We love the food, decoration and the service here, although the price is not cheap, each don is around $30, they have complimentary miso soup and recently they have more set meal on the menu, making the value higher. We ordered the set meal with salmon/avocdo and bara don with steamed egg (it is soooo yummy), must try. The eel don is really tasty too. The service is prompt and nothing to complain about. The environment is elegant and welcoming. We love to come back more often.
We came back to Hana Don recently and wasn't disappointed! We ordered their Sakura Set, which came with a special don, miso soup, roasted rice cakes and their daily dessert, we chose the cheesecake for this. We also ordered their prime rib katsu, creamy salmon roll and takayoki. I loved the donburi that came with the special set, the flavour profile of all the seafood was perfectly balanced. The rice cake was super chewy and the roasted salmon that accompanied it was delicious. The cheesecake was also great as it wasnt heavy and not too sweet. I always order takayoki when going to a Japanese resto and really liked the takayoki here. Finally, the prime rib katsu was done perfectly to our request. We always like dining at Hana Don as the space is nice and the servers are always very friendly. Would recommend for anyone who likes donburi!
Not all Japanese restaurants offer uni, but Hanadon does. I ordered the Hakaido dinner set that includes scallops, uni, and ikura - all my favourites. It comes with a bowl of soup. The seafood items were nice and fresh. But the bowl wasn't particularly large. For $45, I feel they could have offered more items.
Hana Don has 3 different locations in the GTA. The menus are very similar across all 3 locations. They serve a variety of dons (rice bowls) with fresh and premium ingredients, including uni (sea urchin), abalone, saltwater eel, octopus, Hokkaido sea scallops, to name a few. The signature and premium dons are certainly worth it - very fresh and great mix of ingredients. I love that they add little bits of cucumber and tamago in every don. Unatama Don (grilled freshwater eel and tamago on rice) is one of my favourite items here. House Salad comes in a pretty big portion, but it's mostly just iceberg lettuce (with a few slices of cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and avocado on top). All the donburis come with miso soup. Their miso soup is actually decent - has a little bit tofu and seaweed in it, unlike in many other Japanese / sushi restaurants where the miso soup is just broth.
This is the place where I will go when I'm craving for sashimi during work day! Lunch set was several dollars cheaper then the regular menu and everything is made freshly ! Nice staff and spacious seat :)
Service was quick and friendly. Food was good. They have dons starting from $18 up to $50+ depending on what you get. A good place for a meal. I suggest the dons over the katsu, the breading wasn't crispy, a bit soggy. This location doesn't serve ice cream like the fairview mall location.
I found my experience at Hana Don quite underwhelming. The rice and breading of the tonkatsu were way too soggy for my liking, and the set was pricey as well. I guess I might have ordered the wrong thing on the menu since Hana Don may specialize in seafood don...as the name suggests, but still. I'm not very motivated to come back
Food, sashimi was fresh Service was fast, servers responded to our requests Ambiance, restaurant was clean
Hana Don...... rolls rolls rolls bowls rolls and MORE rolls..!!!! The rolls are the BEST here!!! Hana Don has several locations, but this one is nicer! The decor, ambiance and staff are great! They do have an extensive menu so look carefully on the menu. If you love sushi rolls, don't miss out on this place, everything is fresh. Get there early so it won't be as crowded and your rolls will get done quickly.
Last minute reservation on Christmas Day and while they were 80% full, seating was provided quickly. Service was quick and very attentive, 5+ stars for their attentiveness. The food was pretty good, though no "wow" factor here. Some thoughts: the wagyu gunkan sushi was really good but OMG so oily. The chutoro sushi had too much ligaments that ruined the otherwise very fresh taste. Chicken karrage is as good as they come - juicy and not overly oily. The gyoza was a meh, the wine tofu was bland though the sauce is very good - if it was cooked for another 5 minutes or the tofu was thinner the broth would have permeated into the tofu. The grilled sea bass was VERY good , highly recommend to anyone who likes grilled fish.
Came here for lunch on a Monday afternoon. Learned they offer some amazing and well priced lunch specials and bento boxes on weekdays ( price range from $15 - $22). I got to try the Salmon bento box along with the pork tonkastu rice set. The bento box came with 6 pieces of California roll ( very fresh with soft rice) with two pieces of salmon teriyaki - salmon was perfectly cooked while I enjoyed the homemade teriyaki sauce. The pork katsu was hot and crispy yet still maintaining the softness of the pork meat. Overall, the restaurant had good Japanese decor with very quick and friendly service. I know they are also known for their donburi so will come back to try that next time!
Came here for lunch and had a great experience! The scallop dish was a good starter--very fresh and arrived quickly, along with the beef tartar dish. It was served with uni and caviar, which made it flavorful, though I didn't expect it to be spicy and had to remove the wasabi paste. The main dish was a seafood rice bowl with tea you pour into it--very soothing after the raw appetizers and quite filling; we couldn't finish it between the two of us. Would recommend it for a nice lunch spot!
We went to Hana don for a celebration dinner. The dining room is on the small side but we'll laid out. We were greeted promptly and our very helpful sever went over the lobster spécial and other promotions that were happening. We opted to try out their dons first since it was our first time there. We each ordered different dons to try and ordered chawanmushi, tako wasa and à gold dragon roll to share. Food cane out relatively quickly and most of the dishes were good. My daughter didn't love her build your own don as she said her salmon tasted off. At a fist glance, the dons looked small but as we dug into our bowls, we were pretty surprised at how filling the bowls were. My husband and I both enjoyed our Nagoya don and the large premium hana don. The don was well prepared with fresh fish and Shari that was on a less vinegary side which I liked. We may come back to try other menu items if we're in the area.
Walked in around 1pm for take out because of the 15% off promotion. i love the wide variety they offer for the custom don. you can choose minimum of 3 toppings, plus your base (rice with nori, shiitake or ginger). i ordered a custom don with nori rice, botan shrimp, chopped toro and seared flounder. it came with miso soup, and a side chicken karaage. (It was nice enough for them to throw in the chicken karaage altho my order was not $30 to get it for free) sadly, they didnt have uni at the time. they werent sure when the order will come in. I wish the bed of rice was a bit warmer, it was a bit on the colder/harder side. the botan shrimp was a bit on the smaller size but still tasty! sashimi was fresh. a little disappointed i got shiitake with my rice when i ordered the nori actually. overall i think the price is alright. i'd definitely come back since not a lot of places offer the minced toro don read more

I walked into here with the expectations that this would just be like any other sushi spot. Expectations of being uptight and expensive were my biggest concerns. I was happily greeted by an old server on my way in, mentioning to us that they have a seating time of 1.5 hours. I had no issue with that though. I was sat down and the servers walked by constantly checking to see if we were ready without prodding at us. I ended up choosing to make "my own bowl" and the server was very friendly saying ikura lovers can definately grab 3 portions of ikura! I settled for 2 orders and with avocado to save some money. It came out rather fast, the Miso soup was decent, nothing special I'd say. The bowl of ikura on rice was amazing though, big golden balls bursting with umami! Really takes me back to my trip to Japan. Rarely do I find ikura so satisfying and so much of it! The whole meal was also just 27 dollars, which is much cheaper than most places for that much ikura. All of the servers were pretty friendly and watched over our table to see if we needed anything. Water and extra napkins were brought to out table without us even asking. What really won me over though was the friendly banter of the older server. I'm very happy with my visit and highly recommend the ikura... Yum! read more

Took my partner to this place as we saw it on tiktok. Wasn't expecting much but knew it shouldn't be too bad. Boy were we surprised. The food was not only fresh but presented and made in perfection. Me and my partner was so happy at the end of our meal and would come back once in a while. read more

Came by on a Sunday night after reading some mixed reviews on Yelp. The pictures I saw was very attractive so I decide to give it a try. For 2 person,I ordered Sashimi bowl, Waygu steak, beef carpaccio, hot sake to drink and other a la carte sushi (scallop, foie gras etc). Here's where my points coming from: FOOD: 1) The premium sashimi plater ($28) : I personally didn't try because I ordered just for my mom. She said it was fresh so I am giving +1 point. 2) Waygu Katsu Set ($45) - I love their gimmick how I can grill the steak of my preference. The dipping sauce was o...k... The soy sauce was too salty and it doesn't blend in with green tea powder. I wish they offer the Japanese onsen egg with dashi soy sauce that brings in some sweetness but that's my personal preference. I am still giving + 1 point. 3) Beef Carpaccio ($16): No point to order this is if you are ordering the Waygu set. It taste like soy sauce + raw beef. Not impress with the taste and I didn't enjoy it overall. 0 points 4) Hot Sake (large $14.5): I always ordering hot sake when i'm in Japanese restaurant but this time...... the sake is over cooked maybe? It taste weird and the alcohol seems to fade away. 0 points 5) A la carte sushi - I had scallop, salmon roe and foie gras sushi. They are fresh but I prefer the foie gras sushi can be torched. + 1 point. SERVICE: The server offered the dishes explanation if needed and they always coming back to ask how was the food. The only thing is, I requested to have the beef carpaccio and the sashimi plate first as I figured out if all the food coming together I wouldn't have any space on my table. Which I was right! They mixed up the procedure so I ended up having my entree first and then appetizer (beef carpaccio) came in the middle of the time. Another thing is.. while I am enjoying my food (I don't like to be bother), the server came out of sudden to tell me the next table beside me is the owner's friend and here is the owner.... Honestly I don't need to know who sitting beside me or who the owner is. Just let me enjoy my food in my own little world please =) 0.5 point. Overall I enjoyed the meal here and a lot of improvement so I giving out 3.5 star. I will definitely come back next time with my husband or recommend to my colleagues. read more
Ordered for takeout: * B02 - premium Hana Don - $38 * B07 - premium Fuji Don - $35 * Y12 - chicken kaarage - $9 Cash discount 10% Order came with two bowls of miso soup. Presentation wise for the dons were really nice. Instagram worthy for sure. Is it worth the price? Not entirely, here's why: * It says premium sashimi, and the photo from the menu itself shows 2 sweet shrimp, but I only got 1 in my bowl. There was definitely alot of "decorative pieces" in the bowl to make it look pretty, which I didn't care for eating (e.g., kelp, flower, sprouts). It also came with alot of the white baby fish which I didn't really care for either, I just wanted the premium sashimi - expected something like a slice of Otoro in there for $38. The only thing I see premium is the abalone, and uni (but then there was only one piece of it). * Rice was good, has a bit of the vinegary taste. Proportion of rice to fish was definitely off. There was ALOT of rice. Make sure you ask for extra soy sauce! They only give you one take out packet of soy sauce for the don. Otherwise, I really liked how fresh the fish was and now everything was displayed. Their miso soup was a fairly big portion. Upon ordering, they do ask if you have any allergies and would accommodate, which is nice. I would've probably paid $25 for each don, not $38. They also had a soft opening 10% discount for cash payment. STAY AWAY from the kaarage. If you see from the picture I attached, yes, that tiny portion of chicken kaarage, was indeed $9. Not. Worth. It! read more

Great food. Quality of sashimi was great and flavours were on point; rice is ace. Price is fair for what you're getting. My wife and I have travelled to Japan a couple times and it's difficult to find anything remotely comparable here that isn't a few hundred bucks, so while this still isn't there, it's the closest we've gotten in this price-range. Both budget and premium options available as the menu is quite accommodating. Custom dons are convenient. Fry on the pork tonkatsu needs some refinement to reduce grease, but the quality of the pork and the flavours of the surrounding elements were all there. Chopped toro bowl was the highlight for me. Ambience is great. Beautiful design, soft instrumentals, very attentive service. I'm disappointed to see the oddly harsh reviews coming in. They're in soft opening, seeking feedback, and refining as they go. Let's have a little grace, yeah? We will definitely return. read more
Super impressed by the quality of fresh seafood from this place! Quarantine can't stop me from eat well! I came with a friend for takeout. I got sea urchin, salmon, scallops and shrimp as my toppings in my bowl. The dish comes with free miso soup and one free topping (Nori, shitake or ginger) which was also great. You have to pick a minimum of 3 toppings and I picked 4. My friend also loved their bowl as much as I did! It was definitely a treat and would recommend this place to anyone craving donburi. read more

Came during the soft opening as it caught our eye. Service was attentive but some servers couldn't really answer our questions very well as they had recently opened. Items ordered: -oysters ($16 for 6 pieces) Was not sure what type of oysters these were as the servers could not answer. The oysters come with condiments/sauce already on the oysters. On 3 of them is a house cocktail sauce and the other 3 had an onion and vinegar. The onion and vinegar sauce was waaaaay too sour so if I ordered this again I'd probably ask for no sauce or jsut the cocktail sauce. -Pork katsu set ($16) The cutlet came with a thick breading and was flavourful. The set comes with miso soup, cabbage salad, sesame seeds to grind to add to the sauce. It also came with a matcha salt for dipping. This wasn't bad, there was no dressing on the cabbage though. -custom don with scallops ($5), salmon ($4) and negitoro ($5) For the custom don, you have to pick at least 3 toppings then pay an additional ($2) for rice. So in total my bowl was $16 which I felt wasn't a bad price considering everything was fresh and was the perfect amount for me to eat. I would totally order this again or try one of their other dons read more

A bit of a hit and miss. I watched in anticipation as they prepared to open next door on my frequent visits to Chatime. The interior is more modern than many Japanese restaurants and they can really pack in the patrons. The page style menu was fairly comprehensive, and the server offered to explain the dishes if needed. I ordered A03, Tuna and Avocado on rice for $15. Wanting bit more variety, I added a couple pieces of Salmon Sashimi. The Miso soup arrived with the sashimi, but the main dish was another 15 minutes to arrive. The tuna was extremely good, but the six thin slices made up about the same amount as one large piece of sashimi. For the price it was not good value. Adding the salmon and after eating all the rice, I was still hungry after a $20 lunch. Overall, the food was very good, but portions were not worth the wait. read more

Hana Don (Woodbine and 16th) Left - Yamaimo Seafood Don, Right - Large Premium Fuji Don 7/10 Finally got to try @hanadon.official Due to Covid, we got to go! We had the Yamaimo Don which had salmon, tuna and scallops. The Fuji Don is assorted! I was definitely expecting more toppings than rice but that was definitely not the case. Overall it was okay, definitely had higher exceptions. At least we got free soup read more

I come here often because I like their dons and service. Today I ordered a trio toro don for $45. I was in the middle of eating when I found a piece of bone and scale inside the fish. See pictures attached. I called to speak with the manager and she said there's nothing they can do right now because they are busy but will offer 20% off the next visit. read more
Came here for the first time. Always wanted to try and never got a chance. I knew that the price is slightly on the high side, so it was expected. Ordered a premium seafood Don and a regular one to compare. Also ordered a chicken katsu for the kid. Food was extremely slow even though it was around 70% capacity filled. Didn't get my rice and chicken katsu for more than half an hour. A hungry kid whining didn't help either. But the premium seafood Don didn't come till I almost finish my whole bowl of rice. I think that's unacceptable in this price point of restaurant. The tea was also a watered down tea. I expected better. The premium seafood Don has a good selection of fish and very fresh. The regular one was mostly salmon, cucumber, and eggs, plus small portions of other fish or hokkikai. All filled with dices of end cuts quality meat. I expected cheaper type of fish, but not dives of end cuts. As for the chicken katsu, it was nicely presented and taste okay, but Katsura is better. Service was good and attentive, and this older Chinese waiter will try to interact and talk to their customer like in a HK style restaurant which I didn't expect but enjoyed. Pro - food quality, service. Con - long wait, tea quality. read more

Finally had a chance to try Hana Don. This place is definitely worth while to try and will repeat for sure. Sushi rice was cooked perfectly. Assorted fresh sashimi. The fishes were fresh but not the freshest. However I would rate this store as top 3 in the area. I have ordered takeout during the locked down period, this might have impact the freshness a little. Ordering online was easy but have to etransfer to them instead of paying online directly. However entire process was quite easy. Will find a chance to dine in at the restaurant. read more

Service was amazing and food tasted good too. Restaurant was also clean and neat. Highly recommend making a reservation as they get quite busy. Prices are on the higher end and portions were not that big but the fish was fresh and quality was good. Aburi don tasted pretty good. Overall, one of the better and higher quality Japanese restaurant. read more

I ordered a BC Sea Urchin don ($35) and two Aburi don ($22/ea). Presentation is neat and they gave a generous amount of sea urchin (covered the entire bowl!). I am very impressed with their quality esp. because the sea urchin is not at all bitter. Also worth mentioning is 10% off your order when you pay in cash. Take out was prepared and ready for pick up in a timely manner. Definitely would go back and try the rest of their menu. read more
In theory I found the food to be ok I have tried better sashimi dons elsewhere. The uni wasn't as fresh as I wished it was. The dons came with miso soup which was nice and not too salty like other places. The waiter asked you if you want water or tea I recommend getting tea as it paired nicely with the dons. The staff are all very friendly and always came around refilling our drinks. The restaurant is also very nicely decorated and had a nice atmosphere. read more

There's a new Japanese restaurant in town that specializes in premium seafood donburi! Hanadon offers a wide variety of donburi (Japanese rice bowls) all made with fresh high quality ingredients and are beautifully presented! They have sushi rolls, hot dishes, and katsu options as well. Pictured is their Hokkaido Don that features BC Uni, Hokkaido Scallops, and Ikura on a bed of premium sushi rice with shiitake mushrooms - every bite of it was so delicious! read more

Since returning from Japan, I've been missing fresh fish so I decided to check this place out. I ordered directly from the restaurant for pick up. During this fun time in our lives, they are offering 15% off pickup orders and they're throwing in free items with your order if you spend over a certain amount. I went with the Baka don, which was a mix of chopped fish, tamago, avocado, and tobiko over rice. My friend got the lobster don which has some interesting toppings. I personally liked my bowl and for ~$20, it wasn't a bad deal. The lobster don on the other hand had way too much cheese sauce and the lobster was overcooked, but they throw on gold flakes so I guess you can get this dish for the clout? The free item we got was called the passion roll which was unique to say the least. The roll consisted of sliced mango and avocado and was topped with torched kraft single cheese and a mayo based sauce. I can't complain about free food and it definitely grew on me, but it's not something I would order on my own accord. I'd recommend trying this restaurant. Obviously you don't get the full experience from getting takeout, but do what you can to support local businesses like Hana Don during this difficult time! read more
Wow! After seeing a post about this restaurant on BlogTO, I had to stop by. heard great reviews about this place and just had to check it out! we ordered the soft crab shell donburi, aburi donburi, and one of the sushi rolls the service here was really nice and the waitresses were attentive! the aburi was flavourful and the fish was nice and fresh! surprisingly it included wasabi and i don't know why, but it wasn't spicy which made it taste better together with the donburi the crab donburi wasn't too good in my opinion. while the presentation of the dish looked promising, it was a bit dry and just didn't have any flavor. i wish they added some sort of sauce for the crab or at least for the rice. ps the donburi comes with miso soup on the side read more

Probably this is my first review on Yelp, I droved by My parent and saw this Sashimi Don place. Ordered a Large Premium Hana Don for take out. Servers are very friendly and the quality and portions of the food I will say one of the best Charishi Style Don I have in Markham. Lots of different variety of premium fish inside. Price I think is fair for what they gave you. At some point I can say is cheap with $38 for large portions. I never had a sashimi rice bowl that made me full. Highly recommend and wish more people to support small business like this. read more
