"Bodhi" and "Kirra" at my home one day after "Bodhi" was adopted :)
    Kumiko S.

I think the Bill Foundation is great. It is run professionally and efficiently. Their goal is to place animals in the most stable and well-matched environment for the pet. This isn't a county shelter, you can't just walk in, pay a fee and go home with a dog on the same day. They look at the potential adopters' lifestyle, energy level, stability, and pet ownership history. This way they determine which applicant is best suited to adopt an animal. If you take a moment to think about it, they don't want the animals to go to people they don't feel confident with. Bill Foundation volunteers probably spend weeks and months rehabilitating sick, injured and abandoned animals. It takes a LOT of work to get these animals well enough for adoption! Of course they're going to be picky about who adopts them. I've only adopted pets from city and county shelters, so adopting through a rescue is very different. I think saving animals directly from the shelter is wonderful! But it's more of a risk because the shelter staff can't tell you much about the animal's medical and behavioral history. Rescues know the animals much better. My boyfriend and I were interested in one of Bill Foundation's dogs, so we filled out the monster application (it's like applying for college!). We didn't really expect much, but I heard back from Michele in just 3 days. We went to the Healthy Spot to meet the doggy and meet his wonderful foster mom. Just a few days and a home check later, they approved us to adopt "Bodhi"! I was really surprised. We're just a youngish couple living in an apartment in Culver City. I thought for sure they'd pick some fancy older people with a huge house in Beverly Hills over us! I wouldn't blame them if they did, the dog should go to whomever is able to provide the best life for a pet. As for the dog himself, he's a great dog. He is nice to people and other dogs. He's a pomeranian, and we've never had a small dog. Only goldens, huskies and malamutes. So we are learning about the weird quirks of having a little dog. Like being careful to not step on or squish them! We're still working on basic commands, and training him not to jump on people or bark at them. He's extremely affectionate, which I love! He sits in my lap and cuddles in bed. He is also getting along well with my senior husky (she is so patient with him, such a perfect dog). The best thing is that "Bodhi" is a young and healthy dog, just needs a good teeth cleaning. I'm happy that we'll have him for many years! Thanks Bill Foundation! (And special thanks to "Bodhi"'s foster mom, you rock :))

Bentley my gift from the Bill Foundation.

I love this rescue and think they are impeccable. I adopted two dogs from them and they couldn't have been , more caring or more thorough.

My second experience was terrible. After my puppy was killed while with me on leash by a reckless driver, I later returned to L&L to look for a new baby. Different set of employees, and both my nephew and I were shocked that one of them seemed to blame me for my puppy being killed. He was rude, insensitive to the circumstance, and he did all he could to throw up roadblocks to helping me. He was an expressionless jerk who had zero empathy or professionalism. I contacted the manager about this, and though she three times promised to call me back, she never did. This is heartless behavior for a place that is supposed to be doing good. I will never go back to that place again. The only reason this is not a 1-star review is because my first experience with them was good. That appears to have been an anomaly. We went and met Nes and Duke along with the trainer OJ. My wife and I were able to control and walk Duke with no problem. But they wouldn't allow me to adopt him because they say that my back yard has no shade, and that the gate is not secure enough. Actually the back yard has shade for about 1/2 the day once the sun if to the east, but the home inspector came by at 10:00 AM, so not much shade then. However, Duke would primarily be an indoor dog, and less than a block away is a park with all the grass and shade a dog could want. The back yard would be only for a potty area, and leg stretching area between walks. I have had my son in laws 3 Husky dogs back there and not once have they opened the gate, or broken through it, and they outweigh duke by about 2 to 1. Was I given a chance to address their concerns? Nope. That is why I am giving them 2 stars. If they have concerns, Let me address them, or at least call me and ask me about them, and then they can decide if we would be a suitable dog parents or not. Personally, I don't think that they took to my wife and me, and were looking for any reason not to let us adopt duke. (this is only my belief, and I have no proof one way or another.) And one more thing that I wasn't a fan of. The training. The trainer wants complete obedience from the dog. He thought that I was giving Duke too much affection for not doing anything. Who does that? If you love your dog, you give him affection for no other reason than he is a dog, and you want to make him feel loved. We don't just parcel out affection for only the times they do a behavior that we want from them. Overall, I am soured on rescues in general, and I will be only looking at animal shelters from this point forward. Good luck to anyone adopting from this rescue, but be prepared that they will say no without giving you a chance to explain or fix any issues.

The dog used to belong to a homeless man who died on the streets and the police brought him to the shelter. The Diana Gray Foundation was rehabilitating this boy spending a five digit amount for his medical needs in less than six months. Evander is today a happy boy, getting his weekly Physical Therapy and acupuncture, his home cooked meals, daily homeopathy and Chinese medicine to treat his many issues that have caused this boy a great deal of distress for years on the streets as a homeless dog. Since it was love at first sight, the foundation decided to keep the boy for life and to care for him like nobody else could. Treating his body, mind and soul. This is a truly amazing rescue. They believe deep down in the core of every rescue mission there is one goal in mind: rehabilitating the dog with everything Mother Earth has to offer. No other rescue is working with this principle and no other rescue was willing to put the time, effort and money into little Evander, who had zero hope in the world to be left to live and get well again. I called the Vet, Quality Animal Clinic, Catherine Harrison, DVM and spoke with Suzette. She said they had no such emergency and were expeting "Frankie". They picked him up at 7AM on the 29th and took him to the Vet. I had to pick him up and was surprised to find out the Vet said he was 2 years old!! I later found out he had been returned to Gia. On the adoption form I filled out before doing any business with her, it said the charge was $500.00. On his adoption papers it said the price was $550.00 The adoption paper also said he was born on 4/1/2022 which she had written in and signed. I told her how upset I was with her and she offered to take him back but not give me my money. I will begin with the positive: This is one of the cleanest shelters I have visited. As my review…read morehistory suggests, I rarely leave negative reviews, and only do so when the conduct is indefensible. Our experience matched the dozens of other negative reviews perfectly. We are a family of color. I pay close attention to tone, body language, and how staff choose to speak to us. The difference was obvious the moment we arrived. We came to look at cats. Before we were allowed to even view the cages, an older woman with a Russian accent immediately began firing off intrusive qualifying questions. The final one was, "Well are you even ready to adopt now?" I chuckled and replied that it all depended on how the visit went. She followed up by counting our children out loud. "Well I see you got one, two, three kids." I explained politely that not all of them were ours (I am the headmaster of a school serving autistic children). She responded by clapping me on the back twice without permission and saying, "I see you already got enough." This is often used to 'shame' people of color. At age 50, I only have two children of my own and the income to support them; I think perhaps I should get parenting advice from a more qualified source. Do not touch people without consent. Do not talk down to them. Do not try to establish superiority through sarcasm or volume. I walked away while this gross weirdo continued prattling on. We stayed close to an hour. No one asked if we wanted to meet any animals. No one offered information. No one showed interest in helping us adopt. When my wife asked a male staff member about the likely size of a litter of very young puppies, his response was irritation and "I have no idea." Size matters when adopting a dog. Acting annoyed by a basic question reflects poorly on the staff and on the organization. This shelter looks good on the surface, however the staff needs to understand that their behavior makes them look like buffoons and makes the organization that employs them look tacky. The treatment we received did not match the mission they advertised. Clean facility. Unacceptable conduct. We'll stick to our regular shelter.

From the moment I walked in, I was warmly welcomed by the kind and knowledgeable staff who took the time to thoughtfully explain the fostering and adoption process. The one staff member even gave us a mini tour to see their dog Simba who was the only one available for fostering at the moment. All the others were only available for adoption. Unfortunately, since I am only looking for small to small-medium sized dogs there wasn't a match for me yet. But it was so great to see the row of dogs held in this warmly heated section of the center who all had mini lifted cot like beds to rest on instead of having to lay on the cold floor. The facility was so clean, well-maintained, and heated, providing a comfortable environment for the animals, who were kept safe and warm inside this wonderful non-profit, no-kill center. The kitties are displayed right by the entrance so that your heart can view and connect with animals as soon as you walk inside their facility. I learned so much during my visit and felt inspired by the care and dedication of everyone involved. During my visit, they didn't have any small to small-medium sized dogs that I hoped for but I hope to go back frequently to check on their on going availability for incoming dogs to come. Crossing fingers. Overall, it was a splendid experience, and I'm excited to return soon with the hope of finding the perfect dog to adopt.
