Hansen is a very well known, OG winery in the Paso area. Practically every winery knows of them, for a good reason. Owner is known to be quite the character and his tastings are a real experience. It's a lot of wine. Good quality wine. And free too (not kidding). We made a reservation at 11 am on a Fri and were the only ones there the entire time. We brought our lunch to eat during the tasting. The tasting was 14 different wines, cab sauvignon and cab francs only. That is what he specializes in. But in total we had over 20 pours as he insisted we taste the wines in different order, side by side, etc. We also revisited some. The owner did the entire tasting while another employee assisted. We became a club member and left with a case of wine. Wines are not cheap ($75+ regular price), but high quality ones never are. FYI, Cab House and Hansen are the same place. Nothing to see on the property, it's just a tasting room. Dog friendly. It's a must go for bold red wine lovers, but don't line up too many other wineries on the same day. My medical director recommended this place to us if you like bold/heavy reds. Which sounds like a great place for my bf and I. We came here during Covid November 2020 and had a pleasant time in the original tasting room. At that time it was just Bruce and Pat. Bruce is great, and as you make more conversation, he just goes down the list pours and revisits different wines. You definitely should eat before you come here or bring your own snacks and water. We enjoyed our tasting so much that we joined the wine club and have been members to date. We visited again last year to see the new tasting room And see Bruce, considering he is getting older and getting quite ill from cancer. The new tasting room is massive. But our visit was just like our first and we enjoyed ourselves. All in all, we continue to keep our wine membership for our 2 4bottle shipments a year? And free tastings every time we pass through town. Bruce is getting older and ill, so I understand and can empathize that maybe his manners and customer service isn't quite where it should be or where it used to be, but I have patience and an open mind as a health care provider. Amazing cabs, and plenty of them! A tasting usually consists of around 10 open cabs, and they're all delicious! It's hard to decide which to bring home, so we joined their wine club to make sure we get a chance to keep enjoying. Bruce is such a character. Tasting room is located on a 30 acre vineyard. Has room for about 40 people at full capacity. Decorations are minimal and relatively plain inside. Some mild landscaping outside. 3/5 Parking: Not a lot of parking and not well designated. Room for about 10-15 cars at max it seems. 2/5 Staff: Staff is relatively minimal. Typically one server and the owner. Our server was nice enough, but this is the biggest problem with the winery (outside of the wine itself)...the owner. Wow. No one will ever accuse him of having a timid personality. If you look at many reviews you will see that most love him or hate him. He is clearly very proud of his wine and wants to share his creations with you. But he is very forceful in that you must love his creations or he gets offended. Also, on my visit he was at least two sheets to the wind and I got the impression this is normal. He made our visit a bit uncomfortable overall. 1/5 Wine: There are only two varietals served. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. There is no tasting menu, just a wine list. And you get to try them all...all 19 or so of them. Yeah, they bring you a lot of wine. All of the wine though is grown on the 30 acres and the only real variation is the addition of french oak barrels and different aging of the wine in each. The problem is that the base Cabernet used isn't very good, dunno maybe it's the soil. Very clearly the owner is trying to perfect something he likes, but if you don't like his first offering you won't like any of the offerings after because they are all slight variations of the same. I love Cabernet Sauvignon and that's why I went here...but it's just not very good. 1/5 Price: I think the cheapest bottle he sells is about $60ish and the most expensive about $95ish. It's always tough for me to do a winery review. I leave all the wine notes to those who have exceptional palates. But, this was a new winery for Mr. B, and it seems it surpassed his expectations. So, Mr. B joined yet another wine club. Guess it was too good to step away. Plenty of awards and medals adorned their displays. And even I loved the wine. The 2010 Marquis Zin, 2009 Limited Release Cab, and 2010 Reserve Cab were all exceptional. I guess for a relatively non-wine drinker, I have discovered one of my passions is for Zin. And Hansen's really got me started in the right direction. Meanwhile, I am less of a socialite than Mr. B. So I left him sipping and schmoozing, he does that well, while Lilly-pup and I spent time enjoying the view of the vineyard, walking through the charming winterized herb and rose garden, and socializing with the winery dog. More my speed. Something for everybody. This is a small boutique winery, a fun little getaway, with humble excellence and gracious, welcoming vibes. read more

This is my husband's favorite winery. While we were up visiting our friends in SLO, we decided we'd go wine tasting. Since my husband was so excited about Hansen, we had to stop here. The look on his face as he arrived was like Christmas came early. I'm pretty sure I've got wifey points to last. When we arrived on a Saturday at 2ish, there were no people other than the owners and the people who worked there. This proved to be interesting. I should've known if my hubby loved this place, it was cab heavy. I can't do cabs because there's some enzyme in them that gives me an instant headache, no matter how expensive and wonderful the winery. I abstained from all cabs for this reason. So I tasted the zinfandels. They don't have buckets to dump wines. Let's be honest, wine drinkers are in a couple of camps: actually taste and dump or drink it no matter how badly you hate it because it's wine. I only tasted the zin's but it would be nice if they maybe swished your glass with some water to clean it out between pours. Whatever, the girl gave me chips and wine without charging me. I was ok with that. The very cool thing was the owner, Bruce, took us back behind the scenes. This was the funnest experience. We were invited to taste out of never opened barrels and metal barrels. We were able to see how they lifted wine barrels, how they destemmed grapes and all that fun stuff. Bruce kept asking us girls to taste the grapes, to pose with everyone and generally have fun. We hung out for a couple of hours and had a blast. The entire experience felt VIP and for that reason, I'm giving it 5 stars. I'm more of a girl who enjoys the Napa wines, but you will get a personalized and very awesome experience here. People. You have no idea what you are missing. Bruce is what I would call a hospitable curmudgeon. If you are not a serious RED wine drinker, do not stop here. If fact if you are not a SERIOUS Cabernet Sauvignon drinker, do not stop here. If you have never spent over $50 on a Cab, do not stop here. You are wasting his time and your time, too. Bruce now ONLY makes Cabs. Bruce Hansen has the best, the best, the best Cab in the land. Cab like you would want all your Cabs to taste. Pricey - far less than highly touted Napa and Sonoma Cabs which are inferior to Hansen. Bruce has had multiple blind tasting events over the years and his Cabs always beat Napa and Sonoma Cabs. The bonus is the bumbling show that Bruce performs when pouring. Bruce has asked people to leave his tasting room JUST FOR ASKING WHERE IS THE DUMP BUCKET. THERE IS NO DUMP BUCKET. We saw him toss out two Midwest couples who wanted to drink sweet white wine and made faces when drinking red wine for probably their first time. We tasted 8 Cabs during one tasting with a revisit of each of them. This is a NORMAL tasting at Hansen. Then Bruce invited us back to the barrel room for a tasting of four barrels of one vintage. Each barrel had a distinctive difference in type of wood and processing the staves had gone through. On a later occasion, we accepted Bruce's invitation for barrel tasting and I must say after three hours of tasting Cabs, I could still distinguish between 6 vintages. 14 barrels were sampled. I can't believe I am only the second person to review Hansen! This winery is unbelievable! Joined the club after the first tasting of Cabs! Bruce is the "Mad Scientist" of wine making. This place really blows away all the wineries in the region. (Not to say Hansen is the only good winery in the Central Coast) This region is amazing and many of the wineries have definitely caught the attention of connoisseurs. Don't go if you are looking for fancy Napa-style ambiance! Go because you love big cabs! This was one of our favorite all-time tastings, and we have done hundreds all over CA. The owner Bruce is 100% authentic old-school guy who loves cabs and has been doing it all for years, from planting, harvesting, crushing, blending, aging, bottling and pouring it in the tasting room. We first met him 15 years ago, we wandered in somewhat accidentally, and he climbed off his tractor in muddy overalls to serve us. But the spark in his eyes when he described the wine was 100% the real thing. The wine was amazing, exactly what we were looking for: a big, complex, rolling sensation through deep fruit, herbs, wood, leather with a softly structured finish that lingered long after the first swallow. He shared a ton of history, his own and that of the wine. We were smitten, but a little too young and poor to join the club. I remembered that taste specifically and many years and many tastings passed. We went through Paso Robles again a number of times, but their hours never worked for us and we didn't manage to visit again until last weekend. And wow, there it was, like meeting an old flame again, and finding them better than ever! Wondering what took us so long. Club members now, probably forever! read more

Worst winery ever! In all my years of wine tasting I've never been talked to the way BRUCE spoke to me and our group. His wine is lacking to put it nicely, but God forbid you ask him for a dump bucket.....I was told "we don't have one you have to drink it", my husband got up and dumped his outside. Bruce proceeded to be condescending and disrespectful with every pour of his awful wine. Bruce also speaks to women as if beneath him. He wears his feelings on his sleeve and takes it personally if the wine does not suit your pallet. It appears the plan at this winery is to over pour his guests and get them buzzed in order buy his wine. Ironic the membership form states You must take 2 shipments prior to canceling. Leads me to believe many people get home with this wine and wonder what the heck did we buy. Looking for a stylishly glitzy tasting room with wines for everyday drinking? Keep on driving. Want a long parade of excellent cabernet sauvignon served by a cantankerous old coot ala Lonesome Dove who might cut off your tasting for being disruptive like the soup Nazi in "Seinfeld"? You've found your heaven at Hansen. With the character of a gnarly old vine Paso zin plant (and probably not much different in age), the curmudgeonly raconteur winemaker makes it clear who's running the show along with being a show. Riding in on an ATV from the fields at the moment he spots arriving visitors (like crotchety Rooster Cogburn on a horse but without the gunfire), both his unpredictable rambunctious personality and his wines present a wonderful show. Noted for their immense size, I normally find cabs difficult to drink (Ubers are even harder to swallow) because they are too harshly bold to drink alone and too overpowering to eat with food. I don't even like to drink cab with steak because the wine fights the steak - opting for the softer Bordeaux sibling merlot or a rounder big Italian red. Hansen's cabs were never tannicly bitter, mouth-puckering dry, and never concealed flaws with too much sweetness like so many wines. Basically, the wines were ideally balanced which let the flavors of the grape and soil effortlessly appear. Because the entire series of cabs was easy to drink, it was hard to stop. This either means these cabs are a bastardization of a true cab or what a cab should really be. Regardless of what is technically and traditionally correct, my pinot loving palate loved Hansen's cabs. The tasting fee was $10 for eight wines - all cabs around $80. The fee is waived with one bottle purchased. The tasting room is at the end of a short dirt road. Because I haven't made enough pop culture references (not!), the long blonde-haired teen pop trio doesn't own this place. "MMMbop" doesn't pair well with fine red wine (or much of anything else). read more

Bruce is quite a character! We asked if we could share a tasting and he smiled and shook his head no. Then the couple next to us asked about dumping what wine they didn't drink and Bruce (again with a smile) said no dumping. He was determined to get us all drunk on his Cabs and boy did he ever! And wow, everything we tried was spectacular; definitely our favorite of the 5 wineries we tried today. I signed up for the club right there as everything was so great. And his Zin was awesome too. This is a hidden gem in Paso Robles if not the state of California. I know this is a bold statement. But just go out and try the wines. You'll be greeted by Bruce Hansen, who has been making Paso Cabs for a long time and that's all he makes. His cabs are amazing as well as the stories he relates to you. He will sit there with you and try every wine he pours. You can tell by his personality, he loves the Paso wine region and has nothing but great things to say about each and every winery. I'm in the wine industry myself and was just simply blown away by his cabs. If you visit his winery just remember one thing, you won't be visiting any other winery. Awesome wine club event on Nov 19, the Cab Challenge for 2007 wines. We were a bit late starting as Bruce was delayed in the tasting room, but that was quickly forgotten when the wines were poured, Napa wines Caymus, Beringer Private Reserve, Mondavi Reserve, a Hansen's Limited, a Hansen's Reserve and a mystery wine in a corked screwtop bottle. I can not believe that I am the first to review this Winery. It is located in Templeton / Paso Robles. We loved their wines so I am torn between keeping it a secret and doing a reveiw. They make one white wine, Voingier which is very crisp and refreshing. When we were there they served some in a sno-cone, great on a hot afternoon. But Hansen wines are really about the Reds. - They make several Cabernets, regular bottlings, and then some special or reserved wines. The wines have such great fruit. They also have Syrah, Zin "marquis" and last year a Cab Franc. They are very friendly and very knowlegble about what they are pouring. Just one sip and will want to join the club. read more

I have to say I was surprised when reading the other reviews on this winery and Bruce. I am not sure why our experience was so different, although Bruce did say that he woke up "grumpy". We will never return. Bruce was not kind to us and actually condescending. He did not explain his wines to us and it was obvious he just wanted us to leave so he could start his party at 5 pm. Ambiance was un-inviting as were the staff offering tastings. They boasted superiority over neighboring vineyards, not even offering a vessel to dump wines, however their wines were less than exciting verging on vinegary and unpalatable. We spent over an hour here with Bruce, the owner and winemaker, sampling Cabs from different vintages as well as some of his more recent experiments including the Barrel Select (4-years in oak) and 3-Barrel that had just been recently bottled. The wines were amazing and the experience is one that I won't soon forget. I made it a point of this trip to Paso to focus on the more intimate wineries, and I am glad that I made the trek East to Hansen. The wine club is a bargain, and I'm looking forward to that bottle of '04 that we couldn't leave without.
