Chinese food on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Tracy L.

We heard about Happy Wings & Fried Rice from two coworkers. Those guys crowed about the restaurant from the top of the house! So we decided to see about it for ourselves one Saturday afternoon. Both of them warned us it was in "da hood". One even recounted a gunshots incident a la "Boyz in the Hood" that made even duck or run for cover! This is one of those restaurants that YELP should add to as a "Best Hole-in-the-Wall restaurants" category. Despite it being where it is, please do not let that dissuade you from going. No lie. We went there early one Sunday morning [11:39 AM], saw about 15 questionable characters hanging around, and made a U-turn. Sandwiched between a food store and a urban wear store, this is expected. Just go, and get out if you feel comfortable. You can even order ahead. Speaking of sandwiched, there are 2-3 seats inside. And with the incredibly small amount of space between the front door and the order counter, you might feel like a sardine in a can, if you wait inside for your order. We received a happy greeting, which is important for us. The variety of wing flavors can be overwhelming [same as with Perry Wings], especially when you factor in the heat levels. As with most places that serve flavored chicken wings with a plethora of choices, you can mix flavors. But we really didn't go for the wings. We went for the House Special Rice! THAT rice separates this place from all other run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurants! THAT rice AND the amount of it you get with your order. This is a soul food Chinese restaurant. So they know their demographic. Happy Wings & Fried Rice should be your new go to for Chinese food. But don't take our word for it, read the YELP reviews and 400+ Google reviews!

Great flavor on the wings! We got the butter lemon pepper. They have plenty of wing sauce options which is cool! The fried rice is also great - we went with the special house rice which comes with shrimp, ham, chicken, krab and more! So tasty! The service is so-so. Lastly, The place is only take out and they don't offer delivery through any app service.

Fried rice was terrible; the food lacked authenticity. The fried rice tasted like it had been microwaved.

I'm super picky with Chinese restaurants and am always hesitant to try someplace new. China wok did not disappoint! We ordered to go on a rainy Saturday night. Ordering Online via their website was super easy and they gave an estimated 30 minutes until it would be ready. When my husband went to pick it up, he said the credit card machine was down so it took a few extra minutes but everything was ready within the time given. We started with the wanton soup. I added this on a wim since it was raining it sounded so cozy. It was the best wonton soup I've had! Nice and gingery and tasty! My husband ordered the sweet and sour combination dinner and I ordered the honey chicken combination dinner. The dinners come with fried rice and an egg roll. Good portion and plenty for a leftover lunch the next day. I was a bit bummed that the chicken had the sauce on the side but not that big of a deal. The egg roll was a little over fried as well. Overall, definitely found my new spot for Chinese to go

The restaurant called when I took longer than 16 minutes to get there to see where I was which was annoying considering there's a lot of traffic around here. Very meh.

Now I have to admit, when my butcher recommended their "crispy steak," the idea of a fried steak was NOT particularly appealing to me. But I decided to give it a try anyway, and I was pleasantly surprised! The prime New York steak is only lightly dusted with water chestnut flour, so it's not heavily battered or greasy at all. It just gives the outside a gentle crisp while the steak itself stays perfectly tender. It's thinly sliced and served with sautéed peppers, onions and cabbage in a garlic, soy and burgundy wine sauce. Really, really good! I ordered mine to go, and I have to mention their packaging because I don't know WHAT kind of magic they're doing with these containers, but my food is always still super hot after the 10-minute drive home. Not warm--HOT, like it just came off the stove. I definitely appreciate that with takeout. While I was waiting for my order, I also took some time to admire the many awards displayed throughout the restaurant. Rainbow Palace is clearly an award-winning restaurant, and judging by that collection, they've been collecting accolades for YEARS! The Crispy Steak does cost a pretty penny, so this isn't exactly your inexpensive neighborhood Chinese takeout. But the quality of the ingredients, preparation and portion definitely feel a step above your typical takeout spot. Another delicious meal from Rainbow Palace, and apparently I need to keep working my way through their menu!

It's in a different type of location -- a very small strip of businesses with only a few spots in front -- in the middle of a residential location. We were driving by between lunch and dinner and decided to stop to bring some food home for a later meal. When we stopped by, we got to meet the owners and chef. They were both very welcoming and friendly. He told us about some special meals and made suggestions. He was preparing some blue crabs for his own lunch, and they looked wonderful. You can get some special meals here, off menu, if you preorder. We went with a couple of our usual choices so we could see how they compared. We ordered some pork with Chinese vegetables and an order of Singapore rice noodles. Plus, for me an order of egg roll. The rice noodles were such a large portion that it filled two containers. And we wound up eating several meals from our take home food. The eggroll was very good. I ate one right away! There were two to the order. It had a different crispy wrapper -- it seemed house made. And it was filled with larger bits of meat. I really liked it. There was a lot of large flat pork slices in with the vegetables. In a brown sauce, there was broccoli, bok choy, pea pods, etc. It came with a side container of white rice. The rice noodles were fragrant with curry, but it only had a slight kick (as in not too spicy). There were lots of shrimp, chicken, and pork strips mixed in with the thin noodles. This dish was addictive. We are so glad we stopped to try them. Really one of the better Chinese places we've tried and certainly one of the better take-out places. Wish they were closer, or we'd be there more often.
