Chicken pot pie soup to go
Mary P.

This is such a quaint and charming place for lunch! Had lunch today..April 6th..see receipt. It is located off of Colfax Highway in Grass Valley (Chicago Park area). I haven't been here in a few years but it has kept its charm. NOTE: they do not serve breakfast. There is indoor and outdoor dining plus picnic tables in the grassy area. I split the patty melt with my friend along with fries (4 bucks extra for fries). The patty melt was yummy with grilled onions and melted cheese. The fries were just ordinary and nothing special. We had the chicken pot pie soup to go..tasted it, and it was creamy and delicious! My friend ordered a slice of caramel pecan pie to go as well..looked scrumptious! The coffee was strong..just the way we like it! They are known for their pies (especially apple). You can order a full pie or by the slice. They also sell jams and cookies. They are open from 930 am to 3pm. Closed Sunday and Monday. Its a scenic drive to Happy Apple and very relaxing. Country feel! Thanks to Melanie for keeping the coffee going and great customer service!

We stopped here two weeks ago for a restroom break. The plan was to finish work first and then eat later. Nope, we had pie first! We shared incredibly fresh, delicious peach pie and French apple with a crumbly top. Our favorite was the peach. My left hand grabbed the top of my head, my right hand clutched the plastic fork, and my soul left my body. We returned the following week, and my husband was happy with his pastrami sandwich and fries. My hamburger was simple and satisfying as well. Our peach milkshakes were the best and made perfectly! The setting is gorgeous, with plenty of trees, shade, and picnic tables in the front and a cozy patio with views of their orchards and potted flowers in the back. The restrooms are small and clean. Service was warm and welcoming. Let's keep supporting this fantastic family-owned business. I plan on visiting again with friends soon.

Delicious little gem around Rollins Lake. Stopped by and everyone was friendly. I tried the Harvest Salad ($15) that had a variety of lettuce, nuts, bell pepper, blue cheese, poppy seed dressing, and grilled chicken. Definitely will be stopping again to try out the pies!

My mom brought me to Happy Apple Kitchen. It's a cute little walk-up restaurant with tons of options to pick from. The lady working was very helpful. I ordered the Apple Milkshake, a Cheeseburger & Fries. And a slice of Apple Pie to go. There's tons of tables and open space (grass) to eat your meal. There's also a patio in the back with tables and chairs. The scenery is beautiful and relaxing. The cheeseburger and fries were absolutely delish!!!! And the Apple Milkshake was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. It's such a a cute, hidden gem. And I can't wait to go back!!!!

In the little ole foothills town of Grass Valley is the Happy Apple Kitchen restaurant. It's a quaint, cozy, homey cafe. Family owned and operated since 1974. Bierwagen family. Step right in, the restaurant has the look and feel of a cozy small house. Complete with an outdoor covered back patio on the east side. The AC in this place was working like a champ on the crazy hot summer afternoon that I popped in. Luv that. The staff are sweethearts. Ooolala... they have homemade pies and peach shakes. The fruit is picked from their very own Orchards. Yes... the family owns an orchard and farm. The gorgeous pies have thick, flaky, substantial, and tasty crust. Perfect to hold the juicy fat fruit pie filling. Luv in their apple pie. Perfect filling to crust ratio. Not overly packed, so no wet soggy crust... no sirree. Not overly sweet either. They have other pie flavors. A slice is about$4, add ala mode fo 75 cents. The slices are humongous. The seasonal peach milkshake is super fresh and has real chunks of peach in it. Peachy keen! Yum! But beware of the pit. When I took a couple of sips, I tasted small grinds of the pit that I spit out. The menu also includes burgers $7-11, sandwiches $7-12, salads $5-15, and kids menu $5.50. They are open Monday- Saturday, 9:30 am-4 pm in Spring-Fall. They close at 3 pm in the Winter. Next door is the farm market building that sells... you guessed it...fresh fruits and vegetables from their orchards or other local farmers. If you are passing by, stop in to check out Happy Apple and while your at it.. the Farm Stand. #happyapplekitchenresturantcolfax #happlespplekitchenpies #farmmarketcolfax

I would assume on busier days like the weekend, parking would be pretty difficult. We were sat right away. It smelled so good in there from the fresh squeezed orange juice. There are plenty of tables and bar seating. My mom ordered the portabella scramble and I ordered a half order of the portabella Benedict. We both really liked what we ordered. The potatoes were lacking a little bit of flavor, but salt helped. Portions were good-sized for the price. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. We will be back if we are in the area.

Well, this place delivered nothing short of an excellent experience! They were pretty busy, so we sat the bar. The service was great, fast and nothing short of amazing! Got to sample their beverage menu and have one of my favorite eggs Benedict dishes... hot off the grill, mouthwatering and delicious. The setting and atmosphere was pretty chill and relaxed, with some friendly neighbors around. I will be back to this place again and look forward to expanding my knowledge of their menu, as there was multiple things I wanted to try. Go check it out today, if you haven't been. This place is happening for sure!!!

Here are my / our experiences and observations: 1. After trying just about everything on the breakfast/lunch menu, I have yet to had a bad meal. The food is always done just right and the flavors excellent. 2. The service is amazing; when your not looking the coffee mug, water or cold beverage glass is always kept full. Often the waitress will come around to check if all is okay. The waitresses are very well dressed and groomed with personalities to match. 3. The restaurant is very clean with a touch of home environment. What are my favorite meals: Breakfast: Their "Waffle (plain or Belgian), eggs (cooked to your liking), bacon or sausage (patties or links) combo" is awesome. Lunch: They are known for their burgers, fry's and onion rings - the best. The same can be said for their Patty Melt and French Dip sandwiches. Awe heck, all the sandwiches are GREAT! They offer a couple of various flavors of soups daily, all very good, especially their Lobster Bisque when available! YOU KNOW A PLACE HAS TO BE GOOD BY CHECKING OUT THEIR PARKING LOT. From 7:00 am until 1:00 pm the lot is usually full, however their seems to be a good turnover. WAIT FOR A SPACE TO BECOME AVAILABLE, YOU WON'T REGRET IT !!! PS: No, I am not an owner or am I being paid to give this review. I am speaking for myself and many other of my acquaintances.

My Dad lives in Grass Valley and every time I come up from the Bay Area this is where I eat…read more Now, caveat, he's in his 70s and thinks a $19 sandwich with housemade meats on craft bread is absolutely outrageous, he would be just as happy eating at Subway. There's nothing wrong with his opinion, I don't eat that garbage, but if you can't tell or don't care about quality (yes, I'm being snarky, but seriously, if you're going to complain you have options...) Anyhow, this is where I come to eat, I always pay, and he complains about the price of the sandwich (I paid for) while he eats all of his sandwich and then finishes mine- it is also a lot of food, usually two meals for me, but I'm not a voracious eater. If you're still here after my rant, the food here is quality, you're going to pay more, you're going to wait for it to be prepared, because its not some cafeteria conveyer belt sandwich- it's crafted. The shop is very small, ambiance is- small meat counter, the soda machine has been broken as long as I've been coming, there's no indoor dining. I know, I'm not selling it. BUT Outside you have outdoor tables under the trees, there are birds singing, it feels completely Nevada City, much preferred to eating inside. Typically I order the Reuben and I think that's their best sandwich, but I've also tried the Roast Beef, Italian Ham, and Turkey. I know I mentioned their soda machine is broken, but they have plenty of sodas in a cooler as well as a few very good sides- I'm partial to the Dijon potato salad. So final thoughts- cheapskates with broken tastebuds stay home, let the real ones eat.

At least I don't have to be curious about this place anymore. And I assume times are hard for local businesses, so I'm glad I supported them this one time.

My partner and I were on a trip to Coalfax, so we decided to look this place up. While I had read reviews that criticized the waitresses and staff for their poor attitudes, I wanted to give the place a chance and not let negative opinions deter me. After all, everyone has different preferences and experiences. We chose to sit outside, which was a lovely idea, but unfortunately, the area was overrun with flies, making it quite uncomfortable and we had a hard time enjoying the experience. I understand that bugs are common in outdoor settings, especially in the woods, but I have a suggestion that might help alleviate the problem. I recommend adding a few more ceiling fans to circulate the air and deter the flies. I noticed that you already have some fans, but they're not enough. Please consider addressing this issue to enhance the overall experience of sitting outside in your beautiful outdoor seating area. Moving on to the service, the waitress was decent, but there were some uhm issues that made us laugh. When we placed our orders, we asked if there was a dinner menu, as my partner wanted steak. However, the menu we received was more suited for brunch. The waitress informed us that dinner wasn't actually available for another hour, but she was able to substitute some items for us and make us a dinner plate. Then our orders came and this is when we started laughing. Every time a healthier dish was brought out the waitress would hand it to my partner, who is smaller than me and every time something unhealthy was brought It was automatically assumed I had ordered the unhealthy food. It was actually the opposite but what actually bothered me is the waitress never asked us who's food was who's but she took the order lmfao so that made no sense. I understand that I'm the larger person, but it was a bit off-putting. We couldn't help but laugh as I've learned to laugh at awkward situations, but my partner wanted to comment, but I asked them not to. It wasn't worth ruining our dinner. Anyway the waitress seemed tired, uninterested, and moody but ultimately was kind enough I guess. I understand that we're all tired and have personal issues going on but you're at work. I would appreciate a smile and friendly treatment. Not a moody, uninterested, annoyed seeming waitress. I'm extremely kind, polite, and friendly, so when someone isn't that way to me, it's disappointing. Anyway all in all i actually liked this place. The food and the prices were great for the place it was. But please fix the fly issue and please remind your staff to be friendly to customers and watch the way they carry themselves PLEASE!
