We finally made it to Pepp's on Sunday so we could try this long awaited Pizza spot. (Kim is a pizza nut and she has had her eye on this one!) Pepp's is located in a strip mall just off of interstate 80 and 86th on the northwest side of Des Moines in Urbandale. Surrounded by some other hotspots including Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt and Friedrichs Coffee so you really could make this an all day stop! (haha). The shop is small and only has seating for about 25 people (max) The open kitchen and walkup ordering works so you can see and hear everything going on. Decorations are eclectic and fun without being obnoxious. The place is clean and well lit. Menus are displayed in multiple locations and easy to read. Order Pizza by the slice or the whole thing along with sandwiches and extras. Grab a cup and a number, get your drink (no alcohol) and sit down. The lady at the counter was patient and kind while we deliberated our choices. Once we decided and ordered our Meatzilla Pizza ($21.50) we only waited about 10 minutes before it was delivered with a smile. First impressions - it is a well made pizza with ample toppings, the crust is thin, chewy and crispy and perfect! We really enjoyed the combination of canadian bacon, sausage and pepperoni with the little bits of ham. I had a little buyers remorse that we only ordered one pizza so I ordered a slice of the 'Pepp's Pie' to go. It was also delicious with the pepperoncini adding that nice tangy spice to the already tasty slice! While we were eating we witnessed one of the chefs come out and check with every table to make sure we were all happy - this was a very nice touch. In addition the manager came out at the request of our neighboring table to discuss catering options with them. Very good customer service all around! High points for Pepp's: Wood fired pizza with that characteristic crust, fresh toppings, creative combinations. Low points: The toppings on the pizzas with lots of bulk (large amount of toppings) were mostly in the middle of the pie...or had fallen in...but it made picking up the pieces quite messy as they'd fall off. Was also confused because they advertised an upside down pizza, but all of the pizzas we got were "normal" with the sauce on the bottom and the cheese on top and then the toppings on top of that. (Shrug) Our group tried a wide variety of pizzas, but the favorite was the white pizza with the hot honey on it. It really was tasty. Sometimes white pizzas don't have enough cheese or sauce on them and end up being kind of plain, but this one was tops! read more

Pepp's has relocated from Grimes to Urbandale! Before I get into the pizza I want to give a shout out to the staff here... After I left work I headed to Pepp's and from the minute I walked in the door... Wow! Friendly, personable, willing to indulge me as I asked multiple questions. A really great group of people! I've wanted to try Pepp's since they opened in Grimes, but my gf is a creature of habit and "upside down" pizza wasn't something that made her short list... Upside down is cheese first, then sauce, and lastly any other toppings. An homage to classic New York pizza. And it just wasn't something I wanted to drive from the old part of Clive out to Grimes for and then sit and eat in my car. The new location has dine in seating available! Also with the space they've added an additional oven! Pepp's opened about a year ago in Grimes, closed for about two weeks recently, and has now reopened in Urbandale. Pepp's offers pizza by the slice, the whole pie, salads, cheese bread, and cinnamon bread. As of today five different sandwiches for lunch along with their personal pizzas too. I wanted to try a couple of different slices. Pepp's Pie was my first choice and I asked for a recommendation on the second slice. Almost in unison multiple voices said White Pie. Here is how each is described on their web site. Pepp's Pie: Mozzarella, parmesan, pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, banana peppers, and tomato sauce. White Pie: Alfredo base, mozzarella, parmesan, ricotta, black pepper, red pepper, and honey. The Pepp's Pie was good. Served hot. I really liked the tomato sauce. Fresh ingredients. Excellent flavor! The White Pie though... That's a sleeper. I was hesitant. It's not something that is normally in my wheelhouse. It was fantastic! Probably the closest I get to this is the mix of red and alfredo sauce on the Spicy Italian at Uptown Food and Beverage in Ankeny. The richness of the cheese. The savory alfredo sauce. The faint sweetness of the honey. Just magical! For slices/dine-in you can order and pay at the front counter. Take a seat. They bring your food to you. Trash receptacles are available for you to bus your table when you're done. Take-out ordering is available online and via phone. Located in a strip on the West side of 86th just North of the Walgreens there is plenty of parking. They're still working on the decor. Think a sports motif. For seating you're looking at two booths, three low top tables and chairs, and a high top as options. I hear they may eventually be offering beer...but for right now Coke fountain drink products. Pricing was very reasonable. Two large slices and a drink for just under $13. For a quick lunch one slice would probably be good for most people. A great first visit! Now that they are just down 86th from me I know I'll be going back! Got to try that Vodka Roni next... If I still can't talk Heather into going it will either be me solo again.... Or with a couple of my kids in tow! A stellar team and a quality product. Check them out and try that White Pie! Say,YES, to the new location of "PEPP'S PIZZERIA" by ordering your fan favorite. The pepperoni is absolutely delicious in terms of the crust, large pie slices and the balance of flavors that make up the ingredients that give the pepperoni that rich blend of authentic flavors. As one enters the greeting upon entering and leaving is non descriptive, but the atmosphere is neat, with clean floors and the fountain bin was slurp free meaning pooling clean. Everyone seemed to enjoy their protein canvas of choice especially the fresh chicken, bacon and ranch sandwich -- although my toasted bun was somewhat hard and could use a better selection. We will definitely be going to Pepp's Pizzeria. We stopped in last night not realizing they were closed. So the young man behind the counter gave us a pizza they had made 2 hours earlier that was never picked up. It was delicious! He zipped it back in the oven for a few minutes to take the chill off. And oddly enough, it was the pizza I would have ordered for a slice. Fun atmosphere. A work in progress. Friendly staff and excellent pizza. We are looking forward to our next visit. The pizza is fantastic! BUT, the business is unusual in that you have to order by reservation and when they run out, that's it! The last 2 evenings they were closed by 7:30 pm after opening at 11am. Seems like either inexperience in preparation or they simply don't want to provide service any longer than than necessary. Delicious pizza, when you can get an order filled. Pepps is awesome! Wish I would have tried it sooner. Great crust and sauce. I have only had the cheese pizza and cheese sticks but plan on trying different pizzas soon. I will say I sure wish they had a margarita pizza that would complete checklist for best pizza in Des Moines. I'm always looking for new places & this one caught my eye today. I'd love to give this place a 5 star but I was disappointed in the lack of flavor. I'm not saying it was bad. I just felt the garlic sticks didn't have flavor by themselves or even with the vodka sauce. Same goes for the pizza just not much flavor. I'm definitely going to be going back. Service was great they greeted me once I walked in the door and my food was ready on time. Did an order online and had text messages keeping me in the loop. So finally decided to order pizzas to go tonight, why didn't I do this sooner?! The Weekly special, which should be on the regular menu ;), was amazing! Even get taco sauce and sour cream packets included. Also had the All meat, little greasy in the center, but once you hit that crust, drool, it's all good! My kid had the cheese pizza, tried it, may be the best cheese pizza I've ever had. He also loved the garlic bread sticks, even though they are much smaller than the picture shows on the website. We will def be back, nice to have a place like this local. So, let's keep them going! read more

First time getting pizza here, for lunch today. Wowie what a great pizza! The crust makes or breaks a pizza and this pizza crust is nicely crispy and browned perfectly, with lots of air pockets. Just the right amount of toppings, cheese and sauce, preventing the crust from becoming soggy. Overall this pizza was an excellent pizza. read more

I've had their pizza on several ccasions and it's always delicious! The staff is super nice and the place is clean, which is always a nice added touch. My favorite pizza so far is the White pie, I love the honey drizzle they put on it. Oh, also the Taco pizza might just be the best I've ever had. It's takeout only & you have to order online.
