This is a restaurant that recently opened up about 5 minutes from my house. My neighborhood doesn't have many 'good' food places since it is more in the suburbs (almost rural) area of Loudoun County. This place apparently used to be a food truck and was so good that they made a permanent location. We tried the food on an early friday evening (apparently they sell out if you come too late). I think something with mushrooms on it/in it was already sold out by 5pm when we arrived. We got two of the platters that come with two sets of meats. The most surprising thing was the chicken. I think it was chicken breast, and usually chicken breast is dry.. especially when grilled/smoked. It was extremely juicy and had a lot of flavor. It was my wife's favorite meat! I really liked the brisket because it was super tender and flavorful. Out of the meats, I wish the spareribs were a bit more tender, but they were delicious as well. The sides were good too. The most memorable side was the beans. My wife really liked the beans. Not your typical baked beans as they had different types of beans in there and didn't taste like they were from the 'can'. Prices are fair, not too expensive, but not cheap either. Would def be back for some more BBQ. read more

Place is right on Highway 50 between Aldie and Middleburg, accessible from cross highways 15 going 50 East or Gum Spring going 50 West. Place is rustic w/ ample seatings and own parking lot upfront facing 50. An alternative to Mission BBQ, but tastier brisket for sure in my opinion. My family and I ordered take out last night and we werent disappointed. We ordered at like 530 on a Saturday night and thankfully they still had brisket but I guess that's the new normal during the quarantine. We got 1/2 pound of brisket, a pound of pulled pork and a family size macaroni and cheese. It was all excellent. There are only two BBQ sauce choices which kind of stinks but I'm off the opinion that all BBQ is different and just because one place has 30 sauces doesn't mean they all should or do. I'm generally not a huge BBQ fan but me and some of my friends stopped by here this weekend and enjoyed it. I got the Brisket and Pull Pork platter which came with 2 sides. I went for the Baked Beans and Potato Salad. Nothing really stood out as I find most BBQ places to taste the same. I feel you can really only screw up the moisture and tenderness but I'm no BBQ expert. The Spicy Squirrel sauce was popular with my friends. The food came out fast which was great. Damn. Down in Virginia visiting some relatives, we took a drive to try out some of the wineries and cideries nearby and decided to stop at HammerDown on the way home. I read a bit of the story about HammerDown being a food truck that converted to a restaurant and started licking my chops - most restaurants that come from outgrown food trucks are amazing in my experience. HammerDown has a really unique building that looks like an old car garage (it actually might be) and the building kind of flows into the outside seating area really nicely through an overhead garage door. The line moved quickly on the Saturday afternoon we visited and the food didn't take long to hit our trays. 4 of us decided to order platters with mixed meats and sides. HammerDown has a variety of sauces and heat levels to try and provides big squeeze bottles of the various types. I enjoyed the thinner, Carolina style, though I can't recall its name. Here's some quick opinions on the items we tried: Pulled Pork - good Chicken - whoa! this was fantastic. Ribs - my wife almost fought me for these. They were that good. Sausage - good Brisket - excellent Mashed Potatoes - buttery and perfect Mac n Cheese - good, nothing to write home about Greens - very good The seating area was fairly small but comfortable and we enjoyed our meal outside. They have craft brews on tap if you're feeling like throwing back an IPA with your brisket. Prices were fairly typical for BBQ joints with a platter of 2 meats and sides costing about $20. You will leave with leftovers though, so the price is right. This is a great place to stop to refill your belly after doing some wine tastings or if going out for a drive to some of the scenic areas nearby. read more

1. Parking lot: if you are here on a motorcycle, let it be known that the lot is gravel and it's loose, posing a safety hazard to those of us on two wheels. Use caution. 2. Food: I got brisket and chicken, my husband got pork and sausage. Brisket was moist and flavorful, the standout on the plates. Chicken was sliced not pulled, seasoned well but a bit dry. Pork and sausage were fine, nothing to write home about. Cole slaw was average, vinegary and crunchy but bland. Green beans were made from fresh but their bright color was more interesting than either the actual flavor or texture. Three sauces: original, spicy, and vinegar; the spicy sauce was tasty, the original a bit basic. 3. Tea: weak, y'all. I love iced tea and theirs was just bad. 4. Value: over $50 for lunch for two. Overall: Not worth the trip out from Fairfax. Mission or Willards definitely have the advantage. read more

Got the 2 meat & 2 sides and chose ribs, brisket, Mac & cheese, and Kens Collards. This is my usual picks when trying new bbq places. Start with the bad. I almost wanted to return the mac and cheese. Once I got home decided it just wasn't that good to finish. Kens Collards seemed very fresh and I finished it. However, it was a little low on flavor, but it's greens so I'm not too picky on that. The ribs fell off the bone and was not dry. Could of had more flavor, but that's what the sauce was for. Ribs though I prefer to be eaten with sauce already applied. Get that saucer face with it! It was above average though. The brisket was very tender, yet not dry. Dipping it into the sauce complimented it just perfect. As many Yelpers stars their brisket is arguably the best in the area! Overall I have to give a 3. I'd give a 3.5, but the Mac and cheese fail can't happen at a bbq joint. With joints like Willard's and Mission BBQ as my favorite competitors. I'd come here if Im driving past. Not worth the extra price and gas getting here... Plus no corn bread! read more

The bbq sauce was actually really good but I found many of the pieces of brisket to be dry. I did get a really good bite as well but there were too many dry pieces. Also the staff was lovely. But I waited into two different lines until I got my food that I called in.... I called in an order and walked in and waited in line. Then I was told to go to the online line. I waited there. I had given up on finding great chicken at any BBQ joint until I had some of the grilled stuff at Hammerdown, Astonishing seasoning, perfectly tender and juicy and proof that it can be done so well! Easily my favourite part of this meal! Honestly though, everything I had here was great. The smoked sausages, the St Louis Ribs as well as the sauces (there was a variety ranging from a vinegary tasting one, a classic bbq sauce as well as one which had some more heat to it). They forgot to provide us with cornbread, which I was pretty excited about given how good the rest of the meal was! The sides we did get were reasonable too - slaw, green beans - but I wasn't really here for that and the mains set an excellent standard to any BBQ I'll have in the future! read more

We don't eat here often, usually because the times we're craving BBQ are the days they are closed. Nevertheless, we really like their food. We get carryout so I can't vouch for the ambiance--it's a roadside stand of sorts--but I know lots of "regulars" who grab a sandwich or platter and hang out at one of their picnic tables and love it. Our service has always been good. The people are very busy (speaks to the demand for their food), but appropriately accommodating. The location is removed from any residentially-convenient area (on Highway 50 west of South Riding), but it's worth the extra few minutes' driving. And, if you're in the mood for BBQ, it's the closest place, so it's bonus that it's actually GOOD! read more

Disappointing, especially for the hype around this place. I got the brisket sandwich with collard greens and my friend got the pastrami sandwich with green beans. The pastrami was decent with good flavor and was moist, however, the green beans were near flavorless and not super tender; definitely needed some seasoning. Now for the brisket; one of the most disappointing brisket experiences i've had. To begin, there was MAYBE 2 pieces of brisket on the bun, the smallest brisket portion i've ever had. AND..... it was super dry, I mean dry dry; definitely not worth it. The collard were lack luster and again, needed some seasoning. This place was really cute - surprised. I went because I was carving some brisket and one review had mentioned that it was the best. From the outside it looks like a little house with a pit on side - visible from the parking lot out front. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The bar is really big and looked like it was doing well. The cafeteria style ordering was nice. Everything looked like reclaimed barnwood - very trendy - we loved it. The scales are there to weigh the food cut to order (we had brisket and chicken). 2 lbs of brisket and 1 lb of chicken was pretty hefty, but I soon realized that most of the weight from the brisket was from the fat cap that was left on when cooked. Brisket has a really big fatty piece that you have to trim a bit if it doesn't look like it will melt in when BBQing... and this was just left on resulting in some huge pieces of fat that took up more than what we would have wanted in our brisket package. The seasoning on the brisket was very good, and the chicken had a kick to it that our kids could handle - delicious as well. The smoke ring around the brisket was only on 1 side of the meat (at least it looked that way). I like a big smoke ring on all sides with the bark just really contrasting that tender meat, but we didn't really get that here. We had Mac N cheese (no mustard in it - thank goodness!) Collard Greens and Green beans - VERY delicious - we needed a tub of it. The brisket was dry and lacked flavor even though it was from the point. I am a BBQ snob so I was disappointed they didn't turn the point into burnt ends & instead served it in a platter. The ribs were very fatty with little actual rib meat, but I liked the dry rub. They have good side options. The mushrooms were good, but the collard greens just needed a bit more vinegar. The decor was nice and they have a good setup. It's just too bad the actual BBQ was such a let down. read more

LET ME TELL YOU!!!! this place serves the FRESHEST, TENDEREST (don't care if that's not a word), MOST DELICIOUS BRISKET AND RIBSSSSS I HAVE EVER HAD. Do yourself a favor, order the brisket and ribs. come with two sides. The Brisket was soooo soooooo soooooo tender, the taste is right off the freaking grill/smoker whatever it came out of. Hammerdown' Brisket anatomy is a pefectly coated with crispy pepper rub, which gived the meat that smoky crispy crust as you bite in. Juicy and fatty all over. Green beans are solid but I'm not keen on the corn bread, baked beans, chocolate chip cookie, or the Mac and cheese. That's oaky because I'm coming back for the brisket and pork. Saturday afternoon pickup. The food was good. Not great, not mind blowing, but also not terrible. Not sure the last time I had "terrible" bbq. If you know how to slow cook, I would assume it's always going to be at least "good". The Mac n cheese looks plain. But I enjoyed the taste. My wife hated it. Thought it tasted metallic or something. Neither one of us could identify the unique flavor. But I didn't hate it. Her sides of green beans and potato salad she said were also both "good". As were our entrees of pulled pork and brisket. Some dry pieces. Most were moist and flavorful. The REAL issue was customer service. Did curbside pickup. Called when we were out front. They said they would bring it out. And didn't. We waited 27 minutes. Just thinking that they were busy. When I finally reluctantly went in, they said they couldn't bring it out because they were short staffed. Despite the fact people were just standing around. Why did they said they would bring it out when they said they "couldn't"? How long would it have taken before someone finally opened the front door and waved at us? Hours???? Anyway, that experience sucked. Maybe you'll have a better one. read more
