I went back and forth on posting this since it happened a couple years ago, but figured it's still worth putting out there for anyone looking into Karma Dog Training. We enrolled Poppy, our 4 month old puppy at the time, in their 10-day reverse board-and-train program. I wasn't expecting her to come out perfectly trained in 10 days, but I did expect the level of intensive training they advertised on their site. The trainer we got was sweet and had a calm energy, which I liked since Poppy was skittish around new people. But the actual training didn't come close to matching what was promised. We have security cameras at home, so I could see exactly what was happening while we were gone. Most days were only 5-10 minutes of actual training. The rest of the time the trainer was watching TV or on her phone. If we'd wanted someone to watch TV with our puppy, we could've asked a neighbor for free. By the end of it, Poppy knew "sit" and "down" and not much else. The separation anxiety and potty training work we'd specifically talked about before signing up hadn't really progressed. I want to be clear, my problem wasn't that she wasn't fully trained in 10 days. It's that we paid for a specific service and didn't get it. I emailed the owner, Jeff, sent him the video clips, and asked for a partial refund. He wouldn't address any of it directly, just offered services that were already included in our package and turned down the refund. Then he was rude to my husband on the phone, which threw me because my husband is about as easygoing as they come and almost never gets worked up over anything. I also found it concerning that the exit document I was given included a clause saying clients agreed not to post negative reviews. I never signed it, but seeing that made me question how much honest customer feedback actually makes it online. Super shady. We ended up going with a different trainer afterward, and Poppy turned out exactly how we'd expected her to after actual, consistent training. Maybe we just got unlucky with the trainer. Karma dog training has been amazing for our young dog. We worked with Monique for 4 months as a specific doodle expert for our mini Bernedoodle and she worked miracles. Was super helpful with all our questions, provided tips, and helped trained our pup, Penny, to be a full functioning doggo. Highly highly recommend, especially if you have a doodle. We also worked with Holly for the puppy kindergarten class, which I would really recommend for dog socialization and fundamental training tips! We saw a big difference in her socialization with this class. Lastly, we did board and train with Kelli, who was great at taking care of our dog while we were out of town in addition to hands on training. Everyone at Karma clearly loves dogs. Vanessa was a lifesaver and was really able to wrangle my rescue. After being returned 4 times to the shelter and getting attacked at doggie day care (never to to Citydog Weho) my dog was traumatized. She pulled and jumped, barked at men, big dogs and garbage trucks and lunged at passersby and small dogs. She was (and still is) hyper vigilant and hypersensitive and has a lot of energy even with 2-3 long walks per day and mental stimulation. I had tried a class at pet smart, another class in Atwater, private lessons from a "behaviorist" who didn't use treats or commands, private lessons at her doggie daycare and a poorly trained private dog trainer from another doggie day care. She was too hypersensitive and high strung to succeed in a class setting and the doggie daycare trainer was ill-equipped to deal with her energy. I was at wit's end as I could not take her anywhere for fear she would start a barking frenzy, and walking her was a nightmare. I tried calling several dog trainer companies including Barkbusters which doesn't use treats (and ghosted me when I asked them how they initially train the dogs certain behaviors if they don't use treats) and LAK9s which uses slip leads. I had used a slip lead (aka choke collar) with my first dog and learned that she would not behave without her collar on so that was a hard no. Given my dog's trauma, I really needed a trainer who used positive reinforcement, not punishment or aversive training techniques. I called Karma Dog Training because they advertised that they use positive reinforcement. It sounded exactly like what my dog needed. First I had a phone consultation with Vanessa who was friendly and open and listened to all of my concerns. I felt optimistic when she said she could help with all of these behaviors so I signed up for 7 lessons plus an initial consult. The first lesson was longer than regular lessons since it was the initial consult. Vanessa met my dog and got a sense of her idiosyncrasies and training needs which were many. First of all my dog was literally all over the place when it came to walking. Vanessa had to really work with her in the hallway to teach her to stay next to her side and to focus on her. Vanessa was amazing! She taught my dog to pay attention to her in one lesson using treats and praise. It was a miracle that she got her to walk in a straight line lol. Anyway long story short we kept working on walking and basic commands and discipline. She now walks next to me and focuses on me while we walk. She will pull when excited but is able to be redirected when asked to sit and focus on me. Vanessa told me walking would take a long time which it has but she is a thousand times better than she was. We also worked on desensitizing her to her triggers which has helped a lot. Since my dog is hypervigilant and part terrier, she will always be on the alert for squirrels and anything to bark at but she is manageable now and is only getting better. Now that I know how to keep her in check on walks and she knows the basics, we started working on tricks like roll over with Vanessa. In short Vanessa is basically a miracle worker and has been invaluable in teaching my dog to become a well-adjusted member of the dog world. More importantly she taught me the skills to work with my dog as well as how to feel more confident and less anxious, as dogs pick up on their owner's energy. Also she is so good that people have approached her and asked her if they can train their dogs! 11/10 would recommend Vanessa for any dog training needs! I reached out to a few local places, and Karma Dog Training stood out right away. They responded almost immediately via email, and within a few hours, I was on the phone with the founder, Jeffrey. He walked me through all of my options clearly and patiently, no pressure at all, unlike some other places. You can tell he genuinely cares about the animals, and he answered all of my (many) questions without hesitation. They offer several different programs, and to help me decide, they set up a call with one of their trainers. That's when I met Kelsey W., who I instantly clicked with. I ended up going with their Vacation program, where the trainer stays at your home while you're away, and I'm so glad I did. Kelsey has been nothing short of amazing. She made me feel completely at ease before my trip, even coming by super early in the morning before my flight for a walkthrough. While I was gone, she sent detailed updates and photos of everything she and Koa were working on, which made me miss him like crazy, but I knew he was in great hands. When I got back (with a cold, of course), she still took the time to hop on a 2+ hour call with me to go over everything they'd worked on. I was honestly blown away by how much Koa had learned in just a week. It was a little overwhelming to process at first, but Kelsey was incredibly reassuring and gave me all the tools I needed to continue the work. My experience was very different from the reviews on Yelp. We paid a lot to have her boarded, although they said they did a lot of work on her, follow ups on our dog's progress seemed more like a burden to them. Also, there was not one notable positive difference when we received her back, in fact, our dog was more reactive afterwards. The reason for 3 stars is because there was a very good trainer we worked with afterwards but unfortunately she is no longer with the company. During the whole duration of the training with this company, I always had to follow up with them multiple times to see what the next steps were. Dog training is so expensive and especially if you have a dog that requires more intense training, I would say it would be good to keep an open mind. I have tried 3 notable dog training companies from Yelp and I would say I made the least progress with this company, the other trainers/companies, I was able to at least say she made progress and had at least one positive outcome from the training. read more

Amazing folks. Hi highly recommend company. I used Karma about 10 years ago to help train an unruly extra 2+ large GSD who knew zero commands (not even no). Debbie was the trainer then & did an excellent job so after I recently adopted Chloe, a 9 month old female Belgin Malinois, who also knew no commands, I went back to Karma for help. The owner jeff quickly took my call, understood Chloe's reactivity issues and special needs and was able to have me work with a suitable trainer Shayla. Shayla did an amazing job working with Chloe. All love and compassion. Chloe is so special that Shayla carefully enlisted the help of another Karma trainer who has the perfect well balanced dog for Chloe to meet. Shayla also provided me with a number of reference materials and other tools as this is a process for both Chloe and me. My knee jerk reaction with a firm no or stern training techniques does not work well with this particular breed. It really takes a lot of work and patience to provide a good home for a Belgian Malinois (especially one that was neglected) but i am confident Chloe will turn out to be one of my best fur babies yet. We have an amazing English lab puppy (Homer) but we were totally lost as to how to begin training him. We did one private session with Holly, and immediately purchased a package. My puppy, Barbie, was very intimidated at first with the socialization but thrived in the learning environment.
