Ham radio stores are few and far between, even if they are part of a chain. Service was attentive, and Big Al was so friendly and knowledgeable. You will find a good selection, but few Chinese products. The products are good value, less expensive than Amazon. Good selection of connectors, antennas, etc. I don't live in the Dallas metroplex, but this store is close to Dallas Love Field. read more

I have only dealt with this store by phone since I live in Indiana . But, I called this store directly in April of 22 looking for the unicorn! A Yaesu FT-991A... After looking for weeks I began calling each HRO store directly checking if anyone had one in stock. Luckily I got in touch with Eddie at the Plano store. He was very helpful and said I caught him at the perfect time, he had just received a shipment. I placed my order and it arrived at my home 2 days later. Eddie even placed a follow up call to make sure it arrived and was as it should be, which it was. Purchased a YAESU FTDX101D and could not be happier with the purchase. Sales people are very helpful. I had many questions for them. They knew the answers and helped with getting my new transceiver set up. I also bought a new end fed dipole for mobile operations and an antennae tuner. Previously I had taken in an older transceiver in for testing and they checked it out under load and with their antenna to make sure it was operating properly. That is why I went back to them when I wanted a newer more up to date transceiver. I highly recommend their stores in Georgia and Texas as that is where I have had my experiences. read more

This is a good store with nice people, but they do one thing that's absolutely terrible. Depending on what you order, they will require a a signature for delivery. I was able to override that requirement, however, they should tell people BEFORE they finalize the order that a signature will be required. Many people might want to have things sent to their office as opposed to their home address. Before ordering, call them by telephone, and find out if a signature will be required. read more

Stay away. Difficult to work with unless you are one of their friends who has a radio license. If wanting to find out how to become a license radio operator or wanting to find out more about how to get involved, go somewhere else. I'm a long-haul driver, and only take a few days every two months to wind-down and re-supply. I have been studying for my Technicians and General exams for a couple of weeks, and had intended to have tested by now. No testing locally, and it was while I was waiting for my order to be filled, that I saw only two online testing slots available between today (25-Aug-2020) and November. None the less, this was my only opportunity to get a radio I had picked out so I will have something useful when I test and get my call-sign. Besides, I love listening, and have the discipline not to press the PTT until I am legal. It is a busy time for ham radio. Besides the critical shortage of open exam spots, I noticed every online store shows the mobile transceivers I am considering are out of stock, but the HT I picked is available everywhere, and HRO was closest to my Fort Worth starting point. I liked the price, and I liked their website telling me what was in stock (and what was not) before I ordered. I also liked the way they handled the COVID-19 issue. So I ordered from my truck, set delivery as "Will call" and took a rented car to the store. I read the scathing reviews, so did not expect much. Sometimes, however, I just stumble into the best, and that is what happened yesterday Once parked, I called the store to say I had arrived and to ask if my order was ready. Jeff Locke answered the phone, and told me he would check on my order and call me back. He did call back soon after and apologized that my order was not quite finished, that they had many orders that had come in, and were trying to hurry, so it would be a few more minutes and then he would meet me at the door. He came out about five minutes later, and we went through my bag of new toys: Yeasu FT3DR handy-talky, Diamond RH77CA 2m/70cm antenna, an adapter for that antenna, a corded mic (so I can use my radio while driving in my rig (we can hold a mic, but not a phone or a radio), and a WIRES-X cable kit. It was all there and the receipt, and Jeff turned to go back inside. I knew they were busy. He was professional with me, but his mind was focused on what he had to do *next.* Still, I am new, just invested a moderate sum in a new hobby, and had questions. I said, "I know you are busy, but I do have a few questions, and could use your help." Even through his mask, I could see his expression change from a focus on thousand things that needed to be done, to a warm, almost happy, focus on me. He answered all of my questions. For example, that with no call sign yet, could I even *listen to* my new radio, since I knew it required a call-sign to be entered upon turning it ON the first time. (Yes. Leave it blank, or enter a few random characters). Was I missing anything I would need once I had my call-sign. (No, but for truck use, I will find I want an external antenna on the truck). When I get my HF (all band, really Mobile radio, are the screwdriver antenna too heavy to take the wind loading of a truck on the highway (almost certainly not, Jeff answered-- but I knew of otter options just in case). We went on like this for several minutes, and having answered all my questions, like the Elmer that he is. I saw his name-tag, but asked for a card, because I already knew I was going to write this review. He earned it. Thank you HRO, and thank you, Jeff Locke. There are five employees working in this business that I can see from the locked door. It is 4 pm. I was told when a man came to it that I needed to shop online. I told him that unfortunately I needed a human to help me with my purchase decision. He shrugged his shoulders with a strange stare as I turned and walked away. I purchased an Ameritron ALS-1306 from HRO Plano Texas. They were out of the amp and said it would be on back order and would take a week to week and half to receive. I received the amp in three days. I installed in station and checked on all bands and amp worked great. I called CQ and a fellow answered me and we began QSO. Two minutes into QSO the power supply blew with loud pop and smoke. I called HRO and they said they would call Ameritron as they did not have any 1306's in stock. The next day Ameritron called me and wanted my details and they in turn sent me a new powersupply via Fedx which I received the next day along with a prepaid shipping label to return bad power supply. This is for the Plano Store and I gotta tell you, I just got off the phone with them and "Mr. Personality" they are not. Two Words.... Dale Carnegie. I've been doing business with them for several years and was glad to see HRO open a store a few miles from my QTH. Happy because I despised the other Amateur Radio Store a few blocks away. They're less than One Star (if they're still there). Due to the Chinese Virus they are only doing Online Orders or Curbside Pickup. Which I suppose is the way things are these days. You can't go in and browse, which is always a fun pass time. I have also owned a business for 40 years and if I spoke to my customers as if I really wasn't interested, I probably would have dried up and blew away long ago. Maybe being from Texas I expected a bit more Southern Hospitality. I have in my 89 years on this planet met some uncaring folks. But the manager of the Plano store takes the cake. I unpacked a radio I had bought a few weeks before, put it on the air, worked fine 2 days. 3 days later, while in a QSO, a hardware failure and several features in the radio became inoperative. Checked with Yaesu service department, and they guided me thru a factory reset. Not a software or settings problem. I called the Plano store, explained the situation. No offer to help, even though I explained this was my only radio. Only used it 3 days. No sympathy or "the customer counts" could be detected. Up to me to solve the problem. Send it in. Just want to give a shout out to the nice guys at Ham Radio Outlet in Plano. Outlet doesn't do the the store justice. This is a radio operators magamart! I got my ham radio license 9 1/2 years ago and never got a radio because they seemed a bit expensive. After seeing TJ's post on NextDoor.com, I decided to go in and see what was on offer. I wanted something I could put on my desk or take in the car and finally went for a handheld which suited my needs. I was never pushed anything that was out of my price range, in fact, I wish they'd asked me a bit more about what I wanted and maybe gave me a few more options, but still, I did ask questions and I'm happy with what I selected. The Technician ham radio license isn't that difficult, you have to get something 26/35 4 answer multiple choice questions right. If disaster strikes and power, internet, and phone service is out, ham radio is likely the only communication medium we'll have. It is a convenient place if you live close by, but the customer service is horrible. Personal Communication skills are very lacking...both online and in store. This place could be so much better if the company would invest in customer service training. Store layout is not set up to just come in and browse and find anything...you pretty much need to know what you are looking for since everything is in boxes. Company owners need to go to business school and learn about things that could improve their sales dramatically. I understand because of the ongoing pandemic stores have adjusted their sales and service. I also understand that some people have bad days sometimes but this week I got 2 totally different experiences while visiting the store. I placed an order and it was being dropshipped to the store. So I go to the store this past Friday to pick up I was told it's being shipped. I made a mistake but the employee that helped me was very helpful and understanding. Went today to pick up my items. I got a vm telling me I could pick up today. Show up knock at door. The employees looked at me and kept doing whatever is they were doing. After waiting about 3 minutes one of them walks to the door staring at me like I'm about to rob them. I'm latino I know that look we get, the hold my purse closer when I walk by look. Anyways the guy was like asked me what I need no greeting just what. I told him I'm picking up for give them my name. They bring my 10 items and just hands me the stuff and immediately locks the door. I tell signal to get this attention and he barely opens the door. I'm 3 feet from the door. I ask him can I buy the rest they have he no. Begins to lock the door then says no you can't pay cash. So I get my cc and tell him I only have card he says no. I was like OK. Then he says you have to place the order online. And I'm like really. He said you can call the store. And I was like call the store in disbelief I said OK and he closed the door quick. I begin to walk away start calling the store and another light skin customer walks up knocks they inmediatly open the door wide give the person the stuff don't ask for ID and tell him Thanks for coming. So I hang up and go to frys across the street. Idk what was more upsetting the way I was treated or having to go to frys. I know you guys are used to a certain group of customers buying your items but this is the 21st century no need to act like that. read more
