Aside from being $7.55 each for a TINY empanada, they're truly gross. You'll find better ones at 7/11. Underbaked, nasty taste in the fillings (don't get me started on the ham that look like it was pre-chewed). We had to throw half of them away because they were literally inedible. After my husband and I made our obligatory trip to Voodoo Doughnut at the DIA, I was itching to find something on the more savory side to balance all of the donuts we (more like me...) had just eaten. So I went off in search for something small and came across Half Moon Empanadas. Even at 6:00am in the morning, they were still relatively well stocked with empanada options, so I decided to get a Bacon, Egg, and Cheese empanada and a Creamed Spinach empanada. I decided against getting one of their empanada packs because of the cost (though at $6.50 an empanada, that definitely hurt too lol) and the uncertainty of how these empanadas would taste and truly I am glad that I did. While the empanadas themselves look great, though a little on the small side for the price point, both empanadas were extremely salty, and tasted as if somebody had knocked over an entire tub of salt in both the pastry batter and the filling. The pastry was also extremely dry, which could have been off-set by the filling had it not been too salty. With each bite my husband and I took, we just stared at each other as the chalkiness of the pastry filled our mouths mixed in with the creamy saltiness of the different fillings. By the end of eating both of our empanadas, we had shared three water bottles, and still felt as though we needed more water. Overall, while I wouldn't necessarily recommend Half Moon Empanadas because of my experience, I also wouldn't mind trying it again in the future because the empanadas do have potential. I am also not sure when they first opened as I recall the advertisements a year ago about how they were in the midst of opening up, so it is possible that they are still experiencing growing pains typical of a new business. read more

This is my first time making a yelp review but it had to be done. WORST empanada I've ever had in my life. Ordered it around lunchtime today and it was so dry, stale and flavorless. $7 for literally dry dough, the meat was semi warm and the cheese was hard. Save yourself the money and anger and go eat at chicfila or McDonald's right across the stand. NOT WORTH IT AT ALL. This is a very unassuming little stand and my expectations were not very high. What a delightful surprise! The server was sweet and attentive and even though it's 5 in the afternoon, the display case was full. I got two- the three cheese and spicy chicken. Both were tasty. The three cheese was very mild (think quesadilla in pastry) but the spicy chicken had a little kick! They also had hot sauce packets for some additional zing. They were served warm- soft but not greasy. Filled my belly for less than $15 (which is a tall order for airport food)! I give this place five stars because of context. Simply put, there is no other food vendor that ticks all of these boxes: Fast - it's a 2 minute transaction and I've never seen a line Fresh - the empanadas are warm and flakey, and there are more than half a dozen varieties Affordable - each empanada is under $7 Sure, there are other places to eat, but none check all three boxes. Yes, a premade sandwich is fast, but you'll pay $13. Starbucks or Chick-fil-A have a few savory items under $10, but check out those lines! Order a burger, pizza, tacos or another savory item and you're approaching $20. So far, the Cheesy Gaucho is the best option (but it's not at all spicy). I bought a "box" of four empanadas on my way to my flight. For almost $27 all included, this is on the expensive side. There was no box- it was a paper bag. By the time I sat down maybe 30 minutes later, chicken and beef had disintegrated and were all over the ham and cheese and the dulce de leche. They were messy to eat. Needless to say, this did not help the dessert empanada. Beef was a bit too condimented for my taste. I think that the problem would have been averted if each of the soupy empanadas were packaged separately. Also, they should stop calling four empanadas a "box". read more
