We stopped here two weeks ago for a restroom break. The plan was to finish work first and then eat later. Nope, we had pie first! We shared incredibly fresh, delicious peach pie and French apple with a crumbly top. Our favorite was the peach. My left hand grabbed the top of my head, my right hand clutched the plastic fork, and my soul left my body. We returned the following week, and my husband was happy with his pastrami sandwich and fries. My hamburger was simple and satisfying as well. Our peach milkshakes were the best and made perfectly! The setting is gorgeous, with plenty of trees, shade, and picnic tables in the front and a cozy patio with views of their orchards and potted flowers in the back. The restrooms are small and clean. Service was warm and welcoming. Let's keep supporting this fantastic family-owned business. I plan on visiting again with friends soon.

Delicious little gem around Rollins Lake. Stopped by and everyone was friendly. I tried the Harvest Salad ($15) that had a variety of lettuce, nuts, bell pepper, blue cheese, poppy seed dressing, and grilled chicken. Definitely will be stopping again to try out the pies!

My mom brought me to Happy Apple Kitchen. It's a cute little walk-up restaurant with tons of options to pick from. The lady working was very helpful. I ordered the Apple Milkshake, a Cheeseburger & Fries. And a slice of Apple Pie to go. There's tons of tables and open space (grass) to eat your meal. There's also a patio in the back with tables and chairs. The scenery is beautiful and relaxing. The cheeseburger and fries were absolutely delish!!!! And the Apple Milkshake was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. It's such a a cute, hidden gem. And I can't wait to go back!!!!

In the little ole foothills town of Grass Valley is the Happy Apple Kitchen restaurant. It's a quaint, cozy, homey cafe. Family owned and operated since 1974. Bierwagen family. Step right in, the restaurant has the look and feel of a cozy small house. Complete with an outdoor covered back patio on the east side. The AC in this place was working like a champ on the crazy hot summer afternoon that I popped in. Luv that. The staff are sweethearts. Ooolala... they have homemade pies and peach shakes. The fruit is picked from their very own Orchards. Yes... the family owns an orchard and farm. The gorgeous pies have thick, flaky, substantial, and tasty crust. Perfect to hold the juicy fat fruit pie filling. Luv in their apple pie. Perfect filling to crust ratio. Not overly packed, so no wet soggy crust... no sirree. Not overly sweet either. They have other pie flavors. A slice is about$4, add ala mode fo 75 cents. The slices are humongous. The seasonal peach milkshake is super fresh and has real chunks of peach in it. Peachy keen! Yum! But beware of the pit. When I took a couple of sips, I tasted small grinds of the pit that I spit out. The menu also includes burgers $7-11, sandwiches $7-12, salads $5-15, and kids menu $5.50. They are open Monday- Saturday, 9:30 am-4 pm in Spring-Fall. They close at 3 pm in the Winter. Next door is the farm market building that sells... you guessed it...fresh fruits and vegetables from their orchards or other local farmers. If you are passing by, stop in to check out Happy Apple and while your at it.. the Farm Stand. #happyapplekitchenresturantcolfax #happlespplekitchenpies #farmmarketcolfax

Mrs D had the Corn Cakes, substituted chicken sausage for the hot links with eggs over easy. The Corn Cakes were similar to potato Pan cakes, slightly garlicy with a spicy aioli sauce. Often the waitress will come around to check if all is okay. The waitresses are very well dressed and groomed with personalities to match. 3. The restaurant is very clean with a touch of home environment. What are my favorite meals: Breakfast: Their "Waffle (plain or Belgian), eggs (cooked to your liking), bacon or sausage (patties or links) combo" is awesome. Lunch: They are known for their burgers, fry's and onion rings - the best. The same can be said for their Patty Melt and French Dip sandwiches. Awe heck, all the sandwiches are GREAT! They offer a couple of various flavors of soups daily, all very good, especially their Lobster Bisque when available! YOU KNOW A PLACE HAS TO BE GOOD BY CHECKING OUT THEIR PARKING LOT. We didn't mind as we were relaxing while on vacation and the coffee was smooth and welcoming. Ambiance was nice and trendy. The only sad part to dampen this place was the cooks sour attitude. We welcomed him as he arrived with his cute young boy and he glared at us and refused to respond. We laughed at his very rude, boorishness. However, he had time later to sit with a few local friends and talk at a nearby table. Clearly he's an unhappy person and the owner should know how his poor behavior appears to customers. Not a good blend for a tourist town. We will always remember our stop here and refer to it as the "rude cranky cook". UPDATE: So after some research it appears that the sarcasm noted below is from the owner the "cranky cook" himself. His photo appears on their website as the owner. ‍ Rather than simply apologizing for the behavior or offering an explanation they instead chose sarcasm as well as a private, snarky message to me. This unprofessional attitude speaks volumes about the type of people who own the restaurant. Apparently attacking the Yelp reviewer/customer is acceptable in their world. ‍

Menu is not overwhelming so you know everything should be pretty good. Ordered the Smoldering burger with extra patty, the nut burger, kids plain burger (cheese not included and is extra--didn't add it here) (comes with chips and fountain drink), regular dog with cheese, and 2 order of fries. Came out to Bout $65 tax included. Everything is made to order. You can taste the freshness. The patties on the burger are generous. I mean the kids burger is a 1/4 lb patty. I believe it looks to be the same with the other burgers. Even if I just stuck to a single patty, it would not have felt like the bread was overpowering due to the bacon and other toppings on the burger. The burger was dang good. It looked and tasted like a $15 burger (more like $19 since I added an extra patty for $3.80). Just wish fries were included at this price point. The surprise here is the vegetarian Nut burger. This thing was flavorful. Good mouth feel and satisfying full of flavor. If I was mistakenly given this instead of a real burger I would be ok with it. Some people may not like the texture--as it is nutty, but its not too bad. Fries were fries, but using their house made ketchup for it along with the burger just enhances it. Didn't try the hot dog, but it was finished so I'm assuming it was fine. Only gripe was my smoldering burger seemed to be cooked too much as it started to get on the drier side. Not totally well done, but would have been better just if taken off a little sooner. Maybe the cook just lost track of time on this one. Definitely coming again when in the area!

Since we were in Grass Valley we headed there for lunch. The interior is woodsy and homey, with a country edge. There's a pleasant inside and a really nice outdoor patio area. We opted for indoors as it was a bit cool outside. Seated right away, we got menus, which are EXTENSTIVE, for breakfast and lunch. The omelet section alone is mind boggling. Service was quick, efficient and very friendly. These folks have it down and probably have worked there for awhile. After perusing the menu and getting iced tea, I chose the Long John burger (ordered medium rare) that seemed very tempting and Ed got the Caravan sandwich with Roast Beef. We both ordered a side of the Sweet Potato fries (included!). Expecting a tall juicy burger difficult to get my mouth into it and super messy I was pleasantly surprised to get this very long piece of bread instead. It was much easier to eat and I wasn't slobbering it all over myself. Bravo! The flavor, amount of meat, grilled onions and everything else on the burger was perfectly delicious. Ed's sandwich looked amazing and he really enjoyed it. We both agreed that the grilled onions were absolutely made to perfection and the sweet potato fries some of the best we ever had, especially not soggy or greasy.
