    Grandma Tteokbokki. Level 2 spicy.
    Toshi I.

My son and I wanted to try a few different dishes at the mall, so we chose the Grandma Tteokbukki Spicy Level 2 and boy, it was hot. This is coming from a Korean. So if your tolerance level is higher, maybe take it down a notch.

Halgatteok is a tteokkbokki shop located in Koreatown. They have limited indoor seating and a restroom available. There's a parking lot for the plaza but it's a bit difficult to find parking. It's pretty much self serve and you pay after you eat. Food I've gone a few times and have tried both the grandma tteokbokki and the rose tteokbokki. Each bowl goes for $13-$15. Adding toppings goes by weight and is usually around $7-$10 extra. We recommend level 2 spicy and adding cheese. Stick with the ssal tteok for chewiness and try the garae tteok at least once. Overall, the portion is great for sharing and the flavor is great. Overall | 4.5 The ambiance + service: 4.5/5 The food : 4.5/5 The price: $$

The food was good but the explanation for how it works wasn't very good; even though my friend spoke Korean with the shopkeeper she just seemed irritated to be asked so many questions. We ended up adding a bunch of rice cakes and fishcake in the buffet style selection phase not knowing the main dish already came with rice cakes and fish cake, so we ended up with too much in leftovers, and the price to value ratio wasn't great anymore. We did not try the chicken. We couldn't tell a huge difference between the wheat and rice cakes, and didn't prefer the texture of the large ones. There was ample parking but there was still a valet on a weeknight that charged. Nothing in particular stood out to us about the tteokbokki so we would be unlikely to return.

Such an incredible spot! The base tteokbokki ranges from $13-15 and comes with plenty of toppings already. The base portions are pretty big and filling but there is a topping bar for you to add more and really customize the bowl to your liking. * grandma tteokbokki & rose tteokbokki + ramen noodles + glass noodles + sausage + cheese with garae tteok - I've been wanting to come here to try the large rice cakes and they were the most perfect texture, so chewy! The largeness is more for the experience/pictures imo since we ended up cutting it into smaller pieces. It is thicker/wider than normal too so it'll be good if you like your rice cakes thicker. - We ordered level 1 spice which was not spicy at allll - The sauce was incredible! The flavor was so comforting, creamy, savory, rich, and not overly salty/sweet (perfect thickness and flavor!) - I love having noodles in my tteookbokki because I enjoy how the noodles absorb the sauce. We added ramen to one bowl and glass noodles to the other bowl which was such a yummy idea. They cooked the noodles just the right amount (qq, bouncy) * multteok fish cake soup - Yumm! This was so light and comforting, perfect to balance out the rich flavors of the tteokbokki - Lots of fish cake inside! price: 5/5 flavor: 5/5 service: 5/5 (they were so sweet) parking: 3/5 (valet parking on weekends/nights). sometimes it's hard to find parking in this plaza during the day will definitely return!

Came in here for a late night snack as I absolutely love Korean street foods! We got the grandma tteokbokki and got it with the lowest spice level and it still had a slight kick! We ordered the tteokbokki with garae tteok which is the thick rice cakes and it was my absolute favorite! It was so chewy and went well with the fish cakes and sauce! We also ordered the mayak kimbap which is yummy as well and comes with this mustard like sauce to dip it in! The kimbap is really good if you dip it in the tteokbokki sauce too! We also got the gimmari which was fried perfectly and didn't get soggy after a while! It was such a good add on to our tteokbokki and I highly recommend you order it with your tteokbokki! The staff was super sweet and noticed we were new and helped us through the process! You can order the baseline tteokbokki as is but there is also a bunch of things you can order ontop by grabbing it from the side - there were a variety of noodles and rice cakes as well! That part is done by weight so be mindful of that! This place was clean and simple and even at 9pm there were quite a few people coming in! Definitely a good spot for a late light snack!

New tteokbokki spot and it became one of our faves! We've been craving tteokbokki since having this... portions are big and affordable. Their specialty is gal tteok which i personally really like, but they have lots of options for everyone (rose, jjajjang flavor, etc) Parking was valet when we came (typical) but super good spot! Grandma Tteokbokki 할머니 떡볶이($12.99 + $3.49/.25 lb) - the base at $12.99 gets you a boiled egg, fish cake, and tteok, you can pay more per quarter pound to get add-ons (a lot of options!). We got mild and it's got a kick so be prepared, but the flavor is super good! This comfortably fed two of us!! Rice ball 주먹밥 ($6.00) - this was a perfect addition to our tteokbokki. You get a good amount and a great palette cooler when it was getting spicy. Also dipping it in the sauce was sooo delish. They have lots of sides so recommend getting any of them! it was SO good. they have so many options, and the portions were insane. I'm like 90% sure the lady running the place added extra food to my bowl LOL. definitely going back. This time I forgot to ask for a Togo box but NEXT TIME

Halgatteok specializes in soup tteokbokki which isn't what I grew up with so I prefer the thicker kind but I would have to say that this was the best soupy tteokboki that I've had. As you walk in, you can opt for a self-service topping bar to add on to your tteokbokki. They charge by the weight. We ordered the original and the rose and this is the first time i enjoyed the rose tteokbokki over an original.

I really want to love this place but the service is so bad and the food has gotten so much saltier than ever. After eating at this place my husband blood pressure went up so high so if you have high blood pressure skip this place go to yupkitokboki. This place is small and not super clean so would I go back and eat here after trying it out twice maybe not.

Grandma Tteokbokki $13 + $5 of toppings ( 4 chinese noodle strands, 1 scoop of jolmyeon, 2 square fishcakes, 2 wheat fishcakes)
    Hannah L.

On a Monday evening, around 7PM, it was empty and there was ample street parking (free after 7, I believe). Staff are generally friendly, and was very helpful about how to go about ordering. They were also very attentive when it came to asking how we were doing and water refills. Prices are decent at $13 per serving, though toppings might not be worth since the bowl that's weighed is pretty heavy in itself. Got like 4 strands of chinese noodles, 2 fish tofus, and a lil bit of Jjolmyeon and it came out to an extra $5-$6. But the convenience of picking how much of own toppings is unique and appreciated! - Grandma Tteok $13: at 2x spice with cylindrical tteok hit the SPOT. SO said he liked these longer ones better bc of the extra chewiness (thickness). I never thought I'd say this, but I wish it had cabbage to absorb the extra sauce. - Jjajang Tteok $13: at 3x spice with wheat tteok was not as spicy as expected; definitely tolerable (I think the black bean and spice balanced each other out). The flavor was a bit too overpowering to my taste tho. Wheat tteok taste like regular rice cake to me, while SO found it "blander." Took this home for next day, and tasted just as good after a 3-4 minute microwave. - Mayak gimbap (8 pcs, $9.50): paired with the horseradish vinaigrette (?) was BOMB. Pricey, but worth a try. All the goodies (fish cake, spinach, radish) without the rice. - Toppings: chinese noodles were a little too chewy; had to take a few bites to fully cut through. Otherwise yummy, as was the jjolymyeon. Fish tofu squares also paired nicely. I would say compared to yup dduk, this is good for parties of 1-2 or larger if you want more variety (while yup dduk's serving is shareable for 3-4). Next time, if I were to just get the Grandma Tteok at $13, my craving would be satisfied at half the cost of yup dduk!!

So I've been recommended this place by a few of my friends and I'm so glad I stopped by. It really tastes authentic and reminds me of Korea! Even the vibe of the place was like a typical restaurant in Korea What's cool is that they have a toppings bar you fill up. You take it to the cashier, weight out your toppings and order your ttokbokki and pay when you're finished eating. I got the grandma ttokbokki and toppings I got was just thick glass noodles. Omg it was so good! Perfect comfort food! Flavor was amazing and I couldn't stop eating the sauce when I ate all the rice cakes. Definitely coming back here for some more

I ordered Rosé rice cake with fried seaweed wrap (appetizer) and wow honestly the sauce was really good and the rice cake was very huge and chewy. I feel as though for my personal tasting, the sauce was on the oily side a bit, tasted like MSG. The price was pretty pricey for two items, they were around $26 after tax. The service was friendly for to-go order, and it took about 10 mins to ready, which I would say is amazing for a quick bite ambiance like this. It's a casual dining experience, good with friends. If you crave some juicy Korean rice cake, I do recommend trying here at least once!

We decided to try out this place because we were looking for a late night spot in Koreatown. So you choose what toppings you want in your Tteokbokki at this bar, which is extra. I got the grandma Tteokbokki with melted cheese (which is extra). I love how rich, creamy, and saucy it is. You choose the type of tteok you want. We got the Mayak Gimbap which was actually filling. The veggie and shrimp tempura was perfectly fried. These were pretty affordable. The staff brings out the food and drinks to your table. This is a great place for friend hangout.

There is sometimes street parking but the availability is rough, it's tough to park, and even one of the meters we ended up at just didn't work. They only charge a $5 cash service charge though, which isn't bad. We were lucky to be seated right away, even in a packed restaurant. The restaurant has a surprisingly modern design, and is comfortable for as small as it is. We were quickly served their signature kimchis and barley rice. The kimchi, particularly the yeolmu (young summer radish) kimchi, has a unique flavor profile well suited to their food. We ordered 2 bowls of their plain kalgooksu, 1 bibim milmyun, and 1 tteokbokki. The food came out fairly quickly. The kalgooksu was as expected the star of the show. The anchovy broth brings a savory complexity that seems impossible for a soup made from just dried fish and a few other ingredients. It even has a rich, almost thick, quality to it that is surprising for a fish broth. Their noodles, the titular kalgooksu, have the signature irregularity and chew of knife cut noodles. I appreciate the vegetables that always come in kalgooksu, like potato, pumpkin, and zucchini, which offer an earthy heartiness to the light soup. My only complaint is that the potato is in huge irregular chunks, and is barely cooked, though I feel like I have had this issue with many of the kalgooksu bowls I've had over the years. The bibim milmyun was solid. I think that I prefer the texture and flavor of naengmyeon buckwheat noodles, but the milmyun, which are made with mostly wheat flour, still provide a satisfying chew. The sauce tasted bright and fresh, especially with a splash of added vinegar. It also came with a small side portion of spicy pork and some rice paper to wrap. The tteokbokki was the one let down of the meal. To be fair, I wasn't expecting much out of tteokbokki at all restaurant like this whose specialty is essentially the opposite. I ordered the tteokbokki as a "safe pick" for a picky eater in the group. It turned out to be a bit mediocre in our opinion, and that friend ended up enjoying their kalgooksu anyways. If you're looking to try this dish, it's definitely one of if not the best I've had in Southern California, so I'd totally recommend it. I'll also warn to steer clear of the Garden Grove restaurant of the same name and specialty. I think it's a disappointing mimicry of this place.

I had placed a phone order, for pick up; upon arrival, I found the service was prompt. I saw my food ready to go, just past the main walk-in area. Almost immediately after that, I was taken care of by the host and on my way. I've been waiting to try this place for ages so on the drive back to work I was excited to steal a piece of meat from the bag. Initial bite flavor was good, meat was tender just a bit on the chewy side.. I wasn't bothered by it too much as I'd have to leave it in an oven warmer at work. Trying to keep food warm, in doing so, I knew there'd be only two possible outcomes, melting tender or either tough & dry. So, the dish of meat and rice sat in the warmer for almost an hour hour and a half. The downhill slope.... Set the "meat " on the veggies and began to eat. Meat after meat, I kept experiencing the same exact texture. It was the same exact rubbery chew, I initially tasted. Each and every piece was the same exact flavor. There was no peak, there was no pitfall. If you cook or grill, you know this is a red flag. Normally, consistency would be a good thing, a Master craftsman type experience, but this was NOT it. As go on, I get the sinking feeling, this can't be real meat. I lock in, the deeper I dig, each piece looks the same, broken apart the same, tastes the same, just various shapes. They can call me crazy for this one - I'll stand by it. Something is not right here. I'm not even going to throw it away. I'm going to study it for the next few days and post an updated review. The chips had no warmth to them and were slathered with decently flavorful honey butter that pooled to the bottom. 4.2/5 Mushroom bimibap - A very balanced dish with cohesive elements. Wish there were more mushrooms as they of course were the best part. Good hostess. The steak took longer than expected to come out? Perhaps the kitchen messed it up and had to start over. Either that or maybe the waiters were busy. Or maybe it just takes a while to make it. Not sure. The waitress did the job competently but nothing above that. Overall, definitely not Michelin level service. 4.4/5 Ambiance A little too loud and it affected the entire vibe because I had to raise my voice to speak with the waitress. It became easier to just use nods and thumbs up. Like Cobis, a very modern and upscale restaurant that is hampered by lighting that is too dark. Pictures turned out good because I used another phone's flash. Just a little more light would be so much of an improvement without losing the romantic intent. Bathroom was average. 4.5/5 Overall, I had a solid meal that left my mood elevated. The service or food weren't as good as Cobis, Barsha, Ammatoli, or even Sonoratown - all top LA restaurants, but still worthy of a experience and I may return. 4.5/5 I would highly recommend Chois in San Diego as an extremely similar modern Korean fusion restaurant that also had better food, service, and ambiance. That place was 5/5 in every way.

I wish Kobawoo were closer to where I live, or I would be here this weekend, but perhaps it's a good thing we're so far apart.

Very small kimchi maybe one or two bites. Three orders that I'm surprised that they give such a small amount of banchan. How can establishment justify this high priced meal for such small portions? God and I drove all the way from South Bay, stuck in traffic for almost 1 1/2 hrs of this. Maybe this is the type of place you should dine in only?? Do not ever do take out here! The food in general was just ok. Nothing special and Kimchi soup was very salty. Threw all 3. Wow, what a waste of money. Very disappointing... I guess I won't be coming here ever again.

We also got an additional order of LA kalbi for some protein. The meat quality was good but I felt like the meat was not marinated long enough and so the flavor was a little bit lacking. If only it just sat in the marinade for a couple more hours, I think this would have been perfect. The tofu soup was not my favorite, to be very honest. There was some flavor in there that made it smell like a stinky towel. Very different from other soondubu soup places and unfortunately not for me. Everything else we had was excellent and I would definitely come back again just for the barley rice and banchan. Service was quick and servers were nice. We also came at 3pm on Saturday so there was no wait. Recommended!

It's a lot of food for the price ($35 pp at this writing). While the minimum order is for 2 people, we've tried sharing the 2-people order among 3 and it worked for us, with addition of a couple of other items from the menu. The Korean BBQ beef is at par with most other nice restaurants in K town; their marinated crab was delicious! Service is okay - given how busy they are! Most servers are not very conversant in English so a little patience would help you get the right things you need. Nice and unique vibe with Korean handicraft items and art work on display (and for sale, I believe).

In fact, we regularly brought visitors here. They raved about how good the spare ribs were and even insisted that their last meal before LA should be at Ham Ji Park.  Here's my belated review of what I consider the best spare ribs in LA. From the moment the Korean-style spare ribs arrived at the table, it was clear this was a dish worth savoring. Each rib bore a beautifully charred exterior--deeply caramelized without a hint of bitterness--offering that irresistible smoky aroma the moment it was placed before us. The glaze was nothing short of spectacular. A perfect balance of sweet and spicy, it clung to the meat with a glossy sheen that promised flavor in every bite. There was just enough heat to make your taste buds sit up and pay attention, but it never overwhelmed the deeper, richer notes of the sweet components. But what truly set these ribs apart was the texture. Beneath the charred surface lay meat so tender it practically fell off the bone with the gentlest tug of a fork. Each bite was juicy and succulent, the result of careful cooking and a respect for quality ingredients. Ham Ji Park, you will be missed. Thank you for the memories. Thank you for the food.

If you're searching for some of the city's best pork, then those in the know will bring up Ham Ji Park. For 2 decades, generous platters of pork ribs and pork neck stew decked every table. Now, our Korean friends lament the loss of their favorite pork joint in the city. The Koreatown proper location is located in the Royal Plaza mini-mall, just a few blocks off bustling Wilshire. Discounted parking is available in a lot across the street from the Chevron gas station. From the street, the entrance is flanked by potted plants and an enclosed street-ery. Inside, stainless steel chairs are pressed up against wooden tables, each outfitted with a metal grill. Oppressive fluorescent lighting shines down on the stone grey walls, which are left undecorated apart from a few flatscreens. Multi-lingual chatter blends with the sizzle of platters. I visited with some friends for a weeknight dinner, and about half of the tables were occupied. We shared a spread of grilled platters and sizzling soups. The meal began with a carafe of barley tea and a mostly standard spread of banchan. Across our food, the best dish was the signature Charbroiled Pork Spare Rib. The ribs were flavorful without feeling gamey, and the meat was complemented by sweet caramelized onions. The pork ribs handily outdid the good-not-great Charbroiled Beef Short Rib. Lastly, the Milt and Cod Rose with Vegetables stew was fishy and briny, appropriately flavored for the Korean palate. The service was appropriately attentive, although I would've appreciated more intentional refills of our banchan ramikens. The rib plates cost upward of $35 each, while the soup was just under $30. The portions were hearty; a single entree platter could reasonably feed 2 moderately hungry bellies. It's a shame to hear that Ham Ji Park has closed; I'm kicking myself for not trying their pork neck stew earlier.
