Boy, peoples love Half Fast - I find it just an OK sandwich shop, like sandwich shops any city over pop. 50,000 has many of... an OK bite if that's what you're in the mood for. I go maybe twice a year, mostly due to convenience; I don't go out of my way. I find the bread nothing special and the ingredients fresh but mediocre (chicken breast, bacon, cheese, toppings - lettuce, tomato, etc.). Often they've been pretty light on the main ingredient, like bacon or shrimp in a po' boy special, and pretty skimpy with the tomatoes, too. It's cheap eats. Inside has lots of seating and comfortable college-town casual, with many flat screens; outside is pleasant, at least until some of the bros near your table start smoking. read more

A Boulder institution, Half Fast is one of the best spots on the Hill. Whether it's for a quick bite between classes, dinner, pregaming or satiatiating some late night munchies, you can't go wrong. HUGE menu of subs, both hot and cold. Delicious. Plus many tasty vegetarian options. I saw one Yelper complain about the messiness factor...the subs are overflowing with tasty ingredients, of course it's bound to be a little messy. And they're SUBS. You eat with your hands. My favorite is the Thai Tempeh. Crunchy tempeh, spicy Thai sauce, sprouts, carrots...amazing. It's indescribable. I always default to this sub (or if I'm not up for the bread, I opt for the Thai tempeh salad), even after I broke my vegetarianism. And the pitchers! Strong islands...megaritas...slurricanes. Yes, you get an entire personal pitcher with a straw for around $8. Girls, careful--they're tasty enough to sip all night...having two of 'em will get you HAMMERED, if not black-out drunk. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything...I'm pretty sure there's a limit of 2 per person now... Live music some nights on the weekends, and an amazing patio to chill with your buds. Once being one of my favorite places while in college (shortly after I turned 21), Half Fast now makes me feel old. Not really in the looks sense, but certainly in the I-don't-really-feel-like-partying-that-hard sense. Could be the whole driving back to Denver thing. I still really dig it though. There's literally something for any type of mood I'm in and I'm used to only having a few veggie options. I'm also pretty sure their menu has expanded three-fold since I last visited and it was already pretty expansive. When the boyfriend and I stopped in here before the CU basketball game last weeked, I went for the barbecue tempeh, an old favorite. You can now ask them to add sriracha....SCORE. It was the perfect addition to add a little zing to the barbecue sauce. My only sandwich complaint would be their proportion of tempeh to veggies. They stick a ton of tempeh in it, enough that I picked some out (especially if it wasn't doused in sauce) and not a ton of veggies...but there are still lots of options if you want mostly veggies. Don't expect to get your food super-fast though. It's called "Half Fast" for a reason (and not because it's sounds like something different when the whole name is slurred together). Leaves ample time to begin sucking down a 32 oz margarita in a pitcher (and for $8, no less!) and get a good buzz before you fill up with bread and tempeh. I went for just a beer this time. Strong drinks and TONS of different sandwiches. Weather your here to get drunk or eat there's a lot of reasons this is one of the better stops on the hill. The sandwich selection is pretty intermediateing, all of the combos they've came up with sound pretty good and I've only had one that i didn't really like in the 5 or so years I've been stopping by here. My advice "Don't Eat The Crab! Yay-Yaayyyy!". There's one that i usually get when we get there catering at my work called Tijuana taxi and that one is pretty spicy but its super tasty, i love it. As for the drinks, the old claim here was the strongest drinks on the hill. Wile the fox may have them beat there still definitely a good bang for your buck, expecally if you get the pitcher of long island ice tea or a pitcher of the hurricane. This place is really great if you have friends that are under 21 or your friends are over 21 since you can all sit together. ' Half fast also has one of the cooler padios to hang out on in boulder. I guess this is one of the best sub places in the area? I think they're okay. I tried the ones w/ the stars which indicated that they were the popular subs ordered. My friends and I ordered the 14 inch subs with a jug of Margarita and hung out in the patio deck. What we ordered: 1) The Shiz - Chicken Tenders Roasted Red Peppers, Swiss, Bacon Basil Mayo ($10.49) - I don't think I'm a fan of chicken tenders on my sandwich. Unless it wasn't cooked the same as usual, having tenders on a sub didn't taste right. I would not get this one again. 2) Ba-Donk-A-Donk - Roast Beef, Cheddar, Bacon, Grilled Onions, Chicago Hot Peppers, Ranch Dressing, Lettuce, Tomato ($10.49) - This one tasted better than the Shiz, but it would've tasted much better if it had some sort of sauce on it. 3) Forgot what the last sandwich that I tried was called. All I know is that it had mushrooms and it tasted like a vegetarian lasagna. This was actually pretty good. Overall, the subs were alright. They just looked great because they were huge. By far the best sandwich shop in Boulder. In fact, one of the best restaurants in Boulder period. Its definitely a place I would take someone from out of town. The environment is as lively as the college itself. The menu boasts a giant list of sandwiches, all of which could be a signature sub at any other shop. I've never ordered something I didn't like. My favorites are The Shiz with chicken tenders, bacon and basil mayo, and the Ba-donk-a-donk with roast beef, bacon, hot peppers and more. They even have great vegetarian options (eggplant parm) too. I wasn't expecting this place to be on the edge of campus, so I was a little surprised it was packed with college kids eating and drinking (mostly drinking) on a Wednesday night. Half Fast is (obviously) known for their huge menu with a dizzying array of sandwiches and salads. They're all good! They have plenty of meat and meatless selections so there is most definitely something that will satisfy a craving. If you can't find something to eat here then just go away... I can honestly say I have never heard anyone complain about the quality or taste of their sandwich (although the wait can be kind of annoying). But seriously, why would you complain about waiting when you can sip (or chug) one of their famous Strong Islands? The sandwiches taste great and all but the drinks are really where it's at. I can say confidently that there is no better deal in town than those pitchers- just $7.50!! You would pay that much for a lot less alcohol anywhere on Pearl. Strong Islands are a perennial favorite, but the Megaritas and Hurricanes are also tasty (and potent). So gather up some friends, grab some pitchers while you wait for your sandwiches, and sit outside on the patio. That's what I call a perfect afternoon. read more

This place offers veggie heads protein choices-garden burger, hummus, tempeh, eggplant Parmesan etc. The subs are hot, toasty and add some yummy dipping sauces-a veggie head has everything here to be satisfied infinitely. Now you carnivores, don't go getting your panties in a bunch-I am just ignoring your whole extended list of subs available, because you can pretty much get whatever your heart desires....chicken parm, tuna salad, shrimp something or other and all the regulars as well. Turns out I waited eons for a sandwich that I could've slapped together at home with some Albertson's French bread and meat from their deli counter. Closer to 5 stars than 4 (for what it is). Definitely wouldn't rate this on the same scale as, say, a steakhouse, but this place kicks ass. Big, loaded delicious subs with literally (meaning literally, not figuratively) a hundred options. I love putting meat in my mouth (no homo), but my favorite sandwich here is the Caprese sub. Pesto, huge slices of pretty good quality fresh mozz, it's the dankness. Outrageously strong drinks - $8 for a pitcher that's got 2-3 STRONG drinks worth of booze in it. One of my favorites from school. EVERYTHING is awesome. The selection is beyond huge. They must have close to 100 choices on those boards. Very crowded, but worth the couple min wait. Ohhh College how I miss you. As a CU student I spent many a days on the patio of Half Fast. Small pitchers of margaritas served with an individual straw, awhile loathing the trials and tribulations of the challenge in picking a major, deciding where to go out on a Thursday night, and the unknown identity of the cute library streaker. Half Fast Subs is a true Boulder experience. Whether you're visiting or a local, this place seems to please all. The menu is truly a masterpiece. So delicious I don't even know where to begin. Who knew the Hill had such a gem? The sandwiches are awesome, and they have a wide selection to fit every palate or dietary preference. They have a really large Vegetarian section on the menu which is amazing. Their bread is vegan (but the gluten free bread has egg). They are really accommodating if you need to leave out cheese or alter something in the order. Now on to my favs... The Portobello Boomer is really tasty, great if you like balsamic vinegar like me, the sauce is the best part. I think the mushrooms could be sauteed longer, but if you like your mushrooms more raw then it's great. The Thai Tempeh is amazing and tastes as close as you can get to Thai food on a sub roll. And another great one I've tried is the Tempeh Parm, to me it tasted like a meatball sub back during my meat eating days. Next on my list to try is the Veg. Sloppy Joe. So many great sandwiches to try, so little time. Good thing the subs are well priced and servings are large. When I was there they also made special vegan nachos. The serving was huge and my boyfriend and I took down the whole thing. I hope this is something they regularly add to the menu. The margaritas are also great, strong but still maintains good flavor. The staff is also really nice and accommodating. The managers came out to make sure we were enjoying our order, and that's not usually what happens in a sub shop. I love this place. I'm definitely going for sandwiches in the future. And they deliver which is even better so I don't have to go to the Hill every time I want the Thai tempeh. read more

FIve stars all the way. The subs are cheap! I think an average is around 6 bucks, and they are huge! The bread was fresh, the meat in my gyro was yummy (even better than most greek places :) ). My boyfriend and I both agreed that the subs needed more salt. I guess thats their style of cooking. In any case, Americans over consume sodium! Went through Boulder and made an effort to stop at Half-Fast Subs. It was definitely worth it, the menu is gigantic and every sandwich is signature--uniquely named and crafted. My group all ordered different sandwiches and I got to try roughly 5. Go figure I liked everyone else's but my own. No one got to try mine because I scarfed it down. My recommendation: the shiz I don't recommend: BBQ philly ( too many other good options and it didn't "pop" like some of the other subs) The menu is somewhat overwhelming but broken down into sections like: Italian subs, chicken tender subs, philly style subs, even fish subs! There may be 50+ different signature subs. Basically, if you like options, or have a group of people with different tastes, go to Half Fast subs and you will not be disappointed. read more

Love this place! After walking around campus we made a pit stop here as it looked like a good college spot and the outdoor seating looked like the perfect place to relax before our flight back east. Even though we went during the summer there were still quite a few students which lends to a more fun and upbeat atmosphere. The subs are awesome! Some of the best that I've had in a long time. They're also extremely unique. Anything you're hungry for, you can get on a sub here. I had the new turkey and it was packed with flavor! I love anything with artichokes on it. I opted for the large size and ate the whole thing (I was really hungry) but, I think the average person could get by with the half and a bag of chips. The next time I'm in Boulder I'm definitely stopping here and I'll be trying one of those pitchers next time - they looked amazing! read more

This is my favorite sub place in the country. I love the pitchers of strong, cheap drinks. I love the HUGE sub variety (makes you wonder why you ever go to places like Subway or Jimmy John's).
