We found a spot at the bar and the bartender greeted us immediately. We ordered drinks and checked out the fun shots menu on the wall. He said he didn't really know those shots so we just ordered a shot that we knew. He accidentally put something wrong in it but we tasted it. It was good so we drank it. He was a good vibe and nothing about this interaction was a negative!! We got the loaded tots and 2 burgers. The loaded tots had too many onions for my liking but they were still good and we were pleasantly surprised by the burgers! In the end we ended up coming back the next day too just because we could. Got the nachos and we weren't sad! My one negative, but I didn't remove a star because it would seem I'm in the minority, which i don't understand... live music. They had a band come in towards the end of our visit, which is what ultimately made it the end of our visit. The place is small, the band is loud.. conversing with friends ends at the point that the band starts. All in all.. highly recommend this place. Full bar, really good menu. And we'll definitely be back the next time we're in the area, just earlier in the day to avoid the live music! ;)

I highly suggest the ham and cheese balls with moonshine sauce as an appetizer. The fish sandwich is very well proportioned and filling! I really haven't had one bad item, ever! The beef is from the local meat market so if you need some good cuts of meat for the lake house/campsite/etc. be sure to stop by Thielen's Meats one block north! The wraps kick butt! Ok... So where to begin? I'll start by saying the outdoor patio (assume it is new) was very nice…read more However, that is where our compliments end. We drove from Garrison to Wahkon specifically to try this restaurant, as it was our 17-year wedding anniversary. When we arrived, we asked to be seated at a corner table on the patio as we wanted a quieter area for conversation with the other couple with us. After we were seated, we seemed to be forgotten. After 10 minutes with no service, my husband went to the host stand asking for our server. It took another 4 minutes for her to arrive... She didn't apologize for the delay, and after a few comments from us she said no one told her we were there. So... We ordered our drinks and food at the same time. My soup was brought out almost 5 minutes after the others. The drinks were brought out after the soup and one of our drinks was missing. The baked potato soup was soupy with hardly any potatoes in it. My medium steak was rare and had to be sent back. The prime rib was served without horseradish and we had to remind her to bring it. The prime rib was cold upon arrival. Our table did not have any condiments (the other tables all had a condiment stand with ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, etc.) and none were ever offered our brought. Oh, and by the time she returned for me to send my steak back, the others were pretty much done eating. When the server brought our check, she did apologize for our inconvenience, but no effort was made to comp our bill or ensure our satisfaction. (We were so ready to go at this point we did not ask for a manager). So disappointing... And they really weren't all that busy.

This is definitely a place where the employees and the locals have a good time and joke around, and sometimes if you are not a local, you don't receive the same level of attention. For the most part, refills of the AYCE fish were pretty quick. The fish was crispy and delicious, and the price was very reasonable. The only complaint was that there was mention on other sources (maybe outdated) about what was included. As of June 2026, the fish is AYCE, the sidewinders (fries) are not. We ordered an extra serving of those because they were delicious. Great joint and I would definitely come back again!

I ordered the unlimited fish fry and got the last serving around 8 PM. Not sure if I loved the fish (not realizing it was not walleye) but the breading was OK. I loved the fries that they called "swindlers". It was a steal for $14. I also ordered a side salad that I was impressed by the lettuce being more of a mixed green rather than iceberg. We were there when they were doing charity raffles for meat and other prizes. It was a fun atmosphere. The hubby really enjoyed his Buffalo boneless wings that were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The sauce was not too spicy for him. Based on all the reviews, maybe stick to the walleye!

I haven't been here since last winter, but since I was last here they have expanded the building and double the seating area and have done some other upgrades. Our waitress immediately seemed uninterested in making this night special for anyone. We tried engaging her to no avail. I actually think the server forgot to put her order in all together, which sucks because my sister had a 2 and 5 year old who were starving. I ordered the prime rib special, which came out COLD. We also asked to have my parents bill split between 4 of us, but that was apparently a huge hassle. Bottom line. Go to Muggs. We had family visiting from Oklahoma and spent the day in Mille Lacs. We were starving on our way…read moreback to Elk River and decided to stop in at Rough-Cut. The Saturday prime rib special was one of the deciding factors. Within the first few minutes, we learned that they were completely sold out [mind you it was before 7pm]. The two biggest disappointments were service, or lack thereof, and the amount of time it took for our order to be filled. For context, after ordering, we waited over 45 minutes for our food to be served. And when it did come, it was luke warm and not served at the same time. My husband was nearly done with his meal before I received mine. While completely outside the control of Rough-Cut, we sat, very, very hungry listening to some loud mouth drunk talking about how many girls his friend "banged". Mind you....we were sitting on the restaurant side, not the bar side. Just added to an already bad experience. Rough-Cut needs more and higher quality wait staff and a smaller menu that they can actually fill. Timely and of quality. For extra context, the dining room was busy, but we did not wait to sit down and there were open tables the entire time we were there. My recommendation for those traveling along 169 ....keep going. Sorry!
