The waiter had an attitude from the beginning and when we asked for extra sauce the owner started yelling at us aggressively, saying why we didn't order everything at once, he continued yelling at us for two minutes and made us so uncomfortable that we decided to leave without eating. I was really excited to find a sushi place in Laguna with such great ratings. Unfortunately, my experience was hardly as pleasant as others. With a group of about 10, we walked to Hapi Sushi to celebrate a friends birthday. After stepping ONLY A SINGLE FOOT IN THE DOOR the "sushi master" looked up and said "We don't serve teriyaki chicken!" I was so taken off guard, but stated "we came here for sushi!" I was so offended because after sitting down and looking at the menu, I realized they don't even serve sushi or ANY raw fish, but instead they only serve rolls. I'm sorry to anyone who thinks that's considered sushi, but it's not!!! The "sushi master" wasn't even a master, he was some Mexican line cook who was incredibly rude to me and my party. I will never go here again, I don't care how good you all think their food tastes. If you want good sushi, walk a block down the street to Sushi Laguna. read more

Yelp needs to make a negative rating possible, because this place is not even worth one star. It was bad from the beginning. The owner wouldn't let us sit at the bar for some reason, and made us sit at a table. And then the waiter comes out and tells us that they will be charging a 15% gratuity fee for 6people. Ok, that's fine. And we ordered 5rolls, explaining that we will be ordering more after, but with the biggest frown on his face, that made all of us uncomfortable, he demanded, yes, demanded that we order more now. That was the cue to just get up and leave, but we decided, hey, we walked all the way here why not just try the food. It only gets worse from here. When we finally got our rolls, the food was pathetic. The spicy tuna roll had NO FISH in like 2 out of the 6 rolls. And the 69 roll had eel on that couldn't even be called eel. They were more like the left over bits and pieces from other food, placed on the rolls. We were so mad that we called the waiter over, who couldn't be found during our meal, doing god knows what. When we showed him the roll without any fish inside, (there was just rice and seaweed), he said that was "normal". What?! Are you kidding me? When we told him that we never saw this kind of roll at any other restaurant, he just told us to go somewhere else. Thank you, that's exactly what we should have done. We decided to talk to the owner who made this ridiculous food in the first place, but he never took us seriously and shrugged it off and told us to talk to the waiter. There was no way we were paying for the gratuity after being treated this way, so we paid for our food, even tipped them, and left. Looking at the other reviews, it seems that not everyone had a horrible experience as we did, which is even more confusing. I went here today to try the sushi since it was the only sushi place open and it was really good and the guy who seemed like he owned the place was really friendly and made sure we were fully satisfied with out food. We had just came back from the beach so luckily there was no one else in there since it was pretty early in the day but it did look like they get pretty good business. We ordered the 79 roll and the tuna crab burrito roll which came to about 10 bux average each ...just to give you and idea on the pricing. read more

Let's just say that Hapi Sushi did not make me happy. It's a really cute joint and has a great vibe to it... small, low key but fun at the same time. I just wasn't that into the food and the service is possibly the worst I've ever experienced, especially given this place is so tiny!! They had one waiter for the whole restaurant and I waited probably 20 minutes before he even got me water. Every time I wanted to order something or ask him for something, I'd have to flag him down with wild flailing of my arms and he would listen with this impatient air and then without really acknowledging the order, just run off. On top of that, the menu doesn't have any prices on it and I'm just not OK with that. What's really the point of a menu without prices. Is everyone really so wealthy that the cost of their food doesn't matter. Well, I am not wealthy and I would have really liked to know how much everything cost without feeling like an idiot by having to ask. Now on to the food: we ordered the baked green muscles, the gyoza, the rainbow roll, the spider roll, #49, #96, and Japanese burrito and I wasn't really satisfied with any of it. The baked green muscles were baked with pure mayonnaise on it which I found really disgusting. And all of the other food and sushi was drenched in vinegar. I've eaten here 3 or 4 times and I absolutely enjoy their sushi. Since it is literally a hole in the wall (Laguna standard of "hole in the wall" means its hard to find-only a small wooden sign says Hapi Sushi) there is no ocean view. The place is verrry intimate-seating around 25-30 ppl. Sometimes there is one and sometimes 2 sushi chefs handleing all the orders (they are nice and talkative). Don't expect teriyaki chicken and udon, their menu consists of special rolls and interesting dishes like sushi burrito. I feel as if the price is very reasonable for what they serve- fresh fish, yummy combinations. After a tasty dinner of sushi a nice walk on PCH (which is not too far) is always nice as well. read more

I love this sushi resturant!!! I save this place for the nights when I really want some goood sushi. It's hidden in the back streets of downtown Laguna Beach and has attracted most of the locals. (Usually a good sign ;) ) The fish they serve is SO fresh, and very light. After I leave I always feel full and satisfied...not over stuffed and crappy. The prices are not shown for the most part..., but the rolls usually cost between $6-$12. The best thing to do is ask the chef what they would eat for lunch, and it's usually the best roll/sushi of the meal! Super friendly, and patient with each customer. They even gave us a free Hapi Sushi shirt with Godzilla on it! So nice! You will walk in and leave with new friends each time you come here! Can't say enough about this place...Just try it! We only had two rolls: 1) The Reverse Rainbow Roll, which was like a California roll but with a variety of fish also jumbled inside. I thought the crab was overly mayonnaise-y and kind of weirdly sweet. 2) The Y2K Special (dated much?) was a vegetable roll with tuna on top. That was pretty good, but a little...I don't know, bland. My family and I have been coming to Laguna Beach for over a decade and have always overlooked this fantastic restaurant. The sushi was stellar, some of the best I've had (the Y2K special and the 97 special were phenomenal), the staff was friendly, and the atmosphere is incredibly unique. The restaurant is decorated in an assortment of unique knickknacks and they play a bunch of old swing music like Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra; I couldn't help but just smile, it's such a great place and I know I'll be coming back soon. read more

Friday night, 7pm, Laguna Beach, people walking in route to their dinner spots. We saw on Yelp this sushi place, it was nearby, so we started walking. My wife then noticed the dreaded 3 1/2 stars, which means this place could go either way. As we passed crowded after crowded food establishments, we came to Hapi and it was empty, except for that lone couple inside among all the empty tables AND the empty sushi bar(say what?). Ok, ok, we still sat down. The waiter brought a cheap laminated menu reminiscent of a happy hour menu except for the prices were typical sushi dinner prices. I asked for a Poki salad. The waiter had this confused look his face as if I was speaking Martian. He said, we don't serve Poki. Seriously?? Any sushi place worth it's price in fish can make Poki! We should have walked out at that point. The spicy tuna hand roll was a fiasco. We ordered it without rice but as a replacement, some simple veggies added to it like most normal sushi places will do. The waiter brought it and it was SMALL, so we sent it back to add some veggies for filler like we asked the first time. By doing so, the price went from $6 to $10! The waiter tried to explain that there was more fish in it which was a complete farce. The crunch hand roll was also very small. Completely ridiculous. Next, the salmon sashimi arrived. Five pieces, cut so thin you could see through it. We ordered the spinach salad, very basic, maybe 14or 15 leaves of spinach with an Asian dressing. We had ordered some ice teas and the typical little bowl of edamame. So there you have it: 2 dinky hand rolls, 2 orders of the chintzy thin salmon sashimi, spinach greens, edamame and ice teas= $50!! Last time I was there was when I was 13 years old, this place was filled with good memories but this time when I went I was surprised by the kind of service we got, the chef told us as we came in that we couldn't order till 20 mins after, we waited when 20 mins passed I told him can we order and he was like " if your hungry go to any other restaurants there is many around here". Hapi Sushi is a great restaurant. It looks like a dive and the wait staff doesn't like to make small talk (or talk at all really), but as long as you order off the menu and don't try to make conversation, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what a "hole in the wall" can produce. Their sushi is amazing and even if you don't like sushi or "really have to be in the mood" to eat it, being at Hapi will instantly put you in the mood. Guaranteed. It is a very small place, but the food is incredible and on most nights, they will stay open until you are full (yes, even until 2 a.m.) There are no posted hours though, so make sure you come in at a reasonable time. Oh yeah, and turn your cell phone off. There is a $1 charge for each time your cell phone goes off (this means vibrate too) and they mean it! Overall, delicious! read more
