I came back here a couple months ago after the new owners saw my bad review from the old business. I apologize for not rating the last experience; it was awesome. I came back tonight because of the last experience and I received a perfectly cooked pepperoni and sausage pizza. The crust was golden brown. There was some crispy cheese on some edges. Some crispy pepperonis. Lots of pepperoni and sausage and cheese. The sauce is sweet and I think the ingredients make a happy joes pizza superior. But when the bake is on point, it's one of the best. So thank you for baking it perfectly. The kids working there were polite. My food was ready in 20-25 minutes. I got a large pepperoni and sausage and medium taco for $40. Extremely lackluster experience. Our order took over 90 minutes to get to us after being told 45 minutes. We called after an hour and they truly didn't care. The first item we ate were the cheese sticks. Flavor was 2 stars out of 5. It could have used another handful of cheese and any ANY additional seasoning. We were all excited to try the taco pizza as it appeared to be their main item. This was a throw away item, we could not eat it. The meat was anything but taco flavored. My girlfriend and I decided to expand out horizons and try Happy Joe's tonight for dinner. Both of us had a long day so we opt-ed for delivery - we put our order in online for a taco pizza/cheese sticks and quoted a max of 45 minutes. We'll 45 minutes came and went and no sight of the pizza, my girlfriend called to get a status update the talked to a young girl who said it's out for delivery, keep in mind - they didn't even ask us for our information to check...1.5+ hours later the order shows up. I've had Happy Joe's years ago and it was delicious - this was the exact opposite of it. Overall, you're better off trying something else than this place. However, my best advice for you is to call to put your order in and get a delivery time, so you can plan accordingly... read more

Pizza was delivered at room temperature (yet somehow still way overcooked and even burnt on the outer sides) and when we called to address the issue, the manager on duty was very short with us and said it wasn't her problem because the pizzas were fine when she sent them out for delivery. It's mainly a delivery store, but they have a couple tables outside, so that's where we ate. I got the taco pizza, the little 4 slice personal size, but I made the mistake of not ordering the original. The Matador has peppers on it (delish) but no shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes or taco chips! Psh! So I went back in and asked for those toppings to throw on top and they didn't even charge me, which was really nice. Next time I will get the original and maybe add hot peppers. My bf got the cheese bread and it was really good, like stuffed with mozzarella. The tomato sauce you dip it in tasted chunky and fresh. I also liked the taco sauce for my pizza - great flavor! Happy Joe's is my ALL TIME FAVORITE PIZZA... Grew up with it, love it. However, the Urbandale location is one of the most inconsistent businesses I've dealt with. They constantly send you coupons to order since "it's been awhile since you've ordered, here's 20% off" which is nice bc they are higher priced than most, but I'm willing to pay! To only find out, they can't deliver tonight, too short staffed. This has happened 6+ times. Get your store staffed please. read more

We ordered 3 pizzas the afternoon of the Super Bowl. It was hours before the game so we could try to beat the busy time. We used DoorDash and have Dash Pass so don't have most of the fees. It was still $75 and no one got a large pizza. YIKES! That's a lot for pizza. We ordered a small Nacho Joe, a medium Nacho Joe, and a medium cheese. The ordering system makes you pay the extra to supreme your taco pizzas whether you like it or not however neither of our taco pizzas had the sour cream, onions, olives, etc that we paid for on them. Our pizzas did arrive in a timely manner so they weren't piping hot but were somewhat warm. It was really cold out so I didn't expect much in that department. The crusts on all three were really hard and crunchy nearly inedible. The cheese sauce was almost nonexistent on the Nacho Joe pizzas. They were very, very bad. I would have put Happy Joe's at one of the best places to eat taco pizza but not after our latest experience. No way will I spend that kind of money for worse than frozen pizza quality again. Casey's is so much better. And we can pick up Godfather's nearby which is also much better. If we had been eating inside, I would have demanded my money back. I think I should get my money back considering it was so bad. I don't think they should be allowed to serve that bad of food for that kind of money to people. It's wrong. They have shut down before and I think it's high time they shut down again. I don't know why they are putting out such bad pizza but we won't be back. I won't waste another penny there. Sadly, there aren't Happy Joe's in the Des Moines area intended for on-site dining any more... but the pizza is still great. We ordered the Crab Rangoon pizza (which I think has a limited run--it's not on the web menu--on the very thin crust, a one square foot pizza cut into eighths, and garlic bread with cheese. Packing for delivery is the unavoidable enemy of crunch, but despite that, we were quite pleased, and we'll order again. ADDENDUM: There are very good people working at this establishment. During our time in Pittsburgh, it was all too common for us to place an order with a pizza place there only to find out when we called well after the ETA that some number of their drivers didn't bother to come to work, so our order would be late--rather than telling us this up front so we could make an informed decision. Not Happy Joe's! The first time we called to order Crab Rangoon pizza, the courteous lady we spoke with warned us that things were very busy that evening and it would take longer than usual. We decided against ordering that night, but were so impressed with the good service even at the risk of not adding to business that evening that we (a) wrote the company to express our appreciation and (b) made very sure we ordered another day, and we are glad we did. read more

My husband is an Iowa native and we live in Denver, we were back to see family in Dubuque and called ahead to pick up a frozen version of our favorites on our drive back home. When we arrived there was a miscommunication and instead of frozen pizzas we just had unbaked versions- which, unfortunately, wouldn't have made it back to Denver. We were disappointed but it was an honest mix up. About an hour down the road the manager, Sean, called us back and offered to ship us frozen pizzas. How amazing! We really appreciate him going above and beyond for us, we are loyal happy joe's fans, and this is just another reminder why. Thank you guys! All our Iowa friends in Denver appreciate it too! Called 6 hours ahead and scheduled a pickup for carryout inly to get here at the designated time and be told that my pizzas havent even been put in the oven. Waited an extra 10 minutes for the lone employee in the store to keep taking phone calls before he went in the back and started making the pizzas. Whoever is scheduling the shifts should be embarrassed and quit. read more

I've always loved happy joes, but this time might have been my last time ever having it. When I arrived employees were out front the main entrance smoking. Not all employees had mask on in the building. When we mentioned they should have a mask on an employee just laughed it off. Then to top it off the pizza was cold! The two managers Janet and Lexi couldn't find my online order when I called 1 hour and 45 min after I ordered. I asked them to make me a pizza for free and refund my online order. I was hung up on and told they couldn't do that. I was told they couldn't refund my money because they didn't have my order. I was given a number to call.
