Friends of Project 10

"Friends of Project 10, Incorporated is a nonprofit organization created in 1984 that supports…read moreprograms which emphasize nondiscrimination & equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Youth. The organization works to assure that public schools are in compliance with state & federal laws regarding sexual orientation& gender identity, and that academic achevement should not be limited by being part of a marginalized social group. Our major program is the "Models of Excellence" scholarship competition for Southern California senior high school students who have advanced LGBT rights." Just as our wise founding forefathers developed checks & balances in the Federal government, society also needs various organizations to monitor public policy to ensure that the rules & laws governing equality under the law is implemented fairly & consistently. Good laws can be formulated by governing agencies, but officials in charge may not always comply & sometimes may be counter-productive & damaging. Project 10 is thus such a counter-balance so that there is compliance & execution of policy that brings a measure of equality & rights to LGBT students . I recently went to a Friends of Project 10 fund raiser at the home of Virginia & Gail, the organizers. It was an eclectic gathering of people of many orientations who were primarily interested in furthering opportunities of leadership & scholarship for LGBT youth. No matter of what stripe, it is our youth who will be the movers & shakers in our future society. It is imperative that we encourage & support their education & initiative so that they will be able to handle & manage the problems in our future society. Without youth being prepared for the eventuality of taking over, our American society will be in a dire position of decline. It is up to us as adults to facilitate support & help this transition. The backyard fund raiser was a good way to interact & network with people from diverse backgrounds & cultures as well as meeting many people (straight & LGBT) representing different organizations that function as the checks & balances needed in a free society. One of the more specialized organizations is the San Gabriel Valley Asian Pacific Islander PFLAG. Its amazing how our internet oriented nation is so full of special interest groups that appeal to such a wide range of needs. Wish they could house people...but unhoused can get a hot meal there and a bag sandwich lunch they said. There is a program so those who qualify can get a free phone and data plan. Dedicated staff. Since we made about 90 kits, she figured it would be best for us to deliver them to an organization that assists those in need, and she found Foothill Unity Center. Foothill Unity Center is a multi-service agency that provides services to individuals and families in need. Founded in 1980 by Josephine Anderson, the center has become a source for food, health services, and crisis assistance to thousands of low-income families in the SGV. The place is clean and spacious and the staff were friendly and gracious for our donation. It felt nice to do something good for others and give back to the community. The security guard on duty was an absolute doll - polite, friendly, and respectful. He made our day as much as we made his. They accept donations of any kind and you can drop off during business hours 8 am - 4:30 pm Mon - Fri. Almansor Early Education Daycare Program

We sent both our now-7-year-old and currently-6-month-old to Almansor Center. It's been phenomenal!…read moreTo clarify, IRL is a large nonprofit that serves adults and children with special needs with a range of services; IRL runs a private elementary school (grades 3-8?) for children with physical and cognitive special needs on site, a site which was formerly a public elementary school; and alongside the Almansor Academy (the private school for special needs) is the Almansor Center / Early Education department. It's for neurotypical and special needs kids. The special needs kids are a small percentage, but I loved that my sons got to spend time with special needs kids who would be placed in a different class in public school. (Nonverbal, vision issues, etc.) This childcare for age 0-4 has almost zero online presence, which is why so few people know about it. But the other review explains how great they are. People from different neighborhoods send their kids. Check them out!

We left to attend a school closer to us, and on our final day, we were all in tears to say goodbye because that is how much the programs staff and teachers mean to our family. From before our son could walk, and through every big milestone, the caring teachers at Almansor have supported him developmentally, emotionally, and academically. We love the teachers, especially Teacher Alexis and Teacher Mary who our son still talks about. They provide so much love and support, and we always felt comfortable and at ease with leaving our kid in their care.
