I would like to start my review by saying that I have never owned a cat, a dog, a rabbit, an…read moreelephant:-) not even a fish. Unfortunately, I have never experienced the pleasure of owning some type of an animal. Thanks to mama Flora. She had always injected the fear in me. Not to get close, it will bite, attack, harass.. I have few friends that do own dogs and cats. One of my friends wanted to go check out this place and see if she could adopt a cat and replace the cat that she had that passed away 6 months ago. She couldn't wrap her head around the devastation of losing her cat Katy. With that being said, she asked me to go with her to this animal shelter and see if she could adopt a new cat. I agreed and went there like 2 weeks ago. There was this one cat that she instantly fell in love with, did all the paperwork with their staff, got all the information pertaining to the vaccines, immunizations, medications, & vet information. All the employees were caring, nice professional and helpful. The shelter was nice and clean. Established in 1903. They also do dog training, have pet supply store, animal control, workshops & kids programs. She had tears of joy in her eyes after adopting her new cat and named her after her late cat. For me, all this was new. Who knows, maybe one day I will adopt a cat and give it to my mama and she will get used to the animal.. hours of operation are 9:30am-5:30pm. Seven days a week. We parked outside and don't know if they have parking or not. The entire process was quick, fast, effortless, and seamless. Good luck to my friend & to her new cat!! Thank you staff at this adoption rescue center and Pasadena Humane!

I can't even begin to express how callous and uncompassionate our experience with the person at the…read moreentrance to the Animal Resource Center was. Ironically one of the most inhumane experiences we have ever had. When someone carries in a completely limp and unresponsive dog, desperately asking for help, it is WAY the wrong response to act annoyed and try to get rid of them without any assistance. My Labrador just collapsed, lost all bodily autonomy, soiled herself and had gone completely white. I ran down the street carrying her to the nearest place that I thought could help, which was the Pasadena Humane Society. The 2 young ladies at the Shelter Shop directed me to the Animal Resource Center. I'm sweating bullets and my body is giving out from carrying my poor limp dog a considerable distance, when I finally arrive at the Animal Resource Center. I ask the girl at the entrance for help and she just tells me that they don't treat pets and I need to take my dog somewhere else. I frantically ask where and she gets visibly annoyed at me when she can't provide more information. Eventually a young man comes out and explains that I would need to surrender my dog in order to have them treat her, at which point she becomes the Humane Society's property and I have no claim or access to her condition or whereabouts. He tells me that Access is the nearest emergency pet hospital that can treat her. At that point a woman (possibly a vet) steps in and directs us to VCA on Arroyo Parkway because it seems like my dog may not survive the trip to Access. She was empathetic and wished us luck as we headed off. While I am thankful for those who eventually stepped in and offered helpful advice, I am still in shock at the callous and annoyed initial response I got from the girl at the Animal Resource Center entrance, in that desperate moment as I held my lifeless baby in my arms. I don't care how bad your day was or how much you don't care about your job, you do not get annoyed with someone who is desperately clutching their lifeless baby's body right in front of you. I get it, Pasadena Humane is a non-profit and not a free veterinary hospital. I also understand that many of the staff are not paid enough to care or they may very well be volunteers. But please do a better job of training your people, especially if they are the first point of contact with the public. Give them a list of alternative facilities or instruct them to reach out to someone who can and wants to help, it could mean the difference between life and death.

People who complain that they are not easy to deal with are folks who do not understand the adoption process is as important and should be as strict as when adopting a human baby. The DeGeneres case was blown out of proportion, Ellen did not follow the rules and transferred the pet to another person, just like a piece of property, and clearly in breach of contract. Animals are not a piece of property, they are living beings who deserve the utmost consideration and protection. Mutts and Moms does that. IF you want to adopt and think they are hard to deal with, be glad. They are doing their job. I only wish all rescues were as thorough as Mutts and Moms. Here is a great article that summarizes the Ellen case and outlines the legal rights of transferred animals and how they should be classified as "Adoptions" http://www.animalsheltering.org/resources/magazine/mar_apr_2011/law_forum_avoiding_adopter_roulette.pdf

The adoption process is thorough enough, but not super lengthy like a lot of other rescues. There is no home inspection, but they do ask a series of questions, and as long as they all meet the qualifications of a suitable pet owner, then an appointment is set for a visit at the facility, and if you're ready right then and there, you just need to fill out a few things, pay, and head home with your new pet! As we just did today:D

After completing the questionnaire, we were invited to the open house. Furbaby is located on the second floor of the "blue house," right next to Westside German Shepherd Rescue. The staff were very thorough in answering our questions about the dogs we were interested in. I was pleasantly surprised by how clean the facility is, it didn't smell like dogs at all, and there wasn't a lot of barking. It's clear they genuinely take great care of their animals. The only slightly awkward part was that other families might be interested in the same dog. In our case, another family came after us, and it was obvious that the dog was a better match for them. It was a good dog, just not "our" dog, but that's part of the process! Overall, Furbaby is professional, caring, and well-run, I'd definitely recommend checking them out if you're looking to adopt.

She sent me to the back-most desk (I believe it's labeled Receiving) to ask for more information. There, I spoke to a young man there who suggested I bring the cat in. He let me know she'd be spayed and released. I spoke to the elderly woman at the front again to ask if there were any options to get this cat spayed and put up for adoption. She acknowledged it was a good question, and advised me to go back to the Receiving desk, have a conversation with them, and see if there were any options. I went back to receiving as the elder suggested, but unfortunately I was met by a rude middle aged women who certainly did not want to have a conversation. She asked if I had a question, I said yes and reiterated the situation with the cat. She then condescendingly asked, "Didn't you just speak to another employee?" I confirmed, and just asked if there were other options besides spaying and releasing the cat (as the elder had advised me to do). She was incredibly condescending! She absolutely spoke down to me, as if I did not understand that cats *can* be free roaming. That's common knowledge - but in this neighborhood we have tons of coyotes. I've see so many stray cats go missing overnight only to find furry coyote poop along the street soon after. Disgusting behavior from a person working where literal animal's lives at stake. These employees, particularly this middle aged woman, need to be kinder. No one comes here trying to be a problem, we're here because we care about animals. It was close to 5 pm at this point, so I'm not sure if she was being rude because she wanted to head out for the day - but even that is no excuse. I hope she can recall her grade school lessons from many, many, many years ago and listen more actively, and speak more kindly.

We said okay and continued looking around. After a bit, I went to the front desk to ask if we could meet one of the cats, Clawdina. A white female staff member with a bun told us she'd be right with us. We waited for quite a while and no one came, so we went back to the cat room and waited some more. At one point, my son and I were standing nearby while she was speaking with another guest. We didn't want to interrupt or seem rude, so we continued waiting, but we were never acknowledged again. Eventually, we just left. It was honestly really disappointing because this was our first time visiting and we were genuinely excited to meet Clawdina and potentially adopt her. We know black cats can have a harder time getting adopted, which made the experience even sadder for us. I completely understand being busy, especially working in customer service myself, but being ignored for that long without any communication felt unprofessional and unwelcoming. A simple acknowledgment or update would have gone a long way. Unfortunately, because of this experience, we don't plan on coming back.
