The food is always good quality and the ice cream is delicious! I highly recommend their onion rings. If you're looking for a good cheese pull be sure to get the mozzarella sticks. I stopped in to Happy's right before they closed. The staff were so friendly! I know what it is like to work fast food and get customers as you are trying to close. These ladies gave no indication whatsoever that I was not welcome. Just the opposite! In addition, I ate the best sloppy joe I have ever eaten in my life (sorry mom!). Best of all, they had a pup cup for my dog and were complimenting him on his patience (and on how handsome he is). This is my new favorite place to go on the way to and from the cabin. read more

Driving back from up north we stopped here on the way home. The service was friendly. The bathroom wasn't yet open to the public. The hard ice cream wasn't that good. The soft serve was better. Fries delicious! Burgers were ok. I think it was REALLY expensive for what it was. I can see the nostalgia of a place like this which I appreciate. And, it definitely wasn't worth the price to me. We were on Lake Mille Lacs with the kids, so obviously this was a perfect place to stop for kids. They have a beautiful outdoor play area as well, which was ideal for us. The food was fine. We had a fish sandwich and shrimp sandwich -- both were very similar to some thing you'd have at McDonalds. My review isn't based on the food, it is based in the experience. Any place that caters to kids, you'd think, would have restrooms that children could use. We asked the staff, who were very friendly, if my son could use the restroom. The staff commented that the manager specifically has said bathrooms are closed to patrons. I get it, things are tough with Covid esp related to safety. But, this place has an open public playground which children could use. If it were really about safety, it would be congruent for the management to close the outdoor play space (otherwise, just let kids use the bathroom). read more

OMG how can you not be happy after eating at Happy's? Their burgers are delicious and their ice cream scoops are ginormous. Also the Mac and cheese bites were so good. Well I finally stopped. I have driven by this place many times and did it again today. Then I made the U-turn. With an inside and outside play area, kids will be able to exhaust a lot of energy! They even had a basketball court. Unknown if you need your own ball? The court even had spectator benches! Ordering is a challenge and the clerk looked like she was "happy" with my difficulty. Menu behind the counter, on the counter and after my struggle to order a combo, I found what I was looking for on the wall to my left. Otherwise service was very good. Under 10 minutes food delivery. Food was hot and a step up from fast-food. Plenty of fries but certainly from a frozen bag. I asked clerk what's up with the name. Apparently owners wanted a fun place to eat. Certainly fun for kids!! The jackpot was the huge scoop of Kemp's peppermint bon bon. Worth the $2.50! The meal deal was a little pricey but I guess this is tourist country. Worth a stop. read more

Love Happy's! This was introduced to me by my boyfriend over the last couple years, on the way to his cabin from the cities. This isn't McDonalds- I see reviews complaining of prices (not super cheap but I believe you get what you pay for/is family owned) or not catering to children. (Covid policy for bathrooms/indoors right now- there's a gas station a mile down the road to use) They're always so friendly and this is honestly my favorite "fast food" burger fries and choc shake. their 'happy's sauce' is awesome, too. They have so many different options, my boyfriend loves the chili and corn dog. It's a delicious option to check out- family owned, and have never had a negative experience. I don't ever leave reviews, but felt the 3.5 stars was not fair for Happy's. I crave Happy's and look forward to getting when we go up north. read more

NICE SERVICE FOR A SMALL JOINT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE I had stopped here years ago, and was not impressed at all. But today I went thru the drive thru for a quick snack and drink, and was surprisingly accommodated. The menu is "huge" ( Trump style.) My food was average, but the french fries tasted homemade. My sister bought a cabin up near Aitkin recently, and thanks to that I now head up North on 169 instead of 371. And Happy's is a fantastic reason to change your route if you are headed up North. (Plus you get to drive next to Mille Lacs...beautiful.) I would describe this food as "fast food plus". All your basics - cheeseburger baskets, kids meals, all that - but also bread bowl salads, soups, scoop ice cream and home made special k bars. A basketball hoop outside, simple rides for the kiddies, an indoor and outdoor playground and rabbits to peer at in a cage. All good. Today was me and my family's first time trying Happy's Drive- In. And I'll tell you we were not disappointed! I enjoyed a bacon cheeseburger and fries, which was a good burger. And I'm picky about burgers. My hubby tried the shrimp basket and the kids enjoyed chili dogs. We also had to try the ice cream which was such good custard ice cream. Stopped in on our way home to the metro from Grand Rapids. The burger basket was about $9 and the burger wasn't that great. The kids meals were overpriced too, and hardly any fries. The chicken nuggets in the kids meal were not even of the quality of the frozen chicken nuggets you can buy at the grocery store. In spite of the huge menu, Happy's doesn't try to be more than it is; a roadside family fast food restaurant. It is extremely kid-friendly so be prepared. (On the sign for the indoor play area it states that shoes cannot be worn but socks are required. If you do not have socks, they are available for purchase. LOL!) I drive past this past quite frequently in the summer and try to get there when I can. Today I was more than pleased that there were still opened tonight. I was able to get my craving satisfied. I stop there every time I can. Very good food, very friendly staff. Also as a coach, I have taken my track team and my cross country team there on several occasions. Most recently we were at a meet in Onamia which was running long. I called them half an hour before they closed and they stayed open until we arrived. My team loved it and thanked them graciously. The owner said he was always grateful when my teams stopped in and was happy to be able to serve us. This one of my favorite places to go and will continue to bring my teams there! read more

It's nice because they have a playground area outside for the family, dog friendly, and a drive-thru if you're on the way up to the cabin! My husband, myself and a friend drove 80 miles round trip to go to Happy's because of our previous visits and how much we loved the soft serve ice cream, above all. This visit was not as impressive. My burger was not HOT, my cheese was not melted, the 2 strips of bacon were not strips placed on top of the burger, but 2 small hunks of seriously under cooked fatty bacon stuck to the top of the bun. When it came to the soft serve, the "ice cream" was flat on 2 sides, icy and hollow, like it was filled with air. I reported it to the cashier who actually made our cones and she dismissed me with a remark about the machine being froze up. She never offered a refund or coupon replacement. I called the restaurant and left a message for the owner. Eight days later I still had not received a call. I called again today and was told the owner was busy, so I left another message. At 7:30 pm I still had not received a call. I phoned Happy's again and got the same girl who took my message and she said he left at 4:30. I asked her if the owner typically ignores customer calls and she said she didn't know. I asked her "you work there and you don't know anything about your owner"?. She commented that she left the message. I asked her if there was a manager. She said "she would get someone" A young man answered who identified himself. I asked if he was the manager and he said he was the owners son. Then he said and I quote "WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM" I said "excuse me" and he said again, "WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM. I said "Is that how you speak to a customer?" He said "oh, sorry" I went on to give him some general comments about our experience but indicated I figured he didn't care. After I gave him some basic information about our visit and food, he asked what we paid for our meal. I said I didn't know. He apologized and I said "and" he said "what do you want" I said I don't really know at this point. I said i have left 2 messages and waited 8 days for a call ,you were rude to me in spoke to me. At this point we were impressed with Happy's but not anymore. During the phone call, he asked if I had called "Happy's". I said, yes I did and I never got a response. He said that his dad usually gives out his cell phone for these calls. Gee, how would I get his cell phone, since I never got to speak to him? Nevertheless, the kid said he has no authority to do anything. Gee, he's the owners son and manager and he can't resolve a customer concern? After our last visit I did some reading on Happy's and found that this is not the original founder and owner of Happy's. The original founders and owners passed the business to their son who later sold it to these new owners. Perhaps they have maintained the same food quality and atmosphere. But as far as customer service. I don't want to say what I am thinking. I AM NOT HAPPY. On a side note the french fries in our first 3 visit were like eating worms, really soggy. But we overlooked it because we fell in love with the soft serve. I guess Happy's doesn't want our business anymore. Too bad for them, too bad for my soft serve cravings. read more
