Located in a neighborhood in Mile End, this restaurant seemed extremely popular among locals. We waited for a good 30 minutes but didn't receive a text message so we went back to check. The staff was nice enough to give us two seats. But don't recommend coming here on weekends... The restaurant serves small plate dishes. We ordered some of the popular items including beef tartare, potted salmon and ceviche. I had nothing to complain about except the food were a little salty and price was a little steep for the size. Great breakfast/brunch place to eat in Montreal! We came here before heading back home and were surprised to see the retaurant quite busy on a Tuesday. Luckily there were 2 seats left at what one might call a "communal table." I ordered an Americano and eventually a glass of sparkling wine. I wanted a Mimosa but they mix it with apple juice instead of orange so I declined. They have an excellent wine selection, mostly natural wines which are my favorite. For entrees, I had toast with eggs and side of bacon. I also ordered this butternut squash dish for an appetizer which was excellent. My husband also ordered toast, with eggs and fries. Before we ate the server came over and told us there were 2 bar seats avail. so we were very pleased to move. I loved it here! Let me start this off by saying these are the best scrambled eggs I've ever had. They were buttery and soft and seasoned just right. I heard the guy a-crossed the bar talking about how they were the best scrambled eggs ever and he wasn't wrong. The mushrooms and the jam and toast were also very good. Definitely get the jam on the side, the toast needs it. The service was great, sitting at the bar was nice, and we didn't have to wait long at all to get a table or our food. In so many ways, Larry's is just what a restaurant should be. I came solo and sat myself at the bar, which is comfy and nicely lit with the little neon "Larry's" sign across from me making me feel right at home. The staff was super friendly and just the right amount of attentive. The dinner menu is relatively short if you're not in the mood for a sandwich, but there's a good looking option for whatever veg/meat/fish you're going for. I had the mackerel spaghetti. The pasta was perfectly al dente, the sauce was a rich, spicy tomato-fish masterclass, and all topped off with some breadcrumb for texture. Simple and very delicious. Try before you commit as I had a really expressive natural skin contact wine that might not be for everyone but was definitely for me. For another patron's espresso martini, I watched the bartender arrange a few coffee beans for garnish with the kind of great care that the place seems to put into everything they're doing. My only regret is only having one stomach to fill - highly suggest coming with a little group that likes to share. Great service! Great food! Chill vibes... great tunes! We came early like 5 minutes before they opened on a Saturday and sat at the bar. The wine menu is great and if we had all the time in the world I would've stayed all day and drank to my hearts desire but... as tourists we had a bit of an itinerary... I ordered the breakfast sandwich and my bf got the pikelets. Both were DELISH! But the pikelets really stood out, if I remember correctly they use their own sourdough starter for them. A good (just good) but super expensive brunch for what you get. Each individual item is purchased separately which is nice for making your own combinations but your bill really racks up (quite ridiculously) because of it. It's $7 for two scrambled eggs, for example, which might seem okay until you realize you're paying $3.50 an egg! $5 each for bacon and sausages and all of a sudden, I'm paying $17 for a basic breakfast that doesn't even include bread or potatoes. Another example is the broccoli special with anchovy sauce--not even a whole head of broccoli and what is essentially a caesar salad dressing for $15. I shared food with one other person and the bill still looked like we went for an expensive dinner. Some standouts were the scrambled eggs, cooked just the way I like them--super creamy. The pikelets were also very delicious--small tokens of slightly richer pancakes. But at the end of the day, I could make everything I got at home for much cheaper. I know that the whole point of brunch places is to sell overpriced breakfast food (especially more tourist-oriented places like this one) but it was a little crazy. You can get a fantastic, filling, and more reasonably priced and complete brunch meal at Le Cartet, to be honest. read more

The small plates and brunch are quite pricey -around $16 cad per plate. We ended up getting sandwiches. We ordered a porchetta sandwich, a Cuban, a salmon mousse, and a blt. All of them were delicious. My porchetta was delectable and it was sandwiched with a sour ciabatta which gave it a perfect tanginess. The portions are quite nice, and the prices are reasonable. By far, the worst service I've ever experienced at a restaurant. Seems like because of the mandatory service charge, the staff does not attend to customers anymore. In our case, this included not bringing the drinks we ordered until we reminded the staff member, not asking if we needed anything else, not bringing appetizers, not helping with a spill, not checking on the food once it was delivered, not bringing the check. When we complained to the manager about our waiter disappearing, she said he went on break, without telling us, and that she would assist us, but then did not. No one got reassigned to us. There was no offer of compensation. No offer to take the service charge off our bill (What service did we receive). Really, the whole thing was baffling and infuriating and we'll never go back. Think you should? The food was fine. Nothing extraordinary by any means. Much better options elsewhere. read more

I've been wanting to try Larry's for a long time because of its rave reviews. I went with a friend on a holiday Monday around 11 am and only waited 20 min to be seated. The staff will even serve you a coffee outside while you wait, which is nice! The resto is small and cozy and the staff were really friendly and efficient. I ordered a cappuccino and it was one of the best I've had a in a while at a restaurant. Originally I thought that the brunch menu included only the options under "breakfast" but it actually includes the entire menu. I ordered an egg, toast and the eggplant with pine nuts. The eggplant was delicious and the bread they used for the toast was fantastic! I was skeptical about the small plate format for breakfast but in the end I loved it, I got to select all the specific items I wanted instead of a predetermined plate. I really loved my brunch experience at Larry's and will certainly be back. They are open 7 days a week and on holidays. read more

Larry's was HANDS DOWN the best meal I had in Montreal and can not recommend the service and staff here highly. We got there pretty late around 10:30 PM and had the pleasure of being seated at the counter facing the open kitchen and had nothing short of an amazing experience talking to the chef and other staff as they picked up orders. We asked for recommendations and were suggested the exact opposite of what we had planned to order and boy was I glad for it. We ended up getting the flammkuchen, squash gratin, and chicken and cabbage. All three dishes were phenomenal and are a must order. I had no idea what flammkuchen was beforehand but it turned out to be a rich sweet and savory mini pizza with apples and meat and a spread I couldn't even explain. The squash gratin blew my mind and was surprisingly sweet but also creamy and hearty, with just the right amount of crisp and crumble on top. And the chicken and cabbage hit the right notes of acidity and citrus zest that I would've never expected in a dish that sounded like 3 basic ingredients. The chef let us sample a few things he was preparing along the way (don't skip the sourdough!) and made great conversation, we didn't ever want to leave. Despite seeming like undesirable arrangements, they were the best seats in the house at the counter. We decided to check out Larry's for a quick drink before our dinner at Hôtel-Herman. I've never been to Lawrence or Sparrow (their sister restaurants) but Larry's had a very cool, chic look to it. The plan was to grab a drink but we were told by the staff that they don't have a full bar license here. Meaning if you want to drink, you have to order two dishes each or if you're a couple, three. Never heard of that requirement before - I can understand having to order one dish but having to order more than that? No thanks. We skipped on both those options and ended up sharing a beef tartare. A peek into their open kitchen. Two chefs were hard at work when we arrived. We sat at the bar. I've never been to a place in Montreal where it was so Anglophone. Interesting/different vibe here... They had a tray of pickled goods. Those pickles look scrumptious. Menu is a simple one pager with no descriptions. Very hipster. They do have some interesting things on the menu. Would have loved to try the escabeche, brook trout and ox tongue. - Pink limoncello - can't remember exactly what this was but pretty sure it was non-alcoholic. Light, refreshing summery drink. - Beef tartare ($14.00 large) - the tartare was really nice with a raw egg yolk on top. Wish they weren't so stingy with the bread portions. Why do all restaurants seem to do that??? Besides that, the beef was nicely seasoned and fresh. A bit overpriced for the portion size but that seems to be the trend here. Review on a Wednesday August 7, 2019. In Montreal for holiday. It couldn't be more trendier, but I liked it a lot. Sometimes, I want pretty food served by cool kids in a very hip setting. All we ordered were two drip coffees, bubbles and squeak (potato mash with cabbage) with a sausage. We like to stop at new locations when we visit a city and taste a little of this and that instead of full meals. For sure it's on trend, but popular cool aside, it was nice. I liked drinking my coffee not rushed, as we enjoyed people watching and nibbling on the bubbles that ended up tasting better with some hot sauce. But that's us. You make like bland. The location is perfect for me as I live in the neighbourhood, it is right around the corner from it's sister restaurant, Lawrence, and the butcher shop. I came with a friend and the server recommended we share 4 plates. Everyday they have different ceviche le tartare, both fish and meat! We had the white tuna ceviche, nduja (spelling?) sausage with mackerel, watermelon and feta salad, and beef with green sauce (not pictured). The sausage and mackerel was very interesting, a unique dish, which I haven't experienced similar anywhere else. So many textures and complementary tastes. The ceviche was very fresh and perfect for a hot day. The beef with the green sauce (can't remember name) was very good. The waiter sold it to us by saying it tasted like pho, he was right on the money! Who doesn't love pho? Overall a really wonderful experience made ever better by the extremely personal service. Super! Our waiter at Joe Beef recommended this cool spot. We arrived to a pretty pack restaurant and had to wait about 30 minutes but it was well worth it. We actually sat at a bar looking right into the kitchen. It was quite the experience. Was very cool to watch these chefs prepare incredible food right in front of our eyes. Ordered the beef tartar, a beet and mozzarella plate, fried cauliflower, bread and butter, and a fabulous chocolate and blueberry tart- WOW! Everything was incredible! Very fresh and plated nicely. I met a friend for an early midweekbusiness breakfast. The place is small but it was not too crowded, I guess during weekends its hard to find a room here and it might be too load. The most adorable tapas cafe in Montreal. In a quiet corner off Saint-Laurent, Larrys is a cozy cafe great for a date or dinner with friends. I went with my boyfriend and another couple and we shared the bread which was fresh and soft, carrots with muhammara, heirloom tomatoes, corn bread with succotash, cauliflower, beef tartare, tuna ceviche, eggplant with zaatar, chicken liver toast, tangerine creme and peanut butter chocolate tart. All items were tasty and different. We loved the variety in cuisines, textures, and spices. My favorites were the carrots and eggplant, but would definitely order all again. We also tried an orange wine which we learned about in Montreal. It's similar to a rose in that the wine rests for a short time on the skins of the grape, but it has a deeper taste that has a red wine mouth feel. Would recommend trying one if you haven't. I liked my light lunch at Larry's, but I find it a bit pricey for the quality and quantity of the food. I have had better dishes in the past for a lesser price, but it's just that Larry's is very hyped by Instagrammers (a bit like Fabergé which is located on the same street) that they price their dishes quite expensively. Of course, their food is an eye-candy and a lot of people would simply pay a visit to Larry's because the dishes look good. I think that this place is a bit over-hyped, despite the fact that I like their lamb balls, but the ceviche is average. I paid around 35$ tips included, which I find too expensive for a lunch, but okay for the overall experience. Would somewhat recommend this place! read more
