This place is a joke... wish I could give them zero stars. My husband took our pup here for the first and it will be our last time. I don't know who cut her hair but shame on you and shame on the owner for approving her hair cut. Her hair on her face is all uneven, one ear hair length is longer than the other. She was shivering when she got home, so I'm sure she was mistreated. We've been taking our dog to Kriser's for years and all the groomers love her and compliment how sweet she is. Because they were booked till June we decided to try a new place out, but that was a big mistake. Never coming back here again.

Love this place. Ray is amazing. If I still lived in the city I'd continue to see him for my two pups. He was so nice to them. One of their tags fell off, and he even dropped it off at my house. :).

I truly wish I would've seen some of these before taking my 8month old Goldendoodle here for a cut. When we dropped him we asked for "about 1 inch off" the owner decided to give him "the spring cut" . MY DOG LOOKS AWFUL!!! "I didn't shave him or anything but his coat was thick hard to get the clippers through" from Ray. Mind you I personally brushed my dog out to make sure he wasn't matted to avoid shorter cuts. He has jagged lines ALL OVER. He is so short and there isn't even 1inch left on his body- (excluding ears and face ). When I got home I noticed more horrific spots. Shown in the pictures... under front legs-- the difference in one side to the other-- it is also obvious they did not even trim the "sanitary area" because the hair my dogs parts are longer then everywhere else except his tail. I paid $90 for this cut. I brought these pictures back to explain my confusion and disappointment in the cut and Ray had already left and some other employee was there. After I called THREE TIMES with no answer I walked in, the employee was rude kept saying "oh yea i don't know what to tell you" "yea we usually shave armpit areas" "we don't do that region since it's delicate" had a come back for everything and NOT ONCE said how can we help fix this or make this better for you... He only had 1 dog in there when i asked if i could bring my dog to RE trim the testicle region and he looked at me like i had 3 heads and said "today no you have to come back tomorrow talk to Ray" "i don't know what to tell you" is what it is mentality. He then laughed at me when I said this is horrible customer service and a waste of $90 . IF YOU HAVE ANY SORT OF POODLE MIX DO NOTTTTTT BRING YOUR PET HERE. They blame it on the type of fur/hair the dog has rather than the fact they just are BAD! Horrible customer service . We are supposed to take photos with our pup at our wedding ceremony this weekend, just extremely disappointing.

This was our second and last experience with Happy Tails. We brought our Maltipoo in for grooming 8 weeks prior to this appointment and the cut was great (see 1st photo). The workers were pleasant and the job was done in less than 2 hours. Fast forward to our recent visit (photos 2 and 3) - I call to schedule a drop off (they do same-day) and spoke with the same man from the previous time. He alluded to the fact that they were very busy but since our dog was small, I could bring him in. I take our dog in, show him the picture of the cut he did the last time and said it was perfect. He said "oh yea a spring cut, we'll fix him right up". I come back 3 1/2 hours later to pick up my dog and before he brings him out he is fumbling for excuses - "we found some mats, do you bathe him?". His body is completely shaven, his head was left long but completely uneven. There is a part on his back leg that was taken extremely close to the skin. There is a large chunk of fur clipped out of his left ear. His eyes are incredibly watery and tears are streaming down his face. He continues to hold his right eye partially closed and the skin around it is red/irritated. I will say that Maltese breeds are prone to tearing, but it is obvious that something was done to irritate or harm his eyes. To be very honest, I was in shock and paid the $60 (in cash, which they require) and left. Our dog was bathed 11 days prior to this appointment (it is normally every 14-15 days but he had been outside and needed it). He is completely brushed out with a blow dryer after he is bathed. He is on an 8-week grooming schedule. I brushed and combed him immediately before taking him here because we all know how groomers can be about mats. I understand that dogs can become matted and it is a nightmare to get out. However, shaving a dog down to the skin is not an executive decision made by the groomer without any communication to the owner first. If a barber finds an issue with your hair, they do not just shave your head without talking to you about the issue. Would you be ok if they did? Considering I carried the dog inside (he fits in my hand) and brushed him out before the appointment it is absolutely an excuse to say that the dog was so horribly matted he had to be shaved. But even if he was, the courteous thing to do is to give the owner a call and say "listen, we have an issue, how would you like to proceed? Can we charge an extra fee for de-matting? Is it too far gone that he needs to be shaven?" I am a very reasonable person and am willing to separate the emotion I feel when looking at my botched dog and instead focus on the primary concern - communication. My hunch is that they were busy and didn't want to deal with it. So, they just shaved him completely. Again, whether the dog was completely matted or not is not the issue here - it is the clear lack of communication and refusal to accept this. I understand issues happen, even mistakes sometimes. But the lack of accountability to simply admit that you should have called the owner before completely shaving a dog is unbelievable. I called a day after to express my frustration and was again reminded - "the dog was so terribly matted, he screamed when I tried to brush him". He blamed everything on us. Continuously attacked and tried to talk over me. Insulted our grooming habits - "you don't brush him, you should use conditioner, you should really get a grip on those tear stains". After repeating several times that "regardless of any of that this is about communication, you should have done the courteous thing and called me first"......he hangs up on me. I have been yelled at on the phone countless times for work and I have absolutely never hung up on someone. I think that speaks for itself. In the end, there is no reconciliation here. We will not be back and we will make sure that our countless friends with dogs are aware of the service we received and more importantly, the lack of acceptance that even the thought of a different approach could have resulted in a better outcome. For now, we will sit tight and wait for the 3 months it will take for his hair to grow to a reasonable length again.

Took my GSD here for the first time for a bath and was a little stressed about leaving him, but they were welcoming and took great care of him. He came out looking so clean and fluffy! The place doesn't look like much but they get the job done and are good with the pups. Thank you!

Happy Tails is the best in the biz! I have been taking my two cocker spaniels here for the past 3 years, and they always leave looking great. Ray is kind, gentle with skittish dogs, and committed to his craft. Highly recommend!

This is actually my first Yelp! review and it is to warn all pet owners thinking of bringing their pet here. This place is complete DOG SHIT. They abused my trust in their service when we dropped my 3 month old puppy off for a grooming and completely fucked his hair up. Please refer to the picture below. It is complete trash, looks like maggots ate his fur and done very unevenly. They were rude and acted like they were a "know it all" while I spoke to them on the phone. In the sense that they did follow what me and my boyfriend requested them to do. Thought their affordable price was a steal, but truthfully made the worst mistake. Please avoid this place and never make the same mistake like how I did.

I love this place so much!! They do a great job on my little chihuahua mix. She has weird wiry hair and they tame it so it looks great AND grows out nicely!! Lately I've been requesting a Mohawk and it looks better than ever!!!

Yikes.. I wanted to like this place so much because the man who scheduled my apt and groomed my Pom was so kind and flexible! I showed him a pic of the "bear cut" I wanted my Pom to get (short fluff, but not at all buzzed), and he seemed to understand completely what I wanted. Meeka almost always gets small mats behind her ears, but it's never been an issue when getting her groomed. When I returned to pick her up, her body was shaved, her legs left long, and her ear fur was chopped off so she had a chunk of fur missing. I will attach photos. I called to express my disappointment with the cut and the older man that groomed her was very sweet and offered to re-cut her for free.. But there was nothing left to cut! I appreciate the kind service but this cut took 3 months of covering with a sweater to fix.

I was concerned about this business based on some of the feedback on Yelp and that of a friend. The business is very informal. However, they did a great job on my black mini schnauzer. Best job from anyone here locally since I moved here from San Diego. Highly recommend!! read more

We've used Happy Tails for over a decade. They treat our dogs like family. Our Bob stops by at 3pm each day for treats and love. We're never seen anything but care and well groomed pets there. They are a part of what makes Lake View a wonderful place to live. read more

We came here after a recommendation and I am very glad we did. I have gone to many places and asked for the summer cut and never get it. This place gave me exactly what I asked for, a very short cut for my Cavalier. She looked great! Ray the owner was very nice and friendly and you can tell he loves the fur babies! My charge was $40 which was more than reasonable and the most affordable place I have seen around here. We will definitely bring our dog back here. Cash or check only! read more

I'm kind of surprised by the bi-polar reviews on this place...so much so that I almost didn't give Happy Tails a shot but I'm glad to say I did! I have a wonderful black lab mix named Raleigh, she's the perfect dog in almost every way except for her unending /insatiable shedding in the summer months. This Friday my annoyance came to a head and I called a bunch of groomers in the area to see if they could "work us in". In comes Happy Tails - we were in the shop 20 minutes later. She got the whole shebang - bath, shave, toe nail clipping etc at an amazing price $44 (cash/check only). This place is no frills so let me say that up front, but come on ppl it's a dog groomer - its not like she was going to the prom or getting married...:) I don't need a fancy dog salon just good grooming at a good price and Happy Tails delivered. I can't speak to a breed that would truly need the "art" of dog grooming because mine is a low maintenance lab. However we will be returning to HT, their accommodating attitude and competitive prices can't be beat! read more

I have never left a Yelp review before but feel the need to warn others never to trust this "groomer". I brought my Pomeranian in and very clearly instructed Ray to give a minor sanitary trim around the backside (i.e., don't touch tail or anything else). Despite my incredibly clear instructions, when I went to pick my Pom up, Ray had completely shaved the full back side and part of my Pom's tail. What kind of a psycho shaves a Pom's tail? This is a double coated breed and an actual groomer would know it's incredibly damaging to the dog's coat to fully shave off part of the tail -- I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my Pom's coat will not be permanently damaged from this mishap. I'm incredibly disappointed and will never trust this "groomer" with my pom again. Do not assume that Ray will follow any instructions you provide on how to groom your dog no matter how clearly you articulate those instructions to him. Steer clear of this place. read more

I have my ups and downs with this place. I have a little 4lb yorkie and I've taken him here multiple times. The cost started at $30, and suddenly jumped up to $40. It's a little inconsistent, the first time they called me to let me know that he was done. The second time, after 3 hours had passed, I called them and they were like "oh yeah, he's been done!" I guess I should have read their minds. The guy (maybe he's the owner) is super nice, and always suggests that if I want to bring him back in a week for a quick trim up for free, no problem. Everything seems fine, my dog's come back clean and doesn't seem traumatized, so that's good. We'll see, it was definitely worth it at $30, but for $40 I could take him somewhere much nicer. read more

I just moved to Andersonville and am actually stressing about where to get my dog groomed. I loved Happy Tails. The two guys might seem weird at first, but they are so loving, caring, and patient with our pets. My dog is a rescue from an abusive home who gets extremely nervous with strangers and NEVER had a problem there. He always came out looking professionally groomed. They listened to what I wanted, charged $25 less than Petco (where I had issues with nails cut too short), and I never had any issues (with nails, cut, etc). They are also great at trying to get him in same day when needed. My only recommendation is to call one hour to thirty minutes before the time they give you as they were usually done faster than they thought. I just didn't want him sitting there. I highly recommend this place! read more

I have to be honest, I was really afraid of taking my dog here after reading some of the reviews but I just picked him up from a wash and cut and he looks fantastic! Ray was such a sweet guy and took care of my 50lb terrier lab mix with no problem. Initially, I was afraid because my dog is a bit rambunctious with other people, but Ray was able to do a fantastic job with no complaints! Just took my puppy Lolly to Happy Tails and had the best experience. This is my first time with Happy Tails on Broadway and Ray cut her. She looks amazing. Ray was so nice to me too. The cost of the service is very reasonable in my opinion and I don't mind that it is a "cash only" service. Best of all the shop is In walking distance of where I live. We have come here twice now for our young goldendoodle and they have done an excellent job! Ernie is on the easy end as far as doodle cuts go, but every time they have followed my directions perfectly and Ernie has come out looking so handsome! Also the price is very affordable compared to other places in the neighborhood. We used to go to Petsmart but when Ernie was no longer considers a "puppy" they raised the price by $60 and when I called other places in Lakeview for quotes I was told that doodles would be a $120 MINIMUM regardless of hair type. Needless to say we will be regular customers from now on! read more

Happy Tails has been grooming my Persian felines for many many years (over 15 years), I lost count. We go about every 8 to 10 weeks. Most of the time my cats get lion cuts, but in the winter I try to keep their coats longer so they get a good combing and a bath. The groomer always trims/shaves their delicate areas so we can minimize "presents" around the home, their nails are trimmed and the tufts on their paws are trimmed. They look so clean and pretty after their service. I always drop off first thing in the morning and Ray usually says to call at 1pm, but they are usually done by 12pm. I have learned over the years to call earlier. Ray is always kind and my cats smell lovely and are mat free when they are picked up. read more

I just moved to chicago and brought my dogs from los angeles having fear of who would groom them and be good. I read the reviews and called Ray and he made me feel comfortable and was even better in person and the job he did grooming was awesome! Our little Morkie was a hot mess. I am a stylist so his hair is important to me He loathes being brushed or combed out after a bath. I've been desperately searching for the right stylist for Mikey! I've had it with those knots. While shopping for some toys I saw Happy Tails. I tend to be a kind person but at first I thought "broke down palace", no way. Ray then appeared at the window and I liked him so reluctantly I handed Mikey over, expecting not to be thrilled. At pick up I saw a Cash Only sign, I thought that was shady, we paid and quickly left! OMG.com! Ray did a gorgeous job, he combed ALL the knots out and did a suburb job period! I am super picky ( a little known fact) and he pleased me. Ray is excellent. Shame on me for judging their storefront, after it was clean. Concerning the cash only sign, at only $40.00 why should the bank get a cut, they rip off merchants anyhow. That must be how they stay so reasonable. Thanks Ray so much. We took our dogs there and they did a terrible job on one of them. It looked as if they took the clippers down each of her sides and that was it. They did not trim her head, back, legs, or neck. We had to come home and take our own clippers to even out the cut. Avoid this place if you want your dog to look good. read more

I was nervous to go here because of some of the reviews regarding nail cutting issues, but we were desperate because Kriser's had a two week waiting list and our dog was a matted mess. I'm so glad we did! First of all, this place is right around the corner, so it could not be more convenient. Secondly, I really like the transparency of being able to see what iis going on in the grooming area. (I don't like places that take your dog in the back and you have no idea what it is like back there.) The owner/groomer is lovely and friendly and accommodating. We brought in pictures of how we wanted our dog to look and he matched it PERFECTLY. The price is very reasonable and you do not have to plan weeks in advance to get a grooming appointment; we got same day service. So happy to have this quality groomer in the neighborhood. read more

I've brought my dog here several times for a wash & trim and I think they do a great job. My Shiba has long fur (a white shiba) and it has to be trimmed, especially in the Summer. She always looks fantastic afterwards -- I only wish the fur didn't grow back so fast! read more

Took my puppy here for her first haircut, a little Havachon, i got her back and hair coat was butchered. There was obviously no care taken in this cut.. and not even close to a Havachon cut..(look on the internet.. there are picture if you don know what a havachon cut is!!) There were very short spots and super long spots.. just a TRUE HACK JOB!! I am a hair stylist and i know a good cut. This could have been done by my 6 yr old niece.. NEVER EVER GO HERE! IM MY OPINION THIS WAS THE WORST CUT I HAVE EVER OVER PAID FOR.. $40.. REALLY!! MY PUPPY IS 3LBS, AND THEY PROBALLY SPEND MAYBE 10MINS ON HER.. IF I COULD GIVE NEGATIVE STARS I WOULD.. read more

I only took my cat here once and I won't be returning. When I walked in I saw there was a sign indicating they only took cash. I asked if they could trim my cat's claws while I ran to an ATM, to which an older gentleman agreed to and took my cat in his carrier from me. As I was leaving, the man knocked the carrier off the counter and it fell to the ground with my cat inside. I ran back up to the counter but he just grabbed the carrier and said, "I got it." without turning to me or apologizing. I felt so uncomfortable leaving my cat with him and won't bring him back. read more

This is a no-frills place run by two guys who seem to be pros at quick and painless grooming. What I appreciate most about them is precisely their efficiency. My little guy can be pretty skittish at the groomers. These guys get him in and out fast! That seems to lessen the trauma. Some groomers that are less experienced take longer and I have to listen to my dog crying and yelping for way longer than necessary. Way to go. Gets the job done! Then I always treat my fur baby to a little something next door at Wigglyville. read more

Happy Tails have been grooming my dogs for over 20 years and I am delighted with how they treat my dogs and how they look when they come back from being groomed. I have a very large breed ( actually this is the third dog of the same breed that Happy Tails has taken care of) and they have been gentle,, careful and meticulous with all my animals. I highly recommend Happy Tails. The groomers are pleasant and really nice people. read more

I just brought my puppy home from here. They washed and dry'ed her hair, cut it, styled it and clipped here nails. They said it would take about forty five minutes. Thirty five minutes later Ray called and said she was ready. She looked and smelled great including a new holiday scarf. Ray also gave me some great tips on new puppy's and their grooming. Terrific experience. Pepper's is happy and so am I. read more

I have a one year old miniature schnauzer, labradoodle mix. If you know anything about poodle mixes, you know they need a lot of grooming as their hair gets matted easily. I have been to Petsmart & PetCo multiple times to get him groomed. They charge about $75 for him and take 4-5 hours. I decided to try Happy Tails because it is right by my house and we could walk. LIke I mentioned, I've been many times to get him groomed and this is the best place by far. Both men there were as nice as can be. & I got him back, perfectly shaved and clean in an hour for $45. His ears were cleaned better than I have ever seen them and he was perfect all over. I've had issues with Petsmart cutting him too close and making him bleed and they always blamed it on how "rambunctious" he is and that he doesn't stop moving. They had no problems with him here. Every time we leave Petsmart, my puppy always seems like such a mess and takes hours to calm down. He was perfectly happy and calm as soon as I picked him up from Happy Tails. I am very over protective of my dog and I recommend this place to anyone! read more

They have always done a nice job on my dogs. I pick them up and they look adorable, smell great and are sportin a cute little bandana. These guys know what they are doing so most interactions are short and to the point which some might perceive as rude. The only thing is, I think they make the prices up as they go. It does not seem to follow the chart. Ask the price when you drop the dog off. read more

I've been bringing successive generations of dogs here for about 10 - 15 years, and they've always done a great job. Sometimes, they call to say the dogs are ready, sometimes not.... I always just ask what time I should call to find out if they're done and go with that. As a supporter of local businesses, we were more than eager to give these guys a try, but sadly we should have passed them on by. The facilities smell and are a little dirty. I asked that they trim my dog up and just "clean him up". This is not what happened. They shaved him and cut everything close. Too close in some cases. Looked like a completely different animal. The shave wasn't even even! Choppy and uneven all over! Completely unhappy. And on top of all that the bandana they tied around his neck was raggedy and uneven as well. This place is a JOKE. This was Henry's first grooming and being a new puppy mom I was nervous! But Ray the owner put me at rest and low and behold Henry came out looking like a puppy that could have his picture in a magazine! After his grooming I took him to sign him up for puppy classes and the owner of the obedience school told me who ever did Henry's grooming did a wonderful job! I agree! Good job Happy Tails ..... I bring my fat cat here for a lion cut and they do such a great job and clean her up real nice. They even offered me to come back in a month for free once she started growing out to brush her out and keep her clean and pretty. She has another appointment tomorrow. They are fast and really nice. read more

I said yes and confidently left, expecting consistency with the previous groom. Unfortunately, that was not the case at all. They cut my dog's hair extremely low and completely ignored the previous grooming guidelines. When I expressed my concerns, the groomer responded by saying When I expressed my concerns, the groomer responded by saying she had "shaved his nails for free," which she said is normally a $10 add-on. I explained that it still didn't address the issue at hand and that it should have either been communicated or charged properly as an add-on if that was the case, because it didn't resolve my concern about the haircut. I was told there was "nothing they could do" and that "for future reference" I should bring a photo. I didn't think a photo was necessary for a repeat appointment when the staff made it seem like they already understood what was expected based on his last service. The manager called the next day, listened to everything that happened, and ultimately only reiterated that they do not offer refunds or discounts. No apology, no empathy, and no accountability for the poor experience. The only response I kept hearing was "for future reference." To make matters worse, my dog's ears were cut so short that he barely even looks like he has ears anymore. The haircut looks nothing like the previous groom, and it's honestly upsetting to look at. Since the appointment, he hasn't even seemed like his usual energetic self. I trusted this salon to care for him properly, and instead I left feeling dismissed and deeply disappointed. A total waste of $80 and a tip. PHOTOS BELOW: As you can see in the attached photos, his beautiful black coat was shaved down entirely too close, leaving his face and ears completely bare.

Who would think that dog grooming would be one such place but I consider CleanDog to be a treasure in Chicago. John brings a rare combination of pride or work and some kind of genius for dog grooming that is ineffable; he just has a feel and an incredible talent for working with dogs. What brought me in the door for our Maltipoo Bailey is that I was looking for someone who would not immediately resort to shears to deal with some matting (admittedly, we had let Bailey go and she was very matted). I know that taking her to our prior groomer would result in her coming home shivering and looking like a short-haired chihuahua. Reading the reviews here led us to CleanDog. In short, John did not disappoint. He is so kind and helpful and went the extra mile (and then another extra mile and then another after that). As others have experienced, we could not believe how wonderful she looked. In fact, it was the best she has ever looked, hands down. John patiently brushed her out, gave her a much needed bath, and then working his own unique magic, brought out the scissors and turned her into a show dog. I can't imagine taking her for grooming anywhere else in Chicago.

Everyone at Sandy's has made him feel so comfortable and have been very dedicated to his grooming appointments for the last few years. What we particularly like about this location is that they don't use crates when they're drying the dogs. Your dog has open play and Mason loves socializing with the other dogs while he's there. I dropped her off and was called 40minutes later stating that they were done but was unable to clip here finger nails because she was frightened. It was understandable. I picked her up and grabbed her in a rush due to me being on break for work. Once I got home, I realised that they actually cut her nails and lied because they hurt her. I noticed there was dried blood on her paws. I will not be returning and would not recommend their services. The workers could of been honest; I understand that mistakes happen but they should of owned up to it.

I'm literally near tears right now. This is worst dog grooming experience I've ever had. This groomer RUINED my dog. He likes a JUNK YARD ANIMAL. I am furious. The place itself looks like a shit show. Not clean, animals in cages and CASH ONLY... it's 2020, what sort of "reputable business" doesn't take credit/debit. And what they did to my animal is atrocious. His fur all over his body is uneven. His tail looks like a used dust mop and some spots are so short is almost BARE SKIN!! Did I mention the OWNER did it???!!! And the worst part about it, he was very riled up and spaz like when I picked him which leads me to believe that he wasn't treated very well while there. I have owned several several dogs over the years and I'll have took them to Happy Tails....The atmosphere is warm, humbling, loving and caring ,you can tell the staff really loves what he does and love animals.. the place have so much character and history it just feel authentic... every month is a super cool display in the window ...I've been to places in the area in felt discriminated against or is felt like a rush job... so when I found happytails is was refreshing my dog likes it they so happy when they comes back it's like you knows they took a bath, he starts to prance around the cutest... the service is great I've been going there for years my friends love it my dog's loves it it's just an overall refreshing experience not only that was even more refreshing to me is that the owners likes to give back to the community when I saw that that was the day I was like yeah this is a really cool place read more

Ray is the BEST! I have been going to him for over 7 years know with my Maltese. What I love about him or rather Happy Tail is that he does exactly what you want him to do. I have never had a bad experience with Happy Tails. My 5 pound Maltese is done always before the time he says. I have refer him too many of my friends and they all have been satisfied. My mom takes her two pets to Happy Tails and is very happy with his services. I know have a Golden Retriever and Sophia Loren loves going to Happy Tails. He always willing to give an advise and listen to your concerns. We wouldn't know what to do if Happy Tail fail to exist. Last but not least the greatest part of his Shop is the that you can see inside his work room there are closed doors and that I LOVE!!! Happy Tails continued the GREAT work! read more

We love Happy Tails and have been taking our dogs there for years. I was surprised at some of the reviews here, but I guess every groomer who's been in business this long occasionally has an unhappy customer (a dog is too matted and has to be shaved down but the owner doesn't like the way it looks, for example). If you want a frou frou groomer who will poof up your dog, go somewhere else, but if you want someone who cares about your pet and does a good job, go to Happy Tails. read more
