12oz Ribeye with Steak Fries
James M.

Not sure what was better the food or the service. I stopped by for a quick early dinner. I was greeted by a very pleasant server who said I could sit anywhere. Since it was barely 5:30 most of the tables were open. Although the menu is not very large there are enough options that most could find something they like. In addition they offered two dinner selections. I decided to order the 12oz Ribeye Steak. It came with a side salad. The salad was incredibly fresh and topped with a delicious homemade balsamic vinaigrette. It was excellent. Next my steak was served with steak fries and some mixed veggies. I ordered my steak medium and it was cooked perfectly. There was so much flavor on this steak. It was absolutely delicious. The steak fries were also delicious while the mixed veggies were just ok. After I finished my delicious dinner the server brought me over some vanilla cake topped with chocolate mousse. I didn't ask for this order it, she just said it comes with your dinner. It too was homemade and delicious. I highly recommend the Hammered Steel Tavern and will definitely return. Some of the best food you can find in the area.

I brought it to the attention of the server and she said it was the kitchen's fault b/c she "put it in correctly" She offered to change it but I declined in the interest of time. The decor of steel tables and red plastic chairs is not pleasant but they have a more formal area. We will return and enjoy it. The food was a bit pricey for what we were given but we expected that given the area . Calamari was so chewy we opted to leave it , the server was kind and took it off of our bill (we did not ask ) . The oysters were freshly chucked to order and were so delicious. I had the steak frites and the steak was well charred and cooked to perfection . Truffle fries were also good , not too overpowering as some truffle can be . My husband had the roasted 1/2 chicken , it was okay , nothing to rave about . The mash was basic mash . We also had orange creamsicle crème brûlée, not our favorite but it does taste exactly as the name describes. The coconut sorbet was INCREDIBLE! Tasted so fresh with real coconut pieces . We requested the best seats with a privacy and whole it was private , the bench seating was not comfortable, you couldn't sit back comfortably while enjoying dinner . I would suggest to sit at tables with hard seats . There were fresh flowers on the table with mint leaves so it smelled wonderful . Lighting was initially only sky light as we sat outside but once it got dark we had a beautiful views of the lighted paths , and the restaurant lightning provided a romantic setting .

First off, this is truly indicative of Sussex County--off the beaten path, luscious, green... a dining experience that is elevated because of its location--if you are able to request a window seat, I would advise in doing that because we definitely enjoyed the beauty of the mountains and were entertained by the deer that came to graze right outside of where our table was located. I appreciate the history.. location.. service was quick and pleasant (Tina was our server). Food was decent enough.. we enjoyed the bread--though some parts seemed a little hard--and I recommend putting out salted vs non salted butter. Salad bar has a decent variety. My New England clam chowder was really good. My seafood platter with salmon, scallops, and shrimp was ok. The seafood was a little fishy for me. The cook said he tried his best to get my salmon to medium, but it was more well done. I appreciated that they informed me of their efforts. The shrimp were well done. We skipped dessert.. Would I return? It is super far from us at about an hour and forty minutes away, so because we weren't wowed by the food, it was nice to visit once.

If you don't want your entrées coming out with the appetizers, just give them a heads up, because the kitchen moves fast here. We started with the mushroom dish and a hearty soup...both full of flavor and the perfect start to the meal. Then came the star of the night: the lamb chops. Perfectly seasoned, cooked just right, and melt-in-your-mouth good. Everything we tried was fresh and satisfying, the kind of food that makes you want to go back the next day. The service was on point- Friendly and attentive, and the whole space has this quirky, cozy feel, like you're sitting in your grandma's living room with its mix of chairs and warm, homey vibe. Most of the food we had was good or very good. Our server was very nice and provided great service. She even handled the issue that makes this a 3 Star Review very well. The Manager did too. But if you're a respected chophouse, you can't get a steak wrong three times in a row. Frogtown offers a signature mixed grill experience that has a 16 ounce strip, a lobster tail, a crab cake, a few sides (whipped potatoes, long strips of carrots and delicious garlicky mushrooms). It's over $100, but really a pretty good value with all you get. My wife and I decided to split this. I ordered the steak medium rare, which is important to the review. The lobster tail was very good. The crab cake was meaty and good. The carrots were a highlight. The whipped potatoes were good. As was the creamed spinach the table shared. The calamari app (which was a bit heavy on the batter) and burrata app (needed more tomatoes) were both decent. The strip steak was the issue. As our server delivered the plate, she said "when you get a chance, could you cut the steak open and make sure it's done to your liking." I've never had a server in a nice steak restaurant ask me to do this before. It's not a good look. They should already know. I assumed she was concerned it was undercooked. I pressed my knife against the steak. Because I grill steaks, I knew that it was medium well or well done. I said "well, I can tell it's not underdone." I cut the steak down the middle. And it was medium well or well done. I very, very rarely send food back. But at a respected chop house, and at that price, I sent it back. And frankly, it wasn't a big deal at that stage because we had plenty of other food. A manager came out with a new steak. She apologized. Again, I was asked to cut it open. I pressed my knife against the new steak. I knew even before I cut it, because the steak squished as I pressed it. This time -- it wasn't even rare yet. So I had to send it back again. The steak came back. I cut it down the middle of one of the halves. It was a little more done, but it was on the borderline of being rare and undercooked still. I wasn't going to send the steak back a third time. So I ate the parts closest to the ends and sides. The steak was too chewy and underseasoned. I don't know what was going on. Maybe a regular chef was out and an inexperienced person had to step up. In any event, if you're famous for your steaks, you can't have those kinds of misses. Also, the plating of this experience could use a fresh look. Everything was put on the same plate and it was really crowded. 3 Stars

Although it was warm outside today, we sat under their covered bench table with the creek in back of us. The service was great and attentive! We decided to order the Deluxe Grill Mix ($175) which came with a variety of meats on top of some grilled vegetables and salad. There were a variety of steak cuts and were all well seasoned and tender. Their fries were closer to a thick potato chip but still tasty and crispy. The Deluxe Grill Mix came along with a large platter of hummus along with a bowl of chopped salad and pitas. Hummus tasted fresh and had a great smooth texture which complemented well with the pitas. The chopped salad was refreshing but needed a pinch of salt. There's also a little trail in the back along the creek that was great after our meal. They had lost our reservation and we agreed to wait in the bar until a dining room table was available. The restaurant was super busy so this took quite some time. The drink i had was over the top incredible. We finally get seated and are placed in a very small table right next to the fireplace which thank my lucky stars was not on. The server was friendly and we placed our order for appetizers and mains. They brought us bread and waters and this is where it all stalled. No food was coming out of the kitchen to anybody in our dining room section. I would say this went on for over 40 minutes. We enjoyed each other's company and we're patient. Finally the appetizers arrived. Nothing to write hme about. We had stuffed clams that were average at best. They were super dry and lacking of flavor. We had a bone marrow dish that was burnt and oily with a thrown about presentation for the dish. For our mains we each ordered 16 Oz aged ribeyes . They were cooked perfectly. We ordered Brussel sprouts which were also cooked perfectly, and rice pilaf which did not make it to the table as they served us some kind of potatoe augratin dish instead. We were at this point getting tired and we boxed up most of our meal. I had booked this experience as a birthday celebration. I assumed that as this was booked as a birthday celebration and we had this conversation in detail with our waitress that when deserts came out the entire happy birthday thing would follow... but it did not... it landed very dissappointingly for me. No special ending after being there for two and a half hours. We spent just over 300$ for the experience and it felt dissapointing.
