Our one fancy meal was at Bar St-Denis. It's a small plate, sharing style restaurant that's quite unassuming from the outside. No reservations required on a weekday evening but it was semi-busy. Service was friendly and not too intrusive. 26 items on the menu; most dishes were $16.00 to $46.00. They also do a $85.00/person table d'hote. - 50/50 3/4 ($12.00) - half red vermouth, half white vermouth with tonic. A refreshing light sip - Pétoncle des îles ($32.00) - scallops were perfect - Matsutake ($20.00) - mushrooms in a simple creamy lemon and tarragon sauce was delicious - Poireaux ($16.00) - leeks were decent - Joues de morue ($28.00) - cod cheeks were ski slightly more chewy than expected. My first new restaurant of 2025! we had the tasting menu for 80$, 5 services and dessert. Each service consisted of two dishes, so in total there were ten dishes and two desserts. A very good time to be had. The good dishes were scallops, foie gras with brioche bread. Endive salad was nice, a simple dish which had contrasting textures and flavour, the most original and memorable for me. The pasta dish was delicious, the mains were a bit similar, the orange zested chou a la creme was very good although the top was very hard, was it supposed to be that hard? anyhow, a good find, would definitely go back in the summer to see what the menu is like. read more

Lovely meal. Spacing for dishes was a bit weird, we ordered 4 dishes from the cold section and fries. The asparagus and fries came last with about 15-20 minutes after the 3 other cold dishes. If I'm ordering fries I'd want to eat them through out my meal. Baked Alaska was so so..not worth the price and a bit too sweet. My mom was also in the bathroom but they didn't wait to bring it out, for an ice cream dessert and a place with this price tag I expected a bit more tact. Not a big deal though! Excellent! The prix-fixe menu was very seafood forward on this specific evening, which I loved. There was like a white fish carpaccio with celery and citrus kind of flavor, delicious, also some clams with like a southern kind of sweet yellow cream and bacon and fruit, plus the tomato tartar was out of this world, especially with the beaver-claw sized bread that was almost the consistency of a bao bun, but with crispy grilled outside. Then you had an amazing bay shrimp salad, SUPER COLD and refreshing, on top of some fried pork skin. Yum. And then there was this like deceptively simple cod dish, served with some kind of hull beans and the fish was pristine, almost like steamed or maybe just baked really lightly, perfectly cooked, and served with a butter kind of reduction sauce at the bottom, and some roasted sage in there too, I think. I was really excited to try the food at this bar because I really did enjoy my dining at au Pied de Cochon. Two of the chefs from there are behind Bar St-Denis. This bar does not take reservations so I recommend to go early because it was packed. We showed up at 7:30pm on Friday and there were only 9 people in front of us. We waited about 15 minutes for the hostess to bring us to a spot where we could stand and order drinks. I ordered a gin and grapefruit cocktail and my boyfriend ordered an IPA blanche beer. I later ordered a Bloody Caesar which was nothing special. Then we waited another 15 minutes before we got seated at the bar. It took awhile for someone to take our order. We ordered the fried calamari and kale, the pork and clams and the cheeseburger and fries. It was just enough food. The calamari and kale dish is a staple at the bar. It was good! The pork and clams were the bartender's favourite dish so we ordered it based on his recommendation. It was deep fried pork cutlet cut into thin strips. The sauce and the clams were delicious. The pork however was a bit overcooked for my liking. It was hard to cut with a normal knife. The dish has a lot of potential and I could see it being a hit if the pork was cooked to perfection. The cheeseburger was ok. It didn't wow me. My boyfriend was craving a burger so we got it but I wouldn't recommend coming to this bar and ordering the burger. The fries were really good though!! Just meh... we sat at the bar... usually a sweet place to sit. Dirty dishes were being collected in front of us, staff was folding napkins. In fact staff in front of us most of the night but very little asking if we needed anything etc. food had zero love or presentation. The restaurant itself looked like they pulled it together at the last moment. Chairs didn't match, black dark walls, bar was a cheap terrazzo-ish that could have been way cooler if it matched any of the other decor.. we waited 30 mins between apps and our pork chop entree. We watched fries coming out a packaging so I'd assume they weren't freshly cut up for the evening...pork chop entree was Mid at best... flavor not bad but then jarring bc they chopped up small pieces of pickles into the gravy lol. Jerusalem artichokes with black truffle were boring, smoked trout was decent but that's hard to f up, the tater tot was cold and had no flavor. Staff was very nice though, overwhelmed. Our waitress offered zero insight into the menu or made suggestions.. such a bummer as we are here just for the weekend. Waste of a night out.. read more

This place had the most positive buzz of all the beautiful bars I stepped into in Montreal. I'm sure there were other options to sample local beers, but their Montreal heavy beer list was the most interesting one I found too. A must for any lover of IPAs or anyone curious about what beers Montreal has to offer. I barely sampled their menu, but you could just tell by the way that they moved in the kitchen that they really knew what they were doing. I regret not ordering their mussels and fries, but $24 seemed a bit too steep for mussels. Instead I tried their delicate trout gravlax and their delicious chicken nuggets. I highly recommend this gorgeous bar for its atmosphere, elevated bar foods, beers, and service. This place does everything right. read more

OK, I'm biased. I'm an American gastronome who travels periodically to Montreal, to indulge in what I consider the finest cuisine in the world... Québécois. A decade long fan of Au Pied de Cochon, it was a foregone conclusion that I would curiously visit Emily Homsy and David Gauthier's new operation one evening. My girlfriend and I came in on a sleepy Monday. The first thing I can say is WOW, what a bar! The space, the decor, and the lighting are all stunning. I am not much of a drinker these days, so we went pretty straight away to the menu. The only thing we knew we wanted to eat ahead of time was the burger, but to be honest, it was the three unplanned dishes that blew us away. The Middle Eastern influenced beef tartare was one of the best tartares I've ever had. We had a calamari and kale dish, the calamari tender and perfectly fried. And we had seasonal morels and little peas in a cream reduction served on top of grilled bread... OMG! See my pictures if you're not salivating already, this is exceptional food. There were more things on the menu that we would try on return trips. My girlfriend's cocktail was excellent. In fact everything about the evening was excellent; and that this place stays open until 3:00a *seven days a week* makes it a total asset in a culinarian's registry. But like I said, I'm biased. "High cuisine" and "late night" are a rare but appreciated find. After an evening of tango, Steve and I were craving an exceptional meal and Bar St Denis delivered. Adding to the thrill, restaurant owner, David, was behind the bar engaging in his artistry and enthusiastically shared in conversation. BSD also offers incredible wine list and designer cocktails. Simple, but elegant ambience. We ordered the crabe, sea bass tar tare, falafel, salade, scallop ceviche. The menu descriptions are severely understated. The clams were presented nicely and tasted great, the asparagus was confusing (wrapped in lunch meat?), the halibut was the highlight, very dill-y and the fish itself was perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth soft. Great food. Great venue. Ok service. Good music but way too loud. We live 2 mins from there and would be there way more often if the music was at a more reasonable level. We used to live close to Majestique (it was the best) and are longing for a similar bar in terms of food quality, service quality and noise level (aka being able to have a conversation in a bar after midnight). read more
