Pretzel - Adopted in 2018 from Helping Persian Cats
    Johnny H.

I recommend this organization. I love our cat. One of the best things to happen to us in a long time with the most grateful and loving animal I have ever experienced. ---- I found myself reading the reviews last night and wanted to clear something up to help explain these negative reviews. 1. This is not a business. It is a rescue. The people have lives outside of VOLUNTEERING to help save animals. If you want prompt service or expect 4* accommodations perhaps you should go somewhere else. 2. People complaining about the cost ($250 lol). There are cats that have been fostered for OVER A YEAR in some cases and have had medical treatment... People are whining that they are trying to "bid" out the cats.. Well hell ya! Do you know how much cat food and care costs? This ridiculous notion that they are trying to profit is embarrassing to read. Not to mention More Money = More rescues. 3. Filling out an application. Bottom line.. some people don't have what it takes to get a cat. They have the option to choose whoever they want and you are not entitled to anything. We got scrutinized heavily and I understood why when the foster cat mom cried when we took our adopted cat away. They love these cats and want the best for them. That's right moron below, if you cannot even pay your bills you should learn to take care of yourself before you attempt to adopt an animal. 4. The cat has other conditions - This isn't a breeder or a pet store. It is HELPING PERSIAN CATS. Who knows where these cats were saved from. They are doing the best that they can to keep them happy and healthy and even offer to pay additional costs that come up, take the cat back if your situation changes, and come help you find the cat if it gets lost. We got some bad teeth removed from our Pretzel and it cost $1K. We took him to the vet 3x at another $600. You know what, that is what we signed up for. To HELP A PERSIAN CAT. I am obviously agitated that this wonderful organization has been given bad reviews by crybabies that have no understanding of how things work. Understand --- These are ordinary people doing an extraordinary service.

Moo, adopted from HPC in November 2016.

I was thrilled with my experience with Helping Persian Cats from beginning to end. When I spotted a kitty on their website that I knew was destined to be my feline companion, they were immediately responsive to my initial email inquiry, then reviewed my application right away and checked my references. I live in Northern California, exactly 6.5 hours from their regular adoption events in Santa Monica, and I made the drive on a Saturday in November 2016 to adopt my Moo. She was spayed, fully vaccinated and absolutely immaculate, and is without question the most loving and adorable cat I've ever been lucky enough to share my life with. The entire process, from my initial email to bringing Moo home, took less than two weeks. Highly recommend this volunteer-run, super-compassionate rescue organization.

This "rescue" is not interested in finding their cats homes. Very disappointing experience.

This "rescue" seems to have no interest in actually finding homes for their cats. I attended the adoption event and was told I had "a great application" but have been constantly ignored since then. It has been two weeks, I have sent 7 follow up emails, my boyfriend has sent 3 follow up emails, and I have sent two Facebook messages. I have only received two responses, that say they are busy with their jobs. I understand being busy. I also have a full time job AND am a full time student at university AND amazingly still find the time to reply to emails. It's a bit ridiculous. However, while they are apparently too busy to adopt cats out to loving homes, they seem to have all the time in the world to go out of their way acquiring new cats to sell. My boyfriend and I saw a Persian cat listed on craigslist for sale and it ended up in their rescue the very next day! She is listed on their website and Facebook as Minnie, for anyone interested. I am so disappointed in this experience. If you want to adopt a cat, I would recommend literally any other local shelter.

First, We live in San Diego and have adopted 3 Persians from the Rescue over the span of 9 years. We had made the drive and eventually left for home after a minimum of 3-5 hours of communicating/familiarizing with ALL of the persians available, before we and our new family member selected eachother and the Rescue group was satisfied with (the interview &) OUR FAMILY dynamic as well, overall. ...understand the amount of care and compassion and recognize the dedication given to every potential adoptee....get it yet?

I only have positive things to say about this organization and the volunteers who dedicate their time to fostering and finding homes for cats. I adopted my Gidget from Helping Persian Cats a few years ago and couldn't be happier with both her and the organization. The volunteers at HPC are understandably thorough with the application process. Persian cats require a significant degree of care and can face unique health issues related to the breed. (I adopted my first cat, Lulu, from a breeder and she passed away at age 4 from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy). The time and dedication these volunteers put into this organization is therefore commendable. Given the high degree of interest in Persian and Exotic shorthair cats, I hope applicants do not give up on adopting if an application with HPC is not immediately successful. Try again through this organization or search cats at local shelters. One final commendation: HPC foster mom Miriam was excellent and took the time to answer all my questions and concerns. She provided considerable details about Gidget's personality to ensure that I would provide a safe environment for this curious little girl. I continue to remain in touch with her and provide her with regular updates about Gidget. Ultimately, I cannot say enough good things about this organization and the valuable work they provide to all the feline friends they foster. (They often foster non-Persian and Exotic shorthair cats as well!) I hope to add another member to my family in the future-if Gidget allows!

It's an extension of the PD so their campus isn't huge, and they have one building of dogs and a room (plus a quarantine room) for cats. They're half police and half animal control essentially so they have to respond to field calls as well as keep up the facility. For all that work they still have welcoming attitudes. That's one of the biggest complaints I hear working at the shelter is no one cares and staff is unsympathetic. Not so here. Not when I came on a Saturday eve anyway. As I said it's a small spot for a small city. Santa Monica has better government than LA, not in small part due to the land area they cover, quantity wise and demographic wise. My biggest gripe about LA is it's too big which is why gov is so inefficient. It needs to be broken up into more smaller cities. Right now we just have SaMo, culver city, and WeHo with proper municipal status basically. This whole city is like 10 more cities to me. But I digress. Good shelter, as good as one can be given how low a priority it is at city hall.

But despite this and the recent negative reviews, I went anyway. There needs to be more oversight with this particular facility. The people there clearly do not know what they're doing, are very unprofessional, unorganized, and rude. I adopted a kitten who was still quite sick, despite being reassured several times that she had recovered. They adopted me out a cat was too small to get spayed, and did not have her first round of shots. I have had to make several appointments with them, missing work in the progress, all because of their lack of organization, communication, and professionalism. It's tough writing a review like this because I understand that it might affect other people visiting this humane shelter and adopting out beautiful animals that deserve a home, so I hope this reaches someone in charge and they rethink who is running this facility.

We are a family of color. I pay close attention to tone, body language, and how staff choose to speak to us. The difference was obvious the moment we arrived. We came to look at cats. Before we were allowed to even view the cages, an older woman with a Russian accent immediately began firing off intrusive qualifying questions. The final one was, "Well are you even ready to adopt now?" I chuckled and replied that it all depended on how the visit went. She followed up by counting our children out loud. "Well I see you got one, two, three kids." I explained politely that not all of them were ours (I am the headmaster of a school serving autistic children). She responded by clapping me on the back twice without permission and saying, "I see you already got enough." This is often used to 'shame' people of color. At age 50, I only have two children of my own and the income to support them; I think perhaps I should get parenting advice from a more qualified source. Do not touch people without consent. Do not talk down to them. Do not try to establish superiority through sarcasm or volume. I walked away while this gross weirdo continued prattling on. We stayed close to an hour. No one asked if we wanted to meet any animals. No one offered information. No one showed interest in helping us adopt. When my wife asked a male staff member about the likely size of a litter of very young puppies, his response was irritation and "I have no idea." Size matters when adopting a dog. Acting annoyed by a basic question reflects poorly on the staff and on the organization. This shelter looks good on the surface, however the staff needs to understand that their behavior makes them look like buffoons and makes the organization that employs them look tacky. The treatment we received did not match the mission they advertised. Clean facility. Unacceptable conduct. We'll stick to our regular shelter.
