable boneless thigh, battered and fried. It's a lighter crisp, more delicate than the typical breading and closer to tempura than traditional fried chicken. The dark meat still has a decent moisture level and the exterior fry tastes like the beef tallow it's fried in. There's crisp ripped iceberg lettuce leaves, some pickles, and a bunch of mayo on a slightly buttery and toasted bun. The bun still remains mostly soft to encapsulate the chicken and prevent anything from falling out. While the chicken itself isn't the most juicy, there's enough fattiness from the mayo to help things out. (4/5) Nashville Hot ($9) - This sandwich is the same format with slightly different ingredients. The fried boneless thigh is identical, but this time it's doused with hot chili oil and then topped with plenty of homemade ranch to help cool things down. The sandwich overall is slightly smoky and is only lightly spicy. I'd consider it on the very mild end of the things, giving only a slight warming of the mouth. There's so much sauce that it drips down the sandwich copiously, leaving a small puddle in the paper tray below. (4/5) I didn't find the fried chicken sandwiches here to be anything special, but neither do they really have any flaws. They're just normal enjoyable, and normal is more than good enough for a meal or two. Bathrooms - Two unisex rooms Food: [4/5] Service: [ ] Other: [ ] Final Rating: 4/5
