I had a color/cut in June for my naturally curly hair. The stylist asked me about my process for styling and then loudly shamed me for the crime of brushing it, while dry. (I have the Unbrush, it's incredible, I can de-tangle in less than 15 minutes). Seriously, people turned and looked. In my experience, curly hair experts cut it while dry and never stretch while trimming. She did not do it that way and the degree of lopsidedness that was obvious within 2 weeks was so disappointing. I emailed to see if they would fix it and they didn't respond. The color was good though. I'm finally working up the nerve to find someone to cut my hair again. read more

Went in for a curly cut with Erin Boyle, I asked for a rounded shape and for her to fix the back because it needed a lot of layering. I had just done my hair how I liked it, so she starts cutting away. What was suppose to be layering all around turned into a light little trim that took no real bulk off. We then go to the shampoo, conditioner, and restyling with gel(i tell her at the beginning that I ABSOLUTELY HATE gel and do no use it). After fully drying my hair it is all crunchy and not how I would ever style in my own. She keeps taking off a millimeter at a time asking how I like it. At this point I'm tired of sitting in this uncomfortable chair and I know I'm going to go home and fix it myself. After redoing my hair how I like it at home I see that she didn't do jack shit. She also gave me her card so I could contact her again. The only real use for that card is so I can put her name in this review. I can't believe this bullshit haircut was a month wait for disappointment. That money could have went to something that actually made me happy. read more

I have super curly hair snd have been so scared to let ANYBODY touch it, I'm 22 and have never had a real haircut. I finally made an appointment, and couldn't be happier. I didn't know my curls could be so cute! I've now had both Grace and Erin, and will definitely continue to go there. It's super cute there, and the staff is kind and they listen to what you want, they offer you water and tea, and their company is nice while getting your hair done. I came to visit Grace for a DevaCut on my combination 3A/B/C curls after I made the mistake of letting a friend in beauty school cut my hair, and let me tell you- I have never felt more at ease getting a haircut in my life. As a curly girl, I'm always prepared to hate my haircut at least a little, because nobody really knows how to properly cut curly hair. Not only did she take my terrible haircut and turn it into a work of beauty, but she also took the time to teach me how I can recreate the look myself on a daily basis. Not to mention the fact that the salon is gorgeous, welcoming, and very relaxing. Carla's relaxation massage was, hands down, the best relaxation massage I've ever had. Her touch was slow and unhurried; she really took her time. I also appreciated the warm table, warming buckwheat bags, and eye and neck pillow. I've had a lot of massages, and I've never had someone give me an eye pillow. It was a much appreciated touch. I also started the session with a full body scrub, which left me feeling moisturized and buffed smooth. I've received two Deva cuts from Erin, and I've been thrilled both times. Worst curly hair cut I've received in nearly ten years of going to salons that specialize in curly hair. The salon acknowledged that the stylist I was paired with was still in training and should not have done my hair on her own, but did not offer a partial refund or discount on future services. The person who styled my hair said she learned how to do curly hair by watching videos on Instagram of African Americans styling curly hair during the pandemic. The lack of training was apparent when I was done - she put so much product in my hair that my hair looked wet, and was heavy and sticky. I immediately washed my hair when I got home. Salon Birch is clean, calm and very relaxing. Super impressed with the attention to detail and Covid cleaning. This place was spotless and Grace was so attentive to cleaning during and after my service and the vibe is such that you know that is the standard for all the stylists. Grace gave me the best Curly haircut of my life! She is attentive and honored the lifestyle I have rather than trying to sway me into more maintenance and styling than my life can really fit in. For instance, she suggested adding some moisture when I was just wearing a scrub cap all day- instead of shaming me for not styling on my work days. She was knowledgeable about product, but not pushy in any way. She expertly guided me to what I needed and helped me in my quest to achieve "day two" hair. She explained styling every step of the way- which is half the battle with curls. In addition to being skilled, she was just sweet and down to earth. I was so comfortable in her chair. How does this place not have more glowing reviews. First, the place is stunningly well appointed inside. Not only does it look nice, it doesn't smell like chemicals have seeped into the walls and floor like some salons I've been to. It sounds like a minor thing, but I tend to be sensitive to smells and I notice. Erin was absolutely amazing. She asked a number of questions before we started and gave me a fabulous cut. I was a virgin to the DevaCut process and she was super patient with me during the process, to make sure I understood the steps, products, and reasons behind all of it, to recreate the look she was giving me. Wow and more wow! I have been going to Erin for over a year, might be closer to two years. She's amazing. My curls love her and if my curls are happy then I'm happy and you see there's a whole lot of happy in my life because of Erin and this salon. There are lots of stylists to suit you hair needs and the place is very nice. The wash sinks are so cool. Gone are the days of those weird sinks that hurt your neck. There's sort of a zen to these sinks. The only drawback is parking. But I think that less their fault and more the restaurant next door that has multiple parking lots but no one uses those. I cannot recommend Grace enough for curly cuts. She is the first person in my 30 years of life who I feel like knows how to handle my hair. I didn't know what to expect getting a cut specifically for curls, but I've been trying to let my hair be what it wants to be instead of fighting it and I am SO happy I decided to get this done. You can tell talking to her that she knows so so much about what she's doing, which made me so comfortable, but she's also very sweet and funny. She is the bees knees. The thing I really like about her the most is she'll ask how you're doing and make a little small talk but then lets you guide how much or how little you want to talk. Often times I find this pressure to constantly talk during a visit w/others. As a double process blonde, I am very selective about choosing a colorist. I saw Erin and was exceedingly pleased with my color AND cut. Erin was prompt, friendly and worked quickly on my color consulting with me the entire way. She gave me a crisp, clean blonde free of drabness and brassiness at a price that didn't break the bank. The salon was peaceful, clean and well appointed. My favorite feature of the place was the shampoo chairs which had neck and foot supports and made the shampoo process truly relaxing and enjoyable. I was lucky enough to come in for two services yesterday and I was amazed. First, the location and parking are convenient. They have decorated beautifully; it really feels like you've entered an oasis when you walk in. The owner and front desk staff are so sweet. First I had a massage with Carla, which was one of the best I've ever had. She took time at the beginning to talk about my problem areas, then focused a little more on those while working from my feet to my head. Overall an incredible and relaxing massage- I will definitely be back to see Carla. Next I had a hair cut and color with Melanie. You can tell she truly cares about her clients' happiness and tries to make you feel at home in her chair. I had some pictures for color inspiration and she was able to take my wishes and transform them into a really beautiful color with a cut to show it off. I've already gotten so many compliments. Basically, Melanie is a sweet, magical hair unicorn who will work until you're happy with your hair. I love her! I can't wait to go back to Urban Retreat! I would like to give a huge shout out to Carla Priddy, massage therapist at this salon. AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. She listens to your needs and goes above and beyond to give you the best massage. I've had a sugar scrub (ahh best ever), a deep tissue (I am severely fascia bound) and she completely relieved tightness in my lower back and glutes and I've been subject to her relaxation massage as well-true happiness afterward. I saw Candide for balayage highlights and a cut...my hair is very long. She took her time and really listened to what I wanted. Refused to dye my hair because it's been dyed before? How is everyone else in this world able dye their hair and the second time I dye my hair from dark back to blonde i get told they won't move forward and continue the lightening process.
