    Cottage #10
    Alexandra S.

I've gone back and forth as to whether to allocate 2 or 3 stars. I've thought hard about the descriptor for two stars: "meh, I've experienced better" versus the descriptor for 3 stars: "A-OK". There are some aspects of both those experiences so read this as 2.5 stars. As nice as the people working here seemed to be, we were disappointed in several key aspects of our stay. Despite the essentially really excellent reviews on both Yelp and TripAdvisor extolling the cottages on this property, we were underwhelmed. Perhaps it was just our cottage that had these issues. When I booked the cottage months ago now, there was only one left. I took that as a good sign. And so we signed on for our recent stay in Bar Harbor. Although we found cottage #10 to be in very good visual shape with what looked like a fairly recent paint job and newer amenities, we immediately upon entering noted that it smelled like someone's damp, mildewy basement. Despite how pristinely clean everything was, which we appreciated, the dampness prevailed and was unsettling. It had rained heavily the day we arrived but one rain storm alone would not create this problem. We opened the windows to air it out but disappointingly a window on one side of the cottage did not have a screen and hence we could not just leave all the windows open as we would have liked. When we inquired about getting the missing screen we were told "that one window has never had a screen" . Hmm..well, why not just get a screen and install it? Despite not wanting to flood the place with mosquitos and other flying bugs we did leave the unscreened window open for awhile hoping to create a drying cross-breeze with the open front two windows. While that helped somewhat it did not remove the dampness you felt and did not take away the mildew smell. Though the bathroom was in pristine and very clean condition the cottage owners' choice of installing a virtually rimless sink meant that there was absolutely no place whatsoever to put toiletries. There was a small space next to the sink where a small table would fit. It would have been nice to have something like that at least on which to put a few items and I urge the owners to fit something in that space to ameliorate this issue. The bathroom door would not fully open without hitting the side of the toilet bowl and meant that the space felt cramped and awkward. The towel rack was hung behind the toilet bowl which for me is always a dubious location. If not careful, towels can fall into or onto the toilet or around it, and no matter how clean a cottage or hotel room might be, this is something I would abhor happening when not in my own home. In fact my husband did knock down his towel on the second morning we were there. It fell against the base of the toilet bowl. Uh, no thanks. As there were no extras he used a beach towel we had with us. The first day we arrived we could not seem to get the a.c. unit to work. It wasn't that we needed air conditioning because it was pleasantly cool out but the unit had a setting called "cool-dry" which we thought might be useful as a way to dry out the cottage. The owner could not figure out how to get it to work either and apologized to us but then that was the end of it. Was there no one who knew how to work the unit available anywhere? The lamp on one of the bedside tables did not work after the first few minutes of our arrival. The next morning, I left a note in the room about it. When we returned that night the lamp was fixed but you could not shut it off without unplugging the lamp. I say, perhaps time for a new lamp. Although we did not use them, there is a gas grill and patio table and chairs for outside barbecuing and dining. Our cottage was one of the smaller ones having no kitchenette which was fine with us. We were happy with the fridge and Keurig coffee maker. Both looked new. There is also a nice flat-screen TV hanging on the wall but we did not use it. There is free Wi-Fi which we did take advantage of and appreciated. The cottages are located in a pretty setting a short walk from a beautiful rocky beach. The area is also wonderfully quiet save for the lovely sound of birds especially in the morning. This is a pet-friendly place. And although we no longer have a dog, I am always grateful for places that allow people to bring their animals. We had wanted a cute Maine cottage experience but the absolute dankness and mildew-y odor of the cottage, despite how bright and clean it looked, marred the experience. We were not looking for fancy, just a simple rustic but pleasant cabin. This might have been it save for the a kind of laxness around the things I've mentioned. A dehumidifier would help in the short run. The owners have done a good job of keeping things clean and updated but with other things not right, it doesn't add up for us at any price.

Solid bet, especially for couples or small families visiting Acadia NP. Pro: clean, modern cottages. You immediately see that all 12 cottages have been renovated and are presented well. Studio or kitchenette rooms. Flat-screen TV, Keurig coffee maker, fantastic shower (super valuable after a long hike). I suspect the owner is a craftsman given the condition. Also, they completely manage the property (maintain, housekeeping, reservations) as their house is on the property too. Location is outside of the busier Bar Harbor, but is an easy 7min drive in. Pet friendly. Con: Wi-Fi and heating didn't work. They have 2 networks setup, but my laptop, iPhone or iPad wasn't able to detect any for 3 days. Front desk said they'd been having the same problem, but weren't exactly gung-ho in addressing a fix. The heating-cooling is provided by a single inverter unit which kept giving me a fault code when I switched between the two modes. Not a big deal, but in the morning it's a bit chilly. Welcome to Maine.

Wonderful place to stay in Bar Harbor, Maine!

What a beautiful way to celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary!…read more The Bayview Hotel provided us with a room overlooking Frenchman Bay. We enjoyed sunrise views 3/4 mornings. (The 4th one was from Cadillac Summit.) Our room was spacious with one of the most comfortable comforters I've felt. We had a keurig machine, microwave, and mini fridge in our room. Appreciated the heater in the bathroom. Loved being greeted by the geese family on property in the morning and afternoon just outside our balcony. Our balcony had a couple of chairs with a table. We noticed the room beside us had a couch and bar stools in their balcony. While our balcony had cobwebs in every ceiling corner (lots of spiders on the railing), we were still able to enjoy the majestic sunrise views. They serve a continental breakfast every morning at 0700. Mid-day they serve charcuterie, cookies, fruits with refreshing infused water, tea&coffee. By far this was the most serene accommodation we've had. Calm and peaceful. They provide Adirondack chairs overlooking the bay. Friendly staff~ Brad at the front desk was kind in printing our Cadillac Sunrise pass for us & greeted us every time we passed the front desk. The hotel is less than 8 minutes from the Waterfront and about 10 min to Acadia National park depending on which entrance you use. All in all would return and recommend.

They were definitely not the quality that I usually get at a Hampton Inn. For some reason, the mattresses were marked with the word "summer" in black. I have no clue why. Possibly they put the bad mattresses out for high season. The other furniture in the room was outdated and the fabric was stiff and scratchy. It was not like any other Hampton Inn that I've ever been in. It felt like a two star hotel. They don't even have a microwaves in the rooms. The breakfast was adequate. They had lots of options, but when paying over $500 for a room, I kind of expected a little more when it came to the quality. The staff at the front desk changed my room but it didn't make a difference. I did not sleep good not one of the three nights. The pool area was well kept and the grounds were beautiful. I enjoyed sitting at the bench on the hill taking pictures. Only stay here for the view.

This location did not disappoint! I was able to check-in via the mobile app and select a room. The hotel space was very well-maintained. The room was also great with a large king bed a sofa-bed as we requested. The bathroom and water pressure were great. There were lots of outlets throughout the room as well as an iron, ironing board, alarm clock and refrigerator. The refrigerator was larger than most and had a separate freezer section. There was NO microwave in the room...which was a bit disappointing...especially when you are traveling with kids and frequently need to heat leftovers and other items. Instead, there are two microwaves available for guest use in the lobby. The TV was on the smaller side for a room of that size, but had a lot of channels. The free breakfast they offered was great...better than expected with a few hot options including omelets, sausages and home fries. They also have some other great options including yogurt, granola, fruit, cereal, waffle maker with lots of toppings and good variety of bagels, breads and pastries. There also had some cold juices and milk available for breakfast. There is coffee, tea and hot chocolate available for free all day in the lobby! The fitness center was bigger than expected. I used it twice and it was empty both times. Though we did not use the pools, all of them (indoor, outdoor and hot tub) all seemed well-maintained. Other guests seemed to be enjoying themselves while using them. There was a small "business" area with some work/counter surfaces, chairs and outlets. There was also a small play area with a table stocked with crayons and coloring pages, books, a small tent and a TV with cartoons on at all times! A great little area for the little ones to unwind for a few or just wait while the grown-ups check-in/out. There are a few shuttles available from the hotel that go into Acadia...but we drove and did not need that service. Although it isn't a bad idea...even for those with cars as parking at the popular areas during our early-afternoon ventures into Acadia were very challenging during our visit toward the end of August. Short drive to Acadia (5-10 minutes) entrances. Also, a shorter drive into downtown Bar Harbor (2-3 minutes) or a 10-15-minute walk if desired. Large and free parking lot. All staff we encountered were very nice, helpful and patient.

This hotel offers simple accommodations, free WiFi, parking on site, light complimentary breakfast, bikes, etc. But the emphasis is definitely on the downtown Bar Harbor location and how close this hotel is to many shops and other businesses. Enter from the main Mt. Desert St. entrance or from the back by the parking lot. These folks almost (key word- almost) thought of everything because signs are clearly labeled. For instance, if you park out back, signs will lead you to the Lobby, Elevator, etc. Lighting in our room was glowy even in the evening and bed was comfortable. Our getaway was peaceful, front desk ladies were all super pleasant, beds are done in crisp white sheets. And even if the cool weather didn't let out, we took advantage of our balcony facing Bar Harbor's Village Green. Our stay was affordable. But my major concerns where the slow (clogging) water flow in our bathroom sink, the odd yellow discoloration on the toilet cover lid (didn't bring up these 2 issues with management as we didn't want anyone in our room- so wrapped a towel over it), the bathroom curtain wasn't ironed and the ill-sounding HVAC system was annoying. Thank goodness we could regulate it ourselves. Affordable or not, expensive or not- issues like these can't and shouldn't happen anywhere. There are several pluses and minuses here- but I want to feel comfortable in my 'home' away from home in every sense of the word. But decided to cut our stay short. I know it takes a lot of moving pieces to maintain a hotel- but damn- wouldn't you want your hotel to run like a well-oiled machine so patrons are satisfied?

For example, the 2 weight rooms in the hotel and at the spa club house had basic equipment but the weights were insufficient for my husband. The only other amenities offered without an additional fee were tennis and the swimming pools but they were still closed because we were there in April, still the off-season. 3) The La Bella Vita restaurant food was mediocre and definitely not worth the inflated prices charged. Not to mention, our waiter didn't even know what a Chianti red wine was even though he was working at an Italian restaurant. 4) The outdated wall room heater and air conditioner was way too loud and we couldn't hear the TV without turning it up (I'm sure our neighbors could hear). The room was well appointed and ready an hour before the check in time. Robes are provided in the rooms, and the room service is from the nearby restaurant Paddy's. Prior to bedtime, we filled out the breakfast room service ordering menu and placed it outside. The first day was great. Room service arrived right on time the next morning. We ate and headed out for the day. I noticed later at night that they didn't leave another room service ordering menu. Figured no big deal, we'll just go down for breakfast the next day. This is when we ran into a few issues - we went down to the restaurant for breakfast at 930 and were told by a staff member at Paddy's that they were backed up with room service orders and she recommended we go across the street for breakfast, or there would be quite a wait. Okay that's fine - we had plans for the day so we ate across the street. A bit frustrating because breakfast was included in our nightly rate. When we got back in the afternoon around 3pm, I noticed the room wasn't cleaned. On the way out for dinner, I spoke with the front desk about housekeeping, and also asked them to make sure we get a room service breakfast order menu as we didn't the day before. When we came back from dinner - only one of the two beds was made. The bathroom floor was not vacuumed, and we didn't have our breakfast order menus. Again, I reached out to the front desk, who sent someone up with the menus. I mentioned the housekeeping issue to the guy who brought the menus up - he clarified that we would like to make sure both beds are made and the bathroom is cleaned .....yes. Felt odd to have to clarify that as this is usually understood. Later that evening we wanted to order room service for dessert - it was difficult to get someone on the phone. Ended up going to the restaurant to get the dessert to-go. The next morning our breakfast did not arrive. I called to follow up - Nicole at the front desk checked with the restaurant and made sure our food would be delivered. Our food arrived, though an hour late and missing one entree. Not Nicole's fault; she was excellent with following up with us. There seems to be some staffing issues as the one person at the front desk is always alone with seemingly a ton of things to be responsible for.
