Happy Apple Kitchen is nestled between Colfax and Grass Valley. It's a short little drive that instantly makes me feel like I'm on vacation, very close to the lake too. It has a very homey feel, the staff is welcoming and treats you like family. Eating outside is very relaxing in the shade, perfect spot to stop by with your dog. The patio outside is very nice and inside is cool on a hot summer day. I've had a hamburger here a couple times, it's 5 stars, you can tell the quality of the grass fed meat. Family also tried the fish and chips and the chicken strips, my hamburger was wayyyyy better. The tartar sauce was homemade and very good. The onion rings were outstanding! The fries weren't that interesting. Took home a peach vanilla shake, and it was fresh, floral and creamy, perfect for a hot summer day. We got dessert to bring home , everything was really good, however, the Apple cake for $12 stood out and I will be back for that alone. If you blink, you will miss this place. This is such a quaint and charming place for lunch! Had lunch today..April 6th..see receipt. It is located off of Colfax Highway in Grass Valley (Chicago Park area). I haven't been here in a few years but it has kept its charm. NOTE: they do not serve breakfast. There is indoor and outdoor dining plus picnic tables in the grassy area. I split the patty melt with my friend along with fries (4 bucks extra for fries). The patty melt was yummy with grilled onions and melted cheese. The fries were just ordinary and nothing special. We had the chicken pot pie soup to go..tasted it, and it was creamy and delicious! My friend ordered a slice of caramel pecan pie to go as well..looked scrumptious! The coffee was strong..just the way we like it! They are known for their pies (especially apple). You can order a full pie or by the slice. They also sell jams and cookies. They are open from 930 am to 3pm. Closed Sunday and Monday. Its a scenic drive to Happy Apple and very relaxing. Country feel! We stopped here two weeks ago for a restroom break. The plan was to finish work first and then eat later. Nope, we had pie first! We shared incredibly fresh, delicious peach pie and French apple with a crumbly top. Our favorite was the peach. My left hand grabbed the top of my head, my right hand clutched the plastic fork, and my soul left my body. We returned the following week, and my husband was happy with his pastrami sandwich and fries. My hamburger was simple and satisfying as well. Our peach milkshakes were the best and made perfectly! The setting is gorgeous, with plenty of trees, shade, and picnic tables in the front and a cozy patio with views of their orchards and potted flowers in the back. The restrooms are small and clean. Service was warm and welcoming. Let's keep supporting this fantastic family-owned business. I plan on visiting again with friends soon. read more

I love the Ortega turkey Sando! It's so good. I usually get a half sandwich with a cup of soup. Everything I've tried has been quite tasty. Cookies and pies are great as well. The ladies that work there are really cute and sweet. They even found and returned my wallet which I clumsily left behind one day. I was just that darn focused on devouring that Ortega turkey. Yum. Delicious little gem around Rollins Lake. Stopped by and everyone was friendly. I tried the Harvest Salad ($15) that had a variety of lettuce, nuts, bell pepper, blue cheese, poppy seed dressing, and grilled chicken. Definitely will be stopping again to try out the pies! read more

My mom brought me to Happy Apple Kitchen. It's a cute little walk-up restaurant with tons of options to pick from. The lady working was very helpful. I ordered the Apple Milkshake, a Cheeseburger & Fries. And a slice of Apple Pie to go. There's tons of tables and open space (grass) to eat your meal. There's also a patio in the back with tables and chairs. The scenery is beautiful and relaxing. The cheeseburger and fries were absolutely delish!!!! And the Apple Milkshake was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Dined in the patio this afternoon 8/10/2024 with our small dog, and it was lovely! Surrounded by hummingbirds and butterflies, young grapes ripening on the vines surrounding the porch turned patio. My photos don't do it justice. My daughter had the BLT, I had a turkey bacon Swiss Roll, and my husband had the double cheese burger. Portions were filling and massive, even the puppy got full of beef, bacon, and turkey. The three of us the specialty walnut raisen oatmeal cookie, walnut chocolate chip cookie and the apple cupcakes with its mild vanilla cream cheese icing. What a beautiful little restaurant in the middle of a fall day. The interior takes you back in time, with knotty pine and comfortable booths. The menu has many options. I decided on a free range burger that had that special taste! The fries were nice and hot. My wife loves chili and she enjoyed her bowl. Service was excellent, friendly, and homey. In the little ole foothills town of Grass Valley is the Happy Apple Kitchen restaurant. It's a quaint, cozy, homey cafe. Family owned and operated since 1974. Bierwagen family. Step right in, the restaurant has the look and feel of a cozy small house. Complete with an outdoor covered back patio on the east side. The AC in this place was working like a champ on the crazy hot summer afternoon that I popped in. Luv that. The staff are sweethearts. Ooolala... they have homemade pies and peach shakes. The fruit is picked from their very own Orchards. Yes... the family owns an orchard and farm. The gorgeous pies have thick, flaky, substantial, and tasty crust. Perfect to hold the juicy fat fruit pie filling. Luv in their apple pie. Perfect filling to crust ratio. Not overly packed, so no wet soggy crust... no sirree. Not overly sweet either. They have other pie flavors. A slice is about$4, add ala mode fo 75 cents. The slices are humongous. The seasonal peach milkshake is super fresh and has real chunks of peach in it. Peachy keen! Yum! But beware of the pit. When I took a couple of sips, I tasted small grinds of the pit that I spit out. The menu also includes burgers $7-11, sandwiches $7-12, salads $5-15, and kids menu $5.50. They are open Monday- Saturday, 9:30 am-4 pm in Spring-Fall. They close at 3 pm in the Winter. Next door is the farm market building that sells... you guessed it...fresh fruits and vegetables from their orchards or other local farmers. Today I was on my backroads motorcycle tour in Nevada county, CA and stopped off to see what this wonderful little place was like. From the outside, on many rides when I passed by, I saw people sitting on benches under the trees out front and was finally curious to see what it was. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought that the only thing they sold was pies... No, this nice little quaint hideout had a lot more. First of all, there was more parking than I could see from the road on Hwy 174. Second, there were lots of tables almost overflowing with people enjoying FOOD. It was lunch time. Third, I was able to view a tremendous menu of sandwiches, burgers, drinks (don't recall if they sold alcohol, since I don't drink), deserts, and a variety of pies. Fourth, the prices are wonderfully reasonable. Fifth, the indoor seating and setting were delightfully different and spoke of a long history, which I found out from the take out lady, was 50 years long. Sixth, I was able to order my food to go- got a great hamburger with all the fixings I wanted, french fries, and a slice of pie. The ladies were most gracious and the food came quite quickly. The next ride I will be taking with my lady love will include a stop at this restaurant... she is going to love it... Great location with nice picnic type benches under the trees, plenty of parking, super friendly people behind the counter and best of all, the food. Amazing salads, burgers, sandwiches and desserts all prepared with lots of love and quality ingredients. Can't wait for Apple season when they really get it going. Good pastrami sandwich and apple pie. Hubby said the peach shake was out of this world. The hamburger with applesauce was unremarkable. This place has very limited hours, so make sure you plan accordingly. There will be a line too, so be prepared to wait. What a wonderful spring day it was when my husband and I went for a drive down Hwy 174 to see all the greenery and sights. We stopped at Happy Apple Kitchen for lunch and we found in our opinions the best burgers in 50 miles around. Sesame buns, charbroiled burger, delicious bacon and fresh tasting veggies all at once! There Apple pie is sweet/tart and flavorful. I liked the pastry crust variety better than the Dutch crumble due to too much cinnamon in the latter for my taste. Tried this place for the first time with some family members. We were impressed! The staff was very friendly and gave great service.The place was not overly crowded or noisey. We ate inside which was quaint and decorated nicely.The food was delicious and the pies on dispay looked delicious but I couldn't eat them all! It was a nice relaxing place with outside dining in the grass area in the shade under the trees with great views.They also had tables in an outside area surrounded by a wall of flowering vines. They have delicious chicken avocado sandwiches, I got pesto on mine because it was the special, but I think without pesto is better. Their peach shakes in July are amazing!!! I could have drank two easy, but I just had one. There are chunks of fresh peaches and the shakes are nice and sweet. The inside dining is a bit crowded, but there is plenty of space outside to eat. Their restrooms are located outside in the back. They also have a fresh produce store out front where you can buy local produce. I got a strawberry rhubarb pie, which I don't normally get, and it was a bit too sweet/tangy for me. I would definitely recommend going here for lunch/dinner or a sweet treat!
