    Asia de Philly Roll
    Grace S.

Always great service, always good quality food! Today I met a friend for lunch and we ate small bites. We had the pork buns, Korean tacos, (which I did not get a picture of) and a Philadelphia roll. Our server was welcoming, friendly, and gave us quick service! I made a reservation for a table outdoors, but it was a bit chilly so we sat inside where it's dark and moody and intimate enough. We chose the high booth by the bar, which were very comfortable! The pork buns were absolutely delicious. The buns were nice and soft, and the pork inside was tender and juicy. The Korean tacos were served on small corn tortillas and the meat was very tender and quite tasty with a little bit of a kick. The Philadelphia roll was tasty, but not my favorite! I'm never disappointed at Starfish!

Now after a day for business out in sunny California. I figured I'd have a bite in Laguna Beach... This is a for sure spot to eat I while in Laguna. Easy parking. Great location and parking. Even close to the beach where after eating, you could take a walk. The service was fair. Smiles and quick. Delicious food. No complaints from this review. But if you're in a mood for a bite and a drink. Check out Starfish! Thank you Starfish! I had a pleasant experience....

Great spot, especially during happy hour! They have a lot of their best items on the happy hour menu rather than the random items that don't get picked. The waiter was extremely nice and even when I didn't quite enjoy the sushi, he took it off the bill without hesitation or me having to ask. Very cute place loved going after a day on the beach.

    Shrimp and chicken Wonton Soup
    Julie S.

I was really excited to try out this place because I've heard good things about it from other people. However, the main reasoning for my low rating is due to the food. I ordered the shrimp and chicken wonton soup, and I was not impressed. Although this place is labeled as Asian Fusion, I would have hoped that their food would still make the effort to respect the authentic versions of the dishes they serve. 1. There was so much spinach. Most wonton soups are served with baby bok choy, but spinach has a different taste and texture so I wouldn't overdo it. 2. There were also so many slices of water chestnuts like they were carrot slices. I just thought it was odd because I was expecting water chestnuts to be added into the filling of the wontons rather than a handful of cut slices in the soup. 3. The shrimp was hard to bite into so they were overcooked. There were also free pieces of white chicken meat in the soup, which I wasn't expecting either. I had assumed all the shrimp and chicken would be minced together to be placed in the wonton. 4. The chicken broth tasted off. I'm not sure really what it was if it was lack of ginger and garlic but it just wasn't as flavorful as I hoped. Service was okay, my waiter was nice and attentive. Inside the restaurant has a nice dim light environment so it just felt very calm to have a meal across the beach. I'm willing to come back if someone invited me and hope that other dishes wouldn't disappoint as much.

Starfish has one of the best options for this year's Orange County Restaurant Week, especially if you use InKind, too. It did not disappoint! They still serve full portions, and they also have broad options. Small Plates - Banh Mi Sliders 4.5/5 The patties were great, with the right amount of grilled flavor and the pickled vegetables were not overpowering. This was one of those simpler dishes that was prepared very, very well. - Crispy Chicken Spring Rolls 4/5 They were just fried with a great crunch, but the ingredients still felt fresh. The sweet and sour had almost a ginger kick to it. Large Plates - Cambodian Black Pepper Fillet 5/5 The filet was incredibly tender and there was a generous serving. The vegetables added a good, fresh crunch. (The table next to us ordered it and as soon and we smelled it, we knew we had to try it, too.) It is well worth the mark up. - Mongolian Beef 3.5/5 This dish has potentional, because the beef was tender and the flavor profile of the dish was great. However, the asparagus was thin and had a chew to it, and the snow peas were stringy. Dessert - Flourless Chocolate Cake 3.5/5. The texture was amazing, but the flavors felt muted, especially the berry puree. Drinks - Enlightenment 4.5/5 It was so refreshing, yet effective, with the right hint of sweetness - Lagniappe Margarita 4/5 Strong but well balanced flavors The lighting was dim, but it is still inviting. It was great for conversations, even with the tables being pretty close together. The kitchen and bar were both backed up, but the staff was aware and communicated it well. They also apologized as each dish was served, but it was all hot and freshly prepared, so we were not complaining.

I really wanted to like this place they have Rombauer Chardonnay which is great not too many places have it on the menu. First of all their menu is HUGE like Cheesecake Factory which I don't appreciate. Everything has sugar very very sweet. Too many things going on when you taste the flavor profile of their dishes. Unfortunately for me is a NO.

Kia was great very attentive . We ordered the spicy tuna roll, definitely had a kick to it . Tempura rolls was ok, nothing special . The crab wonton was crab forward . The whiskey blossom was very delicious, smooth and tasty . My lychee drink was to heavy on the lychee, i guess I don't really like lychee . I would choose a different drink next. Only a couple issues the crispy chicken spring Roll was a little dry, I would suggest cutting it in smaller pieces and adding a different dipping sauce ( I added a side of wonton sauce , tasted like sweet and sour ) . Another issue I was swatting gnats away from my food which was annoying .

Excellent selection the food was tasty. The drinks were creative.. We especially liked the coconut vodka, strawberry muddled drink with basil and the ginger martini was also nice. We had great service from Kaylee. She was very informative and helpful helpful suggestions. Lobster macadamia roll was delicious and unique. Wasn't a big fan of the cucumber salad we liked in Thai Phung's much more. It's more refreshing with the rice vinegar. The seafood and the seafood curry was cooked to Perfection and the flavor was great. The coconut rice was a nice twist. We look forward to coming back some day to try the Mongolian beef. Pleasant but dark ambience with Asian decor.

We went during "Opium Hour" basically their happy hour. We ordered exclusively off that menu and put together a good meal for under $150 with cocktails. It is daily from 3-6. The service was quick and the cocktails were tasty. We went on a Saturday evening and took advantage of the beautiful scenery across the street that overlooks the ocean. The sushi was the highlight of the food, with the California roll being the table favorite with the sides of Wasabi and Ginger. The Bahn Mi slider was also really good but tasted more like a burger than what you would expect from a traditional Bahn Mi in Vietnam. That one in particular really puts the fusion in Asian-fusion.

I was totally satisfied while here. Everything I ate was a five. They have an Happy Hour from 3 to 6 and if I lived here, I would never miss it. The ribs were cooked perfect. This was the best chicken lettuce wraps I ever had. The waiter was extremely patient and walked me through the menu. Is not a huge restaurant but the perfect size. Very cute outdoor seating. When I come to visit again this will be my first stop to eat.

Came here shortly after my engagement, and there was quite a bit of a wait, about 15-20 min despite the place not looking very crowded. Once we sat down, the service was pretty good, and they helped us take some pictures. The actual food was ok. Had the calamari rings which were not bad, wish the breading was thinner and crispier. Great sauces on the side though. The rolls also were acceptable. The sunset roll was probably the best one as it had the most fish, but was also drizzled in sauce as was every single roll that we ordered. Many had too much sauce and was monotonous. It's nice that some of them included avocado to mix up the texture and flavor, but not all had it. The meal ended with a chocolate cake which was a very nice engagement gift I appreciate from the staff. Again very good service here!

blown away once again! I celebrated my birthday at starfish and was so pleased with my delicious go-tos, highlight of the meal was definitely the Vietnamese rolls it's a must try! service was wonderful and the desserts were very unique, the banana in filo dough had great presentation and it was delicious!

There is a sign on the building when you're driving off PCH but I've never noticed it. This will have to be our new go to restaurant when we are Laguna. It's close to the beach, delicious and honestly affordable for the quality of the fish you're getting. It's comparable to the omakase sushi we had in Seattle. We haven't found anything in CA that comes close to it till we tried this spot. It's not AYCE but honestly we can't even eat that much anymore, and the amount we order made is full but not like bloated. Fish was so fresh and flavorful. We asked for a refil of ginger then we notice a group of servers and workers watching the World Cup game with another customer. About 20 mins go by I had to ask another server for ginger ... not ideal. First came out 6 sashimi pieces Very lean pieces was lacking flavor (felt like I bought grocery market fish ) Then came some nigiri The rice was the lowest quality and driest rice ive had at a sushi restaurant. As I was picking up each nigiri individual rice was falling out and the texture ruined the experience. Most of the nigiri had "lava salt" at this point that's all I tasted. Then came the pressed sushi which seemed like a slice of salmon smothered in their dry rice like hamburger buns and topped with seared salmon. We had to take the salmon and out and discard the rice. Handroll was a bluefin one I believed. Took a bite into it and the seaweed paper was stale and wet which made it incredible chewy. We also ordered a bottle of sake Overall very low quality fish and service.

We walked in and the hostess was nice enough to seat us right away although we didn't have a reservation + we were only allotted 1 hour and 30 minutes prior to their next reservation which was doable for us. We ordered a few rolls and to be completely honest they were just weird. One roll had fish eggs on top (which can be normal for sushi) but it did not pair well with the flavor profile of the roll. The chicken karaage was definitely just slightly breaded and tasted very bland although it can be very tasty + juicy at other restaurants I've been to. The only thing I loved out of everything we ordered was the sauce that came with the shrimp tempura- it was savory plus creamy. I almost wanted to have the sauce with the chicken! According to the server, this restaurant makes the majority of their items in house. Could possibly be the reason why everything wasn't the best. The restaurant is a little pricey as well!

Message me if you are curious about the details. Happy to share with anyone." Now the owner is claiming my review is "false" and says he's taking legal action. He told me I need to read their "policy." I'm sorry--but I go to a restaurant for the food and experience, not to study policies. He also accused me of making people uncomfortable because I tried to take a picture of my boyfriend on his birthday. The whole time I was there, I already felt like I was walking on thin ice--and now it's very clear why. Chef Miki Izumisawa is the only female sushi chef I know of to this day, and still consider her one of my heroes. She is an artist at heart, getting inspiration from nature to create unique nigiri, cut rolls and hand rolls. She has trained more female sushi chefs to execute her masterpieces, and it's really awesome to see these bad ass women challenging Japanese gender norms! Traditional nigiri run about $7, whereas, fusion nigiri are priced around $8, so I suggest trying fusion pieces, which are thoughtfully crafted with house-made sauces and flavorful garnishes. I recently came with four friends around 5pm and was graciously seated outside. We each ordered the Sexy Hand Roll and a cut roll to share and that seemed to be enough. We also tried the Toro Fusion nigiri, Tuna Fusion nigiri with spicy miso and chili paste as well as a recommended appetizer of seared albacore and a delicious gingery, garlicky sauce. Each bite of everything had umami, texture, fragrance, and beauty, playing with all our senses. The restaurant is teeny tiny, and only open from 4:30-8:30pm, so I recommend arriving when they open or make a reservation 24 hours in advance. Note that they only take reservations at 5pm though. Street parking is metered and a bit pricey and challenging being close to Main Laguna, but so worth the hassle!

Food was yummy too. My girls had the teriyaki chicken and California roll, both yummy. The chicken teriyaki was surprisingly yummy. The Salmon Garlic Ponzu wasn't my favorite, but it's because I love a really good Salmon. However! The Bluefin Tuna w/ Crispy Onion was good. The crispy onion is thicker than you think, which makes excellent for the batter to catch. The specialty rolls: Red Dragon Roll w/Crispy Onion & Seared Yellowtail Roll was really good, again the crispy and onion was a nice crunch touch. Dessert, they have mochi ice cream, which is very familiar to the brand Mikawaya. 1, serving is 2 small size mochi ice cream, cut in half, so 4 half cut pieces. We enjoyed my husbands birthday, while at the same time hoping ours kids keep it together. And we got lucky this round! Great birthday dinner for my hubs. Thank you, O Fine Japanese Cuisine!

You ideally want somewhere more quiet, intimate, and low-key, since you aren't dressed up for a "Nobu" style dining experience. You do a quick Yelp search and find that Hapi sushi is conveniently located in downtown Laguna Beach and looks to have the exact ambiance that you're searching for. You plug the address into Google Maps, and keep your fingers crossed that they'll have a table open late on a Friday night! Fortunately, they had a table available, and my boyfriend and I were able to be seated right away! The restaurant is very intimate with dark lighting, and would make for the perfect romantic date night spot. The sushi bar was packed and they had small tables with chair seating on one side and booth seating on the other side. We both sat on the booth as to not impede the narrow aisle between the booth and sushi bar, and enjoyed watching the sushi chef work his magic and create fresh rolls from time to time. We had eaten dinner a couple hours ago, and just wanted something to satisfy the craving. We ordered the Chirashi bowl (off menu) and it came packed with fresh sashimi on top of a bed of sushi rice. We enjoyed the cozy interior and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the meal. This felt like a "neighborhood" sushi spot, and we would definitely return should we be strolling through Laguna Beach in need of a sushi restaurant again. As a side note, this is right in downtown Laguna Beach, so parking could be quite difficult! Be prepared to walk if planning to come on the weekend or for dinner on weekdays!

You're basically just going through the motions, my friend. We paired it with their ice cream fudge sundae, and we could not have been happier with our decision. The moment that warm butter cake hits the table, pure joy consumes your soul. Anticipation builds like you're about to open the best gift ever. The only logical response is to grab a spoon (yes, a spoon because a for would be a travesty of a mistake) because you need the perfect ratio of buttery cake, berry compote, and ice cream in every single bite. You carve that first perfect scoop, lift it toward your mouth, and suddenly your taste buds are doing an Olympic-level gymnastics routine--sticking the landing with a gold medal performance. It's a holy, almost spiritual experience you desperately hope never ends. By the final bite, you're slumped back in your seat, practically begging for a belly rub like a satisfied golden retriever, whispering a quiet prayer that this isn't the last time you'll experience this life-changing dessert. Ps. The service is amazing and the vibe is perfect for a date, a night with friends, or a celebration.

I always go for the ribeye melt or the French dip (order while it lasts). Both are absolutely to die for. The au jus is drinkable, and I could eat the Worcester sauce with a spoon. Next up, the butter cake. Oh my god, this thing is to die for. Although we're always stuffed after our well portioned entrees, we never ever leave without ordering it. The cake is rich and crumbly. And the compote complements it perfectly, although I always wish there was more. The little mint leaves are also a wonderful bit of added flavor. If you go for the sides, I would highly recommend the potato salad. It's slightly more acidic than most, and it has little bits of bacon, which give you little bites of smokeyness. The one time I didn't order the potato salad, I got the blue cheese and tomatoes instead. It was more of an underwhelming side because it was - you guessed it- just blue cheese and tomatoes. Probably a little bit of an interpretation mistake on my part... Overall, you can get an incredible entre for around $18. This is very competitive with other restaurants even outside Laguna Beach. Delicious food, and great value for your dollar.
