This was our first time here as previously, we rescued our Aussie from the Love Joy Foundation in Inglewood. Initial impressions were that the staff took immense pride in their job and that the animals were very well cared for. The neat and organized board of visuals of the the up-for-adoption pets (dogs / cats / critters) was a unique touch I had never seen at another shelter. As the person in the relationship who has never owned a cat, I felt as though I was at a huge disadvantage in both advocating on behalf of our Aussie but also facilitating a compatible future partner in crime. Given that we were understandably unable to facilitate a meet and greet with both pets, I am very appreiciative of Christine, who helped us as she was both incredibly kind and patient with me, taking the time to provide thoughtful answers to all the questions and concerns I had. it was very reassuring being able to lean into Christine.

Miniature schnauzers are a popular breed, so there's likely truth to this statement. My gripe pertains to the dogs from China presented over the last year. They even posted pictures with names, ages and bios. I submitted an application for the Northern California chapter in general, not specifically for the China dogs. I know they didn't make me a promise for one of the dogs from China. The delay in getting the dogs to the USA during the COVID pandemic was a challenge and probably involved factors beyond their control. I have a problem with advertising the dogs heavily on the site, then giving them to Aberdeen Scottish Terrier Rescue (ASTR) the state of Washington. Aberbeen does not allow adoption to people outside of Washington. This was the response I got when I emailed ASTR. I wish CMSR could have made an arrangement with ASTR to make an exception to this policy. Then the Northern California folks who already applied for dogs from CMSR could at least have a chance to get one of the dogs from China. The whole situation felt really unfair.

We arrived at 6pm when the event was supposed to start and person out front said they were still setting up and would be starting soon. They let us in the main area where the cats were a few minutes later but apparently they meant they were BARELY starting to set up. We had to awkwardly maneuver and wait around while they were getting tables and chairs set up and then we didn't get started til 645 which is pretty bad when your event is advertised as starting at 6. It was nice to walk around to see and pet the cats but that was not the primary point of the visit. What made this a pretty poor experience was the instructor and lack of organization. I've been to other paint events and you usually know what the inspo is ahead of time and the paint palette is provided with all the colors and right amounts you would need. They passed around the inspo pic and we had to wait while it was going around the room to take a picture and then we had to go up front to pick our own colors. The brushes were so overused and limp, floppy, and just in bad shape. The instructor said maybe 3 sentences to say she was going to outline the cat but there was no guidance whatsoever around how to shade, how to outline, how to do anything. It was not beginner friendly whatsoever and I think most of us were literally just winging it. The instructor also did not walk around the room or offer any assistance, feedback or help. I could tell some others were over painting and just got up to play with the cats. The concept is great but execution kind of failed. I'm sure they're not a trained paint instructor and maybe an employer or volunteer who likes to paint but that doesn't make for a good experience. We expected to have direction and instruction to paint. So essentially we paid $40 to be around cats and maybe $5-$10 worth of materials. Definitely would not recommend this event.

Rescuing animals is not for the faint of heart, and comes with a lot of dirt, heartache and possibility of illness. Fortunately, the people who run the group are willing to overlook all the obstacles and still help the poor creatures who desperately need them. I have helped them photograph dogs, worked adoption events, fostered dogs and am now fostering cats, and know that the good this organization does far outweighs any negatives. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who wants to volunteer, but this type of work requires a lot of strength and determination to help those who need it most. The joy of helping saving a life is the best feeling in the world.

I was "recruited" into the group after I witnessed a weekend glamour shot day while I was walking dogs at the Baldwin Park Shelter. Volunteering with UHA fulfills a part of me that had been unfulfilled since I had my first pet fish. I am surrounded by people who love animals as much as me, who don't mind having extended discussions concerning potty training, dog behavior, cuteness levels, and types of poop. I feel important, I feel accomplished, I feel like I have people to turn to if I'm having trouble. UHA's main concern is the individual, whether it's the animal or the person. It isn't about numbers, it isn't about politics. It's about finding the best home for one animal, the best fit for the owner. I couldn't imagine a more amazing, selfless, and helpful set of people and animal rescuers. They've made a difference in countless animals' lives, countless owners' lives, and definitely, in my own life. If you're looking to adopt a new fur baby, or just need some help or information, UHA is your rescue!

They are located within a small shopping plaza. It was quiet during our visit on a Sunday afternoon so there was ample parking. The shop is a decent size with a mixed variety of brands I'm familiar with and some I am not. They carry Nutri-source which I haven't been able to find anywhere else aside from a pet store in Redondo Beach. They also carry Against the Grain canned food which has one or two ingredients--perfect for our pup that has a sensitive stomach. The owner was welcoming and provided a lot of information. i want to preface this by saying i am a nervous wreck whenever i leave my dogs with anyone besides…read morefriends and family, so finding sitters / boarding we trust has been an ongoing struggle, especially for two dogs. my babies rosie and hank have been going here for the last few years, and we've really come to love and trust this place. hank is a super friendly goofball who always acclimates to groups easily, but rosie is a little nervous gal so she takes a bit to warm up to the group. sometimes i'll watch her on the doggy cam and she'll just be sitting in a corner watching everyone play. but after a few days, i've watched her get used to her new dog friends and even start playing! i don't think that would be possible without the owners and staff creating a caring and warm environment for them. also once i checked the cameras and i saw someone sitting on the floor while all the dogs piled onto them and it was the funniest / sweetest thing i've ever seen. a massive cuddle pile full of happy dogs with wagging tails. they won my trust completely after that. thank you for creating such a wonderful environment where both animals and their owners feel safe and cared for. it's a rarity in this world!

When he passed at a ripe old age after a long and happy life in my home, I did not have to think twice about where I would look for a new companion when I felt ready. It has now been many years again since the last adoption, and I know I would return again when the time comes. I see that there have been multiple news items slandering this business and Marina as a person, which I think is ridiculous. I have found her and her practices both completely fair and empathetic. She cares about and remembers these animals even after many years away from them, and has always gone above and beyond offering a hand (even offering boarding if needed for a vacation!) F the haters, if I may say so.
