They must have misunderstood because they told me they put down plywood. Nope. They drove it through my neighbor's yard and my yard after heavy rains leaving deep tracks, then they dug a foot into my patio. When they uncovered the cesspit it was already 3/4 full. So here's me thinking surely my bill will be lower, right? There was a quote for materials and labor. Less materials were needed to fill the hole. Less labor. Nope. Bill arrives for $5100. They also say they will put down grass seed, and that never happened either. Companies like Specialty Heating & Cooling are contributing to this problem with pricing practices that, in my view, take advantage of customers. Last week, I noticed an unusual noise coming from our furnace. I had a good idea of what it might be, as I dealt with the same issue when we lived in a different home. I called Specialty Heating & Cooling and scheduled an appointment. The technician arrived on time, and within five minutes, the diagnostics confirmed exactly what I suspected. That's when I was told there was a $189 diagnostic fee--something no one had mentioned when I scheduled the visit. I paid it, but I made it clear that this had not been disclosed. The technician said he would call after the Thanksgiving weekend with a repair estimate. On Monday, he contacted me and asked for my email. When I requested the total cost of the repair, the quote was $1,186.43. I asked for an explanation of how they justified charging nearly $1,200 for a part that retails for about $142, installs with three screws, and takes less than 30 minutes to replace. Unfortunately, no clear explanation was provided. If their quote had been anywhere near reasonable--say, up to $500--I would have approved the repair immediately. I spent a total of 15 minutes removing and reinstalling that part. The entire process required removing and replacing only three 1/4-inch screws. Given how quick and simple the job was, I'm struggling to understand why the charge was so high. This level of work does not justify the price that I was quoted. They then came down a bit from that but in my opinion the quote is still crazy high for "about an hour... easy " work, particularly as I am an ongoing customer in an open project. I completely understand I would expect to pay for additional work out of original scope, but seriously? Such a high quote for an hour for what reportedly is a simple job for the plumber? Seems very unreasonable to me. They've now lost a customer and left sourness in the wake. It's a shame. I've learned my lesson.
