Stopped by this place on out way to Poker Flat. We had the black n blue angus burger with half fries and half onion rings. Food was good. Atmosphere was rustic and cool. Cannot comment on staff as there was only the one bartender who was running the whole place. There was a little delay on refills of our drinks due to her being busy and being the only person waiting on the customers. We'd recommend this place. read more

It's like the name says - a corner bar with some really good food. I had a great burger with blue cheese and a Guinness stout - and beer battered onion rings. It was perfect. There were some pretty funny regulars in there enjoying each other's company and they were very open about sharing their company. It's not a famous or glamorous place...just the old time corner, friendly bar where acquaintances come & enjoy each other's company. First off this place is a dive... as in 'funky roadhouse tavern.' There is typically quite the assortment of interesting local characters perched at the bar. Sometimes the restaurant behind the bar is actually open, but often it's not. If you don't like eating in a completely grubby bar atmosphere, we highly recommend ordering to-go. We give the food a solid 3.5 for what it is, but the atmosphere and the prices get 2 stars. The good news is that you don't need to worry about ever being underdressed when you go here. The bad news is that you're paying the same prices for the food that you would in a nice, clean, sit-down restaurant, which can be kind of disconcerting when the bill comes. However, if you find yourself stuck in the North San Juan area and are in need a a real meal (something not out of a can or box from the nearby gas station), this is the only place to get an actual meal in the evening hours. (During the day try The Ridge Cafe. Also rather funky, and just as expensive, but way healthier fare and lots more options.). The standard menu is pretty basic... here it is in a nutshell: assorted beef burgers, calamari burger, french dip, steak sandwich, philly cheesesteak, BLT, fish and chips, Caesar salad (with or without chicken), house salad. They also have a daily special or two, and a daily soup. We've had some pretty good specials recently, so be sure to ask when you call what they're serving that night. A couple of times we've been surprised as the food was better than expected. Tuesday nights is "Taco Tuesdays." Our order had two pretty large soft-style corn tortilla tacos (beef, pork or fish), acceptable Mexican rice, dreadfully boring beans, and a bit of salad. Other recent specials were pesto pasta, shrimp linguine, BBQ boneless chicken breast (served w/ baked potato, side veggie, and soup or salad). The BBQ sauce was fairly mild, but the overall flavor of the chicken, and the sauteed zucchini was acceptable. Friday and Saturday night is Prime Rib. We took a chance and ordered the Prime Rib in the "Surf and Turf" special. This was a real mixed bag. The batter-fried shrimp weren't too good -- way too much batter, cooked a bit dark, and a bit greasy (due to too much batter). The shrimp were decent sized, and once we'd peeled off more than half the over-fried breading, the shrimp itself was tasty and cooked well and had a good flavor. The Prime Rib was actually exceptionally tender and flavorful (opposite of another review here), however ours had the most gigantic slab of fat on the plate. I mean, I know prime rib can be fatty around the edges but this was an ENORMOUS hunk of fat. Otherwise it was surprisingly good, but expensive for what we got. We paid $28. for the Surf and Turf, and that was definitely over-priced for the quality. I'd say $21. or $22. maybe, but they need to work on the shrimp. If you do order a baked potato to-go, ask them not to put the sour cream in with your hot food as by the time you get home it's a melted soupy mess. The things we've had lately that were quite good: all the soups (standout was the cauliflower pepper-jack, chicken tortilla soup was pretty good too, and we really appreciated that the clam chowder tasted homemade and was not the usual thick, gloppy version so many restaurants seem to plunk down). Friends say the half-pound burgers are decent, as is the BLT, and the Caesar salad (standard fare, nothing great, but fine), and the Calamari burger (kind of bland, but if you're not a red-meat person and want a burger this is your choice. Pretty good for what it is). Their french fries are usually pretty good and prefer these over the onion rings which remind us of the overly battered kind of greasy shrimps (think maybe they use the same batter for both). They also serve a few desserts, and of course lots of alcohol if that's your thing. The waitstaff has tended to be pretty pleasant lately, so that's another plus. One comment is that we find it unnecessary that they blast loud rock n' roll music in the evenings when the place is nearly empty, and there are 10 or 12 people sitting around eating dinner and 2 people drinking at the bar. I mean, I understand if it's Saturday night at 10 o'clock and the drinks are pouring, crank up the tunes, but when you've got one geriatric guy drinking at the bar, two families with small kids under 8, a two couples having dinner, it's not really necessary to blast the music as if you're the hottest bar in town. If you don't have super high expectations on the food, and you know up front you'll be paying full restaurant (not dive bar) prices, you'll probably walk out pretty satisfied with what you had, or at least have a full tummy and not be unhappy with the experience. read more

This place was really OVERPRICED!!! I sat down and waited for roughly 20 minutes waiting for a waitress that did not exist. The burgers were greasy (the grease soaked through the bun). Seemingly in the middle of no-where on highway 49 near North San Juan is this little BAR - cafe. For us naive Oregonians, Peterson's is a little intimidating at first because to get to the restaurant area you must walk through the bar. My guess is, the bar is a truly "happening" place in the evening. Both the bar and restaurant look a little "rough" but the staff is very friendly and we learned the food is good. My wife had a bowl of soup while I had the calamari burger. Both were very good and so was the coffee. Yes, I would return here another day. They serve breakfast only on Sunday so that might be a treat. read more

The best fish and chips we had in quite some time. funky, cool, the neighborhood gathering place... it's a real look a how the folks live up in the mountains! This is a good road house bar and restaurant. The service is terrible and the bartenders can't be bothered to make anything with more than two ingredients. However, the locally raised free range burgers make the experience worth it. They have great mixed greens salads also (highly unusual for this kind of place in my experience). The local color leaves a lot to be desired. With their nightly bar fights and bad attitudes toward outsiders I highly recommend being out of there by 7-8pm. read more

While the music was good, it was too loud for breakfast. This is basically a bar.... a cold bar at that. No heat on at all. Food was ok, but barely warm. Having grown up in North San Juan, then moved to "town", I had not eaten at the restaurant / cafe in years. Along with me were were 4 people from England. Two of them ordered a double cheese burger. I swear each of the hand made hamburger patties had to have weighed a third of a pound, for a total weight of two-thirds of a pound. Cooked to perfection and placed on a Paul Bunyan size Kaiser roll, they were enhanced with REAL hand-cut, fresh from a potato, French Fries. A French Dip, a Calamari Burger, and a Chicken Burger were exceedingly delicious! Will we go again? Yes! The English guests will return in 2012, but I won't wait that long. I was told that Mr. Dunn is the owner.... and may he always be the owner, too!! read more

We stopped to find a cabin-type lodge restaurant. This place has a friendly staff. I was kinda intimidated by their location and was expecting to find Seabass drinking boiler makers inside. However this place was a pleasant surprise after a long hot day on the river. We had the special of the day; a rib eye. Nothing special. No thrills just meat & potatoes and beer. The meal was overpriced considering the ambiance, staff and service. It looks like a cool place to have a beer, but fine dining it's not. This place wasn't bad, but I think next time I'll wait the 15 minute drive to Nevada City. read more

This diner had closed for a while and reopened under new management and staff. I was happy when they finally opened again. But I was quickly disappointed. I used to love the food here and always thought the staff was nice. Until our last visit. We must had went in on a bad day for the bar tender. She was SO RUDE from the start, she barely acknowledged us as we stood waiting to be seated!! When she did we asked to sit outside (because it was a beautiful warm day) She says very condescendingly "we don't normally let people eat on the patio, but I guess it's ok". She then tells us we have to come inside to order our food IF we sit outside! We chose to sit outside 1 because she was rude and 2 because it was warmer outside than inside. When this RUDE bar lady brought out our food out (which I was surprised she did), she didn't bring condiments or napkins. I went in and got them myself. As I walked back outside she had the nerve to ask me to bring in our food baskets and the condiments when we were done. Needless to say we didn't (clean up after ourselves), nor did we leave a tip and we will not go back. read more
