I was very concerned as Luna showed a lot of play aggression toward me & fear & aggression toward my roommate's dog. This review is long overdue!! We began working with Hannah in fall of 2021. We reached out for an assessment and some guidance with our youngish (we suspect was 1.5 y.o. at the time) rescue who we've learned is a pibull/poodle/herding breed mix. She's 40 pounds and we went through a long journey with her as her fosters originally when she was pregnant and helped raise and adopt out the 12 puppies she had at home (she arrived to us pregnant). After the puppies left and we got to officially be mama dog's owners, her "super chill" personality went a little sideways and we realized she herself had a lot of puppy energy as well as obedience needs. She also has a VERY strong prey drive which we would learn would benefit us when working through training but needed channeling in a productive way and at the time was presenting some challenges when around small dogs or squirrels etc. We had done some adhoc training ourselves up to that point but knew that her intelligence and energy would benefit from professional input. She also began to demonstrate reactivity towards humans visiting our house as well as dogs out in public which was out of our wheelhouse. We tried another dog trainer at first whose methods did not seem like a great fit for our pup as she wasn't that engaged and then we came across Hannah! Even with her initial assessment of our dog, Hannah felt like she had an amazing read / understanding of her that was COMPLETELY in line with what our experience had been as owners. She assessed the reactivity to be an issue around impulse control and dialed us back to start from "kindergarten stage" to build a foundation of engagement with us as her handlers, obedience, and finding the right tools to communicate with our dog around her newly learned skills / commands. An initial assessment with Hannah quickly evolved to multiple training packages with her over the following months as we felt like Hannah was really "training us to be trainers" with our dog. The fun/positive outcomes we have enjoyed have been amazing, especially in terms of how our relationship with our dog has improved. To quickly summarize: -Our dog went from pulling a lot on leash to comfortable and relaxed loose leash walking, even around distractions. -Reactive to people visiting our home to now waiting patiently on her "place" while strangers come in only to be released and give a sweet yet space-respecting "hello" when she is released on command. -Adjusting to moving house recently and learning to be happy when left alone in the new spot. -Doesn't lunge at squirrels or small prey when she encounters them on walks -Will relax on her "place" on command as a general default tool whenever something random or unexpected pops up at home. -Is just happy and having fun day-to-day and much more relaxed which is so fun to see! -We get comments both from home visitors and strangers on the street (even cars stop and roll down their window, not joking/bragging) to remark how sweet and well-behaved our dog is. On top of that, we feel like we've now gotten to a place where we can't wait to build on our now solid training foundation to incorporate new skills (like agility skills and some herding commands like running out from us in wide arcs both clockwise and counterclockwise based on whistle tones!!). All of which has only been possible because Hannah gave us easy to understand science-based instruction on dog training conditioning, psychology, and how to layer instruction / conditioning in the right way so a dog knows what the expectation is, how to execute, and how to have fun in the process. One important note though, which we love about Hannah, is that she doesn't peddle any "quick fixes" or overnight approaches. She has guided us to the careful and patient work that dog training really involves. Having our heads on the right track in that transparent way has helped us immensely. At this point, we still happily seek Hannah out for continued training because we have had so much fun with it and it feels like we just keep finding new windows into the potential of our dog. Our Papillon/Chihuahua puppy, Bowie, is a major play-biter. When we first got him, he loved nipping at our feet and clothes. I got a new puppy (pomsky) and was having trouble the first day as she was so attached to me and wouldnt stop crying and barking when I was out of her sight. It was hell at night when I'd go to sleep because I would put her in my bathroom with a baby gate and she would cry most of the night. I began yelping for a dog trainer to come out and assess my puppy's behavior and came across this page. Hannah came out in just two days and went over a lot of helpful information with me. Hannah was immensely helpful with my dog Henry's issues. Things had gotten so bad that I was avoiding walking him during certain hours when I knew other dogs were out, and avoiding having my friends come over because if his crazy barking/ jumping & sometimes aggressive behavior. Especially with men.  It was becoming a serious point of stress for me because I felt like I couldn't even have my family visit yet if I tried to lock him in a room or a crate to manage him he would just cry and bark for hours. He was very "leash reactive" (would scream, turn around a bite the leash and even my legs) when he saw other dogs or when a truck or skateboard would pass. He would guard his toys and bones to the point of snapping at me, and also had separation anxiety. It was overwhelming. Hannah was quickly able to ascertain that the root of most of my dog's issues was based in overstimulation, frustration,  anxiety, and me accidentally setting him up to fail and then rewarding his bad behavior. We were repeating a behavior loop until it had just become our "normal". Hannah taught me how how to prevent, handle & change his reactions in ways that felt realistic and practical to me. I now feel like I have a handle on all 3 of the biggest issues with him, though we're still working on it and the issues aren't 100% resolved, I've seen so much improvement in his behaviors over just a few weeks. I can now walk him directly past another dog across the street and he will look away from them and up at me. The best part is I'm neither constantly bribing/ distracting  him with treats, nor doing things that another trainer showed me that basically felt abusive. He's so much calmer all around, and a way better listener. I feel like I am better connected to him and able to read his body language and anticipate his reactions rather than be surprised by them and then try to respond in the moment, which felt chaotic. (And didn't help). Hannah helped me understand that there were times when I thought he was just very excited but he was actually stressed and frustrated. I love that she really focused on setting my dog (and me) up for success while also setting fair boundaries and expectations for changes in his behavior (because I was "babying" him...oops) and showing me exactly the exercises I'm supposed to do to reach goals. I also really love the "balanced" approach. I have tried other trainers recently who were both much more punishment based and also "positive only" and neither worked! I would feel optimistic because there would be be a change with him while they were working with him but as soon as they left nothing would stick and I was back to square one.  I honestly didn't really feel like they were training him so much as he was kind of scared of the 1st trainer and just distracted by the treats with the 2nd. I'm on session 3 with her and plan to do several more and and I am really excited about his about his progress so far and I'm looking forward to doing more fun things with him like agility in the future when I don't have to worry that hes going to bite me just because he sees a dog a 1/2 mile away :) I'm really glad Hannah was recommended to me and I was able to work with her before his behavior got more out of control and I wasted money on more trainers who just told me to "me a better pack leader" or stuff food in his face while he was going insane Thank you Hannah! read more

We got a year old Boston terrier / older puppy this fall, and wanted to work with a trainer about adapting our pup to our house and getting down basic commands and cues as well as general shyness. Hannah McCoy is Spot On- a terrific trainer for our dog and for us! We needed help us with our high-energy puppy who seemed to be constantly jumping and nipping at us "for no reason". Hannah quickly helped us understand that there is always a reason, we just couldn't tell that he wanted desperately to play and not be left alone. She gave us lots of tools to be able to work with him so that he would play appropriately and keep busy when he was on his own. Together we got him to master his basic commands and some cute party tricks, too! Most importantly, she showed us how to read his behavior so that we can communicate better, and got him to know what to expect from us as well. As a result we have a wonderful relationship with him. That puppy is now a 90 pound dog that we can take anywhere, including the local high-end hotel that welcomes him like a special guest as we wander through on our regular walks in the neighborhood. He still has lots of energy and personality, but he is also well mannered and under control. We loved working with Hannah because she is very professional and direct, but also very sensitive and personable. She is focused on getting results and takes care to fully explain what to do in a positive and clear way (several times, in different ways if need be). She is very well versed in training techniques and is also able to personalize the instruction to suit the individual dog and owner. She couldn't have been more tune with our dog or more patient and helpful with us. I recommend Hannah and Spot On with out reservation. HANNAH IS AMAZING. My husband and I called her after our rescue dog Beau *broke a window* because he was so anxious about us leaving the house. She came to our house and did a 2-hour session focused on separation anxiety and showed us so many things. We are so lucky to have found her. She outlined her training program, stayed at our house while we were out of town and when we returned, we had practically brand new dogs with different habbits. While each dog has different issues and we know Rome wasn't built in a day, she spent so much time with us to ensure we know how to walk them, when to reward them, when to ignore them and how to interact with them. Hannah is the GREATEST!! My fiance and I are first time dog owners who rescued an older dog from the Burbank Animal shelter. We were fumbling our way through it when we had an out of town commitment that couldn't be postponed - we were only two weeks in to new dog ownership and felt terrible. Hannah came to the rescue. She stayed in our house while we were away, and we came back, Charlie was house trained, leash trained, knew how to "sit" and she had also worked through some of his issues about being alone. On top of it all, she was a great house sitter, and even took care of our difficult cat. A week or so later, we had a session with her so she could train us, and she did. Though I think Charlie is still better behaved than we are sometimes. Hannah is so positive, patient and cool. We love her, Charlie loves her. We wouldn't go anywhere else!! read more

I have never had a dog trainer/housesitter take care of my dogs while out of town. So, my neighbors recommended Hannah McCoy from Spot On Dog training. First, I had her come and work with me and one of my dogs that has a jumping issue. I thought she was extremely thorough, passionate and caring with followup notes, emails and calls to many of my questions. I then brought her to my home (lots of plants to water ) to work with the dogs and house sit for 4 days. Not only did she exceed all expectations, but when a friend tried to reach me for an emergency, Hannah immediately contacted me to let me know. One of my Bichons has always had a finicky eating issue and Hannah played a game with him to get him to eat his meals. I am still doing that game and he is eating every bite. She worked with me to teach me how to handle my dog's behavior and sometimes I think it is the people who need more training than the pets! Hannah is AMAZING!!! Our two dogs, Bublinky (7 months) and Denzel Washington (3 1/2 years) were, if I had to put words to it, awful. Hannah came in and listened to our concerns, which were different with both. She worked with the pups, but more importantly, worked with us to correct our pups behavioral problems. Her method is positive reinforcement, which was a big thing for us. We wanted our pups to obey us without being scared of us. Her methods were just what we were looking for. Our dogs learned more (and so did we) in just five days than they had their whole lives! She was able to determine the best training methods for our pups based on their individual personalities. She basically saved our household!!! Hannah was not only great with the pups, but she was absolutely wonderful to with us humans too!!! We rescued a 5 month (or so) puppy who is very timid and afraid of people. I actually found Hannah on Yelp and scheduled an in-home consultation. Over the phone, she even gave me some tips to get the puppy more comfortable around new people. (The tips worked, by the way!) During our consultation, Hannah gave some GREAT advise! She had really brilliant insights in how we could maximize training and get the puppy to exercise impulse control. During her visit, I showed Hannah how the puppy is terrified of this doorbell trigger I bought. In 15 minutes, Hannah had the puppy approaching the doorbell trigger on her own! Amazing! In fact, within 3 days of following Hannah's instructions, the puppy is pressing the trigger on her own! I have to say that I am so glad I called Hannah. I have a LOT more homework to do, but I look forward to working with Hannah more. read more

Hannah is far more than a dog trainer, she is also an experienced registered vet tec and worked hand in hand with several veterinary animal behaviorists so her skills and knowledge far exceed most trainers I have ever worked with. It's important to know all aspects of animal care if you are working with them. Hannah is the ONLY person I would ever allow to stay in my home and care for my little dog because she is very shy and can be anxious around new people.
