My husband and I were extremely disappointed with our recent visit. What makes this experience especially frustrating is that we've eaten here before and it was genuinely fabulous, so something has clearly changed, and unfortunately not for the better. The sushi this time around was borderline inedible. The fish tasted old and poorly handled, with many of the rolls seeming like a strange mash of imitation crab mixed with tired tuna and salmon. Everything was coated in an odd, heavy seasoning that tasted more like a carne asada-style sauce than anything you'd expect with sushi. The rice was just as problematic. The texture was completely wrong, unevenly cooked and inconsistently seasoned. Some bites were mushy while others were dry, throwing off the structure and balance of the rolls entirely. What's also puzzling is that the restaurant was fairly busy, which was surprising given the quality of the food we were served. When I reached the point where I couldn't eat any more of the rolls we had ordered, I asked for a simple spicy tuna roll, hoping it might be safer. Even that was concerning. I'm honestly not convinced it was tuna. The texture and consistency were off, and the flavor was strange, as if extra seasoning was added to mask fish that wasn't fresh. To top it off, we were served crackers that were clearly stale and overly salty. Overall, this felt like a place that has slipped significantly in quality. While the service has always been a little lackluster, we've had every roll on the menu, almost every appetizer, and enjoyed the chavelas that are always ice cold! But yesterday the end of my meal was topped off with a very disgusting surprise. I went to the restroom while my husband took care of the check and only after using the toilet while washing my hands did I notice that there was feces smeared and dripped all down the side of the toilet. I tried to get the attention of our server to discretely say something but she didn't see me I guess; so unfortunately I had to go up to the sushi bar and say out loud what I saw and show the photo. The server kinda laughed it off and yelled into the kitchen. Nobody came, then a man who was sitting at the sushi bar eating and drinking (who knows if he even works there) stood up and said he'd take care of it with no apologies or anything. I felt completely disgusted and my meal was ruined. We just spent nearly $100 on food just so I can see the unsanitary bathroom and just have my concerns laughed off. I always tip at least 20% in cash, but unfortunately I did leave no tip, and that's my very first time in my life doing that. I can't complain about the food tasting good, but it makes you think... if the bathroom is like that are they letting the kitchen go that way too? Believe me I don't write bad reviews and want to be labeled a "Karen", but I was craving sushi so bad, but really felt like vomiting after seeing what I saw. Ordered for takeout. $68 on straight up garbage. Super chewy beef teriyaki. Dry yakisoba. Crunchy roll looks like something from a fair (deep fried?). Decent portions I guess. It's not hard to make Japanese food. Not sure how they'd mess it up this bad. It's almost inedible. The yakisoba noodles taste like the pan and oil it was cooked in, rather than any seasoning. This use to be our spot to have sushi, this last experience changed everything. They were more entertained with guest who were drinking then making sure tables were being served. They got one of our orders wrong they missed the cream cheese, instead of redoing it they destroyed the roll and added the cream cheese. Keep in mind we only had taken one piece of the roll and thats how we noiced there wasnt any cream cheese. Rolls took forever to come out and it wasn't even as busy as it's been other times. Once the roll came back it fell apart, they said they were giving us the same roll. Completely disappointed with this experience. No refills offered. Wow just had dinner there and it was amazing! The baked salmon roll had the best flavor combination, with the fish, the sauces, the perfectly cooked salmon on top; easily the best baked salmon roll I've ever had. We got the albacore roll too and it was so fresh and delicious, and good size portions, I don't have a single complaint. My family and I have been coming here since they opened and the quality of the SERVICE has gone down hill, especially when the owner is not present. I was there this afternoon, March 15, and it took staff over 10 minutes to take our drink order. When we asked the waitress to take our food order she told us she'd be back, then she asked her male coworker if he had taken our order to which he responded NO. The wait staff continued to ignore our table and did not take our order even after asking. This caused my party to leave. The staff was aware of the discomfort and they did not even offer an apology or try to resolve the lack of proper service. Going out to eat for food these days is a crapshoot. And in this case, it is crap! Tough fish that was inedible and medicinal. I ordered the sushi boat and had two pieces of fish which were rubbery and hard. We also ordered a baked salmon roll, one bite, and the fish tasted off and so we sent it back. And that was what I mean by medicinal. Furthermore salmon is not opaque , but more of coral, like salmon! It is bright and full of life. It's very clear that the quality of product here is the lowest on the spectrum. On top of the deplorable food, it took 30 minutes for us to be served and we weren't served our meals at the same time. Once I sent back my salmon roll the chef behind the sushi counter asked me why I had sent back the role and I had told him that the item was medicinal. Instead of letting it go or offering me something else, he told me that people don't send back food there. Well, this person did. The establishment has no pride in their quality of product. We stopped here on the recommendation of a local friend who spoke of it very positively. Unfortunately our experience did not live up to her own. Ordering take-out for two, we had the chicken teriyaki dinner ($15.99 - comes with miso soup and rice), an order of chicken fried rice ( $11.99), and a spicy ramen soup ($11.99). On the upside, they don't skimp on the portions - each portion was large, as seen in the attached photos. On the downside, the chicken itself in the chicken teriyaki was dry and chewy - a big disappointment. The vegetables in the teriyaki were good, but the large side of white rice was just "okay" - nothing to write home about - as was the small cup of miso soup. The ramen soup also came in a large portion - looked like a quart - but they had put the noodles inside the soup as opposed to on the side, which is how ramen usually comes. Because the noodles were already in the soup (see attached photo), they were soggy, when they should have been crisp.The large portion of chicken fried rice unfortunately had the same chicken as what was in the teriyaki, and we also found it to be disappointingly dry and chewy. The rice was okay. I really dislike writing even partially negative reviews, and I am more than happy when I am able to share a positive dining experience and recommend a business - especially a smaller business like this one - wholeheartedly. Sadly that's not the case with Hamachi Sushi. Maybe because they are primarily a sushi place, their sushi is better than anything we ordered. I give them 3 stars for portion size, the vegetables in the teriyaki and what was just "okay' - but that's really being generous considering the taste and texture of the chicken in two of the dishes and what they did to the ramen soup. With so many other dining choices (Japanese restaurants among them) in the Coachella Valley, we would not return here. read more

I do not understand the good reviews for this place. Soooo many problems with both service and food. Went in on a Wednesday around 3 pm. Took well over 30 minutes to get out our first 2 (out of 3 ordered) rolls when there were only 3 other tables seated. Their albacore was stringy in texture and tasted like it had gone bad (sent that roll back). About 10 minutes after that we received the "Hamachi tower". This was chosen as our third roll because it was one of the few rolls that was spicy without having spicy tuna. The texture of spicy tuna is very off-putting to me so I am VERY CAREFUL to never order a roll with it. It arrived to our table, I ate the topping (pieces of shrimp sushi) and wouldn't you know it the roll portion was NOT made with spicy crab as the menu indicated but spicy tuna. We sent this back. The employee said "that's just how it's made and nobody has ever complained before". That's NOT how it's made according to their menu so either change your menu or let people know of the potential sub when they order it. All in all 2 people shared one rice free roll and it took over an hour between arrival and walking out. I left just as hungry as when I got there. read more

The sushi is on par with several Japanese restaurants; the chef was so nice that he even gave me items on the house. The service was excellent and my order was ready in such a short time. Although it's not your typical Japanese sushi experience, the food is all that matters. The restaurant was wholesome, heartwarming, and I can tell you that the chef was passionate about his work.
