Hang Bar is a new Vietnamese inspired bar/restaurant that feels upscale and would be fitting in the hustle and bussle of a downtown. I recommend reservations for weekend visits as it was quite busy and larger groups would definitely need to wait as walk-ins.
FOOD (4.5/5)
Our waitress recommended we order 2-3 dishes per person. Most dishes come in small appetizer portions. We ordered the Five-Spice Scallops, BB Mac Rolls, Hai Hau Ribs, and Pho Wagyu Consomme.
The Five-Spice Scallops is served as 3 soup spoons of scallops garnished and seasoned with a glaze. Scallops were fresh, complimented well with the glaze. Very rich, creamy, and smoky - all things you expect from a scallop.
The BB Mac Rolls is served as 2 rolls with a lettuce wrap. It's essentially a big mac in the form of a spring roll with homemade mac sauce. This was highly recommended on Tiktok, but in my opinion it was alright. Not missing much if you pass on these.
The Hai Hau Ribs are served as a small tower of crispy baby back ribs with a light seasoning. Relative to the other dishes the ribs were actually quite substantial. Nice light onion and salt seasoning works well to keep the integrity of the ribs.
The Pho Wagyu Consomme was absolutely the star of the night. SUPER DUPER RICH in flavour! The broth was decadent, smooth, and touched with a overtone of truffle. I devoured this dish. Highly highly recommend!
We also had the Gateau au Pandan which was a pandan flavoured sponge cake covered in a peanut and sesame crumble. The pandan flavour is really faint, the star of the dessert in my opinion is the crumble.
DRINKS (3/5)
I ordered the Viet Coffee Martini which I expected to taste like an espresso martini but sadly it missed the mark a bit. The drink comes with condensed milk at the bottom of the glass which doesn't disolve well in the drink unless stirred. I'd recommend giving it a stir to mix into the liqueur.
SERVICE (4.5/5)
Service staff was generally very friendly and fluent in English and French. We received our first few dishes at a normal pace however our next batch of dishes took a REALLY long time to arrive. Our waitress apologized a few times saying the kitchen was short staffed. Without prompting, the manager personally offered us a free dessert and comped the drink. I think the transparent updates and proactive gesture to make a bad situation much better made our experience even more memorable. Speaks volumes on the restaurant to be able to adapt and stay true to customer experience.
AMBIENCE (5/5)
The bar feels really modern, upscale, and decorated cohesively. My only qualm is that the chairs are a bit short for the tables so it feels like a bit more of a stretch to eat than usual.
PRICE (3/5)
With an upscale ambience you can expect a higher price. Pricetags on menu items were on the higher side for the amount of food served. However most dishes make up for the price on flavour and overally eating experience.
ACCESSIBILITY (4.5/5)
Hang Bar is located a few minutes walk right outside Victoria Square-OACI metro station. It also seemed like there was street parking right outside.
OVERALL (4.5/5)
Hang Bar is a great spot for an upscale night out for small-medium sized groups. Food was generally really great and had nice rich flavours and textures. The proactive approach to service and looking out for CX resonates deeply with me and adds to the restaurant's credibility. Really recommend if you're in Montreal! read more
