It turned out that one coil had shorted causing electrical issues and eventually we also recognized low compression on one bank, and that led to a diagnosis of timing belt slippage, bent valves and a replacement engine. Raoul found a used engine (50k miles) to save me money and when he put that in it had similar problems to the original engine. Raoul pulled that engine and got another. I received the truck yesterday and I am impressed, the company was fair about the pricing, taking my concerns into account, didn't try to nickel and dime me, and warranted his work and parts for a year. More than I expected for a used engine. It was expensive, but not what I imagined as the various problems continued to cascade. I used to do most of my own work, but engines are more sophisticated now and you need a garage that does good work, doesn't rip you off, and is personable.
