I am completely confident that I reviewed the correct business. My original review is accurate, honest, and still reflects my experience. Original review: This salon butchered my hair for $60-80 and then banned me from ever receiving my promised "fix". In the salon chair I began coming down with a flu, and it was really horrible and hit me hard and fast. I couldn't really tell how bad my hair really was until 2 or 3 days later when I felt human again. I called the salon after looking at my hair from all angles clearly for the first time, trying not to cry because I was so upset at what I was seeing. I had originally asked for an A-line cut. This is what I received. The owner asked me to email a photo showing my haircut, so l did. She then told me she DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH MY HAIR..... I can laugh about it now but l sure was devastated when it happened. So after being dismissed I decided to open up a case with the BBB to try and rectify the problem since the owner wouldn't help me and was quite rude to me for no real reason I could see, considering this was not my fault. She tried blaming me since I was sick and didn't call them immediately. The salon owner told the BBB they would give me a free haircut to fix the problem. Ok, I accept that from another stylist, sure. I'm not looking to rip them off, I just want normal looking hair like I paid for. When I tried calling the salon to make an appointment for a fix a while later (brave, looking back) the person on the phone said I wasn't allowed there and nobody there would cut my hair! I didn't curse at these people, yell at them, or do anything disrespectful just to be clear. I saw this studio when I was walking by and they were busy so I figured they must do hair well. I scheduled a consult and haircut, done together. Liz was nice but very much focused on the conversations of her co-workers which was annoying. I was concerned when she sat down to do my haircut as I've never had a stylist sit to make sure my hair was even. It was not. The way she blew out my hair concealed how uneven the cut was. I was growing out an A-line haircut and the back was finally shoulder length. When she cut the front of my hair, the face framing pieces are easily 2 inches off. read more

I ask for a balayage and I was there for 6 hours to come out looking like trash The person doing my hair didn't even know how to hold the curling iron. I am very upset with the services and can't believe i have to walk around like this. This place used to be a great place to go. This salon ruined my virgin hair. I went in requesting that my hair be bleached; with full knowledge that it may take a few sessions to completely be the blonde that I wanted but with hopes that we could begin the process. I signed a contract stating that I understood that there might be breakage or damage to my hair, but never once was I or warned that my stylist Ashley would be incompetent or allow me to leave with neon orange bangs, oranges patches throughout myself hair or dime size cheetah spots in it. Never once was I told that my stylist felt that she was not competent enough to complete this job, but that was obviously the case. She left my entire bangs sitting out of the processor and as a result they were destroyed. When I expressed concern, I was told I would have to make another appointment to come back and have it fixed and promptly rushed out the door. I was forced to pay $600 to leave with no product and orange hair. I did not trust them to fix it so I went elsewhere where I had to pay another $300 to have it fixed elsewhere. When I called to cancel this salon redoing my hair I received no answer, and I was unable to leave a voicemail which I was told was due to the holidays. I was then blamed for this with the salon saying that I had not called to reschedule despite multiple attempts to contact them in the days leading up. I was advised by the other salon to call and request my money back asking to pay only for the product due to the egregious condition the second salon found my hair in. Upon speaking with the owner however, I was refused a refund, regardless of how poor the quality of work, and regardless of the resulting expense to me and emotional distress this caused right before Christmas. I have no idea how any woman, let alone, business owner, could honestly look at this work, and the state of my hair, and say that this was okay or that it was work they wanted to stand behind, but I would strongly caution any person who is considering going to the salon to reconsider. read more

After feeling rather confident in what we talked about and Kiersten's proficiency, I made my actual appointment. If you want hair extensions or anything Liz is my girl. She has been doing my hair extensions, cuts, and colors 3 plus years now. My extensions always last forever. Liz takes her time and explains things to me thoroughly and what I love is they do not try to price gouge. I am a faithful loyal customer to Liz. It's Always a happy environment. All the ladies there are friendly. I have watched them all do amazing things to others hair while getting my hair done. No stars. Waste of time. I called on Tuesday requesting an appointment only if the stylist had availability to do the job either Thursday/Friday or Sunday afternoon. She said there were 3 stylist available and we scheduled an appointment with a consultation. She booked me with Hillary who was supposed to be a color specialist. My hair was red but I removed most of it with color oops box hair color removal. Upon arrival Hillary said she was going to put me in someone else's chair because she didn't know what to do. I moved chairs next to Hillary's and got the lady with the very short haircut. She said I would need. Bleach wash and would need to dye it brown to cover the orange from the hair remover. She said highlights were not possible at this stage. Then she said she also had no time to do my hair and everyone was booked all week except Saturday which I had a conference that day(today.) I specifically said I ONLY wanted an appt with someone available to do the work because I'm visiting from Florida till Monday. My time was not respected or valued. See photo. Worst run business I've ever encountered. It took me two months to get an appointment (I know, ridiculous, right?!?!?). The day before my appointment they call me and tell me I am not going to be a good fit for the salon. Because if I see her tomorrow for a CONSULT, then it's another two months to get the work done and I have my own hair (New taped) and they want to sell their own. I am so frustrated and ticked off. I want to blast to everyone how poorly run this salon is! Preciate' Charlene but that all is just a marketing ad. Bottom lie, you DO NOT want new clients, if so, appts would not be two months out. Have you thought about hiring more staff? Training them to be this elite group of stylists that you have? Two months to book your first appointment and I get called the day before to cancel. I recently moved to Vancouver/Portland area and needed to find a great stylist to replace my CA stylist.... Mind you, I'm very picky because of my coarse Asian hair! But when I moved here I felt adventurous and I found Charlene here on Yelp. I made the call and I met with her and told her "to go for it" (I had long mid back length hair). And now! I love my cut! and have been back now to have same cut done! She's amazing and knows just what to do. No one has cut my hair on the design of what my hair does naturally, which curls! I wanted to take it to a teal, knowing that it's a process to get from red to teal. Her work tonight is amazing. Thank you Brooke for being able to get me in for a last minute hair revival haircut! :) Everyone was super professional and informative. I appreciate Brooke being very honest with what is achievable with my hair and what is not. She listened to what my hair goals are, as I'm growing it out from an a-line bob to a mid-back length hairstyle once more. She gave me bangs and trimmed up my hair. I scheduled an appointment about a week out for a haircut and color consult. I arrived the evening of my appointment and they told me I wasn't on their books. Honestly, I was pretty frustrated - the receptionist asked me "Are you sure you called Halo for the appointment? Maybe you called the wrong salon." Probably not something I would say, but that's just me. They scheduled me that evening for an entire week out for the haircut, and another 2 weeks for hair dye. I required a haircut that week because I literally can't take a shred of time off for the entire month of October. I was too frustrated about my experience with the appointment that I cancelled my haircut and hair dye appointment. Then, today, I received a confirmation call today for my dye appointment that I absolutely cancelled last week, along with my haircut appointment. I am noticing a pattern of issues with scheduling based on a couple other reviewers' experiences. Charlene overheard what was going on when I arrived that night, and very graciously gave me a 20% off coupon for my next visit. I'm sorry to say I won't be using it. I very much wanted to experience what Halo has to offer but this irked me a bit too much...and I'm usually willing to give another chance. read more

I'd been going into Portland for years but decided to find a salon on my side of the river. I'm so glad I found Halo and Amber! For a few years, I had been using box color to dye my hair black. I was happy with the color but was ready for a change. Amber worked her magic and lightened my hair to a beautiful chocolate brown. I love my haircut, especially my new bangs. My hair is so shiny and I have been told the bangs make me look younger. Thank you, Amber, for making me look and feel beautiful! Everyone in the salon is friendly and welcoming. This is a review for the stylist - Kiersten Let me start by saying I am not a girly girl and going to salons is NOT something I enjoy. I do however need occasional help with my hair. I moved out of PDX a while back & I needed to find a stylist who could help me maintain my hair as I grow it back out. I read good reviews of Halo on yelp so I called and made an appointment with one of there lower cost stylists. Kiersten was very friendly, not overly chatty and listened to what I was trying to accomplish with my hair. She was able to give my super fine hair a very nice cut and trimmed my straight bangs very well. I have been back for a free bang trim once since my haircut. I was very pleased with the results and i will definitely be back. They have very reasonable rates for their stylists which for me is very important. YAY! read more

These women work to preserve the integrity and health of hair while still providing a vast range of services. I have been with Char for over 15 years, even driving to Vancouver when I lived in Seattle for seven years (after several failed attempts to find a local stylist that "gets" curls). She takes her time, sets realistic expectations, and does not go crazy with the scissors unless asked to do so. She also works with my very-sensitive skin to find color solutions that work for me. As a fellow business-owner, I also appreciate her customer service and professional demeanor when faced with difficult situations/customers. She remains calm and strives to find a win-win solution. This is the first time I have posted a review on any service, product etc...that should tell you how unhappy I am. I know there are a lot of good reviews on Halo but I also noticed that in the salon they offer free product to anyone who posts a positive review. I believe they are were not honest with me. Before I purchased some very expensive product from them I asked the girl at the desk TWICE if I could return it for a REFUND if I was not happy with it and she said "yes, absolutely" (had she not, I would have purchased product at Sephora or Ulta who both have excellent return policies). When I came back, two days later, to return the products the same girl said she had to check the return policy (something she didn't do when she was so anxious to sell me product). She then told me I could only get store credit, I reminded her I was told I could get my money refunded and she then called the owner who would not approve a refund, was clearly annoyed to be bothered and wouldn't talk to me. They were dishonest and I do not want to spend my money at a shop where I am being lied to in order to make a sale. DO NOT GO HERE! read more
