Reluctantly we went there as the last two times the waitresses were horrible - took order, brought food and never came back. This trip was different. You must ask for Billie! She was, by far, the best waitress we've ever had. She helped with placing our order and followed through. I asked for a small tub of Thousand Island for my French Fries and she brought it for NO charge unlike some I won't mention. When it was time to go, she asked if we needed a box and my wife said yes. She even brought a small box for the cole slaw. Tip: do not order cole slaw and take it home - it vinegared the next day;-( The restaurant is a bit pricey but we will go back as long as Billie is there! read more

Lumberjacks is a small chain of eight restaurants, with seven of them located in Northern California, and a lone outpost located in Las Vegas. The name fits the restaurant, as the generous portions will keep a lumberjack, along with a football linebacker, full and happy. Can you say "rustic?" ... rustic is the word for the decor of the restaurant, as the decor revolves around a lumberjack theme. The decor is rustic, the cuisine is "Diner Americana," but the dining room is inviting, clean and comfortable. The dining room carries out the rustic, lumberjack theme, as it's decorated with faux logs and wood paneling, which enhances the atmosphere. Period photos, along with state-of-the-art video monitors decorate the walls. Love it!! From the "Weekday Specials" menu, I went with a New York steak, hashbrown potatoes, fried eggs, sourdough toast, and an optional side of breakfast. Yowza!!! My last breakfast of 2024 turned out to be one of the best breakfasts that I'd the pleasure to enjoy during the entire year. Thanks to Ashley, Lindsay and the friendly and talented staff at Lumberjacks, located in Grass Valley. The "Weekday Specials" aren't listed on the menu, nor are they posted on a chalk board, and they're offered to you by your server, as you're greeted at your table. Yes, I looked over the menu, but a New York steak breakfast, cooked to order, sounded out like a great way to say adios to 2024. As per my order, my steak arrived cooked medium rare, complete with attractive grill marks. As explained by my server, the steak was "breakfast sized" around 6-oz or so... but size didn't matter, as this steak was not only attractive to look at, but it was seasoned, juicy, tender and simply delicious. Lumberjacks is a well kept secret for gold country dining, as they make a superior breakfast steak! My side of choice was hashbrown potatoes, and I made a superior choice, as these hashbrowns were some of the best I've ever enjoyed in Nevada County dining! The potatoes were shredded - naturally - and fried to a perfect golden brown, crispy on the outside, and tender on the inside, which made for some of the most perfect hashbrowns that you could ever imagine. The two eggs were fried as per my order, sunnyside up, which works well with hashbrown potatoes. Two slices of sourdough toast were perfectly toasted, buttered, and worked with the breakfast. The optional side of breakfast gravy really added "the period to the sentence," as it was thick, creamy, with chunky sausage and simply delicious. I alternated between dipping bits of steak and potato into the gravy... whatever the case, it made for an amazing add-on to enhance this superior breakfast. Happy New Year... well... almost, but the check for this amazing breakfast came to... get this... $12.79! That's right... steak, eggs, and an optional side of gravy. I was dazzled, amazed and shocked... as I expected well on the high side of $20.00. My dining experience on this last day of 2024 was simply amazing! Lindsay and Ashley treated my like family, and I enjoyed a "New York Steak of the Century" breakfast, to "ace out" the year 2024, which has been a fantastic year for Gold Country Dining. If you want huge portions than this is your place to go! Lumberjacks is located off of Nevada city highway in Grass Valley. The three of us had an early breakfast today. They open at 7am. It is warm and cozy inside with alot of woodwork. They also have a counter for 4 people as well. We shared the 4 egg omelet with potatoes and 2 egg scrambled with bacon and hash browns and toast. We also got the biscuits and gravy. SO much leftover food! The omelet had so much meat in it and the hash browns were good and not greasy. I didnt try the biscuits and gravy but they said it was fresh and tasty. The coffee was really good! We couldnt pass up the huge slice of chocolate cake with whip cream! We all had a bite and brought that back home with the rest of the leftovers. They also serve beer and wine and my friend had a bloody mary ( nothing special about the bloody mary). They have several tvs inside the restaurant. Our waittess Mary was friendly and kept the coffee full! If you are really hungry than this is a great option! read more

Struggling to give a rating. My spouse and I are semi-regulars at this restaurant, both for breakfast and dinner, and occasionally lunches, too. I just wanted to relate my experience this morning, which was an outlier. We went for breakfast and were seated near a regular political group meeting of people with red hats. This group was loud and boisterous today, and there was no way to not hear them. As they talked they became increasingly boisterous and their loud conversations drifted more and more toward language that expressed hatred, contempt and anger toward various groups of Americans, chiefly women, gays, and trans people, but also of course to anyone who disagreed with the president. It got so loud and offensive to so many that the server seated us on the other side of the restaurant so we wouldn't have to endure the noise and insults during our meal. Thank you! However, that same server (who is wonderful!) inadvertently forgot to put in our order. So we sat there for over an hour waiting for our breakfast. Eventually, people seated around us started ordering lunches! So I eventually brought it to her attention. She hadn't noticed that we had been sitting there forever with no food. The server was appropriately apologetic and quickly got our orders fired, and 15 minutes after I mentioned it to her we had our food, hot and exactly as ordered. Maybe this next part is just me being unreasonable. When we were done, the server brought the bill. I kind of expected she would comp our coffees or something, for the inconvenience, but nope. No comp, no discount, no adjustment for having to wait over an hour. I was surprised and a little disappointed, but I paid without comment and still gave her a 20% tip. But some acknowledgement of the error and our inconvenience on the bill would have been nice, especially since we eat there often and all the servers know us. Now, I do NOT condemn the server for the mistake of not putting in our order. It was busy, and changing our table got her out of her routine, and she just forgot. Mistakes will happen. I always say if you're not making mistakes, you're not working. Especially true in the world of short order restaurants. Nevertheless, I'm still disappointed that they didn't offer us some sort of symbolic nod to the long wait and inconvenience. Am I the jerk for thinking that way? I dunno. Some of my friends think the whole meal should have been comped, especially because we are semi-regulars. I'm not sure about that, but...something? Anything? BTW, for those into early bird dinners, Lumberjacks has the BEST! $8.99 gets you a huge meal from a selection that includes roasted chicken, turkey dinner with all the fixins, chicken fried steak, fish & chips, ribeye steak and others. Included with a sizeable entre is an entire small loaf of bread with butter, two big sides (one choice being a huge baked potato that's big enough to be a meal unto itself), and even dessert. It's so big I can never finish it. The quality is surprisingly good, and the price is less than a crappy little fast food order at McDonalds. An amazing deal in these inflationary days. Anyway, between being hit over the head with politics and having to wait over an hour only to find they never put our order in, with no mitigation on the check, this turned out to be a less fantastic visit than we usually have. So to start I walked in with my 3 kids it wasn't busy at all and it took 10 minutes to get a table and the manager Tonya greeted me in a really rude and disrespectful way and was giving me a attitude when I asked about certain foods on the menu and my kids were afraid of her for how rude she looked and was and I took my kids who are all under 10 to wash there hands in the bathroom before we ate and a worker named Jose started talking to me talking about how pretty my kids are when there all under 10 he is creepy and weird and he told me how he has kids of his own he is a creep and should be fired he really creeped me out with what he was doing he tried to rub my youngest ones shoulders but I stopped him and my kid was in tears and it made me feel uncomfortable and sick to my stomach can't believe he got a job around kids I also ordered a salad and it was gross and It took a minute to get my food Don't go to this place it's full of creeps and rude people like the manager This place deserves a one star read more

It used to be very good, now subpar. I had a burger that had no flavor and a rubbery texture. I thought it could be a one-off, however we went back for an omelet and it wasn't bad but not like it was a few years ago. This is the best place to eat in Grass Valley and Nevada city combined. The food is large portions and tastes excellent. Perfect for family meals and the service is incredible. They have new menus with higher prices which is common in this economy. We can normally order a meal and take home half for leftovers. Not anymore. So many restaurants in the Grass Valley area close after following this pattern. Raise prices, give less food which results in less customers then shut down. It doesn't work. Went to lumberjacks on Christmas day. Very grateful someone was open to serve dinner for my mom and me since we didn't have it in us to make a meal at home this year. It was fairly busy when we arrived and we only waited a few minutes to get a table. We got our drinks right away and someone took our order promptly and the food didn't take long to arrive. Mom ordered the chicken fried steak, and I had the holiday ham meal with all the fixins. They forgot the cranberry sauce, but gave me a side of it to go with my leftovers. The servings are massive. We both brought home about half the meal for later. The food quality is nothing to rave about. Also don't have any complaints. It's just your standard, home style, "meat and potatoes" type of food. If I were going out to eat without my mom, I probably wouldn't choose it myself, as I prefer locally sourced, organic ingredients, whenever possible. But since I knew my mom would love it, this is what we did for Christmas. She was very happy. When we were full, we sat and waited quite a while for to go boxes, and the check. They had gotten more busy for the dinner rush. It was difficult to get someone's attention, but we finally did. Everyone we interacted with was very friendly, and the place was very clean, including the bathroom. After dinner, mom and I drove around to look at Christmas lights and it was a sweet mother-daughter outing. read more

Lumberjacks was a secondary choice and we were warned the food quality did not compare. I ordered biscuits and gravy as it Simone of my favorites, though I do not care for sausage gravy. Which is what I got. In the old days, Denny's called their sausage free gravy "country gravy". Same name here, but it had sausage. My friend Jim ordered the same. What was particularly gross was the freezer burn flavor the biscuits. I mean, how expensive is a biscuit? There is a better place nearby that has a fantastic reputation. Food was really good! Hubster and I each got a senior breakfast. There was so much food we both were unable to finish. My poached eggs came out perfect. The whipped butter for my French toast was super soft. Hubster's over easy eggs were perfect, as well. Coffee was good. Bacon on both meals was really good. This place looked cute and decided to check it out, and it was the worst dining experience of my existence. So first, the waitress was not attentive and rude. She was wearing a lot of makeup. She didn't check up on us, and she had black hair and HUGE lashes that looked like it was gonna fall in my food. So, it's already not a great start. Then again, I came here for the over priced af food. The soup that came with our order freaking looked and tasted like Progresso. I like Progresso as much as the next person. However, I didn't spend my hard earned cash on a can of soup. The food was freaking raw and dried, and it was damn nasty. The other waitress younger light brown blonde hair was rude . As well, what's with all these rude girls working here. That's wild. The food was nasty. The service was bad. Even the waitress admitted she didn't check on us, and she was her on damn phone. Please do not eat here unless you can't warm up a can of Progresso yourself and wanna spend over 60 dollars on garbage. 0/10 will not be recommended. Gross af!!!!! read more

The place is older style cabin style place. Quiet and old definitely wear the older crowd goes. Food was ok had decent flavor definitely needed hot sauce! Tabasco had to do. What an awesome restaurant! The people who work here are so friendly and honestly want you to have a very satisfying experience. My wife, son and I had French Toast (with a side of sausage). Denver Omelet and Jack's Omelet. The portions were huge (see pictures). I also saw a post from a customer who said Lumberjacks had high prices and could make the food cheaper at home - then stay home! First time at a Lumberjacks. This was the second time we've been out for breakfast since COVID closures and were absolutely shocked at the prices for what we got. Omelettes were advertised as 4 egg but those must have been the world's tiniest eggs the omelette was super thin. They had a very limited Senior menu and even those prices were easily double what we expected. Service was 5 stars - staff was friendly and attentive. Food tasted fine it was just crazy overpriced. $8.99 for a slice of nothing special apple pie. Did not order no thank you I can get a whole pie for that price. And the pie in the case was maybe a 10" cut into 6 pieces and that was in no way a $54 pie. The little cream pies looked like the Cyrus O'Malley pies you get in the supermarket and they were pricy as well. Decent food but at way too expensive prices. Will not be back. read more

Ambiance is ok, service was very prompt but the breakfast we had was grease, grease, and more grease. I had hashbrowns, 2 eggs, and 2 sausage. The hashbrowns were SO oily, even the potatatoes inside the brown outter were SO oily! The eggs were SO SLIPPERY with oil they could have easily flown off the plate.
