The Armory was one of the homes of the Texas' 49th Armored Division which was one of the National Guard units activated during the Berlin Wall Crisis. The two M48 tanks out front are a reminder of those times. The park has some of the best yellow cat fishing anywhere along the Trinity. The small dam generally has at least one or two fishermen there trying to coax a few catfish into their ice chests. A ramp was recently placed to allow paddlers a way in and out of the gently flowing river. The nearby LB Houston Bike Trail and lots of other places to fish, wander and picnic make this park a secret gem. The spring wildflowers are very picturesque.

The area is significant as this was a low point in the river before the Trinity River's flooding was tamed, thus it allowed others from the Dallas area and villages to cross the river... ostensibly on their way to California :) There's 2 sections to the park with California Crossing Rd dividing the two. Together, it's 490 acres of park on the border between Irving and Dallas. The southern part is small encompassing the southern trailhead for the North segment of Campion Trail. It has benches and a portapotty. There's parking (not much, about 10 spaces) and the entrace is right off of Riverside. The other part is larger with more wide open spaces, with the LB Houston bike and hike trail across California Crossing Rd. I don't recall seeing a water fountain at this park which is unusual as a trailhead park.

So this past week as I was visiting my family in Dallas, I walked over to Flag Pole Hill. It was the right time to do it (early June), as the hill was covered in wildflowers and the view was great. The park has some short trails, picnic tables, and a playground. The park was established in 1929 and the covered pavilion in the park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. While I was walking around, I saw lots of people beginning runs from the parking lots at the park on the hill (you can extend from this park onto the trails around White Rock Lake from here). It's a great park to wander around and explore or to start a longer run/walk/hike to/through White Rock Lake. Check it out if you haven't before! It took me too long to check it out!

I like to come here to work on my inside 200' shots or if I'm short on time: can play in about 40 minutes. Not in the best of neighborhoods, but overall, still safe. I've hit the basket a few times on the tee shot and am hopeful I'll get an ace eventually. Definitely don't need a big arm to play here. If you're decent, you can birdie almost every hole.

A fine, neighborhood mixed use trail that follows Fish Creek from one end in the Oak Hollow section…read moreof Grand Prairie on the Dallas County side of the power lines (i.e. at Claremont's east most point, down to the end of Dartmouth St.) From there, it winds along Westward through the Enchanted Forest, past the basketball court and small playground area, and ambles by the gazebo, another play area, and the fields for folk who favor feet for ball sport. Benches, a bridge, a brook (perhaps), brambles, a bevy of brick houses, babies in strollers, boys and girls bestride the balustrades of a bigger play castle, then another bridge (beyond which there be boulders) bringing us to another neighborhood (Arlington's Kingswood development) and another bench. Onward, we breeze through a stand of trees just beyond the bridges of 360 bringing us back up behind Grandy's, Kroger and Sonic. (Don't forget, Brooklyn's Pizza which boasts a bit of movie magic in a most unique mural.) Now it's time to pick up the pace. Snack time is done so it's time to run (or walk or bike or any and all else that you might think is fun.) There's more twists and turns, another bridge or two (e.g. New York and Collins, too) and then it's the dog park, then Silo, then (whew!) we break out past a few trees into Craven's Park up to Matlock where the trail ends--You're through! There's Braums up a little north and Sublet down south. And if that's not enough for you... well, then just shut my mouth! It's about seven miles, end to end, of mixed use trail that is not too challenging but provides plenty of pleasant places to perambulate, promenade, pedal and ponder. Joe Bob says, "Check it out."

It makes a connection to the stadium area from the city's downtown, but also runs a considerable length away from the city, granting it considerable utility. There are a few sights, but the aesthetics are nothing to write home about overall. It's still good to have this sort of infrastructure in urban areas to encourage walking and biking.

This is a nice trail with wide pathways that eventually connect to White Rock Lake. There are some…read morepretty, quiet, fully "back to nature" parts of the trail, while other parts take you over busy road ways, etc. But, it is a city trail/park so that is to be expected. I like the fact that the trail is clean and most folks give you a friendly smile or "hi" when they run or bike past. It's almost like having a tiny piece of Austin inside Dallas. I really enjoy the trail on early weekday evenings and early weekend mornings. It's pretty quiet during these times. My suggestion is to avoid "busy times" like weekend afternoons. The trail gets packed with kids, dogs, families (rolling 10 or more deep, LOL!), and tons of roller bladers, skater boarders, etc on weekend afternoons.
