I like the fact that the trail is clean and most folks give you a friendly smile or "hi" when they run or bike past. It's almost like having a tiny piece of Austin inside Dallas. I really enjoy the trail on early weekday evenings and early weekend mornings. It's pretty quiet during these times. My suggestion is to avoid "busy times" like weekend afternoons. The trail gets packed with kids, dogs, families (rolling 10 or more deep, LOL!), and tons of roller bladers, skater boarders, etc on weekend afternoons.

This is a Dallas Park and Recreation Nature Trail, located within the Great Trinity Forest in…read moresoutheast Dallas. It's listed as 1.6-miles long, but it's unclear which parts of the trail equal that distance. The trail-head is located at the southern end of Bexar Street. Plan to go when you can also visit Bonton Farms, located where you'll park. Bonton Farms is open Mon-Fri 9:30-3:30 and Sat 9-noon. If you remember bug spray, the Texas Buckeye Trail provides an enjoyable walk through some dense growth approaching the banks of the Trinity River. There's a concrete path and a narrow, well-marked, trail that, not surprisingly, was muddy in parts. Near the river, the trail was closed (caution-taped off) because of all the recent rains, so we couldnt get to the Buckeye Grove. On the concrete path there is a barrier blocking the last part which leads to the river. (See Tim O.'s picture) When the river had one of its floods, the banks were washed away causing the sidewalk to collapse (see my photo). Potentially dangerous, yes, which is why it's blocked. Hopefully access to river views will be re-engineered and re-introduced in the near future. This review coming from a woman who adores an out and back but this solid 9 mile loop can really…read morehold its own to one. I love that if you needed to hop on the hampster wheel you could loop this bad boy 2,3,4+x and get in some respectable mileage. I've only looped it once which imo is a pretty lame but it is what it is. I have a much closer out and back route that I can hit for higher mileage without driving which will always be my preference. I have however been on this trail twice in the past month, once for the marathon and a week or so later when my son came to visit. It is a gorgeous run, but I have a water feature and lovely trees/wildlife on my local trail near me, so the trade off is driving which is hard to justify unless I loop it at least twice (coming soon). Parking is free, terrain varies over bridges, gravel, smoother concrete, areas of dirt trail etc. If you have any outdoor enthusiasts in town for a visit, it's a solid option to get them outdoors.

North Shore Trail has become one of my fave places to escape for a few hours. It was my first trek…read moreon these trails, and even though I'm used to climbing mountains when I hike, navigating a hilly terrain full of rocks and tree roots was its own kind of challenge. It definitely keeps you on your toes in a different way. I love how the trail winds through the trees, opens up to peaceful lake views, and gives you just enough difficulty to make the scenery feel earned. I usually start near Murrell Park, and that stretch has some of the prettiest spots. Lots of quiet coves, shaded paths and little pockets where you can stop and just listen to the water. You'll see plenty of wildlife, too. I've run into deer more than once. The trail can get rocky and narrow in places especially with mountain bikers flying through, so staying alert is a must. It will definitely keep you engaged instead of just strolling on autopilot. What I appreciate most is how peaceful the hike feels even when others are out enjoying the trail. North Shore Trail always delivers a sense of calm and connection to nature.
