I haven't had a single burrito in almost 10 years but this pregnancy had me craving for some, so after hubby and I enjoyed our date at Laguna Beach, he found this place for us and it did not disappoint. Usually, I'd expect burritos to feel heavy after eating, but this one was full of shrimp & steak (surf & turf - my fav) with cheese & cabbage instead of rice & beans. Some may prefer the rice, beans, and cheese combo in their burritos, but I much prefer the protein-heavy, and veggies forward type of burrito that the taco stand serves. I split the burrito with my hubby thinking it was big, which I borderline regretted after taking a bite, because I'll need my own next time. It's just that good... & feels light on the tummy :) Service was no frills, and glad they have their own parking lot. Ambiance is super chill.. not an actual taco stand but there are plenty of seats both inside and outside the restaurant. Only one bathroom for all customers so that's not exactly the best for a pregnant woman like myself, but the burrito makes up for that too! Unfortunately, The Taco Stand missed the mark this time. I'll still give them a second chance later because our visit was at 9pm on a busy night. We ordered two mushroom tacos. One arrived with mushrooms and avocado; the other had mushrooms only. And somehow, neither one had the grilled onions. ‍ Then came the real test: we ordered a pescado burrito, but asked them to hold the meat (meaning the fish), hold the cheese, and add beans. Three simple requests. Can you guess how many were actually fulfilled? If you guessed one, congratulations--you understand the assignment. The kicker? The cashier entered our requests correctly on the receipt. So somewhere between the cashier and the kitchen, our modifications apparently took a wrong turn. If you have dietary restrictions or food allergies, I'd definitely double-check your order before digging in. You may want to verify it twice--or, at this rate, come back in a year when they've had time to work out the kinks. A few other things: * The grooved metal menu makes it surprisingly difficult to read. * The line was long but moved quickly. * Once ordered, the food took about 30-45 minutes. * The small patio's trash can was overflowing, which didn't exactly add to the dining experience. Excruciating long wait but kind of due to small kitchen and that they hand make and press their tortillas from scratch. Its quite cute from the outside, but don't expect seating on the inside as its quite busy. They have a small salsa bar with some salsas that I dont usually see at other taquerias, but it only fits one person and id recommend opting for the bottle drinks. The ordering process is fast and menu simple, the tacos are on the pricier side, so a burrito might be more worth. Casual dining where u order and fight for a seat haha, turnover is not that great due to long times and families tend to come here. However, expect a super long wait for your order to be made and order everything in one go (but they do try their best to push out the orders; I assume the other locations are less busy d/t the area maybe not having much casual cheaper heavier foods. The carne asada is particularly special here as I found the meat was really tender and its nice to have a made from scratch corn tortilla (but they only give one). Flavor wise, not too strong, but the steak meat is good. I didnt find the special one with cheese to add much as the cheese was a bit small and not too flavorful. Another hidden gem was the churros, I like it better than the store in the mexican place in costa mesa. They were breadier/chewy and had a nice flavor, plus came with a condensed milk sauce. One portion is like 3 churros for $4. Basically they need to find a way to.make the cooking process more efficient like maybe pre pressing/cooking tortillas and keeping warm? I've been to a different location before (La Jolla) and I think this location wasn't as good. I'm not sure what the difference was but the tacos weren't as flavorful especially when it came to the Carne Asada. At the La Jolla location you can see the staff making the tortillas + churros and this location the tortillas were packaged. I'm not sure if they use the same ingredients but this could have changed the flavor profile. They were still yummy don't get me wrong but they just weren't as good as I remember them. I ordered chips and guac as well and the staff forgot to include it in my order so I had to go up to the counter another time which was quite a hassle given it's a very busy restaurant with the line out the door the entire time I was there. The salsa selection is rather nice especially when most restaurants are trying to cut down on salsa options + use the lower quality ingredients. You can tell the ingredients in the salsas were high + they even have a few creamy options which is hard to see at most Mexican restaurants these days. I do think the guac was a little limey but it wasn't bad when you added it to the tacos. If you go I would recommend you go with zero expectations of eating inside as there are about 5-6 tables + waiting a long time for your food. We went to this taco stand last night and had a very disappointing experience. The area where the salsa is served was dirty and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a long time. We ordered two chicken tacos to take home, and when we opened them, the chicken was cold and there were only about two small pieces of meat in each taco. The quality and portion sizes were unacceptable. When we returned to address the issue, the response from the employee was that there were two pieces of chicken inside. Instead of trying to resolve the problem or provide good customer service, we were basically dismissed. Their Cali burrito, which consists of your choice of meat along with guacamole, fires, and normal burrito fixins, it always hits the spot. Be prepared to grip this burrito with 2 hands cuz it's big & heavy! For light eaters, definitely can share. AND, for only $10.81...I know, odd price, you get so much bang for the dollar, which is hard to find now when an $18 burrito is common place. The sauce bar offers cilantro sauce, which is creamy and my favorite, a chipotle sauce, and pickled onions & jalepenos. The Laguna Beach location has a small parking lot, and there's a good amount of both indoor and outdoor seating. It's not the cleanest seating area, but it gets the job done. The prices are very fair, especially for the area. We ordered the Pescado burrito and the California burrito. My husband enjoyed his California burrito, but I was quite disappointed in my Pescado burrito. There was fish at the top and bottom of the burrito, but the entire middle was full of cabbage. Additionally, all of the sauce sunk to the bottom, so it was pretty tasteless until I was almost done eating it. They really need to distribute the fillings better throughout the burrito. I was staying at a nearby hotel. As a convenience, I decided to give "The Taco Stand" a try. I ordered the carne asada burrito. This was my first experience with brand, so I ordered it without customization. Per the menu description, it's "flame grilled angus steak (angus beef), guacamole, beans, tomato and salsa". It cost a little under $10.50. Per their website, The Taco Stand is a small chain of restaurants, with 16 locations scattered across the United States (CA, NV, TX & FL). I think this helps explain the taste. The positive is the steak was very good. It was marinated well; it was tender, while still providing a nice chewing experience. Otherwise, the burrito's overall taste was mild--almost bland. I suspect because they operate in different markets, they are trying to appeal to the greatest common denominator. Their salsa bar allows the diner to ultimately determine the taste. In California, we have access to so many styles of Mexican cooking. The Taco Stand's taste profile (for the burrito) isn't particularly distinct; but it is a safe choice, especially if you do not like strong flavors, or if spicy food irritates your stomach. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor dining. The indoor dining is nice; the outdoor dining is nice, too. The only share I have about outdoor dining here is that the restaurant sits at an intersection, with a signal light. There are people who cruise PCH on motorcycles with loud exhausts. If you dislike this sort of noise pollution, eat inside. read more
