OK place to browse through, but HPB selections seem to get sparser as years go on, and prices keep going up. Used to be able to find some out of print treasures, for reasonable prices, but they price them now at the upper range of the going market. Their business, and I understand it, but I know they buy used books pennies on the dollar. eBay and Amazon can compete on pricing, and it just didn't used to be that way. We went so my daughter could sell a whole bunch of books, and I went to go buy some. They have a great kids section. The books, though most are used, are in pretty good shape. We were very surprised. Keep in mind, if you have somebody handle your transaction for selling, they can't handle the transaction for you or anybody that you're with, if you're purchasing. Half-price books is on the larger independent booksellers showcasing a unique collection of new and used books, audio books. The wholesale division of Half Price Books is Texas Bookman, which is headquartered here in Texas; Dallas specifically. I've been to half-priced books several times with Thing One. Usually, we come here to sell books to the store and to buy a few. We have sold various books to this establishment to include chapter books, si-fi books, loose leaf textbooks, etc. This store will generally buy books depending on the condition and demand for the specific book. However, loose leaf textbooks are generally less desirable to buyers and may have a lower resale value compared to traditional bound textbooks. In general, the price received for the books sold here is less than a fraction of the price paid for brand new. For example, on the last visit, Thing One brought in 'Clock Work Orange" (only read once) in pristine condition, and four other books read once with a value of over $120.00, yet Thing One was offered $11.00 for these books. It is understandable that the store must turn a profit from the books they buy, but at the same time, prices should also be fair for the seller. It should also be noted that the selection of books here is not as expansive of larger book store that only sell new books. This store may be an decent alternative for someone who is looking for a place to buy other than Barnes & Nobles or another small local book store. read more

One thing that should be pointed out about this bookstore is the fact that it is surrounded by a plethora of retail outlets, and even a Cinemark theater just around the corner. As for me, I like to shop for used vinyl and this location features a small selection that is by in large over priced compared to actual record store prices. And if you decide to sell your vinyl here, they'll give you less than if you take it to an actual record store. Everything within these 4 walls is well merchandised and laid out and they carry puzzles, games, backpacks, and a small collection of very collectible items. You can also purchase DVDs, CDs, and even VHS tapes. They even have a clearance section in the back corner. It's a great place to stop in while visiting one of the many other surrounding retail stores. read more

Also enjoy bringing my 4 year old - she loves this bookstore and finds hidden gems in the kids section! Docking one star for their used book buy-back program. I've tried to sell used books to them and they offer ridiculously low prices, even for newer books! We're talking $1 to $3 offers for hardcover books purchased in the past year or two. Confession time: I'm a big used books fan, so therefore I'm a fan of Half Priced Books. This outlet is well run and well organized, there's just a couple extra things to keep in mind if you visit it. First off, the location of the store is less than a hundred yards from the local Cinemark theater and a whole bunch of restaurants. This means that traffic and parking close by will be challenging at peak hours. Second, this location is a bit smaller and thus has slightly less selection than the one down on Hwy 183 / Anderson Mill Road. Still, don't let either of these things deter you. This is a great spot to look for that one last book. The one you need for an extra day's worth of reading pleasure! read more

I mean how can you not like an inexpensive price on gently used books?? My children love to come here to explore and see what books are available to them. My son purchased many of the magic tree house books for his collection at a very fair price. I suggest you go through the book to make sure there are no markings or missed torn pages but most are in great condition! Does anyone else get the feels when you open the cover and see a written note from a parent or grandparent to their loved ones? I saw one here and I just couldn't bring myself to buy it even though my son needed for his collection. Too many feels! Five stars for such a friendly staff. read more

Typically, once I buy a book I keep it in my library...but last week I brought in two boxes of books that I've been lugging around for ages...and made a little money! I'm new to the area (and Texas) and learning my way around. Bookstores are my favorite place! I was excited when I found that there was a Half Price Books in my new town! Everyone I talked to at this location was so kind and helpful. I talk a lot and the three women I spoke to were nice enough to let me babble. One woman walked me to the section I was interested in and even said she could have books sent there from other locations if they didn't have a copy. So lovely! There was also a customer in the store in the section I was in that I had a great conversation with. I never got her name, but it was super nice just to talk to a like-minded reader! This location is fairly large and had a good selection. I also asked for assistance in finding a few things and the employees were very friendly and helpful. The parking lot here can get pretty busy, but I've never not been able to find a spot. read more

Stopped in to let my friend's kid pick out a book. Haven't been in a book store in forever but this place was abnormally packed. I wasn't necessarily looking for anything but browsed the CD section just to pass time. Haven't played a CD in who knows how long but thought the Dirty Dancing soundtrack and R Kelly 12 Play would be good to listen to on my drive back to Houston, and it was. Not sure what the going rate for CD's are but totally worth the random purchase. read more

This Half Price Books is in the 1890's mall. They are close to the movie theatre so good luck with parking. I tried them early in the morning before any movies were playing so I got a front door spot. The store is a decent size. I didn't wander around too long as I made a beeline for the cook books. The first section had the books sorted by author's name. Really, do most of you shop for cookbooks by author? I don't. Still searching for a Korean and Indian cookbook, I found the next section to be books on cocktails. Next up was Italian cookbooks, following by Mexican. Finally I located a section on Asian cookbooks, FYI they don't consider Korean cookbooks as Asian. Now mind you the cookbook section is not that large, so it was increasing frustrating not finding what I want. I was looking on every shelf to find any Korean book at this point. As I dropped to my knees, SURPRISE! Of course, it would be on the bottom shelf. I made my selection and headed to the cashier. Both books were never used, and the sell price was half of the suggested listed price. Good prices but slim selection. Next time I will go to a real book store. read more

You can order used books on their national website, and for a small fee, have them shipped to the store. If you support your local business, it's a nice way to help them stay afloat. Don't try to sell your books there, though. They will hardly ever buy them, and they do, they won't pay much at all. This is the place where you go to read and spend time - not necessarily to turn a profit. Donate your used books to your local library instead? This place also have hard to find vinyl records and unique gifts for the book lovers in your life. read more

I love this wonderland of the written word. This place puts me in my pleasure bubble. When I get near this place, I'm giddy. I'm giddy like a child on the last day of school who's just been let go for the summer. I can find all sorts of goodies in here....an assortment of cook books, history books, old novels, new novels, how-to books, how not-to books, map and travel books, books with pictures of the Beatles (love me do), all kinds of CDs and gratifying gifts. They have LPs and 45s if you still have your old turntable plugged in. They have blank books for journal writing, drawing, or whatever you want to do with them. This place offered me numerous stocking stuffers for friends and family over the winter holidays. Books on their clearance aisle are marked down considerably, sometime as low as $1 - $3, with some that are almost new. They have some clearance CDs for a dollar. And yes, it is possible to find books that are older but don't smell old - you know what I'm talking about, those musty old treasures that smell like they've been sitting in your great grandma's attic collecting dust since WWII. And many of the employees are book lovers who enjoy chatting about them. What's not to love?? (And this review goes for most of the HPB locations around town). read more

They have gone up on the prices regarding their used record selection. Better to use Ebay. Most of the time their prices are 45%+ higher. Also they need to remove their masks. Making their customers wear a mask is not right as the state is opened. Get back to normal and take off the masks. read more

I've never been a fan of going to a used bookstore because they tend to be jammed packed and smell of dust and mold. This location really surprised me. The store is large, bright, and well laid out. There is a great selection of books, especially children's books. I can't believe I have been paying full price for books, children's books that get damaged as soon as my kids touch them. If you are a teacher, you get discounts year-round and they hold teacher appreciation weeks throughout the year. read more

I could spend hours in here paging through various books and slowly walking isle to isle. I am SO glad they don' t have actual shopping carts or I would really find myself in trouble. Tried for a second time in a month to sell 2 books. Both times, second time 6/11, I was met at the door and told I needed an appointment. I asked how many people were in the store and she said 3. Three people in the store and they couldn't let me in to sell 2 books. Not good customer service when restaurants all around the store a open. read more

The place was organized and somewhat cleaned. I found a journal with plastic wrappedaround it and it had a bug in the inside. I brought it to the cashier asking if they had anymore he said no. I asked for a discount because of the bug, the employee said he couldn't because it was new, and then proceeded to poke a hole in it and scrape the bug out. I then asked to speak to the manager he called her she said to give it half off. I gave them the second star only because the manager marked it down instead of the employee who just said he couldn't so anything. read more

While it's not a tricked out bibliophiles temple like the location on Lamar, it is a great place for manga, comics, notebooks, and genre works. They've got a great collection for deco-book collectors too (you people that just buy hardcovers to put on your shelves, but don't really read anything...ever). Half Price can't be beat. Great selection at incredible prices. Do like me and visit the far corner of each store where the ultra-bargains are. My kids hate it when I go back there because I'll spend 30 minutes going through all of the choices only to head out with a 1 dollar book. But man do I get the deals! And they have great CD and DVD stock as well. We always find a good movie in the discounted movie section for 1 or 2 bucks. And the regularly priced movies are very reasonably priced and you can frequently find very new movies in there. The book selection is outstanding and their inventory system is very good. I shop used book stores to browse a variety of books, magazines and media. This store has a very limited selection, it may be because they have less traffic these days and fewer customers bringing in books to sell. The shelves are full, but full of old and out of date materials. Sad, used to be better. Browsing is no fun here. read more

While I am now a former employee of HalfPriceBooks, my experience with them predates my period of employment by a number of years I've had great experiences at all HPB locations, and the Cedar Park location is no exception. They have some of the best prices, even over Amazon and rarely more than Chegg. From textbooks to recreational reading, the staff are very patient and accommodating. If they ever don't have something on their shelves, they will check other area stores as well as the national chain to see if what I need can be ordered. HPB is by far my favorite chain of physical bookstores. read more

Half Price Books is always a bit of a craps shoot when it comes to whether or not you find what you want. Selection, they've got it. A lot of mainstream stuff, as well as a decent selection of more esoteric things in good supply here. I like the staff, never had an outright negative experience. However, it's not a full five stars because it seems that their staff, when you do have a question or need help, are nowhere but the register to be found. Or, much like the White Rabbit, they pop past you with single-minded determination to get back into the room marked "employees only". That being said, every clerk I have encountered, and managed to ask for help, has always been friendly. It's a well-kept store with a large selection. I love all of the Half Price Books stores! My son reads a lot, requiring frequent visits to find regular titles of interest and unknown treasures to be discovered. The staff is always eager to help you find what you are searching for, even some of the customers offer assistance as well. You can trade in books, games and movies (in good condition) so you can stretch your money a little bit further and feel good about giving others the opportunity to dive into a story you enjoyed. They also have a ton of interesting toys and novelty items making for a fun gift shop. Best of all, their prices are great!
