I initially found this groomer off of Google when I first got my puppy I decided to give them a try because they did not require proof of shots, when we made it to the salon everything gave off a mom and pop vibe which is what i was looking for. I had heard of this place and they came highly recommended for small dogs to be groomed, however they are way out of my way. But, the usual groomer I use was booked for months. I called Happy Tails and they were available that day and all day the next two days. Great! I feel now that was a warning sign. Took my shih-tzu in and Ray groomed her. To his credit, he cut her very short like I asked but her hair is uneven all over the place. My neighbor said she looked homeless. Lol. Photos are attached showing how the hair on her forehead is uneven in a weird lopsided Mohawk and her legs have random patches of long hairs. Weird. For $60 I'll go elsewhere. This place is a joke... wish I could give them zero stars. My husband took our pup here for the first and it will be our last time. I don't know who cut her hair but shame on you and shame on the owner for approving her hair cut. Her hair on her face is all uneven, one ear hair length is longer than the other. She was shivering when she got home, so I'm sure she was mistreated. We've been taking our dog to Kriser's for years and all the groomers love her and compliment how sweet she is. I truly wish I would've seen some of these before taking my 8month old Goldendoodle here for a cut. When we dropped him we asked for "about 1 inch off" the owner decided to give him "the spring cut" . MY DOG LOOKS AWFUL!!! "I didn't shave him or anything but his coat was thick hard to get the clippers through" from Ray. Mind you I personally brushed my dog out to make sure he wasn't matted to avoid shorter cuts. He has jagged lines ALL OVER. He is so short and there isn't even 1inch left on his body- (excluding ears and face ). When I got home I noticed more horrific spots. Shown in the pictures... under front legs-- the difference in one side to the other-- it is also obvious they did not even trim the "sanitary area" because the hair my dogs parts are longer then everywhere else except his tail. I paid $90 for this cut. I brought these pictures back to explain my confusion and disappointment in the cut and Ray had already left and some other employee was there. After I called THREE TIMES with no answer I walked in, the employee was rude kept saying "oh yea i don't know what to tell you" "yea we usually shave armpit areas" "we don't do that region since it's delicate" had a come back for everything and NOT ONCE said how can we help fix this or make this better for you... He only had 1 dog in there when i asked if i could bring my dog to RE trim the testicle region and he looked at me like i had 3 heads and said "today no you have to come back tomorrow talk to Ray" "i don't know what to tell you" is what it is mentality. He then laughed at me when I said this is horrible customer service and a waste of $90 . IF YOU HAVE ANY SORT OF POODLE MIX DO NOTTTTTT BRING YOUR PET HERE. They blame it on the type of fur/hair the dog has rather than the fact they just are BAD! Horrible customer service . This was our second and last experience with Happy Tails. We brought our Maltipoo in for grooming 8 weeks prior to this appointment and the cut was great (see 1st photo). The workers were pleasant and the job was done in less than 2 hours. Fast forward to our recent visit (photos 2 and 3) - I call to schedule a drop off (they do same-day) and spoke with the same man from the previous time. He alluded to the fact that they were very busy but since our dog was small, I could bring him in. I take our dog in, show him the picture of the cut he did the last time and said it was perfect. He said "oh yea a spring cut, we'll fix him right up". I come back 3 1/2 hours later to pick up my dog and before he brings him out he is fumbling for excuses - "we found some mats, do you bathe him?". His body is completely shaven, his head was left long but completely uneven. There is a part on his back leg that was taken extremely close to the skin. There is a large chunk of fur clipped out of his left ear. His eyes are incredibly watery and tears are streaming down his face. He continues to hold his right eye partially closed and the skin around it is red/irritated. I will say that Maltese breeds are prone to tearing, but it is obvious that something was done to irritate or harm his eyes. To be very honest, I was in shock and paid the $60 (in cash, which they require) and left. Our dog was bathed 11 days prior to this appointment (it is normally every 14-15 days but he had been outside and needed it). He is completely brushed out with a blow dryer after he is bathed. He is on an 8-week grooming schedule. I brushed and combed him immediately before taking him here because we all know how groomers can be about mats. I understand that dogs can become matted and it is a nightmare to get out. However, shaving a dog down to the skin is not an executive decision made by the groomer without any communication to the owner first. If a barber finds an issue with your hair, they do not just shave your head without talking to you about the issue. Would you be ok if they did? Considering I carried the dog inside (he fits in my hand) and brushed him out before the appointment it is absolutely an excuse to say that the dog was so horribly matted he had to be shaved. But even if he was, the courteous thing to do is to give the owner a call and say "listen, we have an issue, how would you like to proceed? Can we charge an extra fee for de-matting? Is it too far gone that he needs to be shaven?" I am a very reasonable person and am willing to separate the emotion I feel when looking at my botched dog and instead focus on the primary concern - communication. My hunch is that they were busy and didn't want to deal with it. So, they just shaved him completely. Again, whether the dog was completely matted or not is not the issue here - it is the clear lack of communication and refusal to accept this. I understand issues happen, even mistakes sometimes. But the lack of accountability to simply admit that you should have called the owner before completely shaving a dog is unbelievable. I called a day after to express my frustration and was again reminded - "the dog was so terribly matted, he screamed when I tried to brush him". He blamed everything on us. Continuously attacked and tried to talk over me. Insulted our grooming habits - "you don't brush him, you should use conditioner, you should really get a grip on those tear stains". After repeating several times that "regardless of any of that this is about communication, you should have done the courteous thing and called me first"......he hangs up on me. I have been yelled at on the phone countless times for work and I have absolutely never hung up on someone. I think that speaks for itself. In the end, there is no reconciliation here. We will not be back and we will make sure that our countless friends with dogs are aware of the service we received and more importantly, the lack of acceptance that even the thought of a different approach could have resulted in a better outcome. For now, we will sit tight and wait for the 3 months it will take for his hair to grow to a reasonable length again. read more

I've never experienced such a bad dog groomer, and all I did was stop in to get my dog's nails trimmed. I walked in, the owner is completely maskless, and I had to get close to him to hold my dog up to the window while he trimmed her nails. He was forceful and did an awful job. One nail is bleeding because he got the quick. The rest are splintered and jagged. I will never, ever go back here. The nail trim cost $13 but at least the COVID test will be free. read more

I have been bringing all my dogs to Happy Tails for over 15 years. Rescues(nice ones and not so niceones), divas, 20 year old dogs, and now my 11 month old English (not Amercan) cocker spaniel pure breed and unducked. Ray cuts him exactly to breed standard. That breed is very rare so he knows the business. And he works on him hard every time because this breed 's fur gets matted in a day. I get free brush out between groomings to ensure the dog has a coat in top form at all times. He knows what he is doing and knows how to handle dogs of all demeanors. The place is full of hair because owners don't groom their dogs often enough so when Ray gets them it is raining dead fur. He always checks for fleas and when he was working on my old dachshund he always was careful due to her losing strength and multiple skin tags. Dogs are shaved mostly because they are so fully matted due to lack of regular grooming that there is nothing else to do. I'll add that his prices are reasonable and have remained very competitive since I've been going there. read more

They abused my trust in their service when we dropped my 3 month old puppy off for a grooming and completely fucked his hair up. Please refer to the picture below. Meeka almost always gets small mats behind her ears, but it's never been an issue when getting her groomed. When I returned to pick her up, her body was shaved, her legs left long, and her ear fur was chopped off so she had a chunk of fur missing. I will attach photos. We have since moved but travel back to Lakeview to have our fur baby groomed. Our last two dogs were terrified to get groomed but not with Ray at Happy Tails. Our new rescue dog is not good with changes. She also loves going to Happy Tails. My husband and myself feel that Ray is a dog whisper person. Have never seen a dog get upset there. We sent my toy poodle and mini golden doodle to get groomed during the quarantine and we were so excited to see they were open. They completely butchered both dogs. The toy poodle had mats on the ears but wasn't bad anywhere else. Both dogs were completely shaven and they are not even!! My toy poodle has jagged lines. They cut the mats out of the ears so now huge chunks of his ears are missing. He has uneven patches of fur on his paws and the back of his head. I am literally HORRIFIED at the grooming of the two dogs. It's one thing to shave them, but to completely butcher them and give the worst cuts ever is just pathetic. New to the area so tried Happy Tails out. Wish I had a better experience like so many others here. My dog's heads was cut messy at best. I asked for a 'round the head' technique on my dog's head like I've told many groomers before (Google it to see what I'm talking about). They didn't do this at all. Not only is the trim on the head uneven, but there's a finger-length spot under one of his ears in which they went down to the skin. I don't mind a mistake, but how about telling me that you shaved a part of my dog by accident instead of hoping I don't see it? The other side of his head under the ear was equally strange. Overall, the head and neck are just uneven and I can't wait for the hair to grow in so all these mistakes disappear. They told me my dog did great (like I've heard from all other groomers before!) so I'm perplexed as to how the cut turned out bad. Not a fan of a place that keeps dogs in cages either. This is my go to for no nonsense grooming for my muffin. Muffin is at ease when I drop her off, which is a comfort for me. They usually are done with her within 2-3 hours so she doesn't have to be caged. They give muffin a decent cut and have her smelling fresh. If you want the bows and ribbons this is not your place. If you just want your dog clean, fresh and a decent cut for a reasonable price this is the place. read more

I don't mean like "The employees will walk the dog during the day" or something like that, a woman who is not affiliated with the business will come in, be allowed to take your dog out for a spin and bring it back. Just an absolute stranger who already walks her dog off leash. This person isn't certified, isn't on payroll, is literally just someone who walks into the store. I have been bringing my yorkie here for 5 years and absolutely love this place. Look it's not the type of place that is a boutique cutesy kind of place but that's also why it is so much more affordable. Other groomers I brought my yorkie to would charge 100+ without tip. Here the cost ranges from 30-48 depending on what I get. They always do a great job with her hair cuts too as I am a little picky (I like her ears hair being longer hehe) but after doing hair for so long it's not a surprise. If you care at all about your pet, please do not take them to this place. When I walked through the door to pick up my dog, the groomer said "oh hey, I gotta tell ya...your dog ripped his nail off" . Then he put my dog's bloodied nail on the counter to see. I gasped! I have taken my dog to many groomers, and nothing crazy like this has ever happened. The groomer stated that he would pay the vet bill, but he didn't think a visit to the vet was necessary. I looked at my dogs paw with a missing nail and almost cried. The groomer had packed the empty nail socket with some antiseptic stuff that looked like yellow sand. My dog seemed to be ok (happy to see me), but just as I thought, I got him home and he started licking his paw and favoring it like it hurt. I told the groomer that I wanted him to agree (in writing) to pay any/all vet bills if something happens. He signed the back of his card with a note stating that he agreed to pay the vet bill if there was one. I'm waiting to hear back from my vet right now. I personally have no gripes about this place but something about it rubbed me the wrong way. I've only been in once, to have my cats nails trimmed. And yea, they did that... But it made me a bit uneasy when they asked me to leave and come back later. Maybe I'm weird, but it only takes a few seconds to clip those claws. I'm not sure why they asked me to leave and return for him. They weren't busy or anything, my cat was the only animal in the place. The only thing that was happy about this experience is when my dog saw that I was back to pick her up. The $50 "trim" seems like nothing more than a rushed buzz cut on her body and a sloppy scissor job on her face. Everything is uneven. I specifically asked for "just a little bit off because we have our wedding next week and we want our dog in our photos" but there are spots on her legs where they buzzed down to the skin. I've been bringing my GS Piper here for 18 months. These guys are a no frills, no fuss groomer who do a great job washing my dog. She always comes out smelling great a d looking like a big floof ball. Piper's a rescue with some dog aggression issues, but these guys make sure Piper and all the other dogs are always safe and they do what they can to minimize her stress by putting her in a covered crate when she's drying off. read more

An unqualified 5 star recommendation. I have two dogs, a Westie and a Yellow Lab. While the Lab gets brushed in the backyard and gets bathed in the tub, the Westie requires a bit more maintenance during the summer, when he needs a trim about every 6 weeks. He used to go to Petco and Petsmart. While they were nice and they tried, they never were really sensitive to my requests not to give him that sissy Westie cut with the round head, like a cat's lion cut. Maybe they have a standard protocol at those larger chains that they have to follow(?). Anyway, he's been to Happy Tails 5 or 6 times now. Initially, I said "please something a little more masculine than the Westie lion cut, I don't care what it is but he's tough and you're a pro so do your thing." They nailed it then and have nailed it each time since then. Sure, they can be a little rude, but I think the quality of their work outweighs that and then some. We often put up with petulant performers, hairdressers, chefs, and so on, so long as they're good enough... Why not do the same for a groomer? read more
