This is such a special place and I appreciate how there is a safe haven for kitties! My friend and I had a great afternoon playing with the cats. You can easily tell that the staff/volunteers take such good care of the cats and are closely attuned to each one's unique personalities. You can drop in when they're open and after putting on some hand sanitizer, you're given a brief orientation of the protocols. If you want to play with the kittens, note that you can only pick one. There are three sections where there are kittens and a bunch of adult cats frolicking around. You can adopt if you're interested or simply come for some kitty therapy. It's free to enter and there's metered parking available. read more

What an inviting cat rescue! Super clean, and welcoming. The volunteers are super nice too! You can tell these cats are loved and well take care of. We went in to check it out and pet some cats. Although I was hopeful, there weren't any kittens, and some were permanent residents for the last many years. But all were so cute, some were playful, some were sleeping, some just checking the people out. I think they are mostly all up for fostering or adoption. We will go back for some kitty love and a blood pressure reduction again at some point. Definitely check out their website. & I recommend giving this place a try. read more

This rescue/sanctuary is such a special place in LA. When I took in a friendly stray but couldn't find him a home, I was stuck in such a bind. The homeless cat situation is untenable in our city so I just expected to be shut down at every rescue I reached out to. But much to my surprise, Santé D'Or opened their sanctuary up to him and offered to take him in! Leslie was so kind and offered as many updates as one could on how he was doing. In the time I've gotten to know their rescue more by volunteering there, I see how attune they are with each cats needs and how every decision they make is in the best interest of each kitty. I did not even get a chance to visit the place because I was immediately rejected after submitting my application which took a while to complete online. What did I do wrong? I put in my application that I would give the cat the option to be an indoor/outdoor cat. I would prefer an indoor cat but I put indoor/outdoor just in case. My husband and I are both teachers and have experience being cat owners. We are a cat family with no dogs. Our oldest cat who my son loved passed away in May and we wanted to add to another kitten to our family but that will not be happening with this organization. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME FILLING OUT THEIR APPLICATION I have wasted three hours of my life on this awful organization now. My two bonus-children ages 14 and 12 went to go visit the cats last Sunday and fell in love with one in particular. We were loving on him, he was snuggling both kids. My son is Autistic and normally quite frightened of animals and even he immediately fell in love with this cat. I spent a good ten to fifteen minutes speaking with a volunteer about the cat and full transparency she did tell me that he is known to scratch or bite when under/over stimulated but not ONCE did anyone mention to us in person that this cat could potentially be dangerous for children. I told the volunteer that we would be going home and applying for this specific cat and she told us how excited she was for us. Not once did she warn us to not even bother applying because we have "children." Again, my "children" are 14 and 12. I don't know anyone who considers their teenager and preteen a "child." So imagine our surprise when we received a three sentence email from Sante D'Or that says: "Thank you for your interest in El Chavito and adopting from Sante D'Or. Ele Chavito would do best in a home without children. He can be incredibly loving, but can also get overstimulated and react by scratching or biting. Thank you for your understanding. Morgan." They did not even give us a chance to do a trial period. Then when I sent a follow up email with pictures and videos from when we met the cat, they had the audacity to send me cut and paste email saga about how "Our priority as an adoption organization is to match our animals to the home they would do best in." Well....to me it seems like your priority is to steal donations and gatekeep as many cats as possible. Save your sanity, go to the Burbank Shelter. read more

This review is long time over do! A year ago, I found a friendly, homeless cat during the COVID lock down. I called several no kill shelters that ask me to pay $$$ to take the cat since "black and white cats" are less popular. I would have paid, but I wanted to be sure it was the right place for this homeless kitty. I am glad that I found Santé D Or, these ladies care for there cats deeply as if they were human beings that needed help and love. They took the cat and said, "he will be adopted quickly" and she didn't charge me money to have the cat taken care of. The woman in charge knows all the cats names, personalities, and their life styles. These cats look happy and have friendly volunteers to help them out everyday. Great cat rescue organization. They give students in high school the opportunity to volunteer there and learn about working and taking care of animals. The owners of managers are very nice and take the time to teach the students and earn volunteering hours. The people really care about the cats And take great care of them. They let the cats run around and get plenty of time outside the kennels and have the cats well trained so they don't have to worry about keeping them locked up all the time. We decided it was time to get a new cat. Our older cats had passed some time ago and we were ready to do it all over again. There is some street parking nearby, but not a lot so you may have to walk a little during peak hours. We did not run into any issues but we visited during off peak hours. They have a large amount of cats and just as important, they have a large variety of cats. There were cats of all ages and personalities. We spent time getting to know several of them. After a while we settle on a pair of kittens. We did all the paperwork right then and there. A week later they came to check out our apartment and a few days later we picked up the kittens for good. I visited once to just come in and pet some wonderful cats, and that was really fun and lovely - all the workers/and volunteers were really nice and helpful and let us have some fun. About a month ago, right before quarantine started, my partner and I started working from home and decided this would be the perfect time to get a cat. The process was incredibly thorough and they clearly care so much about their cats and want them to go to a good home. We went to visit and were introduced to a couple who would fit our usual lifestyle - we settled on a senior kitty (Jodie!!!!!!) who had some digestive issues. We asked a ton of questions about her and her health, and they were completely open and honest about any potential difficulties and expenses we would have to face. We brought Jodie home and we were provided with her prescribed vet diet, some cat toys, and all of her previous health records. Our first week was really tough, and Leslie (who showed us Jodie) was kind enough to let me pester her endlessly with questions through text to make sure Jodie was healthy and happy. From the looks of this shelter they care a lot about their cats which drew us to them immediately. However after numerous attempts to reach out to them our emails (their preferred contact atm according to their voicemail) were left for weeks. And after putting in our interest for a cat that had been up for adoption for months we were immediately turned down in response to our email. No interview, no chance to meet the cat, and even more concerning, not even a single attempt to match us with another cat they may have seen as a better fit. I understand wanting to place an animal in the best possible home, but the one sentence response we received was about needing to have the cat adopted with a companion. That same cat was recently adopted, seemingly on their own, MONTHS later. Again if we weren't the match that's fine but it's so disappointing to see that they didn't care enough to try and find another cat a new home. read more

I'd driven by the shelter a couple of times and thought it was a maybe a fancy pet hotel thanks to the adore benches outside - but when it came time for my friend to adopt her first cat I knew I had to do some research to find her a place that would be welcoming, fun and allow her to socialize with the cats outside of cages. When I found Santé D'or I knew I had found the perfect place. And sure enough it has been. The staff and Volunteers are so helpful and kind - each one of them so good at knowing when to talk and offer help and when to take a step back off and let you socialize with the cats. They are so good at helping match you up with cats that fit each persons lifestyle and personality. I also really love how all the cat huts are marked letting visitors know if the cats want to interact or not - or my favorite when a cat is in timeout. When you say "up to date with shots", everywhere else I've ever been, that includes rabies. Of course he's in indoor cat - there should be NO SUCH THING as an "outdoor" cat. But is it worth it? Is it worth it for a rabid rodent to worm it's way inside the home and cause harm to my pets? Is it a low chance? Of course it is! But I don't gamble when it comes to animals under MY care. The American Veterinary Medical Association, the largest and most comprehensive non-profit group of American Veterinarians says: "Rabies Virus Vaccine: Rabies is an increasing threat to cats. At the present time, the number of reported feline rabies cases in the United States far exceeds that of all other domestic animals. Rabies in cats is also a major public health concern. Because of the routinely fatal outcome of infection in cats, and the potential for human exposure, rabies vaccination is highly recommended for all cats; it is required by law in most areas of the country" Oh and a little group you might have heard of, oh I dunno, they're not really a big deal or anything, just the CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL: http://www.cdc.gov/features/dsrabies/ Oh yeah! Cats don't get rabies! Oh, ok. I believe you over 82,500 veterinarians and the CDC. So what you've done, essentially, is let me take home a potential disease vector without any warning whatsoever. When I drove to your shelter to see Rigby, I warned well ahead of time that I lived in Lancaster and it would be a hardship to do a home visit. The other employees assured me that it was no problem and that they've done home visits as far away as San Francisco. As far as my "Yelp cred" goes, the majority of my reviews are positive and half are 5-star. I don't think it's a "silly" standard to expect a pet to receive a "10 to 20 dollar vaccine" that could save their life and the lives of every animal around them. And Kelly, I think it's YOU that doesn't understand what slander is. First of all, this is all written, so it would be libel. Second, to be libel, you'd have to show that what I said was untrue. Have I lied? Do you give your cats rabies vaccines in accordance with the AVMA and CDC recommendations? And the vast majority of state laws, with the unfortunate exception of California? Since, as you can tell, California has the second highest incidence of rabies infection west of the Mississippi. I'm sorry. I really am. But people should KNOW, up front, that your cats are not vaccinated against rabies. Sante D'Or is so incredibly close to my heart and from the MOMENT I learned about them and first heard back from them after sending an email, they were BEYOND amazing. I initially met the incredible animal lovers of Sante D'Or as a foster parent, and I was in an urgent kitten situation they helped me with. I began to volunteer and foster for the rescue on a weekly basis, and have spent the last year immersed in the Sante D'Or world. Many rescues are often different from the outside than from the inside, but Sante D'Or is JUST as inspiring and amazing from the inside as on the beautiful outside. In the past year there were beautiful moments, happy moments, a few heartbreaking moments, but overall, SO many hopeful and precious moments. I met SO many incredible kitties AND humans! I could write an entire volume on how fantastic Christy is, and would STILL fall short of showing how dedicated and loving she is to kitties! The open space environment is so full of love and care for all the kitties. Each kitty becomes their own character, and all the volunteers learn to know the kitties by name. Volunteering with the rescue is SO rewarding, and they are always in need of fantastic volunteers AND foster parents. The adoption process is fantastic, and having seen it from beginning to end, I have never seen a more supportive and healthy adoption process. The rescue is there for adoptees from day one, and their goal of finding the best home for every kitty is very evident by the care that goes into considering each adopter. Another thing worth mentioning is that Sante D'Or is also TRULY no-kill. Some rescues claim to be no-kill but secretly ship off hard to adopt cats to kill shelters, but Sante D'Or loves and cares for EACH cat that comes into their care, even if the kitty has special needs, or is a challenging personality. We got our second kitty from here, and I'm such a fan! All the ladies we encountered were super sweet and genuinely care about all the cats, it really shows. We picked out an adorable 7 month old kitten. It was relatively easy, but you have to schedule a home visit so they can make sure you're a legit happy home for their animals. I felt pangs of impatience as I waited for them to inspect our apartment. But it was all good and we got our new baby the next day. $155 adoption fee includes neuter/spay, microchip, and ensures the cats are in good health. I was happy to pay this-- In comparison, we got our first cat from the pound and she was super ill and needed the vet. So glad Sante D'Or takes such good care of the kitties. I can't say enough good things about this place and the people here. After losing our previous beloved cat to cancer last year, we went to a number of shelters/rescues looking for a new cat to cuddle. At most of the shelters and rescues, the people there knew next to nothing about the cats, or you couldn't properly meet the cats, etc. etc. When we finally walked into Sante D'Or, it was a totally different story: Christy knows each cat like a friend, she's honest about them and not pushy, and she wants nothing more than to find exactly the right cat for you. She was incredibly patient with us - and it took us several months and several visits to find the right cat. The whole time she assured us that we WOULD find the right cat, and it would be worth the wait. And she was right! We eventually found"Shmush Cat" - who crawled into our laps and purred nonstop as soon as we met her. We've had her with us for a month now, and she's become our best couch buddy. Yes, the adoption fee here is more expensive than most shelters, but it's worth it, because you'll know the personality of the cat you're getting, and that cat will be well-socialized, taken care of, and happy and healthy. I am grieving the loss of my cat. I had a bunch of her food, beds, toys, etc. remaining after she passed so I decided to donate it to Sante D'or. Now I've never gotten a good vibe from this place and today was the last straw. They want you to leave the donations on the shelf in the back. Okay, fine. I ask the volunteer inside if I can drive my car around back. To unload mind you, because I had THAT much stuff. She's like "No. People will be coming in and out back here." This turned out to be a bold-faced lie come to find out since I was there for at least 10 minutes. So I walk back to my car, load up my donation into a small shopping cart and then wheel it back around. As I'm unloading, another woman exited the building and gave me a look that all black people recognize instantly. "Oh, she sees my shopping cart and thinks that I'm back here stealing." But at least, she keeps it moving and then I remember why I don't like this place. It's cliquish and unwelcoming. Then I see the first volunteer through the window. She's inside sitting on her well-cushioned ass. She never asked if maybe I needed any help unloading or even cared what I was dropping off. Are there some items that they'd rather not have? Beats me since none of these women cared to say more than five words to me. In the middle of unloading, I changed my mind. I'm not giving them all this stuff. The energy here is trash. I dropped off a little bit of canned food (expensive prescription brands) and a couple toys and left. I'll donate the remaining stuff to a shelter with a better vibe and attitude.
